  • VIM zsh, bash and colors in command line on Ubuntu

    I have problem with VIM command line when calling system commands. e.g. !ls, all command output colors aren't parsed by VIM. My system is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with VIM 7.3.429 from Ubuntu repositories. Is there any workaround for this problem?   • Run script when shutting down ubuntu before the logged in user is logged out

    I'm writing a script to backup some local directories on a unix machine (Ubuntu) to a samba drive. The script works fine and I've got it running at shutdown and restart using the method described at http://en.kioskea.net/faq/3348-ubuntu-executing-a-script-at-startup-and-shutdown It works by placing the backup script into the /etc/rc6.d and /etc/rc0.d directories. However there is a problem. After looking at the scripts logfile it seems to be run after the user is logged out. We are using LDAP authentication and when the user logs out, the system cannot backup to their samba share. Does anyone know of anyway to run the script before the user is logged out?

  • Write to windows share mounted in Ubuntu

    I used to mount a windows share in Ubuntu server, with an entry in fstab: //data/SharedFolder /media/SharedFolder/ smbfs user,defaults,credentials=/root/.creds,uid=root,gid=root 0 0 /root/.creds is a text file with three lines, my username, password and domain. Users on the ubuntu server could write to this mount, but then I upgraded to 10.04 and now only root can write. Regular users can still read though. mount currently tells me: //data/SharedFolder on /media/SharedFolder type cifs (rw,mand,noexec,nosuid,nodev) How do I make it world writeable again? Thanks

  • OpenVPN (HideMyAss) client on Ubuntu: Route only HTTP traffic

    I want to use HideMyAss VPN (hidemyass.com) on Ubuntu Linux to route only HTTP (ports 80 & 443) traffic to the HideMyAss VPN server, and leave all the other traffic (MySQL, SSH, etc.) alone. I'm running Ubuntu on AWS EC2 instances. The problem is that when I try and run the default HMA script, I suddenly can't SSH into the Ubuntu instance anymore and have to reboot it from the AWS console. I suspect the Ubuntu instance will also have trouble connecting to the RDS MySQL database, but haven't confirmed it.   • Install XP over Ubuntu. (Flash Drive)

    My girlfriend needs to install Windows XP over Ubuntu on her PC, because she need to run some software that Wine and a visual machine can't handle as well as the 'real' thing. Problem is, it seems very difficult to make a bootable flash drive with the files from a XP .iso from Ubuntu. All the guides I could find was about Windows 7, formatting the USB as NTFS, then use UNetbootin to extract the files to the USB. Problem is, that only works with 7, not XP. Does anyone know how I can make a bootable XP flash drive? Thanks! It's really important.

I have the following folder structure `-- data |-- a |-- a.txt |-- b |-- b.txt |-- c |-- c.txt |-- d |-- d.txt |-- e |-- e.txt |-- org-1 | |-- a.org | |-- b.org | |-- org.txt | |-- user-0 | | |-- a.txt | | |-- b.txt I am trying to list the files only inside the data directory. I am able to get the correct result using the following command in RHEL find ./testdir/ -iwholename "*/data/[!/].txt" a.txt b.txt c.txt d.txt e.txt If I run the same command in Ubuntu it is not working. Can anyone please tell me why it is not working in Ubuntu ?

  • Can't add Fedora 14 to grub.

    Today I installed Fedora 14 in a different partition in the same hard drive as Ubuntu. At the Fedora 14 installation, I chose not to install Boot-loader in the MBR, and instead chose to install it in the Fedora partition itself, which is according to my HD layout /sda3. After the Fedora 14 installation I booted in to Ubuntu and ran sudo update-grub but 'grub.cfg' fails to add Fedora 14 in to the OS list. Here is the output of boot-info script.     I have question about strange behavior of my openVPN configuration on Debian lenny. I have 2 server configs (one proto tcp-server based and one proto udp based). ISP bandwidth is 7Mbit/7Mbit. When I uses proto tcp-server my download server rate is fine around 6,4 Mbit/s, but upload rate is about 3Mbit/s. When I uses proto udp, my download server rate is around 3Mbit/s and upload rate around 6,4Mbit/s. I tried to handle the MTU, MSSFIX and cipher on/off on server and client configs to synchronize rates, but without solution.     of course), I have a number of DNS servers, all running bind9 (9.5.1, to be specific) under fedora. 4 of them are slaves, fed by a common master for our public DNS. These are all located on the public gateways of our various offices. One of them has tons of messages in its log files similar to these: Jul 21 17:26:18 gateway named[3487]: client 10.171.3.8#52500: view internal: error sending response: host unreachable I wonder where that comes from. The firewall is open on port 53 between the two machines (10.171.3.8 is an internal DNS server located on a Windows Domain Controller). The internal domains do NOT list the gateway as a name server (so there should not be any attempts of replicating the domains), and the gateway does not handle any internal DNS. The clients in these messages vary between the two domain controllers on the internal network and a third internal name server (running bind9 on debian in a different segment of the network). Any pointers are highly welcome. In response to the first reply: The issue with this really is that tcpdump doesn't show any problems. Here is an extract from "tcpdump -i any port 53" 09:13:38.283308 IP valine.aminocom.com.61815 ns-pri.ripe.net.domain: 14075 PTR? 166.225.58.95.in-addr.arpa. (44) 09:13:42.007410 IP gateway-eng.aminocom.com.37047 alanine.aminocom.com.domain: 35410+ PTR? 12.3.172.10.in-addr.arpa. (42) At the same time, the DNS log shows: Jul 22 09:13:38 gateway named[3487]: client 10.171.3.6#61300: view internal: error sending response: host unreachable Jul 22 09:13:40 gateway named[3487]: client 10.172.3.12#56230: view internal: error sending response: host unreachable Jul 22 09:13:40 gateway named[3487]: client 10.171.3.8#55221: view internal: error sending response: host unreachable Jul 22 09:13:49 gateway named[3487]: client 10.171.3.8#51342: view internal: error sending response: host unreachable So clearly at 09:13:40 there were two unsuccessful attempts to connect to internal machines (10.172.3.12 and 10.171.3.8, both are DNS servers), but nothing in the tcpdump output.

I am not able to get the display right, from the beginning. During boot laptop screen is all green, and images / videos are not getting displayed properly when logged in. Actual problem started last week, when this laptop was with Windows Vista (preloaded), and I tried to update Nvidia graphics drivers. something went wrong and I couldn't find a way to fix, so decided to install Ubuntu. Over last week, installed / re-installed Ubuntu many times with various drivers with no success. Laptop : Dell Inspiron 1420 Installed OS : ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Current, Ubuntu 12.10) Nvidia driver : GeForce 8400M GS (tried in previous installations; not installed now) Print-screen was not able to catch this issue as mentioned in the comment, so I am posting screen photos.

It seems that Ubuntu must conntect to a real monitor before I can change my resolution in my VNC viewer. Can anyone help? They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. When I change my /etc/network/interfaces to: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp Everything works fine. Looking into /etc/resolv.conf provides some more hints...In cases where I was getting the resolving issue, resolve.conf was empty. No nameservers were specified. When I changed to dhcp from static and restarted networking. /etc/resolv.conf gets written to: 'nameserver 192.168.1.1'. Switching back from dhcp to static and restarting doesn't remove the nameserve entry. When I restart the system with static set, resolv.conf is empty. When I restart the system with dhcp set, resolv.conf has nameserver 192.168.1.1. So it appears that the issue is that resolve.conf is not getting written to correctly? Which package/code is responsible for writing to resolv.conf? Is there a particular package that I can take a look at open issues?     I use Wubi to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Windows 7 system. My PC is Acer Aspire S5-391 with a 64-bit operating system. After I finish installing Wubi on Windows I reboot my PC as told by the instruction. Then I got a black screen with the following words shown: [[BGave up waiting for root device. Common Problems: -Boot args (cat/proc/cmdline) -Check rootdelay=(did the system wait long enough?) -check root=(did the system wait for the right device?) -Missing modules(cat/proc/modules; ls/dev) ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/928E20128E1FEE0B does not exist. Dropping to a shell! BusyBox v1.18.5(ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4)built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (intramfs) _ I don't know how to deal with this but force my PC to shut down. I can still successfully enter Windows. But everytime I try to enter unbuntu, it shows the above words.......

  • How do I make dnsmasq serve IP addresses via IPoIB?

    I have a cluster farm that I'm setting up. The nodes (computers in the farm) are connected via ethernet & IP over Infiniband. I'm needing to netboot the nodes and thought dnsmasq would fit well as it provides all the features including support for DHCP over IB and it works great for our ethernet setup. However, I can't seem to get it to provide IP addresses to the infiniband adaptors on the nodes. Each node is running an Ubuntu desktop 12.04 LTS. The dnsmasq server is running on ubuntu server 12.04LTS and has the following test config: dhcp-authoritative domain-needed bogus-priv expand-hosts no-hosts domain=local dhcp-range=eth0,10.0.0.10,10.0.0.255,12h dhcp-option=eth0,3,10.0.0.1 dhcp-range=ib0,10.1.1.10,10.1.1.255,12h dhcp-option=ib0,3,10.1.1.1 log-queries log-dhcp IPoIB works between nodes when configured statically but not with dhcp. On the nodes the file /etc/network/interfaces contains auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto ib0 iface ib0 inet dhcp #iface ib0 inet static #address 10.1.1.5 #netmask 255.0.0.0 up echo connected >`find /sys -name mode | grep ib0` Is there something I need to do on the client or server end to make this work?

  • Mirror using apt-mirror and exclud certain sections/categories

    I'm currently using apt-mirror to create a local mirror of the debian repositories. As the mirrored repositories will be used only by machines destined to be headless servers and as an effort to reduce the current mirroring size (around 75GB), categories like games and possibly others will never be needed. How can I go about specifying (on the mirror.list perhaps?) what sections/categories I want to be excluded from the mirroring? Maybe a bit subjective, but apart from games what other sections/categories could be "safely" ignored from the mirroring for my environment purposes?
