• Using Yii framework, what would be a right way to process an attribute before displaying it using CH

  Say I have this line of code in the view. <?php echo CHtml::activeTextField($model,'start_time'); ?> start_time is a UNIX timestamp. When just displaying it in a view I can apply functions like date() on it. Where should I apply the formatting when I'm displaying it in a form, by using the above line of code? (This case of timestamps/dates might be special, but I'm also interested in how would one go about if it wasn't a date and I just want to work with "value in database" < "different representations of the value in different views. • vim command to restructure/force text to 80 columns

  I know there are ways to automatically set the width of text in vim using set textwidth (like http://stackoverflow.com/questions/235439/vim-80-column-layout-concerns). What I am looking for is something similar to = (the indent line command) but to wrap to 80. The use case is sometimes you edit text with textwidth and after joining lines or deleting/adding text it comes out poorly wrapped. Ideally, this command would completely reorganize the lines I select and chop off long lines while adding to short ones. An example: long line is long! short After running the command (assuming the wrap was 13 cols): long line is long! short If this isn't possible with a true vim command, perhaps there is a command-line program which does this that I can pipe the input to?

• Should I stop redirecting after successful POST or PUT requests?

  It seems common in the Rails community, at least, to respond to successful POST, PUT or DELETE requests by redirecting instead of returning success. For instance, if I PUT a legal change to my user profile, the idiomatic response would be a 302 Redirect to the profile page. Isn't this wrong? Shouldn't we be returning 200 OK from the request? Or a 201 Created, in the case of a POST request? Either of those, in the HTTP/1.1 Status Definitions are allowed to (or required to) include a response, anyway. I guess I'm wondering, before I go and "fix" my application, whether there is there a darn good reason why the community has gone the way of redirects instead of successful responses.

  Hello, I've usually have difficulties with return types when it comes to linq. I'll explain by the following examples. Let's say I have a Table Products with ProductID, Name, Category, and Price as columns : 1) IQueryable<Product public IQueryable<Product> GetChildrenProducts() { return (from pd in db.Products where pd.Category == "Children" select pd); } 2) Product public Product GetProduct(int id) { return (from pd in db.Products where pd.ProductID == id select pd).FirstOrDefault(); } Now, if I decide to select, for instance, only one column (Price or Name) or even 2 or 3 columns (Name and Price), but in any case, less than the 4 columns, what's going to be the return type? I mean this: public returnType GetSomeInformation() { return (from pd in db.Products select new { pd.Name, pd.Price } } What SHOULD BE the returnType for the GetSomeInformation()? Thanks for helping

• django generic view update/create: update works but create raises IntegrityError

  I'm using CreateView and UpdateView directely into urls.py of my application whose name is dydict. In the file forms.py I'm using ModelForm and I'm exluding a couple of fields from being shown, some of which sould be set when either creating or updating. So, as mentioned in the title, update part works but create part doesn't which is obvious because required fields that I have exluded are sent empty which is not allowed in my case. So the question here is, how should I do to fill exluded fields into the file forms.py so that I don't have to override CreateView? Thanks in advance.

• C++0x regex in GCC

Is there something I'm missing?

  I am familiar with MVC/MVP though my question is simple, I'm about to program a simple Instant Messaging software when the engine and communication part is an open API. so my software will have about 3 forms, a splash screen with login details, the options form and a main form with all the functionality like: Friends List, Send message, Received messages (tabbed), search user, etc. In UI perspective, its important for the GUI to be in 1 form in my application. So my question is, for the only complicated form that I'm going to have, is it necessary to implement an MVP design pattern or in this case its better to just go straight forward and put all the logic in 1 place?   I am working in JTable and I have a requirement like this. Say There are 4 columns namely 10,20,30,40 Now the value usually comes like 10-20 20-30 and 30-40 So it was easy for us to display the name for this range. But recently the values have started to come randomly like 15-25 10-25,25-30 In this case our JTable should dynamically adjust the size of the row such that it represents that range only meaning it should not disturb the existing cells and only rows which diverge from the normal range. TO be more precise I should be able to merge and split cells based on the content of the cell.

• What's the simplest way to ask for user input through Modal in Win Form

  What is the simplest way to implement a Modal(popup) MessageBox that allows a custom value to be entered and returned. In my case, a String. Maybe I am over thinking this but I figured I'd ask. I plan to just create a new Form. Add a label, a textbox, two buttons. Assign the textbox to a property and from my main form call a ShowDialog() on it. Will I be able to still access the property that way or should I somehow return the value? Is this a decent way of doing this?

• FileInputStream negative skip

  I'm trying to find more about history of FileInputStream.skip(negative) operation. According to InputStream documentation: If n is negative, no bytes are skipped. It seems that implementation of FileInputStream from Sun used to throw IOException instead, which is now also documented in Javadoc: If n is negative, an IOException is thrown, even though the skip method of the InputStream superclass does nothing in this case. I just tried that, and found that FileInputStream.skip(-10) did in fact return -10! It didn't threw exception, it didn't even return 0, it returned -10. (I've tried with Java 1.5.0_22 from Sun, and Java 1.6.0_18 from Sun). Is this a known bug? Why hasn't it been fixed, or why documentation is kept the way it is? Can someone point me to some discussion about this issue? I can't find anything.

  I have created a DetachedCriteria that is retrieving estates that have the isApproved and isPublished set to true. It is defined in this way: DetachedCriteria activePublishedCriteria = DetachedCriteria.forClass(Estate.class) .add(Restrictions.eq("isApproved", true)) .add(Restrictions.eq("isPublished", true)) .setResultTransformer(Criteria.DISTINCT_ROOT_ENTITY); I would like to reuse this criteria in some of the queries. • Thoughts on Static Code Analysis Warning CA1806 for TryParse calls

  I was wondering what people's thoughts were on the CA1806 (DoNotIgnoreMethodResults) Static Code Analysis warning when using FxCop. I have several cases where I use Int32.TryParse to pull in internal configuration information that was saved in a file. I end up with a lot of code that looks like: Int32.TryParse(someString, NumberStyles.Integer, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture, out intResult); MSDN says the default result of intResult is zero if something fails, which is exactly what I want. Unfortunately, this code will trigger CA1806 when performing static code analysis. It seems like a lot of redundant/useless code to fix the errors with something like the following: bool success = Int32.TryParse(someString, NumberStyles.Integer, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture, out intResult); if (!success) { intResult= 0; } Should I suppress this message or bite the bullet and add all this redundant error checking? Or maybe someone has a better idea for handling a case like this? Thanks!

• Is there an equivalent to Java's ClassFileTransformer in .NET? (a way to replace a class)

  I've been searching for this for quite a while with no luck so far. Is there an equivalent to Java's ClassFileTransformer in .NET? Basically, I want to create a class CustomClassFileTransformer (which in Java would implement the interface ClassFileTransformer) that gets called whenever a class is loaded, and is allowed to tweak it and replace it with the tweaked version. I know there are frameworks that do similar things, but I was looking for something more straightforward, like implementing my own ClassFileTransformer. Is it possible? EDIT #1. More details about why I need this: Basically, I have a C# application and I need to monitor the instructions it wants to run in order to detect read or write operations to fields (operations Ldfld and Stfld) and insert some instructions before the read/write takes place. I know how to do this (except for the part where I need to be invoked to replace the class): for every method whose code I want to monitor, I must: Get the method's MethodBody using MethodBase.GetMethodBody() Transform it to byte array with MethodBody.GetILAsByteArray(). The byte[] it returns contains the bytecode. Analyse the bytecode as explained here, possibly inserting new instructions or deleting/modifying existing ones by changing the contents of the array. Create a new method and use the new bytecode to create its body, with MethodBuilder.CreateMethodBody(byte[] il, int count), where il is the array with the bytecode. I put all these tweaked methods in a new class and use the new class to replace the one that was originally going to be loaded. An alternative to replacing classes would be somehow getting notified whenever a method is invoked. Then I'd replace the call to that method with a call to my own tweaked method, which I would tweak only the first time is invoked and then I'd put it in a dictionary for future uses, to reduce overhead (for future calls I'll just look up the method and invoke it; I won't need to analyse the bytecode again). I'm currently investigating ways to do this and LinFu looks pretty interesting, but if there was something like a ClassFileTransformer it would be much simpler: I just rewrite the class, replace it, and let the code run without monitoring anything. An additional note: the classes may be sealed. I want to be able to replace any kind of class, I cannot impose restrictions on their attributes. EDIT #2. Why I need to do this at runtime. I need to monitor everything that is going on so that I can detect every access to data. This applies to the code of library classes as well. However, I cannot know in advance which classes are going to be used, and even if I knew every possible class that may get loaded it would be a huge performance hit to tweak all of them instead of waiting to see whether they actually get invoked or not. POSSIBLE (BUT PRETTY HARDCORE) SOLUTION. In case anyone is interested (and I see the question has been faved, so I guess someone is), this is what I'm looking at right now. Basically I'd have to implement the profiling API and I'll register for the events that I'm interested in, in my case whenever a JIT compilation starts. An extract of the blogpost: In your ICorProfilerCallback2::ModuleLoadFinished callback, you call ICorProfilerInfo2::GetModuleMetadata to get a pointer to a metadata interface on that module. QI for the metadata interface you want. Search MSDN for "IMetaDataImport", and grope through the table of contents to find topics on the metadata interfaces. Once you're in metadata-land, you have access to all the types in the module, including their fields and function prototypes. You may need to parse metadata signatures and this signature parser may be of use to you. In your ICorProfilerCallback2::JITCompilationStarted callback, you may use ICorProfilerInfo2::GetILFunctionBody to inspect the original IL, and ICorProfilerInfo2::GetILFunctionBodyAllocator and then ICorProfilerInfo2::SetILFunctionBody to replace that IL with your own. The great news: I get notified when a JIT compilation starts and I can replace the bytecode right there, without having to worry about replacing the class, etc. The not-so-great news: you cannot invoke managed code from the API's callback methods, which makes sense but means I'm on my own parsing the IL code, etc, as opposed to be able to use Cecil, which would've been a breeze. I don't think there's a simpler way to do this without using AOP frameworks (such as PostSharp). If anyone has any other idea please let me know. I'm not marking the question as answered yet.

• How to check for duplicate files?

  I have an external hard drive on which I have backed up files several times. Some files were modified between backups, others were not. Some may have been renamed. Now I'm running out of space, and I'd like to clean up duplicate files. My idea was to md5sum every file on the drive, then look for duplicates, and diff the relevant files (just in case, haha). Is this the best way to do this? What are some other methods of checking for duplicate files?

  Hi, I am trying to increase the height of container with increase in the number of contents inside the container. Like in my case i m using tileList inside tabNavigator , when I put contents inside the tileList, the height of tileList does not increase beyond vertical height of the viewport. It puts scrollbar on the container. I want to increase the height of an flex container with increase in the contents and introduce scrollbar on the browser with increase in contents in the flex container. Could anybody please suggest me how I could achieve this. Thanks in advance.

  I am using Intel's FORTRAN compiler to compile a numerical library. The test case provided errors out within libc.so.6. When I attach Intel's debugger (IDB) the application runs through successfully. How do I debug a bug where the debugger prevents the bug? Note that the same bug arose with gfortran.   I am using rails 3.0.0.beta3 and I am trying to implement form with nested attributes using :accepts_nested_attributes_for. My form is nested to three levels: Survey Question Answer. Survey has_many Questions, and Question has many Answers. Inside the Survey model, there is :accepts_nested_attributes_for :questions and inside the question mode, there is :accepts_nested_attributes_for :answers Everything is working fine except when I add a new answer to an existing question, it doesn't get created. However, if I make changes to the corresponding question while creating the answer, I can successfully create the answer. This example is exactly similar to a railscast: http://railscasts.com/episodes/197-nested-model-form-part-2 but doesn't work in rails3 (at least in my case). Please let me know if there is any issue with nested attributes in Rails 3. Thanks in advance.

• How do you get the glyph for a character encoded as '&#333;' from a utf-8 encoded database field usi

  I have a MySQL database table with a collation of 'utf8_general_ci' and the value in the field is: x & #299; bán yá wén (without the spaces). When this is converted (for example by StackOverflow's editor) it looks like this: xī bán yá wén where the second character looks like a lower case i with a bar over the top. In PHP, what function converts the & #299 ; entity into the ī character? I've tried using html_entity_decode($str,ENT_COMPAT,'UTF-8'), however I get characters like the following: yÄ«n wén or zhÅ•ng wén I'm pretty sure there's something I don't understand about the decoding, which is why I'm using the wrong function. Can anyone shed some light on how to get the single character glyph that's represented by the entity & #299 and similar high-number characters above 255? Many thanks, AE

  I have been reading some django tutorial and it seems like all the view functions have to go in a file called "views.py" and all the models go in "models.py". I fear that I might end up with a lot of view functions in my view.py file and the same is the case with models.py. Is my understanding of django apps correct? Django apps lets us separate common functionality into different apps and keep the file size of views and models to a minimum? For example: My project can contain an app for recipes (create, update, view, and search) and a friend app, the comments app, and so on. Can I still move some of my view functions to a different file? So I only have the CRUD in one single file?

  I am starting to write some code for A/B testing in a Grails web application. I want to ensure that requests from the same IP address always see the same variation. Rather than store a map of IP-variant, is it OK to simply turn the IP address into an integer by removing the dots, then use that as the seed for a random number generator? The following is taking place in a Grails Filter: def ip = request.remoteAddr def random = new Random(ip.replaceAll(/\./, '').toInteger()) def value = random.nextBoolean() session.assignment = value // value should always be the same for a given IP address I know that identifying users by IP address is not reliable, and I will be using session variables/cookies as well, but this seems to be useful for the case where we have a new session, and no cookies set (or the user has cookies disabled).

• Django ORM and PostgreSQL connection limits

  I'm running a Django project on Postgresql 8.1.21 (using Django 1.1.1, Python2.5, psycopg2, Apache2 with mod_wsgi 3.2). We've recently encountered this lovely error: OperationalError: FATAL: connection limit exceeded for non-superusers I'm not the first person to run up against this. There's a lot of discussion about this error, specifically with psycopg, but much of it centers on older versions of Django and/or offer solutions involving edits to code in Django itself. I've yet to find a succinct explanation of how to solve the problem of the Django ORM (or psycopg, whichever is really responsible, in this case) leaving open Postgre connections. Will simply adding connection.close() at the end of every view solve this problem? Better yet, has anyone conclusively solved this problem and kicked this error's ass?

  Hi, I would like to verify the identity of each instance of the iPhone application that a user might use to connect to my service. To that end, I would like each instance of the iPhone app downloaded to include a certificate that I generate, or even some sort of UUID that I have generated. Does the App Store support the inclusion of unique files in an app bundle? Or, must such identifiers be downloaded only after the app is installed? If that is the case, is there a mechanism to ensure that the app downloaded is trusted (from me), instead of from an impersonator?
