• Programming with midi, and tuning notes to specific frequencies

  I am working on a project in which I need to be able to generate midi notes of varying frequencies with as much accuracy as possible. I originally tried to write my program in Java, but it turns out that the sound.midi package does not support changing the tunings of notes unless the frequencies are Equal Tempered frequencies (or at least it didn't in 1.4, and I haven't been able to find evidence that this has been fixed in recent versions). I have been trying to find a more appropriate language/library to accomplish this task, but since this is my first time programming with MIDI and my need for specific tuning functionality is essential, I have been having considerable trouble finding exactly what I need. I am looking for advice from people who have experience writing MIDI programs as to what languages are useful, especially for tuning notes to specific frequencies. Any links to websites with API docs and example code would also be extremely helpful.

• Can I create a collection in Scala that uses different equals/hashCode/compare implementations?

  I'm looking for as simple way to create an identity set. I just want to be able to keep track of whether or not I've "seen" a particular object while traversing a graph. I can't use a regular Set because Set uses "==" (the equals method in Scala) to compare elements. What I want is a Set that uses "eq." Is there any way to create a Set in Scala that uses some application-specified method for testing equality rather than calling equals on the set elements? I looked for some kind of "wrapEquals" method that I could override but did not find it. I know that I could use Java's IdentityHashMap, but I'm looking for something more general-purpose. Another idea I had was to just wrap each set element in another object that implements equals in terms of eq, but it's wasteful to generate tons of new objects just to get a new equals implementation. • [C#] How to consume web service adheres to the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern?

  I am following the example from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8wy069k1.aspx to consume a web service implemented (by 3rd party) using the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern. However, my program needs to do multiple calls to the DoStuffAsync() hence will get back as many DoStuffCompleted. I chose the overload which takes an extra parameter - Object userState to distinguish them. My first question is: Is it valid to cast a GUID to Object as below, where GUID is used to generate unique taskID? Object userState = Guid.NewGuid(); Secondly, do I need to spawn off a new thread for each DoStuffAsync() call, since I am calling it multiple times? Also, would be nice to have some online examples or tutorials on this subject. (I've been googling for it the whole day and didn't get much back) Many thanks

• Is Pex (Test generation) really usefull tool?

  Yes, it is possible to generate tests on boundary values for functions like "Sum" or "Divide". Pex is a good tool here. But more often we create tests on business behaviour. Let's consider example from classic Beck's tdd book: [Test] public void ShouldRoundOnCreation() { Money money = new Money(20.678); Assert.AreEqual(20.68,money.Amount); Assert.AreEqual(2068,money.Cents); } Can this test be generated? No :) 95 % of tests in my projects check business logic, and can not be generated. Pex (Especially in pair with Moles) can give 100% code coverage, but a high code coverage rate of a test suite does never indicate, that code is well tested - It only gives false confidence that everything is tested. And this is very dangerous. So, the question is - Is Pex really usefull tool?

• What causes subprocess.call to output blank file when attempting db export with mysqldump?

  I am having some problems using subprocess.call to export a database using mysqldump. I'm using Python 3.1 installed on Windows 7. from time import gmtime, strftime import subprocess DumpDir = "c:/apps/sqlbackup/"; DumpFile = "mysqldump-" + strftime("%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M-%S", gmtime()) + ".sql"; params = [r"mysqldump --user root --password=mypassword --force --flush-privileges --compress --comments mydatabase --result-file=" + DumpDir + DumpFile]; subprocess.call(params, shell=True); The above code causes a blank file to be created in the DumpDir. I've tried getting python to print the command so I can test it via the CMD prompt using: print(subprocess.list2cmdline(params)); If I paste the output to the CMD prompt and execute it, everything works fine. Any ideas? I'm new to Python, so I am sure the answer is simple but I've tried so many variations to get this working that I just can't figure this out.

When I run the code to generate the XML in an empty page, it runs without error, if I call the code within my webpage it throws this error. The only 'nbsp' on the page is a doctype declaration at the top of the XSLT: <!DOCTYPE xsl:stylesheet [ <!ENTITY nbsp "&#x00A0;"> ]> I'm at a loss as to where this error is coming from and I am looking for suggestions please! What is the correct way of manually adding data this way?

  I have 2 squid servers load-balanced with F5 LTMs set up as a reverse proxy. My problem: origin server A hosts domains 1, 2, and 3 origin server B hosts domains 4 and 5. how can I set up squid so that it will cache all vhosts for both servers? my current config: cache_peer serverA parent 80 0 round-robin no-query originserver login=PASS If I add a second line: cache_peer serverB parent 80 0 round-robin no-query originserver login=PASS it only caches domains on serverB, requests for serverA content generate 404 errors. I don't use squid a whole lot, and all help is appreciated. thanks.

• Writing a telnet client

  HI, I have a device that exposes a telnet interface which you can log into using a username and password and then manipulate the working of the device. I have to write a C program that hides the telnet aspect from the client and instead provides an interface for the user to control the device. What would be a good way to proceed. I tried writing a simple socket program but it stops at the login prompt. My guess is that i am not following the TCP protocol. Has anyone attempted this, is there an opensource library out there to do this? Thanks

Wondering if anyone knows of a more up-to-date (ideally Mac based) tutorial that uses TextMate (or XCode if it's indeed preferred, or even just the command line). TextMate is appealing to me but wondering how to work scrips like ruby script/generate controller etc. into workflow or if switching between command-line & TextMate is standard operating procedure... • How can I update the version of an APK which I did not create myself

  I am new to Android development. I am using a x-platform development tool which builds and signs the APK for me. This tool has a bug and it does not generate APK's with the version number I specify, all APK's generated are version 1.0. I would like to unpack the APK, edit the version number, and then resign and repackage it. It was signed using my keystore originally, so I have the keys needed to sign it again. How can this be done?

• How do I get hyphens in my attribute names in Flex?

  Flex has an issue with hyphens in xml. I need to generate an xml object with hyphens in the attribute for a Google Checkout implementation. I can get away with: var xml:XML = <item-description/>; and var xml:XML = <item-description the-name="foo"/>; but what I need to do is set the value of an attribute like this: var timestamp:String = methodToGetMyTimestampString(); var xml:XML = <item-desc/>; xml@start-date = timestamp; but I can't do that. Since flex doesn't like the hyphens, I don't know how to get or set attributes with hyphens in the name.

  Hi guys, I have deployed successfully a C# windows service on a windows 7 machine. Now, when I try to create a file using this code : FileStream os = new FileStream(String.Format(folderName, fileName), FileMode.Create); I get Access to filepath is denied. In the service Installer I set the following parameters to : this.serviceProcessInstaller1.Account = System.ServiceProcess.ServiceAccount.LocalSystem; this.serviceProcessInstaller1.Password = "Pass"; this.serviceProcessInstaller1.Username = "Administrator" I added all the possible accounts with Full permissions to the folder where I want to create the file but nothing helped. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated

• For Loop help In a Hash Cracker Homework.

  On the homework I am working on we are making a hash cracker. I am implementing it so as to have my cracker. java call worker.java. Worker.java implements Runnable. Worker is to take the start and end of a list of char, the hash it is to crack, and the max length of the password that made the hash. I know I want to do a loop in run() BUT I cannot think of how I would do it so it would go to the given max pasword length. I have posted the code I have so far. Any directions or areas I should look into.... I thought there was a way to do this with a certain way to write the loop but I don't know or can't find the correct syntax. Oh.. also. • Calculating the pixel size of a string with Python

  I have a Python script which needs to calculate the exact size of arbitrary strings displayed in arbitrary fonts in order to generate simple diagrams. I can easily do it with Tkinter. • Using gmail as SMTP server in Java web app is slow

  Hi, I was wondering if anyone might be able to explain to me why it's taking nearly 30 seconds each time my Java web app sends an email using Gmail's SMTP server? See the following timestamps: 13/04/2010-22:24:27:281 DEBUG test.service.impl.SynchronousEmailService - Before sending mail. 13/04/2010-22:24:52:625 DEBUG test.service.impl.SynchronousEmailService - After sending mail. I'm using spring's JavaMailSender class with the following settings: email.host=smtp.gmail.com [email protected] email.password=mypassword email.port=465 mail.smtp.auth.required=true Note that the mail is getting sent and I'm receiving it fine, there's just this delay which is resulting in a slow experience for the application user. If you know how I can diagnose the problem myself that would be good too :)

• How can I get PHP to compile a LaTeX document if it (www-data) can't get access to the required packages?

  I have a PHP script that compiles LaTeX documents with the use of: exec('cd /path/to/doc && /usr/bin/latexmk -pdf filename.tex'); This is working for some of my LaTeX documents but my latest document doesn't compile and a look at the log reveals: !pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file ecrm1000): Font ecrm1000 at 600 not found ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! Which I have found is the result of LaTeX not being able to see the required font packages. When I run the same compile command under my username the document compiles as it should. So my question is, how can I get PHP (executing as www-data) to get access to the necessary LaTeX packages? I have tried installing the required package under the www-data account using: sudo -u www-data sudo apt-get install texlive-fonts-recommended but it askes for www-data's password, which I don't believe was set by me and isn't anything I've thrown at it. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 if it's any help.

  Hi! I have a smart client application being deployed with a CickOnce webpage. here's the current scenario. User runs the application, and the application shows a login form. User enters ID/Password in the login form, and the application sends that information to the server. The server authenticates the user and sends configuration and data to the application. Different users have different configuration and data for their application. I was concerned that anyone can download the application from the webpage if they know the URL. So I'm trying to change the authentication scheme, so that users can login at the webpage to download the application. I want to send the authentication info from the webpage(Program running at the server) to the smart client app, so that application can download the configuration information from the server, without prompting users to make a login again. How can the webpage send the ID/Passoword to the application securely?
