• iPhone first responders

  I am confused about the iPhone responder chain. Specifically, in the iPhone event handling guide http://developer.apple.com/iPhone/library/documentation/iPhone/Conceptual/iPhoneOSProgrammingGuide/EventHandling/EventHandling.html, we have the following: The first responder is the responder object in an application (usually a UIView object) that is designated to be the first recipient of events other than touch events. But UIView is a subclass of UIResponder. And the UIResponder class reference says this: - (BOOL)canBecomeFirstResponder Return Value YES if the receiver can become the first responder, NO otherwise. Discussion Returns NO by default. If a responder object returns YES from this method, it becomes the first responder and can receive touch events and action messages. Subclasses must override this method to be able to become first responder. I am confused by the apparent contradiction. Can anyone clear it up for me? For what it's worth, I did set up a simple view-based application, and call canBecomeFirstResponder and isFirstResponder on its view. Both returned NO.

• Creating ViewResults outside of Controllers in ASP.NET MVC

  Several of my controller actions have a standard set of failure-handling behavior. In general, I want to: Load an object based on the Route Data (IDs and the like) If the Route Data does not point to a valid object (ex: through URL hacking) then inform the user of the problem and return an HTTP 404 Not Found Validate that the current user has the proper permissions on the object If the user doesn't have permission, inform the user of the problem and return an HTTP 403 Forbidden If the above is successful, then do something with that object that's action-specific (ie: render it in a view). These steps are so standardized that I want to have reusable code to implement the behavior. My current plan of attack was to have a helper method to do something like this: public static ActionResult HandleMyObject(this Controller controller, Func<MyObject,ActionResult> onSuccess) { var myObject = MyObject.LoadFrom(controller.RouteData). if ( myObject == null ) return NotFound(controller); if ( myObject.IsNotAllowed(controller.User)) return NotAllowed(controller); return onSuccess(myObject); } # NotAllowed() is pretty much the same as this public static NotFound(Controller controller){ controller.HttpContext.Response.StatusCode = 404 # NotFound.aspx is a shared view. ViewResult result = controller.View("NotFound"); return result; } The problem here is that Controller.View() is a protected method and so is not accessible from a helper. I've looked at creating a new ViewResult instance explicitly, but there's enough properties to set that I'm wary about doing so without knowing the pitfalls first. What's the best way to create a ViewResult from outside a particular Controller?

• Django doesn't refresh my request object when reloading the current page.

  I have a Django web site which I want ot be viewable in different languages. Until this morning everything was working fine. Here is the deal. I go to my say About Us page and it is in English. Below it there is the change language button and when I press it everything "magically" translates to Bulgarian just the way I want it. On the other hand I have a JS menu from which the user is able to browse through the products. I click on 'T-Shirt' then a sub-menu opens bellow the previously pressed containing different categories - Men, Women, Children. The link guides me to a page where the exact clothes I have requested are listed. BUT... When I try to change the language THEN, nothing happens. I go to the Abouts Page, change the language from there, return to the clothes catalog and the language is changed... I will no paste some code. You don't have to understand it or even look at all of it. I've published it just in case because I really can't understand the origins of the bug. Now this is how I have narrowed the problem. I am debuging with "raise Exception(request)" every time I want to know what's inside my request object. When I place this in my aboutUs method, the language cookie value changes every time I press the language button. But NOT when I am in the displayClothes method. There the language stays the same. Also I tried putting the exception line in the beginning of the @base method. It turns out the situation there is exactly the same. When I am in my About Us page and click on the button, the language in my request object changes, but when I press the button while in the catalog page it remains unchanged. That is all I could find, and I have no idea as to how Django distinguishes my pages and in what way. P.S. The JavaScript I think works perfectly, I have tested it in multiple ways. • WebKit "Refused to set unsafe header "content-length"

  I am trying to implement simple xhr abstraction, and am getting this warning when trying to set the headers for a POST. I think it might have something to do with setting the headers in a separate js file, because when i set them in the <script> tag in the .html file, it worked fine. The POST request is working fine, but I get this warning, and am curious why. I get this warning for both content-length and connection headers, but only in WebKit browsers (Chrome 5 beta and Safari 4). In Firefox, I don't get any warnings, the Content-Length header is set to the correct value, but the Connection is set to keep-alive instead of close, which makes me think that it is also ignoring my setRequestHeader calls and generating it's own. I have not tried this code in IE. The only examples I found of odata and WebGet only have an example method which doesn't have any parameters.

  Hi, I'm trying to convert this c code(http://nashruddin.com/OpenCV_Eye_Detection) to the python code, but in c style, he used cvROI thing, since ROI functions are not supported by python-opencv, I tried cvGetSubRect so Here is the eye detection part of the code : eye_region = cvGetSubRect(image,cvRect(face.x,int(face.y + (face.height/4)),face.width,int(face.height/2))) eyes = cvHaarDetectObjects(eye_region,eyeCascade,memo,1.15,3,0,cvSize(25,15)) for e in eyes: cvRectangle(image, cvPoint( int(e.x), int(e.y)), cvPoint(int(e.x + e.width), int(e.y + e.height)), CV_RGB(0, 255, 0), 1, 8, 0) return image; When I run this code, It draws rectangles irrelevant places. I thought, eye_region coordinates are wrong, and tried some coordinates, but it didn't work. Any idea ? Note :Face detection method works very well, and it's code is same with the eye detection method.

The problem is when a external method tries to set cbxJobPosition. cbxJobPosition is databinded with a list of objects of type JobPosition: JobPositionID: 1, JobPositionName: Manager JobPositionID: 2, JobPositionName: Employee JobPositionID: 3, JobPositionName: Third party Here's the XAML: <ComboBox Cursor="Hand" DataContext="{Binding}" ItemsSource="{Binding}" FontSize="13" Name="cbxJobPosition" SelectedValuePath="JobPositionID" DisplayMemberPath="JobPositionName" SelectedIndex="0" Width="233" Height="23" SelectionChanged="cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged" /> On UserControl_Loaded method, it reads from database the list of jobs and try to set the specific job position "Third party": //calls cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged and passes the correct SelectedValue within cbxJobPosition.SelectedIndex = 3; //calls cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged and but won't pass the correct SelectedValue within cbxJobPosition.SelectedValue = "3"; As you can notice, when the processing is automatically redirected to cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged, the SelectedValue attribute will have different values for each statement above when you're debugging within cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged event. Does anyone know if this difference is expected, am I missing something or it could be a bug?

• Android CheckBox -- Restoring State After Screen Rotation

  I have come across some very unexpected (and incredibly frustrating) functionality while trying to restore the state of a list of CheckBoxes after a screen rotation. I figured I first would try to give a textual explanation without the code, in case someone is able to determine a solution without all the gory details. If anyone needs more details I can post the code. I have a scrolling list of complex Views that contain CheckBoxes. I have been unsuccessful in restoring the state of these check boxes after a screen rotation. I have implemented onSaveInstanceState and have successfully transfered the list of selected check boxes to the onCreate method. This is handled by passing a long[] of database ids to the Bundle. In onCreate() I check the Bundle for the array of ids. If the array is there I use it to determine which check boxes to check when the list is being built. I have created a number of test methods and have confirmed that the check boxes are being set correctly, based on the id array. As a last check I am checking the states of all check boxes at the very end of onCreate(). Everything looks good... unless I rotate the screen. When I rotate the screen, one of two things happens: 1) If any number of the check boxes are selected, except for the last one, all check boxes are off after a rotation. 2) If the last check box is checked before rotation, then all check boxes are checked after rotation. Like I said, I check the state of the boxes at the very end of my onCreate(). The thing is, the state of the boxes at the end of onCreate is correct based on what I selected before the rotation. However, the state of the boxes on the screen does not reflect this. In addition, I have implemented each check box's setOnCheckChangedListener() and I have confirmed that my check boxes' state's are being altered after my onCreate method returns. Anyone have an idea of what is going on? Why would the state of my check boxes change after my onCreate method returns? Thanks in advance for your help. I have been trying to degub this for a couple days now. After I found that my check boxes were apparently changing somewhere outside my own code I figured it was time to ask around.

• Preloading multiple comboboxes/listbox itemssource with enumerated values using WCF RIA Services

  I would like to be able to load several RIA entitysets in a single call without chaining/nesting several small LoadOperations together so that they load sequentially. I have several pages that have a number of comboboxes on them. These comboboxes are populated with static values from a database (for example status values). Right now I preload these values in my VM by one method that strings together a series of LoadOperations for each type that I want to load. For example: public void LoadEnums() { context.Load(context.GetMyStatusValues1Query()).Completed += (s, e) => { this.StatusValues1 = context.StatusValues1; context.Load(context.GetMyStatusValues2()).Completed += (s1, e1) => { this.StatusValues2 = context.StatusValues2; context.Load(context.GetMyStatusValues3Query()).Completed += (s2, e2) => { this.StatusValues3 = context.StatusValues3; (....and so on) }; }; }; }; While this works fine, it seems a bit nasty. Also, I would like to know when the last loadoperation completes so that I can load whatever entity I want to work on after this, so that these enumerated values resolve properly in form elements like comboboxes and listboxes. (I think) I can't do this easily above without creating a delegate and calling that on the completion of the last loadoperation. So my question is: does anyone out there know a better pattern to use, ideally where I can load all my static entitysets in a single LoadOperation?

• Ruby - Feedzirra and updates

  Hi, trying to get my head around Feedzirra here. I have it all setup and everything, and can even get results and updates, but something odd is going on. I came up with the following code: def initialize(feed_url) @feed_url = feed_url @rssObject = Feedzirra::Feed.fetch_and_parse(@feed_url) end def update_from_feed_continuously() @rssObject = Feedzirra::Feed.update(@rssObject) if @rssObject.updated? puts @rssObject.new_entries.count else puts "nil" end end Right, what I'm doing above, is starting with the big feed, and then only getting updates. I'm sure I must be doing something stupid, as even though I'm able to get the updates, and store them on the same instance variable, after the first time, I'm never able to get those again. Obviously this happens because I'm overwriting my instance variable with only updates, and lose the full feed object. I then thought about changing my code to this: def update_from_feed_continuously() feed = Feedzirra::Feed.update(@rssObject) if feed.updated? puts feed.new_entries.count else puts "nil" end end Well, I'm not overwriting anything and that should be the way to go right? WRONG, this means I'm doomed to always try to get updates to the same static feed object, as although I get the updates on a variable, I'm never actually updating my "static feed object", and newly added items will be appended to my "feed.new_entries" as they in theory are new. I'm sure I;m missing a step here, but I'd really appreciate if someone could shed me a light on it. I've been going through this code for hours, and can't get to grips with it. Obviously it should work fine, if I did something like: if feed.updated? puts feed.new_entries.count @rssObject = initialize(@feed_url) else Because that would reinitialize my instance variable with a brand new feed object, and the updates would come again. But that also means that any new update added on that exact moment would be lost, as well as massive overkill, as I'd have to load the thing again. Thanks in advance!

• UIView removeFromSuperView animation delay

  I have a method which animates one of the subviews of UIWindow and then removes it from UIWindow using removeFromSuperview. But when I put removeFromSuperview after animation block, the animation never shows, because removeFromSuperview removes the UIView from UIWindow before the animation plays :-( How can I delay removeFromSuperview so the animation plays first, and then subview is removed? I tried [NSThread sleepForTimeInterval:1]; after animation block but that didn't have desired effect, because animation sleeps too for some reason. • How can I use external expressions in Linq with EF4 (and LINQKit)?

  I want to separate out often used expressions in linq queries. I'm using Entity Framework 4 and also LINQKit but I still don't know how I should do it the right way. Let me give you an example: Article article = dataContainer.Articles.FirstOrDefault(a => a.Id == id); IEnumerable<Comment> comments = (from c in container.Comments where CommentExpressions.IsApproved.Invoke(c) select c); public static class CommentExpressions { public static Expression<Func<Module, bool>> IsApproved { get { return m => m.IsApproved; } } } Of course the IsApproved expression would be something much more complicated. The problem is that the Invoke() won't work because I didn't call .asExpandable() from LINQKit on container.Comments but I can't call it because it's just an ICollection instead of an ObjectSet. So my question is: Do I always have to go through the data context when I want to include external expressions or can I somehow use it on the object I fetched (Article)? Any ideas or best practices? • NetBeans behaves differently if project is run via "Run Project" or build.xml>run

  I slightly modified the build-impl.xml file of my NetBeans project. (Specifically, I made it to insert build time into program code). If I run project via build.xml "run" target, I get behavior I expect - the program displays build time and date. But if I run project using standard (and most obvious, used it always) button "Run Main Project", I get totally another result (no build date). Moreover, if I insert any code into build.xml, I still get result if I run the target explicitly and no result if it is run simply by NetBeans. And this leads me to conclusion, that this button uses another method to run my application. My question is: what does that button do? What method does it call? And can it be configured to run the needed target of make file?

  Hi, I used the setContentOffset method to scroll to a particular point automatically without user interaction. [menuScrollView setContentOffset:CGPointMake(600.0,0) animated:YES] but when i try to call the same method in a looping fashion inorder to slow down the speed of scrolling the scrolling never happens for (int i = 1; i<=30; i++) { [menuScrollView setContentOffset:CGPointMake(600.0-i*10,0.0) animated:YES]; NSLog(@"%f",600.0-i*10); } During the above piece of code the scrolling of UIScrollview happens only once (1st iteration( and it does not scroll for remaining 29 interations. What is the problem here ?

  Hi, Can I rerender a jsf ui component when a valuechangelistener method is run? The reason i'm asking is that my valuechangelistener method changes the values of the input boxes but when I run it, they don't seem to be rerender. The following doesn't work: <h:inputText id="inputbox_id"/> <h:selectOneMenu valueChangeListener="#{myBean.changeCountryMenu}"> <a4j:support event="onchange" rerender="inputbox_id" action="#{bean.test}> </h:selectOneMenu> Notice that bean.test() is never run. So the solution I thought of is to rerender the inputbox from the valueChangeListener. If there is some other better solution i'd be glad to hear... Thank you! Ben.
