• Simple VIN API for decoding Vehicle Identification Numbers

  Ever see a nifty tool that solves a problem for a particular domain that you may never encounter but wish you had a reason to use it? I did that recently with this VIN API by the people at the PullMonkey blog.  It will easily decode a VIN, returning the make, model, year, and other useful information about the vehicle.  It was developed for Mr Quotey, a new free online insurance service.   The XNA community has been crazy busy again. It always make me fee like such a slacker collecting all of these notes as I see the tremendous output from people all over the world and it’s incredible and humbling. There are some amazingly skilled people working with XNA. On another not, I’m going to take a minute to get on my soapbox and say, if you are developing ANYTHING and are not using some sort of source/revision control, START IMMEDIATELY. This applies to teams of one. Projects for fun. And “I back up my hard drive” or “I use dropbox!” does NOT count as using source control. You’ll be doing yourself a HUGE favor if you find one, learn to use it and integrate it into your everyday workflow. I personally use Subversion. It’s hosted offsite at xp.dev.com and I use TortoiseSVN as my front end to interface with the repository. It’s simple and easy to use and has saved me from myself so many time. Honestly, get setup with some type of source control immediately. If you don’t understand how, grab another developer that does and have them walk you through setup and the basics of using it. Ok, I’m done. • linux nooB: Installing ffmpeg + dependencies on aws linux ami (repo issues)

  Im installing ffmpeg to run on an amazon linux ami, and have added the rpmforge repo and the dag repo. Here are some guidelines I'm using for reference: TWoZaO and Razuna The rpmforge repo has ffmpeg, but if you try to install it then it will complain that is missing dependencies (for me libSDL-1.2.so.0()(64bit)). Regardless I will install ffmpeg from svn so I can be sure to enable the options I want (namely libx264). It seems strange to me though that SDL is not in rpmforge or dag, and in according to both of my references above, it should be there. • Syntax Recognition for XML-Based Languages in Oracle JDeveloper

    @Thanks Jeffrey Stephenson If you are looking at using any one of the new XML Based languages, lets say a docbook xml, or xproc, or what not, you can make use of JDeveloper's syntax highlighting and completion insight feature to ease out those extra keystrokes. All you need is a URL/local copy of the XML Schema for the language. Once you have, you can register it via Tools --> Preferences --> XML Schemas.   Remember to provide a new extension name [Using a default .xml extension did not work for me.] I provided my own extension .dbk for my docbook files. Once you save these settings, you can create new files that conform to the schema, and you get validation/completion insight/prompting for free.

• High CPU usage with Team Speak 3.0.0-rc2

  The CPU usage is always around 40 percent. I use push-to-talk and I had uninstalled pulseaudio. Now I use Alsa. I don't even have to connect to a Server. By simply starting TS the cpu usage goes up 40 percent and stays there. The CPU usage of 3.0.0-rc1 [Build: 14468] is constantly 14 percent. UPDATE: Thanks to nickguletskii's link I googled for "alsa cpu usage" (without quotes) and it brought me to a forum. A user wrote that by directly selecting the hardware with "plughw:x.x" won't impact the performance of the system. I have selected it in the TS 3 configuration and it worked. But this solution is not optimal because now no other program can access the sound output. If you need any further information or my question is unclear than please tell me.

• Syncing Music Everywhere with Google Music and iTunes Match - Will This Work?

  I have the following devices: Personal Laptop running Windows 7/Ubuntu 11.10 (mostly use Ubuntu) Media Server running Windows 7 with PS3 Media Server and iTunes Work Laptop running OSX Snow Leopard iPad iPhone 4S The iPhone just replaced my Droid 2 Global. What I had been doing was using Google Music to watch the folders iTunes was storing music in and moving any new files up to Google Music. The Droid would pull music down from the cloud via streaming or me telling it to make it available offline, I had folders set up with PS3 Media Server to stream them to TV's via DLNA, and used RDP to play music through my speakers in the office. So far it's worked well. Since I've replaced the Droid 2 though with an iPhone, I've lost the syncing ability with Google Music and have to do it via iTunes (I knew this would happen, no big suprise). I got to thinking though - Apple does offer iTunes Match, which allows your devices to stream/download the music from 'the cloud,' much like Google Music. I could then listen to whatever I Wanted (for the most part) on my phone, iPad, and laptops by syncing via iTunes Match. I don't want to loose my MP3s though, and since I've never used iTunes Match, I wonder if the following is a viable solution: Sign up for iTunes Match on my media server Let it scan my library and make available my songs in AAC in the cloud Not delete the media server MP3s Set up other devices to sync to iTunes Match Continue to get MP3s via Amazon or other services and add to iTunes Let the MP3s sync to Google Music, and let the MP3's add to the AAC versions on my devices I think the main kicker is I don't want to lose the MP3 versions of my songs as those will work just fine on all my devices and I generally rip at 320kbps. I don't mind spending $25/year if it means that I can easily shift the music from device to device without much thinking, but I'm not going to pay $25/year to end up converting my library over to AAC just to save myself the hassle of manually syncing my iPad and iPhone.

• ArcSig Meeting at 04/20/2010 with Sam Abraham

  Sam Abraham gave a great presentation, “MVC2 – Do it your way in VS 2010”, at our monthly ArcSig meeting on 04/20/2010 at Global Response. The interest in Sam’s talk was immense, we almost run out of seats. The audience got an in-depth view and walkthrough of the Model View Controller functionality in Visual Studio 2010 with detailed code examples. Sam answered many user questions about practical applications in MVC. Free soft drinks and pizza kept the participants energized during the whole presentation and a raffle of books and software completed this meeting, with a preview about the upcoming meetings and events in May and June. • Edit Media Center TV Recordings with Windows Live Movie Maker

  Have you ever wanted to take a TV program you’ve recorded in Media Center and remove the commercials or save clips of favorite scenes? Today we’ll take a look at editing WTV and DVR-MS files with Windows Live Movie Maker. Download and Install Windows Live Movie Maker. The download link can be found at the end of the article. WLMM is part of Windows Live Essentials, but you can choose to install only the applications you want. You’ll also want to be sure to uncheck any unwanted settings like settings Bing as default search provider or MSN as your browser home page.   Add your recorded TV file to WLMM by clicking the Add videos and photos button, or by dragging and dropping it onto the storyboard.   You’ll see your video displayed in the Preview window on the left and on the storyboard. Adjust the Zoom Time Scale slider at the lower right to change the level of detail displayed on the storyboard. You may want to start zoomed out and zoom in for more detailed edits.   Removing Commercials or Unwanted Sections Note: Changes and edits made in Windows Live Movie Maker do not change or effect the original video file. To accomplish this, we will makes cuts, or “splits,” and the beginning and end of the section we want to remove, and then we will delete that section from our project. Click and drag the slider bar along the the storyboard to scroll through the video. When you get to the end of a row in on the storyboard, drag the slider down to the beginning of the next row. We’ve found it easiest and most accurate to get close to the end of the commercial break and then use the Play button and the Previous Frame and Next Frame buttons underneath the Preview window to fine tune your cut point. When you find the right place to make your first cut, click the split button on the Edit tab on the ribbon. You will see your video “split” into two sections. Now, repeat the process of scrolling through the storyboard to find the end of the section you wish to cut. When you are at the proper point, click the Split button again.   Now we’ll delete that section by selecting it and pressing the Delete key, selecting remove on the Home tab, or by right clicking on the section and selecting Remove.   Trim Tool This tool allows you to select a portion of the video to keep while trimming away the rest.   Click and drag the sliders in the preview windows to select the area you want to keep. The area outside the sliders will be trimmed away. The area inside is the section that is kept in the movie. You can also adjust the Start and End points manually on the ribbon.   Delete any additional clips you don’t want in the final output. You can also accomplish this by using the Set start point and Set end point buttons. Clicking Set start point will eliminate everything before the start point. Set end point will eliminate everything after the end point. And you’re left with only the clip you want to keep.   Output your Video Select the icon at the top left, then select Save movie. All of these settings will output your movie as a WMV file, but file size and quality will vary by setting. The Burn to DVD option also outputs a WMV file, but then opens Windows DVD Maker and prompts you to create and burn a DVD.   Conclusion WLMM is one of the few applications that can edit WTV files, and it’s the only one we’re aware of that’s free. We should note only WTV and DVR-MS files will appear in the Recorded TV library in Media Center, so if you want to view your WMV output file in WMC you’ll need to add it to the Video or Movie library.
