• Assign fixed IP address via DHCP by DNS lookup

  Preface I'm building a virtualization environment with Ubuntu 14.04 and LXC. I don't want to write my own template since the upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 has shown that backwards compatibility is not guaranteed. Therefore I'm deploying my virtual machines via lxc-create, using the default Ubuntu template. The DNS for the servers is provided by Amazon Route 53, so no local DNS server is needed. I also use Puppet to configure my servers, so I want to keep the manual effort on the deployment minimal. Now, the default Ubuntu template assigns IP addresses via DHCP. Therefore, I need a local DHCP server to assign IP addresses to the nodes, so I can SSH into them and get Puppet running. Since Puppet requires a proper DNS setup, assigning temporary IP addresses is not an option, the client needs to get the right hostname and IP address from the start. Question What DHCP server do I use and how do I get it to assign the IP address based only on the host-name DHCP option by performing a DNS lookup on that very host name? What I've tried I tried to make it work using the ISC DHCP server, however, the manual clearly states: Please be aware that only the dhcp-client-identifier option and the hardware address can be used to match a host declaration, or the host-identifier option parameter for DHCPv6 servers. For example, it is not possible to match a host declaration to a host-name option. This is because the host-name option cannot be guaranteed to be unique for any given client, whereas both the hardware address and dhcp-client-identifier option are at least theoretically guaranteed to be unique to a given client. I also tried to create a class that matches the hostname like this: class "my-client-name" { match if option host-name = "my-client-name"; fixed-address my-client-name.my-domain.com; } Unfortunately the fixed-address option is not allowed in class statements. I can replace it with a 1-size pool, which works as expected: subnet 10.103.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 { option routers 10.103.1.1; class "my-client-name" { match if option host-name = "my-client-name"; } pool { allow members of "my-client-name"; range 10.103.1.2 10.103.1.2; } } However, this would require me to administer the IP addresses in two places (Amazon Route53 and the DHCP server), which I would prefer not to do. About security Since this is only used in the bootstrapping phase on an internal network and is then replaced by a static network configuration by Puppet, this shouldn't be an issue from a security standpoint. I am, however, aware that the virtual machine bootstraps with "ubuntu:ubuntu" credentials, which I intend to fix once this is running.

• Is dual-booting an OS more or less secure than running a virtual machine?

  I run two operating systems on two separate disk partitions on the same physical machine (a modern MacBook Pro). In order to isolate them from each other, I've taken the following steps: Configured /etc/fstab with ro,noauto (read-only, no auto-mount) Fully encrypted each partition with a separate encryption key (committed to memory) Let's assume that a virus infects my first partition unbeknownst to me. I log out of the first partition (which encrypts the volume), and then turn off the machine to clear the RAM. I then un-encrypt and boot into the second partition. Can I be reasonably confident that the virus has not / cannot infect both partitions, or am I playing with fire here? I realize that MBPs don't ship with a TPM, so a boot-loader infection going unnoticed is still a theoretical possibility. However, this risk seems about equal to the risk of the VMWare/VirtualBox Hypervisor being exploited when running a guest OS, especially since the MBP line uses UEFI instead of BIOS. This leads to my question: is the dual-partitioning approach outlined above more or less secure than using a Virtual Machine for isolation of services? Would that change if my computer had a TPM installed? Background: Note that I am of course taking all the usual additional precautions, such as checking for OS software updates daily, not logging in as an Admin user unless absolutely necessary, running real-time antivirus programs on both partitions, running a host-based firewall, monitoring outgoing network connections, etc. My question is really a public check to see if I'm overlooking anything here and try to figure out if my dual-boot scheme actually is more secure than the Virtual Machine route. Most importantly, I'm just looking to learn more about security issues. EDIT #1: As pointed out in the comments, the scenario is a bit on the paranoid side for my particular use-case. But think about people who may be in corporate or government settings and are considering using a Virtual Machine to run services or applications that are considered "high risk". Are they better off using a VM or a dual-boot scenario as I outlined? An answer that effectively weighs any pros/cons to that trade-off is what I'm really looking for in an answer to this post. EDIT #2: This question was partially fueled by debate about whether a Virtual Machine actually protects a host OS at all. Personally, I think it does, but consider this quote from Theo de Raadt on the OpenBSD mailing list: x86 virtualization is about basically placing another nearly full kernel, full of new bugs, on top of a nasty x86 architecture which barely has correct page protection. Then running your operating system on the other side of this brand new pile of shit. • Cannot access a very specific site from my router

So I'm at a bit of a loss what to do here, as NO device (Computers, Laptops, Tablets, Phones, PS3/ 360, etc) can access my site or its features, so it's not just my computer either. But every other site is just fine. When I connect to my neighbors router, the site comes up just fine. And shes with SHAW as well. What should I do?!

• Installing ImageMagick on Mac OSX 10.6

  I just got a new Mac and am trying to setup a local Perl development environment. I'm using MAMP but also need the ImageMagick perl module installed in order to do some of the photo processing our scripts require. I tried installing ImageMagick manually but ran into some issues and after reading online a lot of people reported having issues going this route. The general consensus was to install it using MacPorts instead so I went ahead and installed MacPorts. Unfortunately, MacPorts can't seem to install it successfully either. • Layer 3 switch routing

  I need help moving over to using our layer 3 switch as the inter vlan routing device rather than our cisco router. I've mostly got it working but I've got stuck near the end and need some advice (I think I just need a bit of education on the subject really). Cur I have a Dell PowerConnect 7048 connecting to a Cisco 1841 router. I've got a few key excerpts from the configs to provide the key information. So what I'm doing is moving clients over so that their default gateway is a 172.31.x.254 address rather than a 172.31.x.1 address. This works great for inter-vlan routing, I have no issues with this. The switch can also access the router no worries, and users on the 172.31.14.0/24 network can access all interfaces and sub-interfaces on the router, including 172.31.14.1. They can also access all of the interfaces that the router connects off to, no worries there. The problem I have is that users on the 172.31.16.0/24 and 172.31.19.0/24 subnets cannot access either 172.31.14.1 or any of the subnets the router connects to. They can, however, connect to BOTH of the sub interfaces on the router from either subnet. What am I missing here? Why can't the vlans connect to the non-sub interface on the router? Are tagged packets being sent to this interface?

  I am building a PHP registration form which takes the following fields for up to 20 athletes: First Name Middle Initial Last Name Federation Number Address City State Zip DOB SSN Phone Email I am only through 7 of the fields for each fighter and my php file is very large (over 40kb). Is there ANY way to consolidate this code at all? I am also having to validate the information on each field (as I said - 20 athletes x 12 fields = 240 validations on a single page). • Using OpenVPN, yet netflix.com blocks access

  I have set up an OpenVPN server on a VPS in the USA and configured it to route all clients traffic through it. Everything seems to work fine regarding the VPN connection in gerneral. All ip lookup sites show me the us server's ip address and even hulu.com works(it won't work if you are not in the usa). But for some reason netflix.com says "Sorry, Netflix is not available in your country yet.". So I thought that netflix probably uses some more sophisticated ways to determine your location beyond just your ip address. But I could not find a way to get it to work until I dropped the idea of using a VPN and instead connected to the server via a simple socks tunnel with ssh by running: ssh -D 9999 user@serverip All I had to do was changing the key network.proxy.socks_remote_dns in Firefox from false to true to prevent DNS leaks and setting up the socks proxy. Then I could finally watch netflix.com. As a result I concluded that there is nothing in the browser(or something like system timezone) that tells netflix the location, so it has to have something to do with the OpenVPN config. After that I used tcpdump to log all the traffic on the server's network interface venet0 (OpenVZ VPS), visited netflix.com on the client while first connected to the VPN and then connected via socks tunnel and afterwards compared both outputs. The only thing that caught my eye was that while using the socks tunnel the server mainly used ipv6 to connect to netflix whereas it only used ipv4 when the client was connected to the OpenVPN server. But I don't get how that could make such a difference. So what am I missing? Is there a way to configure OpenVPN to also use ipv6 to connect to a website although there is only an ipv4 connection between the VPS and the client? • Troubleshooting an unstable internet connection

  My MacBook Pro running OS X (10.9, but I had the same problem before) is connected to a Belkin router via WiFi and, using Virgin Media as the ISP, to the internet. The connection is extremely unstable – on some days, I get a ping timeout every few seconds. In addition, some domains seem to suffer general connectivity issues. For instance, I often find that while the youtube.com website loads, none of the videos (which are hosted on a separate domain) do. At other times, videos load but always fail to buffer, even though the actual connection speed is ok, even though I’ve disabled dash playback. Since I’m living in a rented room and the ISP contract isn’t actually mine I’ve got only limited possibilities of addressing the problem. In particular, I have no access to the router configuration and my non tech savvy landlady, while sympathetic, is not in a great hurry to hand the problem over to the ISP’s customer support. What’s more, I seem to be the only person in the house experiencing these problems – but I can imagine that this is simply because I’m the only one who’s using the internet continuously. I’m searching for specific tests that might be able to pinpoint – and ideally solve – the problem. So far all I’ve managed to do is establish that Virgin is routing my traffic in mysterious ways. A friend living in the same town who is also with Virgin Media has a more conventional traceroute output: 7 hops to google.co.uk, all of which send the ICMP TIME_EXCEEDED response. The obvious fix – rebooting the router – doesn’t seem to help. As far as I can tell, the WiFi connection is stable (I can always ping the router) so the problem is further downstream. I’ve tried using an alternative DNS before (OpenDNS) but if anything, this made things worse. In fact, it made all Google services nigh unreachable.

• VMWare ESXi virtual machine can contact the gateway but not the DNS server

  I am having a bit of a strange issue. I have a VMWare ESXi server with two virtual machines running on it. They are running just fine and can communicate on the network without a problem. I am now trying to add a third. I am installing Ubuntu 8.04 Server. I assign it a static IP address and it's a fresh installation. Once installed I can ping the gateway but I cannot ping the DNS server. It's on the same network with the other two VMs which are communicating just fine. I have tried to reinstall the operating system but it still fails to connect. One interesting thing I notice is the arp reply's MAC doesn't look right. I have cleared the FortiGate's ARP cache though and checked the entry and it seems correct. The MAC it lists is the one for the router. • how to notify a program of another program? dll? directory? path?

  I am trying to experiment with GNUS email in Emacs, in Windows (EDIT: x64 bit). I've got it to work in Ubuntu, but struggling with it in Windows. From http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_mono/emacs-gnutls.html#Help-For-Users I read in second paragraph: This is a little bit trickier on the W32 (Windows) platform, but if you have the GnuTLS DLLs (available from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ezwinports/files/ thanks to Eli Zaretskii) in the same directory as Emacs, you should be OK. I have downloaded and unzipped the gnutls-3.0.9-w32-bin package, but am not sure what to do with it. I have tried putting it in Program Files (x86), which is "the same directory as Emacs". I have tried putting it in the emacs-24.3 folder. I consider merging all the folders in between the two, but am hesitant as that seems a difficult troubleshoot attempt compared to my knowledge on these matters. I think Emacs needs to somehow see the gnutls binaries and/or dlls. My knowledge is limited on this. I've also struggled to understand PATHs for sometime now, and am not sure if that approach is relevant here. FYI, the emacs directory contains folders labeled bin, etc, info, leim, lisp and site-lisp. The gnutls directory contains folder labeled bin, include, lib and share. Hmm, now I'm finding lots of links on adding paths. Still, I'm skeptical that I would only add gnutls.exe path, as it seems the dlls are needed. Some additional data for Ramhound's first comment I have been attempting the (require 'gnutls) route. This seems to be the most relevant parts in the log: Opening connection to imap.gmail.com via tls... gnutls.c: [1] (Emacs) GnuTLS library not found Opening TLS connection to `imap.gmail.com'... Emacs seems to have installed itself in program files (x86), so I assume it is 32 bit.   I'm setting up an autoinst.xml file for auto-installing SLES 11. I get prompted for the various interface settings per below, but they don't seem to stick once the server reboots. I don't think I have the xml defined correctly.   I have created a JTable which is populated by various arraylists which get their data from a text list using a "~" to split. The issue I am having is that the table is displaying all data from the list on a single row. From previous advice, I think the issue may be looping, but I am not sure. Any advice would be great. • Puppet - Possible to use software design patterns in modules?

  As I work with puppet, I find myself wanting to automate more complex setups, for example vhosts for X number of websites. As my puppet manifests get more complex I find it difficult to apply the DRY (don't repeat yourself) principle. Below is a simplified snippet of what I am after, but doesn't work because puppet throws various errors depending up whether I use classes or defines. Any suggestions how I can implement the DRY principle and still get puppet to work? -- UPDATE -- I'm still having a problem trying to ensure that some of my vhosts, which may share a parent directory, are setup correctly. The error I am getting is: Duplicate declaration: File[/tmp/var/log/httpd/dev/foo]. I looked into using exec, but not sure this is the correct route, surely others have had to deal with this before and any insight is appreciated as I have been grappling with this for a few weeks. • OpenVPN not sending traffic to internet?

  I've set up openvpn on my pi and am running into a small issue. I can connect to the VPN server and ping it just fine, and I can also connect to other machines on my local network. I don't think it's my client because both my laptop and my phone (which has an openvpn client) exhibit the same behavior. I had OpenVPN installed on this pi before using debian and it worked, so I don't think it's my router but of course anything is possible.

• ubuntu eth0 not reconnecting after cable unplugged

  I'm running kubuntu 9.10 w/ gnome, I have a static IP defined in /etc/network/interfaces When I unplugged my network cable and rebooted, then reconnected the network cable I was not able to connect. I tried using sudo ifup eth0, and then ifconfig and it seemed as though the IP address had been assigned and I was connected, but I wasn't. I then did ifdown eth0, and again ifup eth0. For some reason I'm not able to access the network. Furthermore, I also attempted to connect via wlan, and was able to connect to the wireless network, but cannot "see" the network. I can't transfer data or access the internet or anything on the network including the router.   Hello, First of all I must say that I'm ver inexperienced server and network user. But I rented a unmanaged dedicated server. Well I didn't know what unmanaged really means, then I learned it when I needed support. Well I must do everything by myself. I have a problem. I had already 4 IPs on my server when I rented it. But then I needed more Ips and my server assigned me 32 Ips in which I can only use 27 of them. 85.25.230.0 - 85.25.230.31 this is my Ip range and they say the following Ips must not be configured on the server: 85.25.230.0 - network address 85.25.230.1 - gateway address 85.25.230.2 - router redundancy 85.25.230.3 - router redundancy 85.25.230.31 - broadcast address But the problem is ok Ips are assigned to me but they are not setup on my server. How will I setup Ips to work on my server? I did this after my reseach on google: I used this command on command prompt: route add 85.25.230.0 mask 255.255.255.224 85.25.230.1 metric 1 if then it said OK!. and I thought they should be working. (btw, mask is given to me by my ISP and I don't know metric 1 and if means I just saw it on the net and write it here) I setup my domains via using Plesk Kontrol Panel. So i added one domain and setup one of my new Ips 85.25.230.5 to it. But no it is not working. When I visit the domain via browser, there is a Plesk page comes and says this domain is not configured on the server. Then I changed the domains Ip to one of my old Ips which are given to me with the server and which I have been using for my other domains for a long time. Ok in a second, domain started working. I set it back to my new Ip and domain did not work. As I said, I'm not an expert and do not now the logic. But I'm eager to learn. Can you tell me what might couse the problem and did I do wrong while setting up IP RANGE to my server, if so how can I set them up? Thank you, Efe

• nginx, php-cgi and "No input file specified."

  I'm trying to get nginx to play nice with php-cgi, but it's not quite working how I'd like. I'm using some set variables to allow for dynamic host names--basically anything.local. I know that stuff is working because I can access static files properly, however php files don't work. I get the standard "No input file specified." error which normally occurs when the file doesn't exist, but it definitely does exist and the path is correct because I can access the static files in the same path. It could possibly be a permissions thing, but I'm not sure how that could be an issue. I'm running this on Windows under my own user account, so I think it should have permission unless php-cgi is running under a different user without me telling it to. .   I'm trying to get a full grasp of firewall filters and how to apply them on a Juniper EX4200 switch - to be able to block ports, police traffic and shape traffic. The network architecture is as follows internet >-< vlan4000 >-< vlan43 vlan4000 is a public "routed" block (where all the IPs are routed to and the internet gw is) vlan43 is a vlan with public IPs with devices (servers) attached There are static routes and RVI's on the EX4200 to send all traffic via vlan4000's gateway to reach the internet. I've set up filters on both input and output of the respective RVI's and VLAN's - with simple counters, to measure traffic flow from a server inside of vlan43 and a server on the internet. Then globally limit/police all outbound traffic to the internet Block inbound ports to vlan43 (eg. 22) Limit outbound traffic from vlan43 (to the internet) Limit outbound traffic from vlan43 (to other vlans) Limit outbound traffic from vlan4000 (to the internet from all vlans) Route traffic from vlans via specific routing instances (FBF) The question What I want to understand is why there isn't ever any activity on unit4000 or vlan4000 inbound or outbound counter - is this because there isn't a device on this VLAN - and that the traffic is only traversing it? And with regards to the TCP test - why is there twice as many packets on unit43-counter-in, vlan4000-counter-out and vlan43-counter-in - is this counting both the inbound and outbound traffic?

• TCP/IP & throughput between FreeNAS (BSD) server & other LAN machines

  I have got a question for someone that knows BSD a bit better than me that are in regards to my LAN setup at home/work here outside Chicago. I can't seem to fully optimize my network's (LAN) thoughput via my FreeNAS (BSD based) file server. It runs with the latest FreeBSD release which is modified to support several protocols for file transfers and more. Every machine that is behind my Smoothwall (Linux based) router is on the usual 192.168.0.x subnet and for most part works just fine. Behind the Smoothwall box, all machines are connected to a GB HP unmanaged switch. I host a large WISP here and have an OC-3 connection here at home/work and have no issues with downloading/uploading from/to the 'net'. My problem is with throughput. When I try and transfer large files...really any for that matter..between any of the machines to/and from the FreeNAS server via FTP, the max throughput I can achieve say between a Win 7 or a Linux box is ~65Mbit/sec. All machines are running Intel Pro 1000 GB NIC's and all cable is CAT6. Each is set to 'auto negotiation' and each shows 1500 MTU Full Duplex @1GB so I know the hardware is okay. I have not adjusted the MTU on any machine as I understand it to be pointless unless certain configurations are used (I assume I am not one of those). I might be wrong and just wanted to find out from someone that knows BSD better than I do if indeed that is ok or if something is out of tune or what. Are there other ways I would find better for P2P file transfers? I honestly do not know what I SHOULD be looking for with respect to throughput between the NAS box and another client when xferring files via FTP, but I am told that what I get on average (40-70MB/sec) is too low for what it could be. I have thought about adding another NIC in the FreeNAS box as well as the Win7 machine and use a X-over cable via a static route, but wanted to check with someone first to see if that might be worth it or not. I don't know if doing that would bypass the HP GB switch and allow for a machine to machine xfer anyways. The FTP client I use is: Filezilla and have tried both active and passive modes with no real gain over each other. The NAS box runs ProFTPD.

I am writing a PC side server for my andriod device, this is for exchanging some information and general debugging. Eventually I will be connecting to a SPP device to control a microcontroller. I have managed, using the following (Android to pc) to connect to rfcomm channel 11 and exchange data between my android device and my pc. Let me reiterate, I can get it to work, but not using service discovery protocol. I've tried a several different UUIDs and on two different computers, although I only have my HTC Incredible to test with. I've also heard some rumors that the BT stack wasn't working on the HTC Droid, but that isn't the case, at least, for PC interaction.

• Latency issues over internet

  I have a Media Temple server running http://www.popsapp.com which I am having latency issues with.
