• Best (Java) book for understanding 'under the bonnet' for programming?

  What would you say is the best book to buy to understand exactly how programming works under the hood in order to increase performance? I've coded in assembly at university, I studied computer architecture and I obviously did high level programming, but what I really dont understand is things like: -what is happening when I perform a cast -whats the difference in performance if I declare something global as opposed to local? -How does the memory layout for an ArrayList compare with a Vector or LinkedList? -Whats the overhead with pointers? -Are locks more efficient than using synchronized? -Would creating my own array using int[] be faster than using ArrayList -Advantages/disadvantages of declaring a variable volatile I have got a copy of Java Performance Tuning but it doesnt go down very low and it contains rather obvious things like suggesting a hashmap instead of using an ArrayList as you can map the keys to memory addresses etc. I want something a bit more Computer Sciencey, linking the programming language to what happens with the assembler/hardware. The reason im asking is that I have an interview coming up for a job in High Frequency Trading and everything has to be as efficient as possible, yet I cant remember every single possible efficiency saving so i'd just like to learn the fundamentals.   I read many posts here and on other sites, but can not find the problem creating my Error: I use an AsyncTask because I want to easily manipulate the UI Thread before and after Execution. In doInBackground I create a ThreadPoolExecutor and execute Runnables. • Where can I view rountrip information in my ASP.NET application?

  Hi All, I'm playing around with storing application settings in my database, but I think I may have created a situation where superfluous roundtrips are being made. Is there an easy way to view roundtrips made to an MS Access (I know, I know) backend? I guess while I'm here, I should ask for advice on the best way to handle this project. I'm building an app that generates links based on file names (files are numbered ints, 0-5000). The files are stored on network shares, arranged by name, and the paths change frequently as files are bulk transfered to create space, etc. Example: Files 1000 - 2000 go to /path/1000s Files 2001 - 3000 go to /path/2000s Files 3001 - 4000 go to /path/3000s etc I'm sure by now you can see where I'm going with this. Ultimately, I'm trying to avoid making a roundtrip to get the paths for every single file as they are displayed in a gridview. I'm open to the notion that I've gone about this all wrong and that my idea might be rubbish. I've toyed around with the notion of just creating a flat file, but if I do that, do I still run into the problem of having that file opened and closed for every file displayed in a gridview?

• Can a custom MFC window/dialog be a template class?

  There's a bunch of special macros that MFC uses when creating dialogs, and in my quick tests I'm getting weird errors trying to compile a template dialog class. Is this likely to be a big pain to achieve? • How do I place widgets above and below a listview?

  I have a list view and want to put stuff both above(on the y axis) and below(y axis) it including images, text views, and a row of buttons. Below is a simplified version of what I am creating. • Transaction within a Transaction in C#

  I'm importing a flat file of invoices into a database using C#. I'm using the TransactionScope to roll back the entire operation if a problem is encountered. It is a tricky input file, in that one row does not necessary equal one record. It also includes linked records. An invoice would have a header line, line items, and then a total line. Some of the invoices will need to be skipped, but I may not know it needs to be skipped until I reach the total line. One strategy is to store the header, line items, and total line in memory, and save everything once the total line is reached. I'm pursuing that now. However, I was wondering if it could be done a different way. Creating a "nested" transaction around the invoice, inserting the header row, and line items, then updating the invoice when the total line is reached. This "nested" transaction would roll back if it is determined the invoice needs to be skipped, but the overall transaction would continue. Is this possible, practical, and how would you set this up?

  I have an object which is creating several event handlers using lambda expressions, and I need to remove all handlers created in that object in one time. I'm trying to create some unified static object which will 'know' which handler relates to which object and event if event handler was created through this static object. • Why is my Perl script that calls FTP all of a sudden failing?

When I print the $code variable, I am getting 256. • Ruby on Rails login using legacy user database

  Hello, I have a Rails application that connects to a legacy database (Oracle) and displays some information from a particular user. Right now the user is passed as a URL parameter, but this has obvious security issues because users should only be able to see their own data. To solve that, I want to implement a user login, and I did some research and came across 2 components for that, restful_authentication and authlogic. The problem is that I need to use an existing user/password database instead of creating a new one, which is the common way to use those components. The password is encrypted by a custom Oracle package, but let's assume it is stored as plain text to make things simpler. I only need very basic functionality, which is login a user and keep them logged in forever until logout. No changes to the database will be made by this application, so there's no need for sign up, e-mail activation, reset password, etc. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to do that? Is any of those 2 components a good solution? If not, what would be recommended? Thanks!

  I learned about $_SESSION about several weeks ago when creating a login page. I can successfully login and use it with variables. Currently I am trying to understand $_SESSION and $_COOKIE. Please correct me if I am wrong, I can use $_SESSION when logging in and moving around pages. With $_COOKIE, it is used to remember when I last visit and preferences. Another thing involving cookies is that when websites use advertisements (for example: Google AdSense), they use the cookies to track when visitor click on a advertisement, right? I can use both ($_SESSION & $_COOKIE)? I read somewhere that you can store the session_id as value for the cookie. Also, I read about security which let to me finding this: What do I need to store in the php session when user logged in?. Is using session_regenerate_id good for when a user comes back to the site? And this: How to store a cookie with php involving uniqid. For those wanting to know about the login, I use email and password. That way the user can be able to change their username. I look forward to learning more about these two from anybody who would like to share their knowledge about it. • Where to place interactive objects in JavaScript?

  I'm creating a web based application (i.e. JavaScript with jQuery and lots of SVG) where the user interacts with "objects" on the screen (think of DIVs that can be draged around, resized and connected by arraows - like a vector drawing programm or a graphical programming language). As each "object" contains individual information but is allways belonging to a "class" of elements it's obvious that this application should be programmed by using an OOP approach. But where do I store the "objects" best? Should I create a global structure ("registry") with all (JS native) objects and tell them "draw yourself on the DOM"? Or should I avoid such a structure and think of the (relevant) DOM nodes as my objects and attach the relevant data as .data() to them? The first approach is very MVC - but I guess the attachment of all the event handlers will be non trivial. The second approach will handle the events in a trivial way and it doesn't create a duplicate structure, but I guess the usual OO stuff (like methods) will be more complex. What do you recomend? I think the answer will be JavaScript and SVG specific as "usual" programming languages don't have such a highly organized output "canvas".

• HashMap Memory Leak because of Dynamic Array

  I am attempting to create my own HashMap to understand how they work. I am using an array of Linked Lists to store the values(strings) in my hashmap. I am creating the array like this: Node** list; Instead of this: Node* list[nSize]; This is so the array can be any size at runtime. But I think I am getting a memory leak because of how I am doing this. I dont know where the error is but when I run the following simple code the .exe crashes. Why is my application crashing and how can I fix it? Note: I am aware that using a vector would be much better than an array but this is just for learning and I want to challenge myself to create the hashmap using a 'Dynamic' Array.   Suppose I have a value for which I have a default, which can be overridden if System.getProperty("foo") is set. I have one module for which I have bindConstant().annotatedWith(Names.named("Default foo")).to(defaultValue); I'm wondering what the best way of implementing a module for which I want to bind something annotated with "foo" to System.getProperty("foo"), or, if it does not exist, the "Default foo" binding.   Am attempting to teach myself to program using Tcl. The task i've set myself to motivate my learning of Tcl is to solve the 8 queens problem. My approach to creating a program is to successively 'prototype' a solution. I have asked an earlier question related to the correctly laying out the nested for loops and received a helpful answer. To my dismay I find that the next development of my code creates the same interpreter error : "wrong # args" I have been careful to have an open brace at the end of the line preceding the while loop command. I've also tried to put the arguments of the whileloop in braces. This generates a different error. I have sincerely tried to understand the Tcl syntax man page - not too successfully - suggested by the answerer of my earlier question. In the QT document, it says that when we emit a signal it will be placed in the queue and late it will be delivered to the windows. • Reordering fields in Django model

  I want to add few fields to every model in my django application. This time it's created_at, updated_at and notes. Duplicating code for every of 20+ models seems dumb. So, I decided to use abstract base class which would add these fields. The problem is that fields inherited from abstract base class come first in the field list in admin. Declaring field order for every ModelAdmin class is not an option, it's even more duplicate code than with manual field declaration. • Keeping the number of objects and event-listeners on stage as low as possible

  Hello. I am creating a site with lots of big scrollable text-boxes in it. Each text-box object contained some text, and two buttons to scroll up/down with. The scroll buttons each had an event listener so the text moved when you clicked them. These text-boxes were stacked on-top of each other with all except one having an alpha of 0. If I wanted to change which text-box is active I move it to the front and call a small TweenLite animation. To the left (outside of the text-box objects) I have an object similar to a menu. It also has about 12 or so event-listeners (one for every button). This turns out cause A LOT of lag an it's very troublesome for my laptop to run it. What I need help with doing is to reduce the number of event-listeners on the stage and also the amount of text-boxes. What I was thinking was to add the text-boxes using AS so I only have 1 on the stage at a time but I couldn't figure out how to do it. I also thought it might be better to just use 1 big event-listeners and from mouseX and mouseY decide which button the user is trying to push. Are there any better alternatives to this? And if so, please elaborate on how to do it.

  I am working on a PHP based, ticket management system. While creating a ticket, one can upload an attachment. I want to put a limit (say 10 MB) per file upload. To implement this I plan the following- 1. In php.ini set post_max_size = 10M 2.In PHP script which receives the POST- Since the file is larger than post_max_size, $_FILES[] will be empty. But I can still check the content-length header and discard the upload, if size more than 10M. While testing this I tried uploading a file of 1 GB and analysed the http traffic and this is what I found. - the entire 1 GB data is first uploaded to a to the server temporarily and discarded once the http request completes. Though I couldn't exactly find out where the file was getting saved(as it was not there in the temporary directory in the server.), but my http traffic analyzer showed that the browser did send 1 GB data to the server. - the PHP script execution started only after completion of the http request(i.e after uploading the entire 1 GB) Now I have 2 concerns: a) People may exploit my server bandwidth by trying to upload large file, which I will have to discard anyways. b) Even worse, if someone starts uploading a huge file (say 100 GB), entire 100 GB data is first uploaded to the server temporarily, that means for that period, it will consume that much of memory on my server. What's the common solution for this. Am I missing something here?

• Send Automated Email through Windows Service that has an embedded image using C#

  I already have a C# windows service that we use internally to monitor a directory on our network and when it detects a change sends off an email using our internal SMTP server to the specified groups of people. Now I need to embedd an image in that automated email. I understand that I need to create an AlternateView and a Linked Resource and use the Linked Resource's cID in the AlternateView, correct. What I do not understand is where do I put the image? Should I add it to my service project and set Copy to Output Directory = Copy Always? If so, how would I then access when creating my LinkedResource? Also, where do I put the image on the Server hosting the Service? Here is what I have so far but it doesn't seem to work. I don't get any errors, that I am aware of, but I do not get an email either. • Testing paginated UIScrollView on iPad

  I'm creating a magazine reader (something like iGizmo on iPad). I have two scrollviews one that paginate over articles and second to paginate inside of an article through pages. I'd like to check memory usage of my app after scrolling through 20 pages. To do so I decided to create an automated ui test that scrolls 20 times right and the check the memory foot print at the end of the test. I need that info to have some metrics before I start optimizing the memory usage And Here is the thing: I can't make the ui automation to pass to the second page. My automation code looks like that: var window = UIATarget.localTarget().frontMostApp().mainWindow(); var articleScrollView = window.scrollViews()[0]; articleScrollView.scrollRight(); // do you know any command to wait until first scrolls ends? articleScrollView.scrollRight(); // this one doesn't work I guess that I need to wait for the first scorlling to end before I can run another one, but I don't know how to do that as each page is just an image. (I don't have anything else on pages yet) Any idea?

• How to translate the fields of a database model?

  I have some tables/models in a web app that will have multilingual content. For example a university, with it's description in a default language(english) and the user wants he can see the same information in another language( if the object has it's fields translated). If there were only a few languages then I would just add fields like name_en and name_de and so on, but the number of languages isn't fixed, so that' would create a mess. I could also just create a new object with the translated data but then foreign keys wouldn't work, and only some of the fields can be translated so that would create duplicate data. Storing the translations in a file and using gettext or something similar is also not an option since the objects fields can be translated by the website user, not only developers/admins. What would be the best way to design/architect such a database? Searching from the translated data should also be not too complex - as it should not require creating complex joins which would make the queries slower I'm using PostgreSQL and Ruby of Rails but I'm not looking for a technical solution but for a general idea how to design it.

  Im trying to design a model that can manage different requests for different water sources. Platform : MAC OSX, using latest Python with TuLip module installed. For example, Definitions : Two water sources : w1 and w2 3 different requests : r1,r2,and r3 - Specifications : Water 1 (w1) is preferred, but w2 will be used if w1 unavailable. Water 2 is only used if w1 is depleted. r1 has the maximum priority. If all entities request simultaneously, r1's supply must not fall below 50%. - The water sources are not discrete but rather continuous, this will increase the difficulty of creating the model. I can do a crude discretization for the water levels but I prefer finding a model for the continuous state first. So how do I start doing that ? Some of my thoughts : Create a matrix W where w1,w2 ? W Create a matrix R where r1,r2,r3 ? R or leave all variables singular without putting them in a matrix I'm not an expert in coding so that's why I need help. Not sure what is the best way to start tackling this problem. I am only interested in the model, or a code sample of how can this be put together. edit Now imagine I do a crude discretization of the water sources to have w1=[0...4] and w2=[0...4] for 0, 25, 50, 75,100 percent respectively. == means implies Usage of water sources : if w1[0]==w2[4] -- meaning if water source 1 has 0%, then use 100% of water source 2 etc if w1[1]==w2[3] if w1[2]==w2[2] if w1[3]==w2[1] if w1[4]==w2[0] r1=r2=r3=[0,1] -- 0 means request OFF and 1 means request ON Now what model can be designed that will give each request 100% water depending on the values of w1 and w2 (w1 and w2 values are uncontrollable so cannot define specific value, but 0...4 is used for simplicity )

• Using DisplayFor inside a display template

  I've created a htmlhelper extension to reduce the amount of repetitive markup when creating forms: public static MvcHtmlString RenderField<TModel, TValue>(this HtmlHelper<TModel> htmlHelper, Expression<Func<TModel, TValue>> expression) { return htmlHelper.DisplayFor(expression, "formfield"); } The idea being that inside my views I can just write @Html.RenderField(x=>x.MyFieldName) and it will print the label and the field's content with the appropriate div tags in place already. Inside the displaytemplates folder I have created formfield.cshtml containing the following: <div class="display-group"> <div class="display-label"> @Html.LabelFor(x => x) </div> <div class="display-field"> @Html.DisplayFor(x => x) </div> </div> Unfortunately it doesn't appear that it is possible to nest DisplayFor inside a display template (it doesn't render anything). I don't want to just using @Model because then I won't get checkboxes for boolean values, calendar controls for dates etc. Is there a good way around this?
