• SQL Server. Stored procedure to get the biweekly periods

  I'm currently trying to write a stored procedure that can compute the biweekly periods when a date is passed in as a parameter. The business logic: the first Monday of the year is first day of the biweekly period. For example in 2010: period period_start period_end 1 2010-01-04 2010-01-17 2 2010-01-18 2010-01-31 3 2010-02-01 2010-02-14 .... 26 2010-12-20 2011-01-02 Passing today's date of 2010-12-31 will return 26, 2010-12-20 and 2011-01-02. I'm not too strong in T-SQL. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

• Unique number identifier generation

  I have to create logic for generation unique number identifier for records in database. id, generated in database is a separate column. At this moment, when user calls "create record" action, I save new record, get its database id, generate record number using this id, then put it to the edit form. Using this way means that all entity fields should be nullable to save record to database. I don't like this way. I know that should be better way. Is there a better practice to generate unique number identifier? What is possibility of generating non-unique random numbers? Thank you

  I've written code to smooth an image using a 3x3 averaging filter, however the output is strange, it is almost all black.   Please help me understand: print gettype(new CustomerObject()) prints: "object" (so it is an object) BUT print gettype((new CustomerObject())->get_customer()); prints: unexpected T_OBJECT_OPERATOR If I do it over two lines it works fine $object = new Customer($order->customer_id); print gettype($object); prints: object $customer = $object->get_customer(); print gettype($customer); prints: array It appears that the lines cannot be joined into a single call. Is this correct? and what is the logic behind that?

For example, I have two DIVs that are to be displayed on a page: <div id="appleSection"> <!-- Apple DIVs, content, form elements, etc --> </div> <div id="orangeSection"> <!-- Orange DIVs, content, form elements, etc --> </div> Depending on user selection (perhaps by country or something), the order which the DIVs are presented to the user can differ. If the core logic of the page is the same regardless, is it a best practice to determine order on the server-side (perhaps via two pages that differ in the order of the DIVs), or is it more appropriate to have just a single page and use CSS to control whether appleSection is above orangeSection or vice versa?

• Should Perl's opendir always return . and .. first?

  opendir MYDIR, "$dir"; my @FILES = readdir MYDIR; closedir MYDIR; It appears that 99.9 % of the time the first two entries in the array are always “.” and “..”. Later logic in the script has issues if it is not true. I ran into a case where the directory entries appeared later. Is this indicative of the file system being corrupt or something else? Is there a known order to what opendir returns?

  I have a query that is looking at a 'page_views' table. And I so far have the ability to get the total views by day. However, I am having an issue with getting unique views by day. The column I am testing against is user_id... Here's the query I have for total views. SELECT site_id, CONCAT(month(created_at) , '-', day(created_at), '-' , year(created_at)) as created_at_date, COUNT(*) as total_results FROM page_views GROUP BY day(created_at) I can't figure out the logic to just get the unique views, by day based on the user_id column though.

• Creating WebService test harness

  Hello, I am trying to create a test harness for our QA staff to test our internal web services. I would like to create a web app that will allow them to enter a uri then submit. The web app will then interrogate the uri to get the appropriate parameters expected and returns with a generated input form. I know, this would be similar to SOAPUI and others. However, I feel it would be earier for them to be able to just use a form with entry fields and click a button to invoke the service and get the results back for display in the web app. In addition, I could create some custom logic that allows them to generate specific behavior they need. Has anybody done anything like this? I have searched and have found similar functionality but nothing close enough to help me. If you need more details please let me know.   I have a trigger function that I only want to fire on certain instances of INSERTS, in this case, if do_backup = true. If it fires in all instances, I get an infinite loop. The logic seems pretty simple to me, and the rest of the function works. But the trigger function does not seem to register my conditional and always runs, even when backup = true.   I have a function which checks the passed value and returns false or true, if false I want it to add something to an array. The code I've written is below. if(!check_input($_POST['username'])){ $errors[] = "Username"; } Right now it adds to my array anyway, regardless of what is entered in the form. Is the way I've written that the correct way to check if the return from check_input() is false? I've checked the function's logic by altering the returns to echoes and it's returning the correct value, I'm just not sure if I'm checking it wrong. I'd previously attempted to write it as $X=check_input etc, and then if(check_value == false) but that doesn't seem to give me the desired result either. Hmmm a quick pointer please!

  Hi, Could some one possibly clarify this for me. In the MVC paradigm, the idea is to keep the controller as thin as possible, it is also true that the model is the bit that communicates with data sources such as the database, XML-RPC etc and this is where the business logic should go. Is the POST and GET data a 'data source' and should that kind of data be handled by the model or should it be by the controller. I would normally call a method in the model and pass it the post data, the data would be quality checked by the controller and the model method would simply do the insertion or whatever. Should it be though that controller just calls the model method if a post has occured and it is responsible for sanity check, data checks etc.

  I do not really know how to explain this in a clear manner. Please see attached image I have a table with 4 different columns, 2 are identical to each other (NAME and QTY). The goal is to compare the differences between the QTY, however, in order to do it. I must: 1. sort the data 2. match the data item by item This is not a big deal with small table but with 10 thousand rows, it takes me a few days to do it. Pleas help me, I appreciate. My logic is: 1. Sorted the first two columns (NAME and QTY) 2. For each value of second two columns (NAME and QTY), check if it match with first two column. If true, the insert the value. 3. For values are not matched, insert to new rows with offset from the rows that are in first two columns but not in second two columns

• Best place/area to store file for Trail period

  I need to have a trial period (7 days) in my application. From this I came to know that you can do that by keeping permanent file, database or shared preference. Where do I keep that file so that the user isn't able to see/delete it. If I put that logic in Sharedpreference or a file with a path "data/data/packagename", when the application is uninstalled then all history will be lost. Any other workaround/ideas? Note: there is no server, application works locally with no Internet.

  Our team has recently been working on a logic and data layer for our database. We were not approved to utilize Entity or Linq to SQL for the data layer. It was primarily built by hand. A lot of the SQL is auto generated. An obvious down fall of this is the need to sanitize inputs prior to retrieval and insertion. What are the best methods for doing this?   this is might be really weird, but I have no idea what kinda wizardry of this. Basically, my Visual Studio stopped responding to my changes, it stopped building solution. I can comment code, which would completely ruin the logic of program, and Visual Studio will still run program that I guess it has in memory. It's really annoying, and I have no idea what it is. I keep restarting software, but it's still does the same. It's a licensed software. I was wondering If someone knew what was going on. Thanks!

I want to create a unittest for the program logic without it importing pythoncom (so I can run the test on Linux as well). What options are there? Can I do it without modifying the system under test? What I found so far: sys.modules["pythoncom"] = "test" import module_that_imports_pythoncom My problem with it is if I have: from pythoncom.something import something I'll get: ImportError: No module named something.something And sys.modules["something.something"] or sys.modules["pythoncom.something.something"] doesn't work. Any ideas?

  We had a requirement to build a ASP.NET 3.5 web application using web forms, WCF, ADO.NET and SQL Server. The users would connect via Internet. Recently we understood that it is possible that users would often remain disconnected and would have Internet access intermittently. I need to understand if we can create occasionally connected web application using asp.net 3.5 - what all technologies/features we need to use? Is MS Sync Framework the answer to the problem - is it a viable option to use with web application? Is windows application the right approach instead of web applications - where the business logic would be run at the client itself, using local SQL Express editions with data then been synced up with Enterprise SQL server at server end when connection is established using replication and/or MS Sync framework. In that case is there a need to use WCF? Does Silverlight applications help in this context -building paritally connected web apps? Really appreciate if you can give pointers to how to go about this task of creating .net partially connected apps (not mobile apps)?

• Proper mechanism for sending PHP errors to the client

  Greetings, I was trying to discover a proper way to send captured errors or business logic exceptions to the client in an Ajax-PHP system. In my case, the browser needs to react differently depending on whether a request was successful or not. However in all the examples I've found, only a simple string is reported back to the browser in both cases. Eg: if (something worked) echo "Success!"; else echo "ERROR: that failed"; So when the browser gets back the Ajax response, the only way to know if an error occurred would be to parse the string (looking for 'error' perhaps). This seems clunky. Is there a better/proper way to send back the Ajax response & notify the browser of an error? Thank you.

• Database table schema design - varchar(n). Suitable choice of N

  Coming from a C background, I may be getting too anal about this and worrying unnecessarily about bits and bytes here. Still, I cant help thinking how the data is actually stored and that if I choose an N which is easily factorizable into a power of 2, the database will be more effecient in how it packs data etc. Using this "logic", I have a string field in a table which is a variable length up to 21 chars. I am tempted to use 32 instead of 21, for the reason given above - however now I am thinking that I am wasting disk space because there will be space allocated for 11 extra chars that are guaranteed to be never used. Since I envisage storing several tens of thousands of rows a day, it all adds up. Question: Mindful of all of the above, Should I declare varchar(21) or varchar(32) and why?
