• Ubuntu 10.04 RGBA(Transparent theme) bug

  I tried to follow this tutorial frome ghacks.net. But I end up with a bug. Everytime I try to change the desktop background or the theme. It opens up lots of folders. And then close it back again. So I cannot do anything when I try to change the background or the theme to the default. Here is the tutorial And I can't even shutdown my machine now, please help. EDIT I tried executing these commands in the terminal sudo add-apt-repository ppa:erik-b-andersen/rgba-gtk sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install gnome-color-chooser gtk2-module-rgba sudo apt-get install murrine-themes And it installed gnome color changer. It works, and the windows became transparent, but I can't change to the default theme and I can't put a background Here's the screenshot, when I try to change something in the preferences: Its just okay if I can't change the theme, but it won't let me change the background either. Or maybe the background is changed but its transparent just like the other windows. You can see that in the taskbar(or whatever its called in Ubuntu). Its full. What can I do to atleast make the background visible.

  Here's what I've done so far: sudo apt-get install imagemagick libmagickcore-dev This did not throw any errors, so I think that ImageMagick is installed fine. • Ubuntu 10.04 bind9 local zone include files and apparmor

  Rather than putting all my zones in one named.conf.local file, I'd like to have them in groups that I can manage as separate files. So, I've tried putting the following into named.conf.local: include "/home/zones/group1.conf"; include "/home/zones/group2.conf"; include "/home/zones/group3.conf"; However, when I restart named, I see "permission denied" errors in the logs. Ubuntu uses apparmor for bind, so I also added the following in /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.named: /home/zones/group1.conf r, /home/zones/group1.conf r, /home/zones/group1.conf r, Now, when I re-start named, all appears to be well. Zones are loaded (I think). However, a day or two later, I see my secondary name server complaining that the primary is telling it that it's not authoritative for those domains. I then have to put all the domains back into the named.conf.local file again. How can I get bind9 to use include files in this way? I don't know much about apparmor, so that may or may not be the issue here, but I've used include files in this way on Debian OK.

• Which isn't working on linode servers (Ubuntu 10.04)?

  Currently trying to configure a linode server running on ubuntu 10.04. I utilized a stackscript (Default drupal profile) which seemed to run successfully. The log indicate so as well. Then ssh'd into the server (as root) to try to configure php. When i run a which php, which php5 they both return nothing. A which python returns something though. I know where the default path to php but i usually just like to use it as confirmation that php exists. Do i have to modify some configurations to enable which to work? Also tab completion doesn't seem to work for when i apt-get install? Update: Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've ran a couple commands and no luck either: [ root@ ~ ] $ dpkg -l |grep php [ root@ ~ ] $ apt-get install php5-cli Reading package lists... • Cut (smart edit) .mts (AVCHD Progressive) files un Ubuntu Lucid

  I have a bunch of .mts files containing AVCHD Progressive video recorded by a Panasonic camera, and I need software on Ubuntu Lucid with which I can remove the boring parts, and concatenate the interesting parts, all this without reencoding the video stream. It's OK for me to cut at keyframe boundary. If Avidemux was able to open the files, it would take about 60 hours of work for me to cut the files. (At least that was it last time I tried with similar videos, but of a file format supported by Avidemux.) So I need a fast, powerful and stable video editor, because I don't want that 60 hours of work go up to 240 or even 480 hours just because the tool is too slow or unstable or has a terrible UI. I've tried Avidemux 2.5.5 and 2.5.6, but they crash trying to open such a file, even if I convert the file to .avi first using mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy. mplayer can play the files. I've tried Avidemux 2.6.0, which can open the file, but it cannot jump to the previous or next keyframe etc. (if I make it jump to the next keyframe, and then to the previous keyframe, it doesn't end up at the original keyframe, sometimes displays an error etc.). Also I'm not sure if Avidemux 2.6.x would let me save the result without reencoding. I've tried Kdenlive 0.7.7.1, but playback is very choppy, and it cannot play audio at all (complaining that SDL cannot find the device; but many other programs on the system can play audio). It would be a pain to work with. I've tried converting the .mts file to .mkv using ffmpeg -i input.mts -vcodec copy -sameq -acodec copy -f matroska output.mkv, but that caused too much visible distortions in the video in both mplayer and Avidemux. I've tried converting the .mts file with TsRemux.exe, but Avidemux 2.5.x still can't open that file. Is there another program to cut and concatenate the files? Is there a preprocessor which would create a file (without reencoding the video) on which Avidemux wouldn't crash?

• Update in grub.cfg file for loading new kernel image in Ubuntu 11.04

  I am new to Linux. I am compiling Linux kernel (ver: 2.6.34.12) in gcc in traditional manner in VMware machine in Ubuntu (kernel version - 2.6.38-8-generic) 11.04 version. I am unable to find, where to update about newly compiled kernel in the grub.cfg file. I updated the newly created image version name in the existing image. Then VMware didn't able to load new kernel. I have searched in internet but I didn't find. So anyone can help me, to update in the grub.cfg and to successfully load new kernel. Few things about what I have done: Make bzImage to create image file. Make modules_install && make install to install modules and then sudo mkinitramfs -o initramfs.img-2.6.34 2.6.34. Then sudo gedit grub.cfg. In that at the mementry I updated the version of vmlinuz and initrd from 2.6.38-8 to 2.6.34.12. This is I have done.

• Ubuntu: Memory Leak

  I'm having trouble finding from where this memory leak is occurring. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on a Dell XPS M1530. I have 3GB of ram and I'm finding after about an hour or so of use top shows me 2GBs+ used. The strange thing is when I add up the memory percentages by PID either from top or ps aux I find that I should only be using about 20-25% of my available ram. What brought this to my attention was I've begun running vmware server again. Now, obviously the ram usage spikes when I load a virtual machine, but the memory VMware is using does not account for the memory usage I'm seeing via top or free. Stopping vmware server releases the memory which was allocated to it, but I'm still unable to find where this RAM is being used. After a complete reboot, of course, the memory is fine, but very quickly it climbs to 60-80% usage with the processes only appearing to account for a third of that. Any ideas where I should look for more information on what this could be?

  I have a sub-directory in my /var/www folder called prod, which is password protected. It was all working fine until I asked my server admin to help me set up allow all access to one particular file. Now the entire folder is just giving me a 403 error.   I am seeing the following "oddity" with IE7-10 on Win Vista-8: When declaring font-family: serif; I am seeing an old bitmapped serif font that I can't identify (see screenshot below) instead of the expected font Times New Roman. I know it's an old bitmapped font because it displays aliased, without any font smoothing, with IE7-10 on Win Vista-8 (just like Courier on every version of Win). Screenshot: I would like to know (1) can anyone else confirm my research and (2) BONUS: which font is IE displaying? Notes: IE6 and IE7 on Win XP displays Times New Roman, as they should. It doesn't matter if font-family: serif; is declared in an external stylesheet or inline on the element. Quoting the CSS attribute makes no difference. Adding "Unkown Font" to the stack also makes no difference. New Screenshot: The answer from Jukka below is correct. Here is a new screenshot with Batang (not BatangChe) to illustrate.   We previously explained why so many geeks hate Internet Explorer, and even though Internet Explorer 9 and 10 are greatly improved, and on par with the competition, we’re still going to explain how to uninstall it from Windows 8 if you should want to do so. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 10 Press the Win + R keyboard combination and type appwiz.cpl into the run box, then hit enter. When the Programs and Features window opens, you are going to want to click on the “Turn Windows features on or off” hyperlink on the left hand side. Next, find Internet Explore and uncheck it. You will then be given a warning, you can just click yes to continue. Now click on the OK button, and then reboot your machine. Once you machine has restarted, you will see that Internet Explorer is no longer in the taskbar You should also notice that the Metro version of Internet Explorer has also been removed. That’s all there is to it.   I was trying to install a program and it said that my dependencies were unmet, and that I should run, sudo apt-get -f install. I have moved everything I didn't need in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ into the trash. My source.list is all Natty while I am running Oneiric. So maybe I need a new source.list? • Confusion on networking service start/stop in Ubuntu

  I'm preparing to move and took down two of my servers, leaving only one with some essential services running. What I neglected to consider was that one was the DHCP server(which I realized when somebody contacted me saying they couldn't connect. Whups). So because I only have a few hosts on this small network, I opted to just statically configure them for now. One of these is a new Ubuntu 11.04 server, where I have very little experience. I edited /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/hosts to reflect my changes. I ran $sudo /etc/init.d/networking stop *deconfiguring network interfaces ... So yay. Then I try to start, it gives me the mumbo jumbo about using services (why didn't it do that for the stop?) So instead I run ... $sudo service networking start networking stop/waiting Now, to me that says the status of the service is stopped. But when I ping another computer, I get a successful reply. So is it not actually stopped? More importantly, am I doing something wrong? It can't be anything to do with the configuration files, since they've been restored.

  My problem started yesterday night when I tried to change the my.cnf config on my ubuntu 12.04 x64 System. I simply tried to changed the bind-address parameter from 127.0.0.1 to 0.0.0.0.
