• Why is OCR(MODI.MiLANGUAGES.miLANG_ENGLISH, true, true) causing an OCR running error?

  Hi folks, I am using MODI to read tiff images and do what I need to do with the text. Some images work fine and then other tiff images always cause the method, OCR(MODI.MiLANGUAGES.miLANG_ENGLISH, true, true) to fail. I have researched this and tried different variations such as 'false','false' in the parameter list. I have also tried SYSDEFAULT instead of English but I still get the error. Can anyone please tell me why it would fail on some tiff images and not on others? I have done some research and found this answer: One possible cause is MODI trying to process a file without any recognisable text. A blank document, or one which has only drawings/scribbles and is effectively blank, will cause this exception. Obviously this is not good enough as there is no way I can have an app that decides to OCR some images and not others. I handle the exception, but the OCR object is not then initalised so I can't do what I need to do from there. This is a bloody nightmare! Why can't the method just do it's bloody job and if the image has some unreadable pages then just ignore them? I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and Office 2007 Ultimate. • Entity Framework 4 overwrite Equals and GetHashCode of an own class property

  Hi, I’m using Visual Studio 2010 with .NET 4 and Entity Framework 4. I’m working with POCO Classes and not the EF4 Generator. I need to overwrite the Equals() and GetHashCode() Method but that doesn’t really work. Thought it’s something everybody does but I don’t find anything about the problem Online. When I write my own Classes and Equals Method, I use Equals() of property’s, witch need to be loaded by EF to be filled. Like this: public class Item { public virtual int Id { get; set; } public virtual String Name { get; set; } public virtual List<UserItem> UserItems { get; set; } public virtual ItemType ItemType { get; set; } public override bool Equals(object obj) { Item item = obj as Item; if (obj == null) { return false; } return item.Name.Equals(this.Name) && item.ItemType.Equals(this.ItemType); } public override int GetHashCode() { return this.Name.GetHashCode() ^ this.ItemType.GetHashCode(); } } That Code doesn’t work, the problems are in Equals and GetHashCode where I try to get HashCode or Equal from “ItemType” . Every time I get a NullRefernceException if I try to get data by Linq2Entites. A dirty way to fix it, is to capture the NullReferenceException and return false (by Equals) and return base.GetHashCode() (by GethashCode) but I hope there is a better way to fix this problem. • TFS 2010 Build gives WorkItemStore error when Create Work Item on Failure is enabled

  I'm using TFS 2010 Build. I have a build definition that uses the DefaultTemplate.xaml template that's stock in TFS 2010, and the Create Work Item on Failure property is set to True in the build definition. I deliberately made a change in my project that breaks the build. When the build runs, I see the compilation error reflected in the TFS Build log within Visual Studio, but I get the error "Value cannot be null. Parameter name: WorkItemStore" when TFS Build next tries to generate a Work Item for the broken build. I tracked down the activity in DefaultTemplate.xaml (see the rather lengthy path to it below) where the Work Item is created for a broken build, and I see it uses the Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Workflow.Activities.OpenWorkItem class to create the Work Item. The appropriate values seemed to be filled out in the Properties window for the Create Work Item activity, so I don't see where I can pass WorkItemStore to it and I don't even know appropriate values for this setting.   Hi there, yet another question for recommendations for a book on Silverlight. I look for a book that covers the UI and styling and, if possible, custom drawing and graphics. Very important for me is the style of the book - it should focus on the actual programming and not on where to click in Visual Studio to get things done. Let's take a fictional example for proper usage of the DataGrid control: Bad: To use the data grid, drag it from the toolbox onto the control. You can change the background color by clicking on “Background” in the properties. To define custom columns, click on columns and edit them in the configuration window that opens. Good: To use the DataGrid, you need a reference to the blah dll and declare the namespace in the XAML like this (blah), the data model should be like blah and if you want to define how the columns look like, you need to define them like this (more blah). And if you want to do this in C# because you for whatever reason aren’t able or willing to use XAML, this would look like blah. Bonus points for coverage of topics like how to manage resources (images/fonts) and internationalization. There are quite some snippets on how to do that on the internet but somehow each of them looks like they work but are not a proper way of doing it. cheers Mathias

• The worker processcalls OpenSubKey but returns null by accessing Remote Registry service.

  My web server is deployed in IIS 6. The web server starts the Remote Registry service in the remote machine successfully by creating a process to run some remote operation commands. This first line runs successfully. But the second line returns null. #1 RegistryKey remoteRegKey = RegistryKey.OpenRemoteBaseKey(RegistryHive.LocalMachine, "139.24.185.27"); #2 RegistryKey targetKey = remoteRegKey.OpenSubKey(@"SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\XXXX\XXXX\Config\Modality", true); I tried to find the reason from MSDN. It tells only one case it would return null. The case is when the subkey does not exist. If it has not enough permission, it will throw exception. But the subkey really exists. I change another machine to debug my code with Visual Studio 2008. It can run two lines successfully. If it has enough permission, it should not only can open the LocalMachine, but also can open any of its subkeys. I am quite confusing about this.

• .NET WebBrowser control with Adobe SVG Viewer

  I'm having problems with SVG files loading in a .NET 2.0 WebBrowser control. If I create a new WinForms application project, drag a WebBrowser control and a button onto the Form1.cs design surface, and add a line to the button's on-click handler to set the Url property of the WebBrowser control to an SVG file, I get two IE script errors at runtime (as in, the dialog you get when there is a Javascript problem). The only line of code I'm writing is therefore: webBrowser1.Url = new Uri(@"http://wiki.allegro.cc/pub/f/fb/Grozilla.svg"); This SVG file loads fine if I browse directly to the link with IE; the errors I get via my test app are: line 2, char 1, error: Invalid character, followed by line 1, char 1, error: Object expected (assuming I answer yes to the prompt to 'continue running scripts on this page'). I'm using IE 7.0.5730.13, Adobe SVG Viewer 3.03 build 94, Visual Studio 2008. Can anyone replicate this? Has anyone seen it/got any idea how to fix it? (edit: previously setting the URL in the constructor for the purposes of the example, but this raised the question of whether or not the control had finished initialising, so have changed the example to use a button - the problem still occurs. This bug originally appeared in production code so the example program I wrote was an attempt to isolate the issue and reproduce it as simply as possible.) (edit 2: having tested on several different machines, this problems seems to be related to IE7 - run IE6, and everything works fine.)

  Is it possible to setup two separate projects, 1 WebForms and 1 ASP.NET MVC, to both point to the same domain? i.e. both point to different pages within www.somesite.com. Here's some background on the application and why I'm asking. This is a brownfield application that is currently 2.0 WebForms and is full of WebFormy 'goodness' (i.e. ObjectDataSources, FormView controls, UpdatePanels, etc...) There are lost of other 'fun' things in the code base like 600+ Stored Procedures and 200+ line methods in the business layer code that get data from the DB via stored proc, do some processing on the data, build an HTML string using string concatenation and then return that string to the UI layer. What we are planning on doing is developing new features in MVC and slowly converting the existing features over to MVC one at a time. As part of this transition, we will also be re-writing the layers below the UI to clean up the mess there and to do things like replace the stored procedures with NHibernate and introduce an IOC container. I know that you can run WebForms and MVC side-by-side in the same project, however, because we will be making wholesale changes to the way we do many things throughout our entire development stack, I'd like the new stuff to be a completely separate project within the solution. This should help serve as very visual reminder that this is a different way of doing things than before and make it easier to remove the old code as it is no longer needed. What I don't know is, is this even possible? Can two separate project point to the same domain?   I'm trying to make a UITableView that shows a blog post and comments for that post. My setup is a tableview in storyboard with two dynamic prototype cells. The first cell is for the post and should never change. The second cell represents the 0 to N comments. • Using the Microsoft Ajax Minifier with Web Setup project & Source Control

  I've just started investigating the Microsoft Ajax Minifer 4.0 for use with a Visual Studio 2008 Web Application I work on. It's proven easy enough to hook it into the .csproj file so it produced .min.js files for all scripts, however I'm stumped as to how to integrate this with the Web Setup project & Source Control. Essentially what I want to do is have the resultant .min.js files included in the Web Setup project without having them included in Source Control because: Having to check them out prior to the build being executing is a pain (the minifier cannot modify them if they're not checked out). As they're created as a "build artifact" it just seems wrong to have them stored under source control. The only option I've managed to come across so far is to explicitly include the .min.js files as part of the Setup project by right clicking on the Web Setup project and choosing "Add File", and then having the relevant folder hierarchy duplicated in "File System on Target Machine" so that I can force the file to the correct location. This is neither elegant or simple/robust as: It requires me to manually add every minified js file to the Web Setup project by hand Maintain a copy of the relevant directory structure in both the Web Application project and the Web Setup project Remember to add any new js files minified versions to the Web Setup project Is there a better way of doing this?

• How do I find Microsoft APIs?

  I'm a java programmer, and if I see something that: I don't know about or just want to find a method description without opening an ide or am on support I type java [classname] into google, and there it is. If I try this crazy stunt for C# I'll come up with a whole heap of tutorials (how do I use it etc). If I manage to get to MSDN, I have to wade through a page describing every .net technology to see how their syntax references the same object, and then I have to find the appropriate page from there ([class name] Constructor) for example. This is even more pronounced, because I don't have Visual Studio, so I've got nothing to make it easier. There must be something I'm missing or don't know... how does this situation work for Microsoft developers? how can I make my life easier/searches better? are there techniques that work no matter what computer I'm on (e.g. require no computer setup/downloads) Notes It could be thought that java is just "java", but it's just that the java apis are only referenced/defined in the core language. For all the other languages on the JVM, it's assumed that you will just learn the correct syntax to use the java apis. I presume that .Net only lists a whole heap of languages as the api classes are actually different and have different interfaces capabilities (or some approximation of this presumption). Edit While searching msdn works... in the java space I can type 'java [anyclass]' and it will generally be found... whether it's a java core api or a third party library

• COM-Objects containing maps / content error(0)

  I'm writing a small wrapper to get familiar with some important topics in C++ (WinAPI, COM, STL,OOP). For now, my class shall be able to create a (child) window. Mainly, this window is connected to a global message loop that distribute messages to a local loop of the right instance (global is static, local is virtual). Obviously, there are surely better ways to do that but I'm using std::maps to store HWND and their instance pointer in pairs (the Global loop looks for the pointer with the HWND-parameter, gets itself the pointer from the map and calls then the local loop). Now, it appears that the map does not accept any values because of a unknown reason. It seems to allocate enough space but something went wrong anyway [ (error) 0 is displayed instead of the entries in visual C++). I've looked that up in google as well and found out that maps cause some trouble when used in classes AND DLLs. May this be the reason and is there any solution?? • Error with Property Validation in Form Submission in ASP.NET MVC

  I have a simple form on an ASP.NET MVC site that I'm building. This form is submitted, and then I validate that the form fields aren't null, empty, or improperly formatted. However, when I use ModelState.AddModelError() to indicate validation errors from my controller code, I get an error when my view is re-rendered. In Visual Studio, I get that the following line is highlighted as being the location of the error: <%=Html.TextBox("Email")%> The error is the following: NullReferenceException was unhandled by user code - object reference not set to an instance of an object.   I have build a grid of div's as playground for some visual experiments. In order to use that grid, i need to know the x and y coordinates of each div. That's why i want to create a table with the X and Y position of each div. X:0 & Y:0 = div:eq(0), X:0 Y:1 = div:eq(1), X:0 Y:2 = div:eq(2), X:0 Y:3 = div:eq(3), X:1 Y:0 = div:eq(4) etc.. What is the best way to do a table like that? Creating a OBJECT like this: { 00: 0, 01: 1, 02: 2, etc.. } or is it better to create a array? position[0][0] = 0 the thing is i need to use the table in multiple way's.. for example the user clicked the div nb: 13 what are the coordinates of this div or what is the eq of the div x: 12 y: 5.   Hello! I'm a fledgling in the Android and Eclipse ways. I was reading and downloaded the source code for a Streaming Media Player tutorial from Pocket Journey, here. However, when I try to run it through the "Run As..." or "Debug As..." features in Eclipse, the emulator reports: "Sorry! The application Android Tutorials (process com.pocketjourney.tutorials) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." Now, from stepping through the Tutorial 1 activity (for those of you that may be familiar with it), it seems something funky happens here: button.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View view) { Toast.makeText(Tutorial1.this, "Button Clicked",Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); }}); My questions are: What's up with that line? Apparently, other comments haven't had this problem; am I missing some library that I should be downloading from someplace? How should I go about debugging this other than/in addition to stepping through code? I'm used to Visual Studio, which has a nice box with exception details for me to sift through and copy/paste to google with. Eclipse debugging showed a "No Source Code" page, or a list of exceptions. I've heard of something called LogCat; is that relevant here? Thanks in advance!

• SEO: Where do I start?

  Hi, I am primarily a software developer however I tend to delve in some web development from time to time. I have recently been asked to have a look at a friends website as they are wanting to improve their position in search engine results i.e. google/yahoo etc. I am aware there is no guarentee that their position will change, however, I do know there are techniques/ways to make your website more visible to search engine spiders and to consequently improve your position in the rankings i.e. performing SEO. Before I started looking at the SEO of the site I did the following prerequsite checks: Ran the website through the W3C Markup Validator and the W3C CSS Validator services. Looked through the markup code manually (check for meta tags etc) Performed a thorough cross browser compatibility test. From those checks, the following was evident: No SEO has been performed on the site before. The website has been developed using a visual editing tool such as dreamweaver (as it failed the validation services miserably and tables where being used everywhere!) The site is fairly cross browser compatibile (only some slight issues with IE8 which are easily resolved). How the site navigation is, isn't very search engine friendly (e.g. index.php?page=home) I can see right away a major improvement for SEO (or I at least think) would be to change the way the website is structured i.e. change from using dynamic pages such as "index.php?page=home" and actually having pages called "home.html". Other area's would be to add meta tags to identify keywords, and then sprinkling these keywords over the pages. As I am a rookie in this department, could anyone give me some advice on how I could perform thorough SEO on this website? Thanks in advance.

• Subsonic in a VS2008 Add-In woes

  Hi, I am writing a VS2008 add-in that connects to a remote database blah blah. I am having a problem with the app.config in this project. When I use SubSonic in my code, it moans that is cannot find the SubSonicServer section. This is because the .config file cannot be found. This appears to a problem with paths as the add-in is a DLL running in the context of VS2008 and the working directory is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE. Is there a way to get the app.config to deploy properly with the application so my add-in (and SubSonic) can find what it needs in the .config file, or is there a way to get SubSonic to work without the need for the .config? I am very experienced in SubSonic projects now, but only winforms, web, web service, and WPF applications. This is the first time I have tried to use SubSonic in a VS2008 Add-In project. I also have AppSettings in the config file which the ConfigurationManager cannot read because it cannot see the .config file. 2AM now and brain is tired of trying to figure this one out. Hopefully there is an answer when I wake up :) TIA

  Hi All, In my company, presently we are using Rational clearcase as the Software Configuration Management tool for our Embedded software development. The software is basically for Automobiles, to be specific for Engines (I dont think these information really matters). But I find Clearcase to be very slow is performing any the activities (accesing files, branching and labelling), in addition to which there are various other limitations. We have recently decided to research on some free & open source, distributed version control system which could be able to handle our large projects with speed and efficiency. This tool should be a full-fledged repository with complete history and full revision tracking capabilities, not dependent on network access or a central server. Branching and merging are fast and easy to do. It should have multisite development facility. With these above mentioned requirement, we have come up with some of the tools that are presently available in the market: GIT, Mercurial, Bazaar, Subversion, CVS, Perforce, and Visual SourceSafe. I need everybody's help in finding me an approrpiate SCM tool for me which meets the above mentioned requirements. Thanking you in Advance, Rahamath.

• .Net xsd.exe tool doesn't generate all types

Or should I switch to some other tool? I work in Visual Studio 2008.

• Why would fopen fail to open a file that exists?

  I'm on Windows XP using Visual Studio 6 (yes I know it's old) building/maintaining a C++ DLL. I'm encountered a problem with fopen failing to open an existing file, it always returns NULL. I've tried: Checking errno and _doserrno by setting both to zero and then checking them again, both remain zero, and thus GetLastError() reports no errors. I know fopen isn't required to set errno when it encounters an error according to a C standard. Hardcoding the file path, which are not relative. Tried on another developers machine which the same result. The really strange thing is CreateFile works and the file can be read with ReadFile. We believe this works in a release build, however we are also seeing some very odd behaviour in other areas of the application and we're not sure if this is related. The code is below, I don't see anything odd it looks quite standard to me. The source file hasn't changed for just under half a year.   I am attempting to alter an IAR specific header file for a lpc2138 so it can compile with Visual Studio 2008 (to enable compatible unit testing). • Asp.Net Login Control very slow initial connection to Non-Trusted AD Domain

  ASP.NET Login control is very slow making the initial connection to AD when authenticating to a different domain than the domain the web server is a member of. Problem occurs for the IIS server and when using with the Visual Studio's built in web server. It takes about 30 seconds the first time when attempting to use the control to connect against another domain. There is no trust relationship bewteen the web server's domain and the other domains (attempted connecting to several different domains). Subsequent connections execute quickly until the connection times out. Using Systernals Process Monitor to troubleshoot, there are two OpenQuery operations right before the delay to "C:\WINDOWS\asembly\GAC_MSIL\System.DirectoryServices\2.0.0.0_b03f5f7f11d50a3a\Netapi32.dll with a result NAME NOT FOUND" and right after the 30 second delay the TCP Send and TCP Recieves indicate communication begins with the AD server. Things we have tried: Impersonating an administrator on the web server in the web.config; Granting permissions to the CryptoKeys to the NetworkService and ASPNET; Specifying by IP instead of DNS name; Multiple variations of specifying the name and ldap server with domains and OU's; Local host entries; Looked for ports being blocked (SYN_SENT) with netstat -an. Nslookup resolves all the domains and systems involved correectly. TraceRt shows the Correct routes Any Idea or hints are greately appreicated.
