  I would like to know if there is any weight associated with a html link (its backlink) when google does crawling/indexing. • Unable to access the server via SSH?

  when I am trying to access the server through ssh it says: ssh: connect to host xx.yyy.zzz.x port 22: Connection refused and on the server in auth.log it shows following log entry: Address xx.yyy.zzz.x maps to xx.yyy.zzz.x.static-pune-vsnl.net.in, but this does not map back to the address - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT! I have created a user account for that user and it is also in enabled status.   Hi! I have very a simple question. How to recover a .ogv file on my /home ext4 partition? I overwrote the .ogv file (I confused input and output in Arista transcoder). I did research. TestDisk can undelete files on FAT and NTFS, but not on EXT4. PhotoRec does not support .ogv recovering. • Do you use to third party companies to review your company's code?

  I am looking to get the following - Basic code review to make sure they follow the guidelines imposed. Security code analysis to make sure there are no loopholes. No performance bottlenecks by doing a load test etc. We have lot of code coming in from third parties and is becoming laborious to manage code reviews and hence looking to see if others employ such practices. I understand that it may be a concern for some and would raise the question "Well, who is going to make sure the agency is doing their job right?" But basically I am just looking for a third party who can hold all vendor code to the same standards.

• Installing wireless drivers without internet access [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How can I install and download drivers without internet? (This is related to my other question; my approach there didn't work.) My friend has (I'm quite sure) a Broadcom wireless chipset. However, he doesn't have any wired internet access on the machine, so his only option is to boot into Windows (he is using Wubi) and download packages there. This means we can't use the Hardware Drivers dialog to install the drivers. He can't fetch the repository information, so the Broadcom driver packages aren't showing up in Synaptic. Is there any way to get Wi-Fi working?

  I've got a question concerning node.js performance. There is quite lot of "benchmarks" and a lot of fuss about great performance of node.js. But how does it stand in real world? Not just process empty request at high speed. If someone could try to compare this scenario: Java (or equivalent) server running an application with complex business logic between receiving request and sending response. How would node.js deal with it? If there was need for a lot of JavaScript processing on server side, is node.js really so fast that it can execute JavaScript, and stand a chance against more heavyveight competitors?

• Good ergonomic keyboards for ruby/rails programmer using vim (on Mac) [closed]

  I'm looking to buy an ergonomic keyboard but I'm unable to find answers for my specific needs. I'm a programmer so I need to be able to have quick/easy access to my curly brace and bracket keys. I use vim extensively so having the ctrl and esc keys in a easier to reach location would help. I'm also a mac user (doing ruby/rails dev). With all these things in mind, what are some good options for ergonomic keyboards? I'm afraid someone will see this as "off topic" but please realize I need to ask fellow programmers. For example, I was thinking of the Kinesis Keyboard but read some reviews saying it's not good for programming. That's when I realized other programmers would be the best at answering this question.

  I am using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick, when I try to open a plain text file using a program x, I do right click to access the "open with" application list. Suppose my current "open with" list is like below -- application z application y application x But I want it to be like -- application x application y application z i.e. I want to change the order of the list. I know that I can fix a "default program" for a particular file, but that's not what I am looking for. My question is which file defines this "open with" preferences? and if there is any way to tweak it. Any idea?

  On a site that I'm working on, I'm trying to find ways of enforcing a one-person, one-account rule. In general, we'd like to do this by providing options to authenticate users with third-party services that provide this assurance. For example, it's possible to authenticate with Facebook and check whether the user is considered "verified" by Facebook (which means they must have provided either a phone number or credit card). This is roughly the level of identity verification we require--we're not doing banking or anything like that. But we want to give the user options. My question is, who else, besides Facebook, provides this? (uncertain of the proper SE forum, please comment if there's a better SE site to ask this)

• Why are KDE components being installed/updated on 12.04 with GNOME?

  I am not yet fully versed with the components installed by default on my machine, so I will apologize in advance if my question is silly. shows that a lot many of (what I assume are) KDE components (libk*, kde*, etc.) are being installed/updated on my machine. That is just the output from sudo apt-fast update && sudo apt-fast dist-upgrade -y from a few minutes ago. Can anyone tell me why? Can I safely remove them? If yes, how? • Is there a way to group 2 or 3 gui windows so that they don't get lost behind other open windows?

  For instance floating panels and main window in Gimp are independent windows. If I change focus to a full window (e.g. Firefox by doing Alt-Shift) and go back to the main Gimp window I don't get back the floating panels also (I have to change to them as well in order to see them). It would be great if the 3 windows can be "tied" (or linked) together in order that they don't get lost behind other open windows when I change back to (make active window) any of them? I think this configuration (if it exists) should show itself more obviously in the gnome environment. This question seems to address the same problem but it doesn't seem to be accurately answered.

  I want to create a subdomain for a site hosted by Jimdo (a DIY website builder). Jimdo does not allow subdomains however. I am trying to find a workaround where a subdomain is hosted elsewhere but everything else remains as it is. E.g. I use their email service and I want to keep it. The domain is not hosted by Jimdo, but by a host that allows me to edit my zones. It points to the Jimdo NS. I have independent hosting where I have NS information. This is where I want to host my subdomain. My thinking was that I could use ZoneEdit as a "fork" that allows me to keep using my Jimdo page like before and, at the same time, directs a subdomain to another host. Provided this is possible: Question: How do I configure ZoneEdit CNAME or NS records to forward visitors to my website and my email to my Jimdo mail account while pointing a subdomain to another host?

However this is just giving me the info if that content is good enough or not. However for my scenario I need to test whether disallowing some patterns is being indexed or not. For example I have something like this below in my robots.txt disallow:/pattern* My understanding is the URLs with word pattern should not crawled, but how do I test this pattern is enforced while indexing the website?

(Assume we are using a HTML5 compatible browser) The main things I can think of Rendering text on screen Animating sprites (using images/css) Input (capturing the arrow keys and getting relative mouse positions) Perhaps some preloading resource or dynamically loading resources and choosing order Sound (but I am unsure how important this will be to me at first). Perhaps with mixing and chaining sounds or looping forever until stop. Networking (low priority) to connect a user to another or to continuously GET data without multiple request (I know this exist but I don't know how easy it is to setup or use. • Why is Cocoa using an old version of Unicode? [closed]

  While I was searching for something in the Apple docs, I stumble on this: illegalCharacterSet Returns a character set containing values in the category of Non-Characters or that have not yet been defined in version 3.2 of the Unicode standard. On the Unicode website, I find that the latest version is 6.1.0. That's a lot of major versions higher than what Cocoa supports. Does somebody know why Apple doesn't upgrade their framework? My more important question is: Are there problems for not doing having support for Unicode 3.2+? Will I have problems reading Unicode files created on other systems with a more recent version of Unicode?

  In a lot of places I interviewed recently, I have been asked many a times if I have worked with shaders. Even though, I have read and understand the pipeline, the answer to that question has been no. Recently, one of the places asked me if I can send them a sample of 'something' that is "visually polished". So, I decided to take the plunge and wrote some simple shader in GLSL(with opengl).I now have a basic setup where I can use vbos with glsl shaders. I have a very short window left to send something to them and I was wondering if someone with experience, could suggest an idea that is interesting enough to grab someone's attention. Thanks

• Are programming languages perfect?

  I'm not sure if I'm being naive, as I'm still a student, but a curious question came to my mind. In another thread here, a user stated that in order to protect against piracy of your software, you must have perfect software. So is it possible to have perfect software? This is an extremely silly hypothetical situation, but if you were to gather the most talented and gifted programmers in the world and have them spend years trying to create 'perfect' software, could they be successful? Could it be that not a single exploitable bug could be created? Or are there flaws in programming languages that can still, no matter how hard you try, cause bugs that allow your program to be hijacked? As you can tell, I know nothing about security, but essentially what I'm asking is: is the reason why software is easily exploitable the fact that imperfect human beings create it, or that imperfect programming languages are being used?

In previous question I got an advice to develop my own driver for this devices, but this will take a while. • Boot-Repair after messing up NTFS partition

  I posted this question explaining what happened after I tried to create a new swap partition on a Win/Ubuntu dual-boot machine. I have since created a live-boot USB and installed Boot-Repair. I had it "recommend repairs", after which it tried repairing the wubi filesystems, which as far as I'm aware was not necessary. I'm not sure where to go from here; I don't care very much about backing up my files, I just want to be able to boot the machine. In the Advanced Options the "Repair Windows boot files" box is uncheckable both GRUB tabs are unclickable (I do have GRUB installed) Here is my Pastebinit with the details from the Boot-Repair. • How can I initialize file names in the folders/ subfolders?

  Sometimes Thunar allows 'camel-case' of file names, but only in the immediate folder, not the sub-folders. "Perl module to convert stringt to and from CamelCase" exists in Synaptic, but it is not powerful enough, or am I ignorant? The only way I can reliably do this is with Windows shareware (paid $$): Servant Salamander). That's why all my data & archives are on NTFS partitions. BTW: Synaptic has different entries for 'initialize' and 'initialise'. But I'll mention this in another question.

  I want to get an idea of the budget required to make something akin to the Rock Band 3 character creator. We won't have the same level of detail for creating the base character, i.e. no face feature customization. We essentially want some very basic body sizing and want a bunch of clothing and accessories that the characters can try on. The clothing and accessories need to adapt and fit to the body types/shapes. The character should also support movement...and the clothes should move with the body. I've asked a similar question here regarding the development effort but not necessarily a budget. Do you think it's a $1M job? Most of the effort will go into creating the character models and the clothing models. The rest of the effort will go towards the user interface to navigate the customization features.

I think this question has two parts: How do you know your hiring process is getting the right candidates to apply and go through the interview process? Of the people that you end up interviewing, how can you tell that the ones you choose to hire are better (on average) than those that you rejected?
