• What are the best linux permissions to use for my website?

  This is a Canonical Question about File Permissions on a Linux web server. I have a Linux web server running Apache2 that hosts several websites. Each website has its own folder in /var/www/. /var/www/contoso.com/ /var/www/contoso.net/ /var/www/fabrikam.com/ The base directory /var/www/ is owned by root:root. Apache is running as www-data:www-data. The Fabrikam website is maintained by two developers, Alice and Bob. Both Contoso websites are maintained by one developer, Eve. All websites allow users to upload images. If a website is compromised, the impact should be as limited as possible. I want to know the best way to set up permissions so that Apache can serve the content, the website is secure from attacks, and the developers can still make changes. One of the websites is structured like this: /var/www/fabrikam.com /cache /modules /styles /uploads /index.php How should the permissions be set on these directories and files? I read somewhere that you should never use 777 permissions on a website, but I don't understand what problems that could cause. During busy periods, the website automatically caches some pages and stores the results in the cache folder. All of the content submitted by website visitors is saved to the uploads folder.

  For my small company, I'm using Tomahawk Backup as the enterprise offshore solution, as it covers files, databases and Exchange (brick level). The problem is the price... it costs more than 10x the price of Dropbox (and others) for the same space (120GB), and doesn't have de-duplication. So I'm wondering: assuming there is no problem with backing up files only (ie copying the exchange store file and the db files to the Dropbox folder), would Dropbox be suitable as the offsite backup solution? • Database server size

  I received a recommendation from my hosting provider noting that a general rule in production server management is to ensure that the memory on your database server is larger than the size of your total database. Our database is 1800mb (and growing) and we're being told to purchase a 2GB server. This didn't sit right with me, but I'm not an expert in production server management. We're running a MySQL db with mostly InnoDB tables and some MyISAMs. Thanks!

• Notepad++ incorrect syntax highlithing?

  So I want to build a XHTML 1.0 Strict based website. Using Notepad++ for syntax highlighting came as an idea to me. But when I tried to put the XML declaration (as stated in the spec, proper XHTML pages should use a XML declaration and be served as application/xhtml+xml) I can't get the entire document highlighted propperly.   Details I recently upgraded to Windows 8 Enterprise trial. After installing, I downloaded the Nvidia Windows 8 x64 install package, and it installed fine. After rebooting I got a message stating that SLI was disabled. And in the configuration menu the option to enable SLI is grayed out. I have confirmed the SLI is connected properly. Any thoughts? • Why does loading a html page opens automaically the printer dialog?

  I have the problem that loading a certain webpage in firefox automatically opens the printer dialog. How is that? Additional information: This only happens on firefox 24.0 on Windows 7. It neither happens on Windows Explorer in Windows 7 nor on Firefox 24 on a Linux system. This also happens when using the firefox safemode, with all add-ons disabled. I cannot post the webpage, since it is not public and restricted. Multiple javascript files are used, but none contains the expression print(). The page content does not contain the phrase 'printer'. It has nothing to do with printing something. This happens sometimes, but not always. I cannot say for sure the URL and/or the content is always identical. I can answer any other questions, like 'Does the page contain this and that...', 'does the URL contain this and that...' Basic question: What could be the reason for the annoying printer pop up?

  I run a script tailing a log in a remote server, like so: ssh userx@someip tail -f /data/current.log|python2.7 monitorlog.py There are dependencies and service requirements that disallows me to run the script off the remote server. (DB, ACLs, and path to another service is uses) Is there a way I can tail and monitor a log without using the ssh userx@someip? I thought about generating RSA keys but I think you still need a user to ssh.

I have a database backup script creating regular backups and I want to automatically remove those more than N days old.   Hi, In large server environments, how do you handle the issue of backing up SQL Server dbs which may not be in sync with other dbs they rely on? So if I back up DB1 from a server, and it uses another db which is not backed up, doing a restore when the dbs are in differing state could cause problems? It seems like all dependent DBs should be backed up, regardless of size etc, but in my current job (where we're a datacentre company and I'm a .NET Developer), I only backup some of several dependent DBs on a SQL Server instance.   Hello, I downloaded all jar files for Spring Security 3.0 and added them to my lib folder in Netbeans 6.8. • Fitting an Image to Screen on Rotation iPhone / iPad ?

  I have been playing around with one of the iPhone examples from Apple' web site (ScrollViewSuite) . I am trying to tweak it a bit so that when I rotate the the iPad the image will fit into the screen in landscape mode vertical. I have been successful in getting the image to rotate, but the image is larger than the height of the landscape screen, so the bottom is below the screen. I would like to image to scale to the height of the landscape screen. I have been playing around with various autoSizingMask attributes without success. The imageView is called "zoomView" this is the actual image which loads into a scrollView called imageScrollView.   Hey! So I'm trying to code something on wordpress for the first time but the validator doesn't seem to like me.
