Why is there only one configuration management tool in the main repository?

How is it that Cfengine does not exist in the Ubuntu (10.04 LTS) Main Repository? I can't find a discussion of this anywhere (using Google). The only configuration management in Ubuntu Main seems to be Puppet. I looked for a wide variety of others as well - all from Wikipedia's list of configuration management tools - and none of them are present in Ubuntu main. I looked for bcfg2, opensymbolic, radmind, smartfrog, spacewalk, staf, synctool, chef - none are present. From my vantage point as a system administrator, I would have expected to find at least bcfg2, puppet, cfengine, and chef (as the most widely used tools). Why is cfengine (or chef and others) not included in Ubuntu main? Why is there only one configuration management tool in Ubuntu main? By the way - the reason this is important in the context of server administration is because Ubuntu main is fully supported by the Ubuntu team with updates and security updates; the other repositories are not.

Best practice for storing HTML coming from text fields to a database?

I have an application that allows users to edit certain parts of text and then email that out. My question is what is the best way to store this in a Microsoft SQL Server database. Right now I have two tables, one holding the HTML data and one holding the plain text data. When the user saves the info, it replaces newlines with br's and puts it in the HTML-conntaining table and then puts the regular text in the other table. This way the text box has the newlines when they go to edit, but the table that contains the HTML data, has the BR's. This seems like a silly way to do things. What would be the best practice? Thanks.

Skipping video and audio with PS3MediaServer

I'm using the latest PS3MediaServer build right from the repos suggested in the Ubuntu Wiki. I'm streaming multiple movies from my server (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) to my PS3 over wireless. Sometimes, during some movies, the audio and the video will begin skipping. This can last anywhere between 5 and 30 seconds before it goes back to normal. I have a four core i5 processor and 8GB of DDR3 RAM so I don't think my computer is having a hard time keeping up with the transcoding. So this leads me to believe it's either sub-optimal transcoding options from within PS3MS or my network can't handle the heat. Other than the out-of-box configuration, is there any way I can tweak the settings for the application to use my resources more efficiently?

Install Ubuntu 12.04 on a ACER AC100

I'm trying to install a 12.04.1 on an ACER AC100 - Mini-Server. After booting from the Install-CD there are no Disks shown. In Bios I disabled the Intel-Raid /LSI-Raid. I want to install on the 1st of 4 "native" disks and I tried to do this with RHEL 6.4 where all Disks are visible - but the UBUNTU-Installer doesn't find any of them. btw ... If I boot from the UBUNTU - Install-CD in "rescue"-mode the disks are visible?! Any Ideas?

Postfix and tmpfs for /var/spool

My main disk is an SSD so in order to preserve its lifetime by reducing writes I followed some advice and made /var/spool a ram disk by adding this line to /etc/fstab: tmpfs /var/spool tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0 Later I configured postfix because I have a RAID array on my system and mdadm wants to send me email if the RAID array fails which sounds like a fine idea. Email sending worked fine until I rebooted, at which point: postfix: fatal: open /etc/postfix-out/main.cf: No such file or directory The fix for this is apparently: mkdir /var/spool/postfix postfix check Then I found I also had to do: mkfifo /var/spool/postfix/public/pickup service postfix restart Now sending emails works fine...until the next reboot. So: what is the most correct way to recreate the contents of /var/spool/postfix automatically at boot time if it does not exist? I am using Ubuntu Server 12.04.

Apache wont work after changing port

I am working with ubuntu 12.04 server 64-bit edition. I have intalled apache2 without any problems and i can see the "It works" message. And i can also access from other pc within the network. I want to host my website using home DSL, However i found out that my ISP is blocking the port 80, 25 ,110 so i changed the port to 8010 (/etc/apache2/port.conf) After this I am unable to get the "It Works" web page. All it shows that "NOT FOUND" i tried with ipaddress:8010 and it doesnot work with both internal and also external.

Apache on Mac Mavericks issue [migrated]

Trying to run Apache so that I can create a testing server on my mac.When I start apache it starts, but it doesn't run (no connection to local host. Ill upload the unix,you'll see that after starting there is no processes, and I did a check to show you what was running on my port 80... I don't entirely know that means. WCF service and security

Been building a WP7 app and now I need it to communicate to a WCF service I made to make changes to an SQL database. I am a little concerned about security as the user name and password for accessing the SQL database is in the App.Config. I have read in places that you can encrypt the user name and password in the config file. As the username and password is never exposed to the clients connected to the WCF service, would security in my situation be much of a problem? Just in case anyone suggests a method of security, I do not have SSL on my web server.

SQL Query Builder/Designer and code Formating

I write SQL query every now and then, I could easily write them freehand, but sometimes I do create SQL queries using SQL Query Designers for various reason. (I wont start to enumerate them here and/or argue about their usefulness, so let's just say they are sometime useful.) Anyway, I currently use 2 Query Designers : SQL server management studio's Query Designer. Visual Studio 2010's Query Builder (must often within the Table adapter Query Configuration Wizard.) There's something I hate about those two (I don't know about the others), it's the way they throw away my Code formatting of SQL queries after an edit. Is there any way to configure something to automatically reformat the SQL output or is there any external tool/plug-in that I could use to do that job?

Does the deprecation of mysql_* functions in PHP carry over to other Databases(MSSQL)?

I'm not talking about MySQL, I'm talking about Microsoft SQL Server I've been aware of PDO for quite some time now, standard mysql functions are dangerous and should be avoided. http://php.net/manual/en/function.mysql-connect.php But what about the MSSQL function in PHP? They are, for most purposes, identical sets of functions, but the PHP page describing mssql_* carries no warning of deprecation. http://us.php.net/manual/en/function.mssql-connect.php There are PDO drivers available for MSSQL, but they aren't quite as readily available or used as the MySQL drivers. Ideally, it looks to me like I should get them working and move from mssql_* to PDO like I have with MySQL, but is it as big of a priority? Is there some hidden safety to MSSQL that means it's exempt from all of the mysql_* hatred as of late? Or is its obscurity as a backend the only reason there hasn't been more PDO encouragement?

Internet Radio Station for University

I am trying to help my University Student Radio station rethink the setup of the way they stream music, but I have some questions regarding the use of Ubuntu to stream music. Currently, the radio station uses two windows machines: one of which is used to stream the radio station and serve the website, and the other is used by rotating djs to select songs and create playlists. The computer used by djs feeds mono into the sound card of the server and the server streams the feed online. -Ideally I would like to maintain a two-computer setup: One computer as server, and another that is used to select and play music by rotating djs. -I would like to use Ubuntu for the server. -I would like to use Windows for the other machine. -The server should be able to stream song information. First, is there a way to somehow get the song information from an analog feed? Second, what is the best streaming server for radio? I have encountered shoutcast, icecast, and darwin, but I don't know where to begin in attempting to gauge them. Finally, if anyone has any tips or pointers about small internet radio station management/ setup they would be appreciated as this is my first radio station, and I am eager to hear of past experiences.

Log incoming requests

We have Tomcat running on Ubuntu server. It runs a web service, open to the internet. Sometimes it has sudden spike of traffic and goes down. There is nothing unusual in Tomcat access logs. I guess because some of the requests are so 'heavy' that they never finish and hence are not recorded to Tomcat access logs. Is there a way to configure Ubuntu to log incoming requests in the following format (below)? Date, Time, URL (with query string params), IP address (of client) There should be one line per request. Each request should be logged before it is executed. Only incoming requests to ports 80 and 443 should be logged.

Pages in IE render differently when served through the ASP.NET Development server and Production Ser

You see differences in the way IE renders your web application locally on the ASP.NET Development server compared to your production server. Comparing the response from both servers including response headers and CSS show no difference. The issue may occur because of a setting in IE. In IE, go to Tools –> Compatibility ViewSettings. The checkbox “Display intranet sites in Compatibility View” turned on forces IE8 to display the web application content in a way similar to how Internet Explorer 7 handles standards mode web pages. Since your local web server is considered to be in the intranet zone, IE uses “Compatibility View” to render your pages. While you could uncheck this setting in or propagate the change to all developers through group policy settings, a different way is described below. To force IE to mimic the behavior of a certain version of IE when rendering the pages, you use the meta element to include a “X-UA-Compatible” http-equiv header in your web page or have it sent as part of the header by adding it to your web.config file. The values are listed below: <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=4">  <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=7.5">  <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=100">  <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=a">  This value can also be set in web.config like so: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <configuration> <system.webServer> <httpProtocol> <customHeaders> <clear /> <add name="X-UA-Compatible" value="IE=EmulateIE7" /> </customHeaders> </httpProtocol> </system.webServer> </configuration> The setting can added in the IIS metabase as described here. Similarly, you can do the same in Apache by adding the directive in httpd.conf <Location /store> Header set X-UA-Compatible “IE=EmulateIE7” </Location> Even though it can be done on a site level, I recommend you do it on a per application level to avoid confusing the developer. Claiming the provisioned storage

I created a ubuntu server vm with 64GB provisioned storage. I remember that I specified 30GB to be used for the vm. When I do df -h, I get Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/analysis--db-root<br/> 28G 25G 904M 97% / udev 2.0G 4.0K 2.0G 1% /dev tmpfs 793M 228K 793M 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 2.0G 0 2.0G 0% /run/shm /dev/sda1 228M 45M 171M 21% /boot The disk is almost full, how can I use my other 30GB from the provisioned storage?

library put in /usr/local/lib is not loaded

Let me state in advance: One might think this question would is for server fault, but I think is is Ubuntu (config) specific. In short: I have put libwkhtmltox.so in /usr/local/lib as stated in installation instructions linked below, but it appears the library is not loaded. I am trying to install php-wkhtmltox, a php extension for wkhtmltox on my local desktop (Ubuntu 12.04). I have extracted the source and changed to the corresponding directory. After running phpize, ./configure fails at checking for libwkhtmltox support... yes, shared not found configure: error: Please install libwkhtmltox I suspect the reason the library is not loaded is that the path is not checked!? how do I proceed? Cant access ephemeral storage on Amazon ubuntu instance

I want to utilise my ephemeral storage as mentioned in this question but I seem to be falling at the first hurdle. Squid with mikrotik router

I tried to connect squid3 in my network to use high anonymity proxy. Then I have added nat rule in Mikrotik router ip/firewall/nat 1. add chain=dstnat src_address=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(ununtu server IP) dst-port=80 protocol=tcp action=accept 2. add chain=dstnat src_address=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/28(LAN address) dst-port=80 protocol=tcp action=dst-nat to-address=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(ununtu server IP) to-port=8080 now I can not able to access internet from client1 system, If I remove these two nat rule then I can access internet. what is wrong I have made?

security cameras and Ubuntu

I am setting up a server of sorts and chose ubuntu for the OS as my dad has it on a few computers. I am unimpressed with Windows or MAC due to all the add-ons and complexity of it when all I want is something simple. The system will have 3 purposes, storing my wife's photography work (she is a professional photographer) storing music for quick access to our entertainment system (will be running the system thru the tv in our living room and thus though our surround sound) and will also serve as a DVR unit for a home security system I am going to put together. My question is what sort of software options are there for the Ubuntu system as far as a DVR with frame by frame playback. It does not need to be fancy but of course a variety of options are a nice touch.

Prevent Apache restarting automatically after upgrading packages

Following on from an earlier question: Is there a way to download security updates and notify admin without installing the update? A large number of packages interact with Apache (especially PHP) such that security updates to those packages can cause the server to attempt to restart the service. While my earlier question was answered, I'm now thinking that I need a different solution. So - is there are way to allow security updates to be applied using apt, have an email sent to an administrator, and, most importantly, prevent services from being restarted at the end of the installation/update process? The administrator will then be able to log in and restart the service manually.

tail stops displaying in case of a log rotation

I have to tail the log of a server (servicemix) and the log rotation is enabled. As soon as the rotation happens, tail stops displaying. I did some investigations and it is a bug in Debian : Debian Bug Report. The bug has been around for a long time ago. Does anyone knows if this bug in Ubuntu is to be fixed? I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. I don't have to mention that this bug is total hell! Every time I have the problem, I have to interrupt the command tail and re-execute the command!

Installing 64bit Java 7 - Cannot Execute Binary File

So I downloaded the latest version of Java from Oracle so I could get a 64bit JVM on Ubuntu Server 10.10. After extracting the file and updating the alternatives I went to check my installation by running java -version and I get this error: -bash: /usr/bin/java: cannot execute binary file I'm at a loss for what to do here.
