  • Enabling media streaming from a removable drive using Windows Media Player

    I have Windows Media Player set up to stream video to several devices in my apartment. I had recently run out of space so I purchased an external drive to store my videos/music etc. I can add the media to my WMP library and play it locally without issue. As soon as I try to access the media from another device that supports media streaming (Media player or another PC) only the media stored on a fixed drive is available. Is there a way to enable media sharing from a removable drive or somehow trick WMP that the media is stored on a fixed drive? I tried setting up a SymLink linking a directory on the fixed drive to the removable one but with the same result.

    I'm looking at purchasing a Xbox360 because I've wanted to catch up with the Halo trilogy. Does the cheap Arcade edition console support Halo 2 Halo 3? Halo Wars? Would I be able to save my game progress in single player? Would I be able to play online in typical maps? General questions: Would I be able to play games using the DVD drive or do I have to download everything? Does the tiny HDD hurt even if I don't download any games, trailers or music? Are there any other differences in comparison to the Xbox360 Pro? I have a regular TV that uses the composite cable, so I don't need the HDTV support in the Pro edition.

  • How to fix Firefox Blue Screen of Death?

    I am running Windows XP SP3 and Firefox v3.6.2 and have an issue with Firefox causing the Blue Screen of Death. If I run in Windows safe mode, it does not occur, but running normally, it seems my firefox profile is going bad and results in certain web pages causing the BSOD. For example, presently, if I visit ebay.com, it gets BSOD. Before it was happening on google.com, but IT removed my Firefox profile and that seemed to fix the Google failure. However, now it has started occurring on ebay. I turned off all extensions and it still occurs. I'd like to fix my system so this does not occur. The IT folks don't seem to be able to solve this, so I am trying to fix it on my own. The BSOD is about something like (from memory) IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL. Why would safe mode avoid the issue and what does that tell us about the probable cause? I don't want to have to keep deleting my profile, so I'd like to find out the cause of the corruption.

    Is there a definitive answer for how to stop intermittent "skips" or pauses while playing music from iTunes to an airport express connected to my home stereo? When I read other forums I see a wealth of posts that say "I did XYZ and it's fixed" followed by "I tried XYZ and it didn't work." This does not appear to be signal strength related. The green light on the Airport Express does not turn to yellow/orange. Other wireless devices have no trouble connecting at the same or greater distances from the wireless router.

    I’m not able to find any text strings starting not from the beginning of word in filename or in file content using Windows 7 search. My Windows 7 search configuration: Let’s say I’m searching for a documents containing word “content”. I’m able to find those documents when searching for “content”, “conte”, “con” (as long as the string includes the beginning of the word). "content" "con" But if I search for “ontent”, “tent” or any other combination that doesn’t include the beginning of the word, Windows search won't find it. I've tried other indexing/searching software such as Copernic Desktop search, Google desktop search. Those programs also weren’t able to find part of the word starting from the middle of the word. For instance, it finds “conte”, but doesn’t find “onte”. Finds “conte” Doesn’t find “onte” I got the same problem using Copernic desktop search. On the other hand, when I use non-indexing content search software such as Agent Ransack or FileSeek, I get the same results when searching for “conte” or “onte”: “conte” “onte” Why do all pre-indexing content search applications (Windows search, Google desktop, Copernic desktop search) fail to search for a string inside the words? Why do non-indexing applications find text strings wherever they are: in the beginning, middle or end of the word? I’ve tried wildcards and other constructions with no luck. *onte onte “onte” content:onte content:onte content:~onte All these searched doesn’t find the word “content”. How can I make Windows search find strings from any part of words? Could you try these searches and see if they work for you? Or is this normal behavior? Thank you.   • Sound quality in bluetooth headphones doesn't change to high

    My Bluetooth headset Philips SHB6610 has several profiles. It can work as low-quality headset (HFP) and high-quality headphones (A2DP). I mean sound quality. Typically whenever I start to play the music in my media player it works in high quality, while if I receive a call on Skype it switches to low-quality. Once call is finished it falls back on high quality again. However, from time to time, it happens that I connect headphones to the computer and they just stay in low-quality mode. I don't know how can I change the profile manually, since it was always done automatically so far. The only thing that helps (but not always) is re-pairing of headphones with PC. I am using Windows 7 on Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-1CG laptop, with Belkin Mini Bluetooth Adapter.

    I am trying to set up my web server so that I can server multiple Ghost.org blogs. I am stuck in one crucial step. To be honest, my knowledge in servers is not so big, so I request your help to do this. Services Configure Website Edit Directives The problem is, the previous page (Services Configure website) says I can't edit the port: This Apache virtual host belongs to the Virtualmin server linguist.andyibanez.com, so the address, port, base directory and hostname cannot be changed here. And whenever I try to add the ProxyRequests off (the other two can be added fine) directive in Edit Directives manually, I'm simply told that the directive can't be there. So what is the right way to "add" the last three directives in the VirtualHost above to my sub server? Maybe I'm missing a menu item that will help me with this? I request your help as I have looked for a while, Google keeps thinking I want to serve Webmin via Apache when I google "Set up Virtualmin proxypass", and I have no clue what to do.

  • Apache Reverse Proxy not working inside a VirtualHost running a Mono Web Application

    I have a mono web application running with this virtual host below. It is running on Apache 2.2.20 / Ubuntu 11.10. I tried to add a reverse proxy inside this virtualhost so I can make asynchronous or AJAX type calls back to this same domain. My asynchronous requests would have problems in many browsers calling services that are on another domain (cross domain requests problem). I am wanting to do reverse proxy calls to this other service using http://www.whatever.com/monkey/. So, I added the directive and top directive to try to make this work. It is weird though...nothing I do seems to have any effect. I can put the exact same markup in my default website virtualhost file and it works great. What is the deal?   • iPhone 3G S sync services problem

    When I try and synchronise my iPhone with iTunes, I get a dialog informing me that "syncing has been disabled on this computer". (I've never disabled syncing myself, and it worked perfectly fine a day ago) Music synchronises fine, as do videos, however, my contacts do not. Google Contacts no longer appears in the list to choose from, and the select box is empty. When I choose to re-enable syncing, iTunes informs me that "iTunes was unable to load provider data from Sync Services". I've followed several steps I've found on the internet, including deleting the C:\Users\Ryan\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Sync Services directory, but to no avail. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Is there a Service (in the Windows-form-of-daemon sense) that I accidentally disabled?

  • How do I find out the Mac Address Firefox submits for Geolocation?

    I moved, but have the same router and cable box. Now when I visit Google Maps it still shows my old location. I went to the SkyhookWireless update page to update my Mac Address with my new location. The process is you put in your Mac address and it shows you the current location, and then you adjust that location and submit it. When I got the Mac Address from the status page on my router Skyhook reported that location as in Pakistan, which isn't even the correct continent (as my old or new address). I tried every other Mac address I could come up with: The cable router, the Wireless router's other Mac address, my PC's Mac address, etc. and none of them reported any location on the Skyhook page. So I am guessing that there is another Mac address, or some other bit of information that is used by Firefox when it reports to Google Maps my current location. Now that you have the back story, how do I find the Mac address or whatever information it is that Firefox (or other browsers) use to determine my Geolocation? Everything I have read online is rather vague. The next option I am considering is hooking a logging proxy onto Firefox and seeing what data it sends, but I'd rather find an easier method.   • How much network latency is "typical" for east - west coast USA?

    At the moment we're trying to decide whether to move our datacenter from the west coast (Corvallis, OR) to the east coast (NY, NY). However, I am seeing some disturbing latency numbers from my location (Berkeley, CA) to the NYC host. Here's a sample result, retrieving a small .png logo file in Google Chrome and using the dev tools to see how long the request takes: Berkeley to NYC server: 215 ms latency, 46ms transfer time, 261ms total Berkeley to Corvallis server: 114ms latency, 41ms transfer time, 155ms total some URLs if you want to try yourself: http://careers.stackoverflow.com/content/cso/img/logo.png (NY, NY) http://serverfault.com/cache/logo.png (Corvallis, OR) It makes sense that Corvallis, OR is geographically closer to Berkeley, CA so I expect the connection to be a bit faster.. but I'm seeing an increase in latency of +100ms when I perform the same test to the NYC server. That seems .. excessive to me. Particularly since the time spent transferring the actual data only went up 10%, yet the latency went up ten times as much! That feels... wrong... to me.     Ok, this is strange problem, and I couldn't find any solution for it yet. This happened today then @work I plugged in external speakers jack, speakers was playing, everything was OK. But after I took jack off, I couldn't hear any sound from mac speakers. It seems like disabled. So now I only can listen music through headphones or external speakers but not mac speakers. I'm pretty sure I want the domain-keys records, but I'm not sure which domains to attach them to. The Google mail servers? foo.org and bar.org? Everything?

  • New Windows 7 Libraries created keep disappearing

    I've just got a new laptop that came pre-installed with Windows 7 Professional edition. One of the new features of Windows 7 is Libraries. I'm familiar with how this works and am trying to create my own library called 'Work' to include all my work folders on my computer. However every time I create a new custom Library, after I rename it, it disappears from my Library menu. Each time I click Libraries in the Explorer, I keep seeing the same 4 default libraries, I.e. Documents, Pictures, Music, and Video. So when I try to create a new Library called 'Work' again, I get a pop up message "Do you want to rename New library to Work (2).Library-Microsoft?" Which means that my original work library still exists but for some reason I can't see it. Can someone please help me figure out why this is happening?

  • Windows 7 Audio tracks messed up

    I'm not an audio guy so it might not be the most articulate description of the problem I'm having but it seems like ever since I went to Windows 7 some video (netflix and some youtube) the background track (music sound effects etc) plays appropriately but the foreground track (i.e. the actors and/or narrator) barely comes in at all Right now I have just a simple set of PC speakers and some times a pair of headphones that plug into the PC speakers (no fancy 5.1) I've looked at every setting I can think of but I can't find anything that could be causing this Ive uninstalled the driver and reinstalled and I still get the same results so I think its a software issue any ideas?

    I have been using Virtual DJ on my machine. The setup is where I want audio to play over the headphones and use a USB sound card to play audio into my headphones so I can listen to music before I play it for everybody. However, the last time I tried, I got an error message saying "Error in the sound driver of Core Audio. Your sound card is probably not connected, or the settings are incorrect". If I use the headphone by themselves, the USB sound card by itself, or my speakers by themselves, they all work individually. How do I go about figuring out what's wrong here?

    I have a WRT160NL router (192.168.1.0/24 - OpenWrt 10.04) as AP. It's: - WAN port: connected to the ISP - WLAN: working as an AP, using 64 bit WEP/SSID: "MYWORKINGSSID", channel 5, using password: "MYPASSWORDHERE" - It's IP Address is: 192.168.1.1 Ok! It's working great! But: I have a TL-WR1043ND router that I want to configure as a "WDS". (My purpose is to extend the wireless range of the original WRT160NL.) Here is how I configure the TL-WR1043ND: 1) I enable WDS bridging. 2) In the "Survey" I select my already working network. 3) I set up the encryption (exact same like the already working one) 4) I choose channel 5 5) I type the SSID 6) I disable the DHCP server on it. After I reboot the router and connect to this router (TL-WR1043ND) over wireless I'm trying to ping google.com. From the ping I see that I can reach this router, that's ok, but it seems like that this router can't connect to the original one, the WRT160NL (so I don't get ping reply from Google). The encryption settings/password is good I checked it many-many-many times. what could be the problem? I'm thinking it could be a routing problem, but what should I add to the "Static Routing" menu? I tried to change the IP address of the TL-WR1043ND to: 192.168.1.2 So if this a routing issue then I should add a static routing rule that says: If destination: any then forward the packet to 192.168.1.1 p.s.: I updated the Firmware to the latest version. It's still the same. p.s.2: The HW version of the TL-WR1043ND is 1.8 p.s.3: Could that be the problem that I use different routers? (If I would buy.. another TL-WR1043ND and use it instead of the WRT160NL, and with normal Firmware, not OpenWrt, then it would work?? The "WDS" is different on different routers?) p.s.4: I will try to check the router logs@night - and paste it here! :\

  • Error opening hyperlinks in Excel 2003

    When clicking to follow hyperlinks from Excel, I'm now getting this error: Unable to open http://blah... Cannot download the information you requested. The hyperlinks in the Excel file are created using the HYPERLINK() formula. I use Google Chrome as my default browser. The web site in question uses Basic Authentication, and I've entered correct credentials when prompted (the dialog looked like an IE auth box, not Chrome's, but it's always been that way, even when it was working properly). This hasn't been an issue until recently. I'm guessing our IT department made some lame change to IE's configuration that is causing Office to not be able to open the URLs, despite having Chrome as my browser. Things I've checked already: URLs are good, they work fine when pasted manually into Chrome, IE, or Firefox. IE is not set to Work Offline (already found that suggestion on Google). I checked Program Access and Defaults and verified that Chrome is selected. Nothing in the URL requires URLEncoding, so it's no goofy issue with encoding I've had reports from some other users now and then about the same problem, but this is the first time I've experienced it myself.

    I have several shares residing on a samba server in a small business environment that I would like to provide search facilities for. Ideally this would be something like google desktop with some extra features (see below), but lacking this the idea is to take what I can get, or at least get an idea for what is out there. Using google desktop search as a reference model, the principle additional requirement is that it is usable from clients over the network. In addition there are some other notes (note that none of these are hard requirements) The content is always files, residing on a single server, accessible from samba shares. Standard ms office document fare Also a lot of rars and zips which it is necessary to search inside. Permissions support, allowing for user-based control to reflect current permission access in samba shares. The userbase will remain fairly static, so manual management of users is fine. majority of users will be Windows based I know there are plenty of search indexers out there: beagle and tracker seem to be the most popular. Most do not seem to offer access control and web-based/remote search does not seem to be high priority. I've also seen a recent post on the samba mailing list asking for pretty much the exact same thing. (They mention a product called IBM OmniFind Yahoo! Edition and while their initial reception seems positive, I am pretty skeptical. RHEL 4? Firefox 2? Updated much?) What else is out there? Are you in a similar situation? What do you use?

  • Realtek audio AC 97 5.1 on Windows 7: Terrible subwoofer quality

    I have a media center PC with on-board Realtek AC97 Audio. I have been using Windows XP for a couple of years with great audio quality. I just upgraded this PC with Windows 7 and installed the latest Realtek drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ At the testing screen, all the speakers works correctly (including subwoofer). Despite that, while playing any movie or music, the subwoofer quality is terrible. From it it just comes noises, in the correct rhythm but quite low and quite out of tone. I compensated the loudness by putting the other speakers lower but the sound of the subwoofer is really terrible. Is there anyone facing the same problem? Does anyone have a workaround for that? PS.: I had gone past the steps given in Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip but still I have a bad quality of sound.   • How do special folders work on Windows 7?

    Hello, I did something silly and accidentally moved my my special folders (My Documents, My Music etc.) to the Desktop. Once I noticed my mistake I quickly moved them back. But now my System acts erratically. It continuously creates new empty folders on my Desktop. And I have now two folders named "My Pictures" in my home directory. One of which is magically linked to the one in Desktop while on the command line one one is actually visible. If I delete the superfluous folders on Desktop then the explorer crashes. It is all a big mess. Of course I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\User Shell Folders and it looks all ok there. So here the question: As anybody got any informations on how Windows 7 handles the special folders which might help be clean up the mess? I am well versed in using both the command line or the registry editor.

  • Sync files between Mac, PC and Linux automatically

    Hello everyone- I have a MacBook Pro, a Windows 7 desktop, and a Fedora 13 netbook. I have been searching far and wide for an automatic solution to sync files (pictures, music, docs, etc...) between the three when they are all on the same LAN. To better explain, when I get home and turn my MacBook on, I want it to sync automatically any file changes to Windows 7 and the netbook. Likewise if I make changes on my Windows 7 box, I want them to be reflected on my Mac. I can use rsync, but it is not automatic as far as I can tell, and I would use Dropbox but I have a lot more that 2 gigs and do not want to pay. I also do not need internet syncing. I just want local LAN. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you very much in advance.
