• PHP suddenly failed after IIS update

  All my application pools were stopped this morning after I got to work. I can restart them, but when I try to load the website the app pool crashes again. Update: I've looked in the GAC as the error below suggests and it seems that the file is not there. How do I get it back? Update 2: I found a further error in the event log saying The Module name FastCgiModule path C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\iisfcgi.dll returned an error from registration. The data is the error. So following the information from here http://forums.iis.net/t/1153937.aspx I removed CGI and my sites are working again. This has fixed the initial problem, but now I don't have FastCGI so I'm fairly sure that PHP will no longer be working (I don't have any PHP at the moment to test). • Installing WindowsAuthentication breaks authentication / web.config?

  I have a clean Windows 2008 R2 box (on a VM) and have installed IIS 7.5 with default options. I then copied a website to it (from Windows 7, IIS 7) and after a little tweaking the website is working fine. The website is currently using and working with Anonymous Authentication. I have gone back to the Windows Components/Sever Manager, Roles - Security and ticked and installed Windows Authentication. When I check my server in IIS (top level above sites) - Authentication, I see Anonymous Authentication (enabled) ASP.NET Impersonation (disabled) Forms Authentication (disbaled) Windows Authentication (enabled) When I check my default website - Authentication, I see as above but "Retrieving status" and an error dialog saying There was an error while performing this operation. Details: Filename c:\inetpub\wwwroot\screwturnwiki\web.config Line number: 96 Error: This configuration section cannot be used in this path. This happens when the section is being locked at the parent level. Locking is either by default (overriderModeDefault="Deny"), or set explicity by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="False". I have tried hand editing the web.config with no success. (How to use locking in IIS7 Configuration) UN-installing Windows Authentication happily returns my site to working with Anonymous Authentication, and allows me to enable/disable these three options. FYI. I am using ScrewTurnWiki with the Active Directory plug in. • Programmatically add an ISAPI extension dll in IIS 7 using ADSI?

  I apologize beforehand, this is a cross post of this SO question. I thought I'd ask it there first, but apparently it doesn't harvest any answers there. I hope it will get more attention here. When I have an answer somewhere, I'll delete the other one. I'm trying to programmatically add an ISAPI extension dll in IIS using ADSI. This has been working for ages on previous versions of IIS, but it seems to fail on IIS 7. I am using similar code like shown in this question: var web = GetObject("IIS://localhost/W3SVC/1/ROOT/specificVirtualDirectory"); var maps = web.ScriptMaps.toArray(); map[maps.length] = ".aaa,c:\\path\\to\\isapi\\extension.dll,1,GET,POST"; web.ScriptMaps = maps.asDictionary(); web.SetInfo(); After executing that code, I do see an "AboMapperCustom-12345678" entry for that specific dll in the "Handler mappings" of the specific virtual directory in which I added the script map. But when I try to use that extension in a browser, I always get HTTP Error 404.2 Not Found The page you are requesting cannot be served because of the ISAPI and CGI Restriction list settings on the Web server. Even after adding an entry to allow that specific dll in the "ISAPI and CGI restrictions", I keep getting that error. To make it actually work, I first have to undo these steps (encountering the same issue like the OP of the question mentioned above: after deleting the script map entry from the IIS manager GUI, I also have to programmatically delete it using ADSI before it's actually gone from the metabase). And then manually add an entry like this: inetmgr - webserver - website - virtual directory - handler mappings - add script map... path = *.dll, executable = <path to dll>, name = <doesn't matter, but it's mandatory> click "yes" on the question "do you want to allow this ISAPI extension?" When I compare the 2 entries, they are exactly the same, except for the "Entry Type" which seems to be "Inherited" for the programmatically added one and "Local" for the one added manually. The strange thing is, even though it says "Inherited", I don't see it anywhere in IIS on a higher level. Where is it inheriting from? In my code, I do add the script map to the specific virtual directory so it should be "Local" as well. Maybe there is the problem, but I don't know how to add a "Local" Script Map using ADSI. I really would like to keep using the ADSI method, as otherwise I will have to use different methods in our setup when working with IIS 7 or previous versions, and I would like to avoid that. To recap: How can I programmatically add a script map entry and its companion CGI and ISAPI restrictions entry to IIS 7 using ADSI? Anybody who can shed some light on this? Any help appreciated.

• Replace dual-XP installs with single-XP install and repartition drive?

  Hello, The Current Situation I have a hard drive that currently is split up like so: Primary Partition C: 9.77 GB NTFS Healthy (System) with XP Pro (in Polish) installed Extended Partition D: 39.82 GB NTFS Healthy (Boot) with XP Pro (in English) installed 6.30 GB Free space When I start my comuter I get a black and white Windows Boot Manager dual boot screen with 2 choices both being Microsoft Windows XP. The first choice is the English version of XP and the second choice is the Polish version of XP. Images of my Computer Management window and Dual Boot screen The Mission What I need to do is get rid of the entire extended partition (D: 39.82 GB & 6.30 free space) and just have the one primary C: drive which I assume will be somewheres around 55 GB big. So in the end I just want XP Pro in English running on my C: drive and no black and white boot screen to show up when starting up my laptop. The Question How do I go about successfully completing The Mission with out making my computer a useless pile of silicon, plastic and metal? UPDATE: So I went ahead and tried to follow Neal's suggestion but hit a wall. I got to a Windows XP Pro install screen that had the 3 following options as well as my drive data: To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press Enter To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C To delete the selected partition, press D 57232 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR] C: Partition1 [NTFS] 10001 MB ( 4642 MB free ) Unpartitioned space 6448 MB D: Partition2 [NTFS] 40774 MB ( 26225 MB free ) Unpartitioned space 8 MB I figured I would go with the first choice ((To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press Enter)) because I just wanted to set up Windows XP on C: Partition1 (which was preselected) so I pressed Enter which brought me to a screen displaying this message: You chose to install Windows XP on a partition that contains another operating system. Installing Windows XP on this partition might cause the other operating system to function improperly. CAUTION: Installing multiple operating systems on a single partition is not recommended. So this leads me to 2 new questions: How do I get rid of the Windows XP (Polish language) install on C: Partition 1 so that I can cleanly and safely install Windows XP (English language) on it? Neal, is this what you meant by me possibly having to delete the partition that the Windows XP (Polish language) install was located on? Since I have the option to delete partitions with the 3rd choice ((To delete the selected partition, press D)), should I do that on this screen or wait until I have Windows XP (English language) safely installed on C: Partition 1? I have to ask these questions because I have read that it is possibly dangerous to delete hard drive partitions. Just being cautious.

• Watchguard Firewall - Issues with SSLVPN

  I have a client who has a WatchGuard XTM 23 device on site as their primary firewall. I just upgraded its firmware a couple days ago to the latest version for that series, 11.6.6. The problem is that I haven't successfully been able to setup a VPN connection for them. Using the instructions at http://www.watchguard.com/help/docs/webui/11_XTM/en-US/index.html#en-US/mvpn/ssl/configure_fb_for_mvpn_ssl_c.html, I'm trying to setup a VPN with SSL connection: From the firewall web GUI / Dashboard, I go to VPN - Mobile VPN with SSL, I enable it, add the organization's public IP address to which the firewall is connected. I've setup a group in Active Directory named "SSLVPN-Users", verified that the WatchGuard box can talk to the Active Directory Server, and added myself to that group. I then downloaded the WatchGuard Mobile VPN with SSL client onto my own Windows 7 machine, walked to the client's 2nd building across the street (which has a different public internet connection), and tried to connect to the VPN. When I do try to connect with the client, I get the following errors: 2013-06-24T15:41:32.119 Launching WatchGuard Mobile VPN with SSL client. Version 11.6.0 (Build 343814) Built:Jun 13 2012 01:42:55 2013-06-24T15:41:37.595 Requesting client configuration from 184.174.143.176:443 2013-06-24T15:41:50.106 FAILED:Cannot perform http request, timeout 12002 2013-06-24T15:41:50.106 failed to get domain name I discovered today the Firebox System Manager, and its "Traffic Monitor" which gives current log information (refreshes every 5 seconds). Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the client has setup any sort of WatchGuard / Firebox logging server, so actually recording server-side logs to file hasn't been done. I can work on implementing that if I need to. I noticed that if I try to ping the client's public IP address from an outside source, I don't get a response back (unless I added a policy into the firewall to allow ICMP traffic from "External", which I successfully did a few seconds ago for testing purposes - that rule has since been reverted to not respond to external ping requests). There's a policy in the firewall for allowing SSLVPN Traffic authentication requests coming from any external source TO the Firebox, and then to do the authentication / actually allow the VPN traffic, there's a policy allowing traffic for anyone in the SSLVPN-Users group to flow between that user and the inside network. So my questions are: Has anyone seen these errors before from the Watchguard VPN Client, and/or do you have any suggestions on how I can resolve that error? If I need to setup logging server to grab the firewall logs (in order to further troubleshoot this issue), how complicated a task is that and does it require a lot of system resources? The organization I'm consulting with only has 1 server and not a lot of resources or technical know-how.

• Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server does not give out all available licenses

  I installed the Terminal Server role in Windows Server 2003 Standard 64-bits. Still, only 2 connections are allowed. The License Manager says that there are 10 Device CALs available, which is correct, and that none are given out. For good measure I let the server reboot, to no effect. Before this, there was another server (same Windows, except that it is 32 bits) active as a licensing server. I removed the role first and then then added it to the new server. I then removed the Terminal Server Licensing Server component off the old one and added it to the new one. After that, I added to licenses. When that didn't give the required result, I rebooted to new server. Still, the new server, with licenses and all, acts as if it has the 2 license RDP. The server are all stand-alone, there is no active directory been set up. Both servers are in different workgroups. Update (4/12/10): The server has changed the entries in the Terminal Server Licensing a few times. After installing the licenses it added an entry of which the exact phrasing I forgot but it was about temporary Windows 2003 device licenses. Later it added Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL. The temporary held 2 licenses (standard RDP licenses, I think) and the other 10. At some point, seemingly unrelated from the testing we did, it used a licenses from the new pool. This morning, 2 licenses were used from the pool of 10 and only 1 from the temporary/RDP pool (I wish I had screenshots to show, it changed every few hours oir so it seems). Although I had already activated the server over the internet, and re-activated it, I decided to go through the whole procedure by phone. Long story short, here is what it says now: Existing Windows 2000 Server, type:built-in [no licenses used, I add for for sake of being complete] Windows Server 2003 - Terminal Server Per Device CAL Token, type:open [none of 10 used] Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL, type:open [3 of 10 used] As I tried to explain, this is the end result after a few changes, most of which I can't directly connect to any action from my part. Only going to the activation procedure by phone seemed to directly effect the TS, resulting in the above configuration. Still, it is impossible to connect with more than 3 people, which is 1 up from the 2 that could connect yesterday. TS does say 7 licenses are avaible. Yet it won't give them out.

• Internet Explorer keeps asking for NTLM credentials in Intranet zone

  Long text, sorry for that. I'm trying to be as specific as possible. I'm on Windows 7 and I experience a very frustrating Internet Explorer 8 behavior. I'm in a company LAN with some intranet servers and a proxy for connecting with the outside world. On sites that are clearly recognized as being "Local Intranet" (as indicated in the IE status bar) I keep getting "Windows Security" dialog boxes that ask me to log in. These pages are served off an IIS6 with "Integrated Windows Security" enabled, NTFS permits Everyone:Read on the files themselves. If I enter my Windows credentials, the page loads fine. However, the dialog boxes will be popping up the next time, regardless if I ticked "Remember my credentials" or not. (Credentials are stored in the "Credential Manager" but that does not make any difference as to how often these login boxes appear.) If I click "Cancel", one of two things can happen: Either the page loads with certain resources missing (images, styleheets, etc), or it does not load at all and I get HTTP 401.2 (Unauthorized: Logon Failed Due to Server Configuration). This depends on whether the logon box was triggered by the page itself, or a referenced resource. The behavior appears to be completely erratic, sometimes the pages load smoothly, sometimes one resource triggers a logon message, sometimes it does not. Even simply re-loading the page can result in changed behavior. I'm using WPAD as my proxy detection mechanism. All Intranet hosts do bypass the proxy in the PAC file. I've checked every IE setting I can think of, entered host patterns, individual host names, IP ranges in every thinkable configuration to the "Local Intranet" zone, ticked "Include all sites that bypass the proxy server", you name it. It boils down to "sometimes it just does not work", and slowly I'm losing my mind. ;-) I'm aware that this is related to IE not automatically passing my NTLM credentials to the webserver but asking me instead. Usually this should only happen for NTLM-secured sites that are not recognized as being in the "Intranet" zone. As explained, this is not the case here. Especially since half of a page can load perfectly and without interruption and some page's resources (coming from the same server!) trigger the login message. I've looked at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303650, which gives the impression of describing the problem, but nothing there seems to work. And frankly, I'm not certain if "manually editing the registry" is the right solution for this kind of problem. I'm not the only person in the world with an IE/intranet/IIS configuration, after all. I'm at a loss, can somebody give me a hint?

• Linux Mint 10 LXDE computer to act as LTSP Server without luck

  So I've tried to make our screen-broken HP laptop to also serve as LTSP Server in addition to various other tasks, without luck, which may be cuz I'm running LM10 LXDE while the instructions are for Ubuntu. • How to debug Ubuntu/Cisco VPN issues

  I'm trying to connect an Ubuntu laptop (9.10) with some kind of Cisco VPN device; I don't know what's on the other end, and I'm not likely to find out exactly what. I know my company allows VPN from Linux clients because they provide one that I cannot get to install (it fails to compile). I've had the most luck with the network-manager-vpnc package, however I can't figure out what's failing. • Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server does not give out all available licenses (solved)

  I installed the Terminal Server role in Windows Server 2003 Standard 64-bits. Still, only 2 connections are allowed. The License Manager says that there are 10 Device CALs available, which is correct, and that none are given out. For good measure I let the server reboot, to no effect. Before this, there was another server (same Windows, except that it is 32 bits) active as a licensing server. I removed the role first and then then added it to the new server. I then removed the Terminal Server Licensing Server component off the old one and added it to the new one. After that, I added to licenses. When that didn't give the required result, I rebooted to new server. Still, the new server, with licenses and all, acts as if it has the 2 license RDP. The server are all stand-alone, there is no active directory been set up. Both servers are in different workgroups. Update (4/12/10): The server has changed the entries in the Terminal Server Licensing a few times. After installing the licenses it added an entry of which the exact phrasing I forgot but it was about temporary Windows 2003 device licenses. Later it added Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL. The temporary held 2 licenses (standard RDP licenses, I think) and the other 10. At some point, seemingly unrelated from the testing we did, it used a licenses from the new pool. This morning, 2 licenses were used from the pool of 10 and only 1 from the temporary/RDP pool (I wish I had screenshots to show, it changed every few hours oir so it seems). Although I had already activated the server over the internet, and re-activated it, I decided to go through the whole procedure by phone. Update 2 (4/12/10) The problem has been solved. It seems the activation over the web, while it said to have succeeded, did not work correctly. After activating by phone, it did work. What was different from the old setup and what put me on the wrong foot from that moment, was that I now need to create seperate user account because a session with one user account will be taken over by someone else when that account is used by that person. On the previous server, it was possible to open several sesions with the same account. We now use Per Device licenses, I'm not sure what was used before. Thanks all for the replies.

• Windows XP SP3 - Library not registered error... IE8 not installing.

  Specs to put things in context: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 1987 MHz / 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM / WD 160GB IDE HDD / 3DFuzion 128MB GeForce 6200 AGP 4x / FIC AM37 / Windows XP SP3 Just recently, I was unable to start Windows Media Player. I clicked it and the busy cursor came up, but then nothing happened. Also, I tried doing a search for a file, and same thing. It would show busy cursor then suddenly stop doing anything. I couldn't find it in the Processes of the Task Manager. (Perhaps I don't know what I'm looking for?) Also, I was trying to update my DirectX, which has been running something older than DX9 9.0c for a while now, except the installation fails due to "internal error". I think the failed DirectX installation has been like that for a while... (I remember trying to install DX9 9.0c a while back, but still failed.) The Windows programs not starting, I don't think I've ever had before... what could be the cause of these problems?! Thanks in advance. =) EDIT1: Weird thing now is that when I try to open User Accounts, I get a message saying "Wrong number of arguments or invalid property assignment." Also, when I'm trying to open services.msc, I'm getting a script error that says that "Library not registered." (Code: 0, URL: res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\mmcndmgr.dll/views.htm) Perhaps this is related to my other question, where I seemed to have an unregistered library of some sort. EDIT2: The DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer freakishly worked and updated successfully. Now, I have focussed the question on the bigger problem. For WMP11, H&S, and Search, I click it once, get a busy icon for a second, and then nothing happens. Refer to EDIT1 for other problems. EDIT3: Seems that my problems may be related to some Internet Explorer Script Errors. So what I did was download the IE8 installer from the Microsoft website, but when I run it and get to the main portion of the installer, it just keeps looping on the Downloading step of the installation. The installer is still running, but I left it for at least 4 hours and the downloading step was still not finished. What is the problem? Also, I uninstalled Ubuntu 9.10 after these problems, but they still remain. EDIT4: I'm getting an active desktop recovery background on startup now. And within seconds my computer hangs again. EDIT3 explains main issue though.

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 Virtual Server. I removed the "Default Web Site" using IIS Manager and now all my other sites now report an error saying they can't access the site (or something similar). I thought I could just remove the role, re-install IIS again and start with a clean slate. • Windows 7 extremely slow login, exchange performance, printer enumeration, etc...

  Background: I have a fresh copy of Windows 7 Professional x64 on a Dell Latitude E6500. The laptop has 8GB RAM, 250GB drive, and all Intel peripherals (net/wifi/graphics). All available Windows updates, as well as hardware drivers are installed. The IT folks where I work joined the computer to our Windows 2003-based Active Directory domain. There are no errors in any logs that we've looked at, and Group Policy templates appear to have applied properly. Problem: Every time I turn on or reboot the computer, it takes between 2 to 10 (all times are actual) minutes after successfully typing my username/password to get to my desktop. My login script does not always run. Sometimes I get a black screen, and a couple of minutes later the login script will pop up and take up to 10 minutes to complete. I can get around this by hitting cntrl-shift-esc and running explorer.exe from the Task Manager. The login script continues to hang, but I can minimize it and go on about my business. Either way, it generally throws errors prior to completing. I often get slow or failed connectivity to Exchange via Outlook. When I bring up printer dialogs, they take several minutes to populate, and block the calling app while doing so. Copies to SMB shares are very slow. On my home network, everything works fine. On both the work network and home network, I can use remote internet resources just fine. Web pages pull up, remote VPN's are fine, I can max out bandwidth on SpeakEasy Speed Test. I can get almost max bandwidth transferring FTP/HTTP over a LAN. Another symptom of the problem is that when I first log in, the work network shows as "Identifying" for a long time in the Network and Sharing Center, and will often then change to the name of the work domain, but say "Unauthenticated Network". Note that this computer previously ran Windows Vista with none of these problems. Attempts to Fix: Installed the Win7 admin pack Uninstalled/reinstalled all hardware drivers Verified Active Directory DNS settings (Vista works relatively well on the same network) Reset all TCP/IP settings on all adapters using the netsh commands to do so Disabled ipv6 on all adapters Disable wifi adapter while on work network Locked the network card to 100/Full, 1000/Full; also tried Auto Added various important addresses to hosts file (exchange, dns, ad) -- removed when didn't help My background is a jpeg (sounds unrelated but there is apparently a win7 login bug related to solid color background) More I have forgotten The IT staff at my company indicated they believe this is due to having Windows 2003 AD servers and not having any Windows 2008 R2 AD servers. Other than that, they have no advice or assistance to offer other than a rebuild (already tried that once with similar symptoms), or downgrade to Vista. Any thoughts out there?

• Red Hat Yum not working out of the box?

  I have a server runnning Red Hat Enterprise Linux v5.6 in the cloud. My project constraints do not allow me to use another OS. When I created the cloud server, I was able to SSH into it and access the shell. I next ran the command: sudo yum update But the command failed. About a month ago I created another server with the same machine image and didn't have that error. Why is it failing now?   I'm trying to setup a vSphere Client vCenter v5.0.0 Build 455964 Template Customization Specification using a Windows Sysprep unattended answer XML file for Win2008R2. However I didn't know how Sysprep worked before attempting this so it was a time-consuming nightmare (even after reviewing VMware vSphere ESXi 5's documentation)! I think I've figure out what I'm supposed to be doing, but it's still not working. The biggest problem at this point is that vSphere Client vCenter Customization Specification IP address information is not sticking when I load a Sysprep XML file with just 1 basic setting! This can only be a bug. Here is the process I'm using: PROCESS for Windows - vSphere Client Install Windows OS install VM Tools customize Windows (GPOs can be used to do this after deployment) install Applications (GPOs can be used to do this after deployment too) shutdown the VM convert the VM to a template create a custom Windows Sysprep XML answer file with desired customizations View Management Customization Specifications Manager create "New" Specification for "Target Virtual Machine OS" select Windows check "Use Custom Sysprep Answer File" (ADDS: Custom Sysprep File. KEEPS: Network (IP), Operating System Options (SID, Sysprep /generalize).   Hello. I've been trying to set up the OpenLDAP installed by default on Fedora 12, very unsuccessfully. My ultimate goal is to use LDAP authentication for user login and Apache, using the OpenLDAP server running on the same machine. I found two ldap.conf files, one in /etc and one in /etc/openldap. I don't know which is the right one. If I understood correctly, this file is to configure the client. I put this in both: HOST localhost BASE dc=sniejana-sandbox,dc=com I then ran the server with: service slapd start It said OK. Most of the tutorials above say to use the command ldapsearch -D "cn=Manager,dc=my-domain,dc=com" -W to ensure that everything's working. When I execute this command, a password prompt appears, and after entering the password, I get the error. ldapsearch -D "cn=root,dc=sniejana-sandbox,dc=com" -W Enter LDAP password: ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49) The same thing happens when trying to use ldapadd. I tried with an encrypted and unencrypted password in slapd.conf, it doesn't change anything. Adding a -x for simple authentication doesn't change anything either. netstat -ap confirms the server is listening: tcp 0 0 *:ldap *:* LISTEN 4148/slapd tcp 0 0 *:ldap *:* LISTEN 4148/slapd ps -ef|grep slapd confirms the process is running: ldap 4148 1 0 15:22 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/slapd -h ldap:/// -u ldap Running slaptest procudes config file testing succeeded. I read somewhere that the command ldapsearch -x -b '' -s base '(objectclass=*)' namingContext can confirm the server is running. • networking through openstack installed on vm

  I am trying to set up a test installation of Openstack on a Ubuntu 12.04 VM running on a ESXi server. So far I have been able to launch the VMs on the ESXi, however am unable to assign IP addresses to them. As the VM with the Openstack installation has a single public IP, I wish to assign IPs to the VMs create through Openstack so that they can directly interact with the public network itself without having a separate private network. So I feel that bridging would not be the correct option here. But am unable to find the correct documents to go ahead with such an install. • Problem Disabling Roaming Profiles on Grouped Users

  I'm having some serious issues getting a group of users to stop using roaming profiles. As expected, I have roaming profiles enabled accross the domain. - But am doing GPO filtering, limiting the scope. I originally had it set to authenticated users for Roaming, but as the domain has branched out to multiple locations, I've limited the scope to only people that are near the central office. The GPO that I have linked filtered to a group I have created that include users that I don't want to have roaming profiles. This GPO is sitting at the root of the domain, with the "Forced" setting enabled, so it should override any setting below it. *On a side note, it is the ONLY GPO that I have set to "Forced" right now. I know the GPO is working, since I can see the original registy settings on a user that logged in under roaming profiles - and then that same user logging in after I made the Group Policy changes, the registry reflects a local profile. But unfortunately, even after making those settings - the user is given a roaming profile on one of the servers. A gpresult of that same user account (after the updated gpo) is listed in the code block below. You can see right at the top of that output, that it is infact dealing with a roaming profile. - And sure enough, on the server that's hosting the file share for roaming profiles, it creates a folder for the user once they log in. For testing purposes, I've deleted all copies of the user's profile, roaming and local. But the problem is still here. - So I'm aparently missing something in the group policy settings on a wider scale. • passwd ldap request to ActiveDirectory fails on half of 2500 users

  We just setup ActiveDirectory in my company and imported all linux users and groups. On the linux client: (configured to ask ldap in nsswitch.conf): If i do a common ldapsearch to the AD ldap server i get the complete number of about 2580 users. But if i do this it only gets a part of all users, 1221 in number: getent passwd | wc -l Running it with strace shows kind of attempt to reconnect My ideas were: Does the linux authentication procedure run ldapsearch with a parameter incompatible to AD ldap ? Or probably it is a encoding issue. The windows user are entered in AD with all kind of characters. Maybe someone could shed light on this and give a hint how to debug that further!? • High CPU from httpd process

  I am currently getting high CPU on a server that is just running a couple of sites with very low traffic. One of the sites is in still development going live soon. However, this site is very very slow...When browsing through its pages I can see that the CPU goes from 30% to 100% for httpd (see top output below). I have tuned httpd & MySQL, Apache Solr, Tomcat for high performance, and I am using APC. • Why is Excel 2010/2013 taking 10 seconds open any file?

  I have a fast Windows 7 PC with two SSDs and 16GB of RAM, so I'm used to programs loading very fast. But recently, for no reason I can figure out, Excel has started taking way too long to open Excel files (of any size--even blank files). This is occurring with Excel 2010 and with Excel 2013 after I upgraded, hoping to solve the problem. Here a couple scenarios: If I start Excel directly, it opens almost instantly. No problem there. If I start Excel directly, and then open any Excel file (.xls or .xlsx), it loads almost instantly. Still no problem BUT if I attempt to open any Excel file directly, with Excel not running, it consistently takes 10-11 seconds for Excel to start. I get no error messages, just a spinning cursor for 10-11 seconds, and then the file opens. During the delay while Excel is trying to start, I'm not really seeing any discernible spike in CPU or memory usage, other than explorer.exe. This problem is only occurring with Excel, not Word or any other program I'm aware of. I've searched around quite a bit on this question and found various others who have experienced it, but the solutions that worked for them are not working for me. For a few people it was a problem with scanning network drives, but my problem is purely with local files; I have no network drives, and the problem persists even with all network connections disabled. Some people suggested worksheets with corrupted formulas or links, but I'm experiencing this with ANY Excel file: even blank worksheets. Others thought it was a problem with add-ins, but I have all Excel add-ins disabled (as far as I can tell). One person solved it by disabling a "clipboard manager" process that was running in the background, but I don't have that. I've disabled as many startup and background processes as I can, but the problem persists. I've run malware scans, disk cleanup, CCleaner, and installed Excel 2013. I've deleted temporary files, enabled SuperFetch, and edited registry keys. Still can't get rid of the problem. Any ideas? My system details: Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit, Excel 2013 32-bit, 16GB RAM, all programs installed on SSD.

• Windows explorer locks files

  I'm using Office 2010 & Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. My problem starts when I attempt to save e-mail messages to my PC that I have received via Outlook (my ISP is Comcast). I'm using the default .msg file extension option when I attempt to save these e-mails. The resultant files are locked and do not show the normal "envelope" icon. Instead, it’s a “blank page” icon with the right upper corner folded in. These files refuse to open either by double clicking on them or right clicking and trying to open them with Outlook. And when I return to Outlook, I discover that Outlook is now hung up and I have to close it via the Task Manager. To make matters worse, I’ve also discovered that every e-mail message that I've saved on my PC over the years has also somehow become locked and their original "envelope" icon has been replaced with the "blank page" icon. I found and installed an application called LockHunter. As a result, when I right click on a saved and locked e-mail message, I’ve given an option to find out what's locking it. Each time I'm told that the culprit is Windows explorer.exe. When I unlock the file the normal envelope icon is sometimes displayed (but not always) but at least the file can then be opened. But the file is still “squirrely” as it can’t be moved or saved to a folder until it’s unlocked again. On this second attempt, LockHunter says it’s now locked by Outlook.exe. By the way, I don't have this issue when I save Word, Excel & PowerPoint files; only with Outlook. I've exhausted every remedy that I can think of including: making sure that the file and folder options are checked to always show icons and not thumbnails; running the Windows 7 & Office 2010 repair options which find nothing amiss; running a complete system scan with Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool with negative results; verifying that Outlook is the default for opening e-mails; updating all of my applications via Secunia Personal Software Inspector; uninstalling every application that I felt was unnecessary; doing a registry cleanup via CC Cleaner; having Windows Security Essentials always on (it did find one Java Trojan recently which was quarantined and then deleted); uninstalling a bunch of non-Microsoft shell extensions; and deactivating all of the Outlook Add-ins and then re-activating each one. None of this solves the problem. I’d welcome any advice on how to resolve this.
