• Changing timezone without changing time in Java

  Hi! I'm receiving a datetime from a SOAP webservice without timzone information. Hence, the Axis deserializer assumes UTC. However, the datetime really is in Sydney time. I've solved the problem by substracting the timezone offset: Calendar trade_date = trade.getTradeDateTime(); TimeZone est_tz = TimeZone.getTimeZone("Australia/Sydney"); long millis = trade_date.getTimeInMillis() - est_tz.getRawOffset(); trade_date.setTimeZone( est_tz ); trade_date.setTimeInMillis( millis ); However, I'm not sure if this solution also takes daylight saving into account. I think it should, because all operations are on UTC time. Any experiences with manipulating time in Java? Better ideas on how to solve this problem?

• Basic Profanity Filter in Objective C for iPhone

  How have you like minded individuals tackled the basic challenge of filtering profanity, obviously one can't possibly tackle every scenario but it would be nice to have one at the most basic level as a first line of defense. In Obj-c I've got NSString *tokens = [text componentsSeparatedByString:@" "]; And then I loop through each token to see if any of the keywords (I've got about 400 in a list) are found within each token. Realising False positives are also a problem, if the word is a perfect match, its flagged as profanity otherwise if more than 3 words with profanity are found without being perfect matches it is also flagged as profanity. Later on I will use a webservice that tackles the problem more precisely, but I really just need something basic. So if you wrote the word penis it would go yup naughty naughty, bad word written.

  I've added a proxy to a webservice to a VS2008/.NET 3.5 solution. When constructing the client .NET throws this error: Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'IMySOAPWebService' in the service model client configuaration section. This might be because no configuaration file was found for your application or because no end point element matching this contract could be found in the client element Searching for this error tells me to use the full namespace in the contract. Here's my app.config with full namespace: <client> <endpoint address="http://192.168.100.87:7001/soap/IMySOAPWebService" binding="basicHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="IMySOAPWebServicebinding" contract="Fusion.DataExchange.Workflows.IMySOAPWebService" name="IMySOAPWebServicePort" /> </client> I'm running XP local (I mention this because a number of Google hits mention win2k3) The app.config is copied to app.exe.config, so that is also not the problem. Getting 403 error. I'ts probably something related to webservice security (because of different subdomains) but I can't figure out what. How to make https://secure.site.com/service.asmx be accessible from https://www.site.com/consumer.html? • Push or Pull to Excel for reporting data

  I am unsure which is the best way to go here. I have a third party Excel 2003 spreadsheet that needs to be filled in on a monthly basis and emailed. Currently it is a manual process and I am in the process of automating the generation of the spreadsheet. I have been throwing around different ideas of how to get the data into the spreadsheet. I have thought of using SSRS to create a report that is in a similar format and get the user to cut and past. Alternatively writing a VBA addin that retrieves that data from a webservice and then adds the data to the spreadsheet. Or using the third party spreadsheet as a template and open it on the server via oledb and adding the data then serving it as a downloadable file. Which is better or are the better solutions out there?

I try to call wcf ajax. and I can receive return successfully. But 10 or more minute after. I cann't receive return, and the ajax call the error function. and the fiddler return nothing. if I rebuild the project without any source modifying, I can receive ajax return successfully. such a weird situation. is their anybody who experience this? and know why ? So I now need to access some information, I have created another .svc file called Project.svc and IProject.cs, this contains the same info as resource (apart from the type is Project) But this now means I have another webservice, surley this is not right!?

We are used to running under load balancers (Microsoft or other make). Often we need to communicate between the different load balanced servers. Currently we do this through the SQL Server database that is common for all nodes, however, this comes with a performance penalty as each message requires a transaction and continual polling from the other nodes. My call to sendReceive crashes with the following error: com.ctc.wstx.exc.WstxUnexpectedCharException: Unexpected character 'C' (code 67) in prolog; expected '<' The 'C' is the first character on the comment in the WSDL. Without that comment everything works fine, but as far as my knowledge of basic XML dictates that comment is correct. My question would be: Is this a bug in Axis2 or is the accessed WSDL malformed? Is there any way to prevent Axis2 from crashing under these circumstances?

• Best approach to show big amount of "grid" data

  Hello all. I am building an application for Android (1.5) that, after quering a webservice, shows to the user a big amount of data that should be displayed in a "grid" or "table" style. I must show a result of about 7 columns and 50 rows (for example a customer list with names, adresses, telephone number, sales amount last year and so). Obviously, the 7 columns will not fix in the screen and I would like the user would be able to scroll up/down and LEFT/RIGHT (important because of the number of columns) to explore the grid results. cell selection level is NOT necessary, as much I would need row selection level. What is the best approach to get this interface element? Listview / GridView / TableLayout? Thanks

  For my AutoCompleteTextView I need to fetch the data from a webservice. As it can take a little time I do not want UI thread to be not responsive, so I need somehow to fetch the data in a separate thread. For example, while fetching data from SQLite DB, it is very easy done with CursorAdapter method - runQueryOnBackgroundThread. I was looking around to other adapters like ArrayAdapter, BaseAdapter, but could not find anything similar... Is there an easy way how to achieve this? I cannot simply use ArrayAdapter directly, as the suggestions list is dynamic - I always fetch the suggestions list depending on user input, so it cannot be pre-fetched and cached for further use... If someone could give some tips or examples on this topic - would be great!

• Should I use custom exceptions to control the flow of application?

  Is it a good practise to use custom business exceptions (e.g. BusinessRuleViolationException) to control the flow of user-errors/user-incorrect-inputs??? The classic approach: I have a web service, where I have 2 methods, one is the 'checker' (UsernameAlreadyExists()) and the other one is 'creator' (CreateUsername())... So if I want to create a username, I have to do 2 roundtrips to webservice, 1.check, 2.if check is OK, create. What about using UsernameAlreadyExistsException? So I call only the 2. web service method (CrateUsername()), which contains the check and if not successfull, it throws the UsernameAlreadyExistsException. So the end goal is to have only one round trip to web service and the checking can be contained also in other web service methods (so I avoid calling the UsernameAlreadyExists() all the times..). Furthermore I can use this kind of business error handling with other web service calls completely avoiding the checking prior the call.

  Hope a few people in here are familiar with JCAPS. Coming from pure j2ee world, it is difficult to digest the deployment model that JCPAS offers. While creating deployment profile, we need to map the resources (such as jdbc, webservice connector) to external systems. External systems are predefined with the target server ip, port, db name, credentials etc(in case of jdbc). So the problem is an EAR built for test environment can not be deployed to production environment. In simpler applications we could store database/credentials etc on to property files and hence EAR built for UAT could be deployed to Production with out any change. Is there a similar strategy available for JCAPS by which EARs built against an environment can be promoted to another seamlessly?
