2 way SSL between SOA and OSB

If you have a need to use 2 way SSL between SOA composite and external partner links, you can follow these steps. Create the identity keystores, trust keystores, and server certificates. Setup keystores and SSL on WebLogic Setup server to use 2 way SSL Configure your SOA composite's partner link to use 2 way SSL Configure SOA engine two ways SSL In this case, I use SOA and OSB for the test. I started with a separate OSB and SOA domains. I deployed two soap based proxies on OSB and two composites on SOA. In SOA, one composite invokes a OSB proxy service, the other is invoked by the OSB. Similarly, in OSB, one proxy invokes a SOA composite and the other is invoked by SOA. 1. Create the identity keystores, trust keystores and the server certificates Since this is a development environment, I use JDK's keytool to create the stores and use self signing certificate. For production environment, you should use certificates from a trusted certificate authority like Verisign. I created a script below to show what is needed in this step. The only requirement is when creating the SOA identity certificate, you MUST use the alias mykey. STOREPASS=welcome1KEYPASS=welcome1# generate identity keystore for soa and osb. You will need to import the partner's public cert into the trusted keystore used by SOA. The default trusted keystore for SOA is DemoTrust.jks and it is located in $MW_HOME/wlserver_10.3/server/lib. (This is set in the startup script -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStore). If you use your own trusted keystore, then you will need to import it into your own trusted keystore. keytool -importcert -alias osbkey -keystore $MW_HOME/wlserver_10.3/server/lib/DemoTrust.jks -storepass DemoTrustKeyStorePassPhrase -file osbcert.der -keypass $KEYPASS If you do not perform this step, you will encounter this exception in runtime when SOA invokes OSB service using 2 way SSL Message send failed: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target 2. Setup keystores and SSL on WebLogic First, you will need to login to the WebLogic console, navigate to the server's configuration->Keystore's tab. Change the Keystores type to Custom Identity and Custom Trust and enter the rest of the fields. Then you navigate to the SSL tab, enter the fields in the identity section and expand the Advanced section. Since I am using self signing cert on my VM enviornment, I disabled Hostname verification. In real production system, this should not be the case. I also enabled the option "Use Server Certs", so that the application uses the server cert to initiate https traffic (it is important to enable this in OSB). Last, you enable SSL listening port in the Server's configuration->General tab. 3. Setup server to use 2 way SSL If you follow the screen shot in previous step, you can see in the Server->Configuration->SSL->Advanced section, there is an option for Two Way Client Cert Behavior, you should set this to Client Certs Requested and Enforced. Repeat step 2 and 3 done on OSB. After all these configurations, you have to restart all the servers. 4. Configure your SOA composite's partner link to use 2 way SSL You do this by modifying the composite.xml in your project, locate the partner's link reference and add the property oracle.soa.two.way.ssl.enabled. <reference name="callosb" ui:wsdlLocation="helloword.wsdl"> <interface.wsdl interface="http://www.examples.com/wsdl/HelloService.wsdl#wsdl.interface(Hello_PortType)"/> <binding.ws port="http://www.examples.com/wsdl/HelloService.wsdl#wsdl.endpoint(Hello_Service/Hello_Port)" location="helloword.wsdl" soapVersion="1.1"> <property name="weblogic.wsee.wsat.transaction.flowOption" type="xs:string" many="false">WSDLDriven</property> <property name="oracle.soa.two.way.ssl.enabled">true</property> </binding.ws> </reference> In OSB, you should have checked the HTTPS required flag in the proxy's transport configuration. After this, rebuilt the composite jar file and ready to deploy in the EM console later. 5. Configure SOA engine two ways SSL Oracle SOA Suite uses both Oracle WebLogic Server and Sun Secure Socket Layer (SSL) stacks for two-way SSL configurations. For the inbound web service bindings, Oracle SOA Suite uses the Oracle WebLogic Server infrastructure and, therefore, the Oracle WebLogic Server libraries for SSL. This is already done by step 2 and 3 in the previous section. For the outbound web service bindings, Oracle SOA Suite uses JRF HttpClient and, therefore, the Sun JDK libraries for SSL. You do this by configuring the SOA Engine in the Enterprise Manager Console, select soa-infra->SOA Administration->Common Properties Then click at the link at the bottom of the page: "More SOA Infra Advances Infrastructure Configuration Properties" and then enter the full path of soa identity keystore in the value field of the KeyStoreLocation attribute. Click Apply and Return then navigate to the domain->security->credential. Here, you provide the password to the keystore. Note: the alias of the certficate must be mykey as described in step 1, so you only need to provide the password to the identity keystore. You accomplish this by: Click Create Map In the Map Name field, enter SOA, and click OK Click Create Key Enter the following details where the password is the password for the SOA identity keystore. 6. Test and Trouble Shooting Once the setup is complete and server restarted, you can deploy the composite in the EM console and test it. In case of error, you can read the server log file to determine the cause of the error. Need help with PHP web app bootstrapping error potentially related to Zend [migrated]

I am trying to get a program called OpenFISMA running on an Ubuntu AMI in AWS. The app is not really coded on the Ubuntu platform, but I am in my comfort zone there, and have tried both CentOS and OpenSUSE (both are sort of "native" for the app) for getting it working with the same or worse results. So, why not just get it working on Ubuntu? Anyway, the app is found here: www.openfisma.org and an install guide is found here: https://openfisma.atlassian.net/wiki/display/030100/Installation+Guide The install guide kind of sucks. It doesn't list dependencies in any coherent way or provide much of any detail (does not even mention Zend once on the entire page) so I've done a lot of work to divine the information I do have. This page provided some dependency inf (though again, Zend is not mentioned once): https://openfisma.atlassian.net/wiki/display/PUBLIC/RPM+Management#RPMManagement-BasicOverviewofRPMPackages Anyway, I got all the way through the install (so far as I could reconstruct it). I am going to the login page for the first time, and there should be some sort of bootstrapping occurring when I load the page. (I am not a programmer so I have no idea what it is doing there.) Anyway, I get a message on the web page that says: "An exception occurred while bootstrapping the application." /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed with an HP LaserJet p3005

Ever since 10.04, I can't print to an HP laserjet p3005. I'm even using an entirely different computer now with a fresh install of 10.10. I've tried with and without the latest hplip. Recently, sometimes I can get it to print a few things, but eventually it always fails (usually when printing a pdf from the document viewer (also doesn't work with adobe pdf reader)). Sometimes it fails so bad the printer gives an error saying it needs to be turned off and on again. I can't seem to find a fix anywhere, I've googled all over the past year and tried every fix I could find. It does say that the /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed. It also doesn't make a difference if I create the printer using hp-setup or ubuntu's own printing control panel. I delete and re-create the printer, no difference eventually. I use the default printer settings or custom settings, no difference. I can print perfectly find to a networked printer at home - an HP officejet 6310. It seems to be networked HP printers at work that I can't print to anymore (except occasionally right after re-installing the printer driver). What's the recommended way to install HP printer drivers and reset or clean out everything from before. Or where are the right logs to read or debug commands to do to find out what may be the real cause of the printing problems?

Using RIA DomainServices with ASP.NET and MVC 2

Recently, I started working on a new ASP.NET MVC 2 project and I wanted to reuse the data access (LINQ to SQL) and business logic methods (WCF RIA Services) that had been developed for a previous project that used Silverlight for the front-end. I figured that I would be able to instantiate the various DomainService classes from within my controller’s action methods, because after all, the code for those services didn’t look very complicated. WRONG! I didn’t realize at first that some of the functionality is handled automatically by the framework when the domain services are hosted as WCF services. After some initial searching, I came across an invaluable post by Joe McBride, which described how to get RIA Service .svc files to work in an MVC 2 Web Application, and another by Brad Abrams. Unfortunately, Brad’s solution was for an earlier preview release of RIA Services and no longer works with the version that I am running (PDC Preview). I have not tried the RC version of WCF RIA Services, so I am not sure if any of the issues I am having have been resolved, but I wanted to come up with a way to reuse the shared libraries so I wouldn’t have to write a non-RIA version that basically did the same thing. The classes I came up with work with the scenarios I have encountered so far, but I wanted to go ahead and post the code in case someone else is having the same trouble I had. Hopefully this will save you a few headaches! 1. Querying When I first tried to use a DomainService class to perform a query inside one of my controller’s action methods, I got an error stating that “This DomainService has not been initialized.” To solve this issue, I created an extension method for all DomainServices that creates the required DomainServiceContext and passes it to the service’s Initialize() method. Insert / Update / Delete Once I got the records showing up, I was trying to insert new records or update existing data when I ran into the next issue. I say issue because I wasn’t getting any kind of error, which made it a little difficult to track down. But once I realized that that the DataContext.SubmitChanges() method gets called automatically at the end of each domain service submit operation, I could start working on a way to mimic the behavior of a hosted domain service. What I came up with, was a base class called LinqToSqlRepository<T> that basically sits between your implementation and the default LinqToSqlDomainService<T> class. [EnableClientAccess()] public class NorthwindService : LinqToSqlRepository<NorthwindDataContext> { public IQueryable<Customer> GetCustomers() { return this.DataContext.Customers; } public void InsertCustomer(Customer customer) { this.DataContext.Customers.InsertOnSubmit(customer); } public void UpdateCustomer(Customer currentCustomer) { this.DataContext.Customers.TryAttach(currentCustomer, this.ChangeSet.GetOriginal(currentCustomer)); } public void DeleteCustomer(Customer customer) { this.DataContext.Customers.TryAttach(customer); this.DataContext.Customers.DeleteOnSubmit(customer); } } Notice the new base class name (just change LinqToSqlDomainService to LinqToSqlRepository). I also added a couple of DataContext (for Table<T>) extension methods called TryAttach that will check to see if the supplied entity is already attached before attempting to attach it, which would cause an error! 3. LinqToSqlRepository<T> Below is the code for the LinqToSqlRepository class. Conclusion So there you have it, a fully functional Repository implementation for your RIA Domain Services that can be consumed by your ASP.NET and MVC applications. I have uploaded the source code along with unit tests and a sample web application that queries the Customers table from inside a Controller, as well as a Silverlight usage example. Connecting to MSP430 via /dev/ttyACM0

I'd like some suggestions about how to fix garbled serial output from a device connected on /dev/ttyACM0. Lately I've been working on a development project making use of TI's MSP430 microcontroller (specifically the eZ430-RF2560). Over on this thread you can see we've been testing some code and have found that the output of the microcontroller over serial is garbled. The btstack provides simple counter test program. When we run the program and look at the serial port output using PuTTY on Windows 7 we see: rfcomm_send_internal cid 117 doesn't exist! BTstack counter 26230 rfcomm_send_internal cid 117 doesn't exist! BTstack counter 26231 However if we connect from various Ubuntu clients we get something like: Stt.R. BTacn 0 BTacn 002BTacn 0 BTcct 04BTtacoe 5BTacun My current belief is that this is because the device is being detected by cdc_acm as a generic USB ACM device. Another thread about a similar microcontroller suggests that the device should use a specific usb serial driver. We've verified that the module is compiled on our system and did a "modprobe ti_usb_3410_5052" but this had no effect on cdc_acm. Nuggets of wisdom?

There are many quotes from famous computer scientists that have become the wisdom that guides our profession. For example: "Premature optimization is the root of all evil in programming." Donald Knuth (citing Hoare's Dictum) "Everyone knows that debugging is twice as hard as writing a program in the first place. So if you're as clever as you can be when you write it, how will you ever debug it?" Brian Kernighan And so on. My question is, what are your favorite words of wisdom about programming from someone who is not famous? Was it a friend, a coworker, or a teacher, or a family member? For example, a technical writer friend of mine said: "You can't get the right answers unless you ask the right questions." Thanks for all the contributions! The answer I selected was (a) specifically coding-related, and (b) stated by someone who is not technically famous (though he has a popular blog and a podcast and runs StackOverflow). I.e. he's no Bill Gates or Yogi Berra.

Using CheckPoint SNX with RSA SecurID Software Token to connect to VPN

I have a fairly specific issue that I'm hoping someone else out in the community has had to tackle with success. My company uses CheckPoint VPN clients on Windows XP machines with RSA SecurID software to generate the tokens. The beauty is that once you generate a token code on the software, you can enter it into any machine trying to connect via VPN and with your username get connected. So, I've got Ubuntu 10.10 32bit on a tower and formerly on a laptop. Through several posts around the web, I was able to get SNX installed on the laptop, plug in my server connection information and be asked for a password only to have the connection fail. I used to debug mode and was able to see that the application was trying to and failing at writing a registry value, but I believe that to be a symptom of a different issue, even though I tried to find a way to remedy that. I'm wondering if anyone out there is on a similar configuration and was able to connect with SNX using an RSA token? If so, what steps did you take to setup and what problems/solutions did you encounter?

Why does my PowerBook display “Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!” and stop booting?

I have an old PowerBook G4 that worked (more or less) fine with a previous installation of Ubuntu Desktop 12.04. A few days ago I decided to install Ubuntu Server instead, and got a copy of Ubuntu Server 12.10. The installation seemed to complete successfully, but now, whenever I try to boot the system, it simply halts at some point after I unlock the hard disk. There is a lot of text on the screen (which is normal for me during a boot, except now it's mostly errors and debug information), the last of which is this: [ 26.338228] Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed! Pressing control command power to force a reboot yields exactly the same results. A search for the error message turned up many temporary solutions involving kernel parameters, but none of them have worked for me. I don't think I can remove the default set of parameters (which I think is quiet splash), but I can pass additional parameters on boot. I've tried booting on AC and battery power, as well as using these combinations of kernel parameters while on battery power: acpi=enable pci=noacpi pci=assign-busse acpi=ht acpi=off nomodeset nomodeset acpi=off Why am I getting this error and how can I fix it?

How to install mod_ssl for Apache

Ok So I installed Apache httpd a while ago and have recently come back to it to try setup SSL and get it serving several different tomcat servers. At the moment I have two completely separate tomcat instances serving up to slightly different versions (one for dev and one for demo say) my web app to two different ports; mydomain.com:8081 and mydomain.com:8082 I've successfully (back in Jan) used mod_jk to get httpd to serve those same tomcat instances to http://www.mydomain.com:8090/dev and http://www.mydomain.com:8090/demo (8090 cos I've got another app running on 8080 via Jetty at this stage) using the following code in httpd.conf; LoadModule jk_module modules/mod_jk.so JkWorkersFile conf/workers.properties JkLogFile logs/mod_jk.log JkLogLevel debug <VirtualHost *:8090> JkMount /devd* tomcatDev JkMount /demo* tomcatDemo </VirtualHost> What I'm not trying to do is enable SSL I've added the following to httpd.conf Listen 443 <VirtualHost _default_:443> JkMount /dev* tomcatDev JkMount /demo* tomcatDemo SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile "/opt/httpd/conf/localhost.crt" SSLCertificateKeyFile "/opt/httpd/conf/keystore.key" </VirtualHost> But when I try to restart Apache with "apachectl restart" (yes after shutting down that other app I mentioned so it doesn't toy with https connections) I continuously get the error; "Invalid command 'SSLEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration. httpd not running, trying to start" I've looked in the httpd/modules dir and indeed there is no mod_ssl, only mod_jk.so and httpd.exp. I've tried using yum to install mod_ssl, it says its already installed. Indeed I can locate mod_ssl.so in /usr/lib/httpd/modules but this is NOT the path to where I've installed httpd which is /opt/httpd and in fact /usr/lib/httpd contains nothing but the modules dir. Can anyone tell me how to install mod_ssl properly for my installed location of httpd so I can get past this error:

Are `break` and `continue` bad programming practices?

My boss keeps mentioning nonchalantly that bad programmers use break and continue in loops. I use them all the time because they make sense; let me show you the inspiration: function verify(object) { if (object->value < 0) return false; if (object->value > object->max_value) return false; if (object->name == "") return false; ... } The point here is that first the function checks that the conditions are correct, then executes the actual functionality. IMO same applies with loops: while (primary_condition) { if (loop_count > 1000) break; if (time_exect > 3600) break; if (this->data == "undefined") continue; if (this->skip == true) continue; ... } I think this makes it easier to read & debug; but I also don't see a downside. Please comment.

The full error in Microsoft Visual Studio on a compile looks like this: error CS1548: Cryptographic failure while signing assembly 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Samples\Analysis Services\Programmability\AMO\AMOAdventureWorks\CS\StoredProcedures\obj\Debug\StoredProcedures.dll' This is likely due to a missing strong key pair value file. The easiest way to solve this problem is to create a new one. Navigate to: Microsoft Visual Studio 2010>Visual Studio Tools>Visual Studio x64 Win64 Command Prompt (2010) [if you aren't on an x64 box, pick another command prompt option that fits] Once the MS-Dos window displays, type in this statement: sn -k c:\SampleKey.snk Then copy the output *.snk file to project directory, or the *referenced directory. Remove the old reference to the *.snk file from the project. Add the paired key back to the project as an existing item. When you add back the *.snk file to the project, you will see that the *.snk file is no longer missing. Our work is done! *referenced directory: Pay attention to the original error message on compile. The *.snk file that is referenced may be in a directory path you aren't expecting--so you will still get the error unless you change the directory path or write the file to the directory the program is expecting to find the *.snk file.

2D character controller in unity (trying to get old-school platformers back)

This days I'm trying to create a 2D character controller with unity (using phisics). I'm fairly new to physic engines and it is really hard to get the control feel I'm looking for. I have setup a physic material that makes no bouncing and 0 friction when moving and 1 friction with stand still. The main problem is that I have colliders with slopes and the velocity changes from going up (slower) , going down the slope (faster) and walk on a straight collider (normal). How could this be fixed? As you see I'm applying allways same velocity for x axis. For the player I have it setup with a sphere at feet position that is the rigidbody I'm applying forces to. Any other tip that could make my life easier with this are welcomed :). P.D. While coming home I have noticed I could solve this applying a constant force parallel to the surface the player is walking, but don't know if it is best method.

Code Bubbles: Disruption comes to the IDE

If you’re like me, you might see the open source Eclipse IDE as a copy or, more generously, a port of the Microsoft’s Visual Studio for the non-.NET world. It’s not that Microsoft invented the IDE (I would credit Borland with that), but they really took the idea and ran with it for the first version of Visual Studio .NET in 2002. The question is whether someone outside of Microsoft could take the modern IDE yet another major step forward in both principle and productivity. I think that has actually happened already, and I think the innovator in question is a second-year Computer Science PhD student at Brown, named Andrew Bragdon. His project, which he calls Code Bubbles, is an IDE that allows for editing, debugging and exploration of code in “bubbles” which remind me a little bit of the discrete note tiles on OneNote…but they’re much more than that. Bubbles actually allow for call stack traversal, saved debug sessions, sophisticated breakpoint and value watch behaviors and more. And because bubbles, unlike windows, are borderless, and focus on code fragments rather than whole files, the de-cluttering effect is unbelievably liberating. The best way to understand what Code Bubbles does is to watch the screencast video: Code Bubbles is an IDE for Java development. Why didn’t Microsoft come up with something like this for .NET devs? Between the existing features in Visual Studio 2010, its WPF code editor, and the fact that OneNote’s UI bears some affinity to Code Bubbles’, it’s interesting that Microsoft still has not thought outside of its own “box” to get us something like this. Heck, that’s easy for me to say. But it’s easy for you to say that you’d like something like this in Visual Studio sometime soon. /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed

Ever since 10.04, I can't print to an HP laserjet p3005. I'm even using an entirely different computer now with a fresh install of 10.10. I've tried with and without the latest hplip. Recently, sometimes I can get it to print a few things, but eventually it always fails (usually when printing a pdf from the document viewer (also doesn't work with adobe pdf reader)). Sometimes it fails so bad the printer gives an error saying it needs to be turned off and on again. I can't seem to find a fix anywhere, I've googled all over the past year and tried every fix I could find. It does say that the /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed. It also doesn't make a difference if I create the printer using hp-setup or ubuntu's own printing control panel. I delete and re-create the printer, no difference eventually. I use the default printer settings or custom settings, no difference. I can print perfectly find to a networked printer at home - an HP officejet 6310. It seems to be networked HP printers at work that I can't print to anymore (except occasionally right after re-installing the printer driver). What's the recommended way to install HP printer drivers and reset or clean out everything from before. Or where are the right logs to read or debug commands to do to find out what may be the real cause of the printing problems?

Ubuntu 14.04: After login, top- and sidepanel don't load and system settings don't open

I have Ubuntu 14.04 on a Medion Erazer with the Nvidia GTX570M card. At first, while I had not installed the last nvidia driver, each time I would try to suspend my pc it would freeze frame on the login. Once I managed to install the nvidia drivers, everything seemed to work up until I noticed that suddenly the system settings would not open anymore. I then rebooted my pc, but when I logged in I just end up with my cursor but no top panel or side pannel. Thankfully, I had installed the gnome desktops which works, except for the fact the system settings do not open also in the gnome desktop. I have tried following: Problems after upgrading to 14.04 (only background and pointer after login) except for reinstalling nvidia, since then I would be back at square one with suspend not working. Performance Optimization – It Is Faster When You Can Measure It

Performance optimization in bigger systems is hard because the measured numbers can vary greatly depending on the measurement method of your choice. To measure execution timing of specific methods in your application you usually use Time Measurement Method Potential Pitfalls Stopwatch Most accurate method on recent processors. Internally it uses the RDTSC instruction. Since the counter is processor specific you can get greatly different values when your thread is scheduled to another core or the core goes into a power saving mode. But things do change luckily: Intel's Designer's vol3b, section 16.11.1 "16.11.1 Invariant TSC The time stamp counter in newer processors may support an enhancement, referred to as invariant TSC. Processor's support for invariant TSC is indicated by CPUID.80000007H:EDX[8]. The invariant TSC will run at a constant rate in all ACPI P-, C-. and T-states. This is the architectural behavior moving forward. On processors with invariant TSC support, the OS may use the TSC for wall clock timer services (instead of ACPI or HPET timers). TSC reads are much more efficient and do not incur the overhead associated with a ring transition or access to a platform resource." DateTime.Now Good but it has only a resolution of 16ms which can be not enough if you want more accuracy. Reporting Method Potential Pitfalls Console.WriteLine Ok if not called too often. Debug.Print Are you really measuring performance with Debug Builds? Shame on you. Trace.WriteLine Better but you need to plug in some good output listener like a trace file. But be aware that the first time you call this method it will read your app.config and deserialize your system.diagnostics section which does also take time. In general it is a good idea to use some tracing library which does measure the timing for you and you only need to decorate some methods with tracing so you can later verify if something has changed for the better or worse. In my previous article I did compare measuring performance with quantum mechanics. This analogy does work surprising well. When you measure a quantum system there is a lower limit how accurately you can measure something. The Heisenberg uncertainty relation does tell us that you cannot measure of a quantum system the impulse and location of a particle at the same time with infinite accuracy. For programmers the two variables are execution time and memory allocations. If you try to measure the timings of all methods in your application you will need to store them somewhere. The fastest storage space besides the CPU cache is the memory. But if your timing values do consume all available memory there is no memory left for the actual application to run. On the other hand if you try to record all memory allocations of your application you will also need to store the data somewhere. This will cost you memory and execution time. These constraints are always there and regardless how good the marketing of tool vendors for performance and memory profilers are: Any measurement will disturb the system in a non predictable way. Commercial tool vendors will tell you they do calculate this overhead and subtract it from the measured values to give you the most accurate values but in reality it is not entirely true. After falling into the trap to trust the profiler timings several times I have got into the habit to Measure with a profiler to get an idea where potential bottlenecks are. Measure again with tracing only the specific methods to check if this method is really worth optimizing. Optimize it Measure again. Be surprised that your optimization has made things worse. Think harder Implement something that really works. Measure again Finished! - Or look for the next bottleneck. Recently I have looked into issues with serialization performance. For serialization DataContractSerializer was used and I was not sure if XML is really the most optimal wire format. After looking around I have found protobuf-net which uses Googles Protocol Buffer format which is a compact binary serialization format. What is good for Google should be good for us. Lets use it! After switching over to protbuf-net the transfered wire data has dropped by a factor two (good) and the performance has worsened by nearly a factor two. How is that possible? We have measured it? Protobuf-net is much faster! As it turns out protobuf-net is faster but it has a cost: For the first time a type is de/serialized it does use some very smart code-gen which does not come for free. Lets try to measure this one by setting of our performance test app the Runs value not to one million but to 1. Serializer Time in ms N objects protobuf-net 85 1 DataContract 24 1 The code-gen overhead is significant and can take up to 200ms for more complex types. The break even point where the code-gen cost is amortized by its faster serialization performance is (assuming small objects) somewhere between 20.000-40.000 serialized objects. As it turned out my specific scenario involved about 100 types and 1000 serializations in total. That explains why the good old DataContractSerializer is not so easy to take out of business. The final approach I ended up was to reduce the number of types and to serialize primitive types via BinaryWriter directly which turned out to be a pretty good alternative. It sounded good until I measured again and found that my optimizations so far do not help much. After looking more deeper at the profiling data I did found that one of the 1000 calls did take 50% of the time. So how do I find out which call it was? Normal profilers do fail short at this discipline. A (totally undeserved) relatively unknown profiler is SpeedTrace which does unlike normal profilers create traces of your applications by instrumenting your IL code at runtime. This way you can look at the full call stack of the one slow serializer call to find out if this stack was something special. Unfortunately the call stack showed nothing special. But luckily I have my own tracing as well and I could see that the slow serializer call did happen during the serialization of a bool value. When you encounter after much analysis something unreasonable you cannot explain it then the chances are good that your thread was suspended by the garbage collector. If there is a problem with excessive GCs remains to be investigated but so far the serialization performance seems to be mostly ok. When you do profile a complex system with many interconnected processes you can never be sure that the timings you just did measure are accurate at all. Some process might be hitting the disc slowing things down for all other processes for some seconds as well. There is a big difference between warm and cold startup. If you restart all processes you can basically forget the first run because of the OS disc cache, JIT and GCs make the measured timings very flexible. When you are in need of a random number generator you should measure cold startup times of a sufficiently complex system. After the first run you can try again getting different and much lower numbers. Now try again at least two times to get some feeling how stable the numbers are. Oh and try to do the same thing the next day. It might be that the bottleneck you found yesterday is gone today. Thanks to GC and other random stuff it can become pretty hard to find stuff worth optimizing if no big bottlenecks except bloatloads of code are left anymore. When I have found a spot worth optimizing I do make the code changes and do measure again to check if something has changed. If it has got slower and I am certain that my change should have made it faster I can blame the GC again. The thing is that if you optimize stuff and you allocate less objects the GC times will shift to some other location. If you are unlucky it will make your faster working code slower because you see now GCs at times where none were before. This is where the stuff does get really tricky. A safe escape hatch is to create a repro of the slow code in an isolated application so you can change things fast in a reliable manner. Then the normal profilers do also start working again. As Vance Morrison does point out it is much more complex to profile a system against the wall clock compared to optimize for CPU time. The reason is that for wall clock time analysis you need to understand how your system does work and which threads (if you have not one but perhaps 20) are causing a visible delay to the end user and which threads can wait a long time without affecting the user experience at all. ADF Bounded Taskflow Activation

hey guys, It's really been a while since I last blogged. Just came across a hard-to-debug scenario, so thought of sharing it for the benefit of ADF developers.I had a page fragment(jsff) wrapped inside a bounded taskflow, for which the activation was conditional and was based on a requestScope property (be it a requestScope variable or a property coming from a requestScope bean). As soon as the taskflow activates and page renders the requestScope parameters life span ends. After that, when you raise an event inside the page (click of commandLink, moseHover, valueChange event etc) then for the first time the event gets fired but it fails to affect the change in the page, moreover, for the subsequent times the event itself doesn't get fired. Any guesses as to what could be the culprit..?I guess, I already gave the reason in the initial paragraph. For the first time when the event gets fired, the fwk sees that the page is already lying in inactivate state, so it fails to affect the change and for subsequent times it doesn't even fire the event because it already knew that the page/region is inactive. So, in such a scenario we must use either a pageFlowScope property or transientVO property which could exist till the page's life span.
