• Declarative programming vs. Imperative programming

  I feel very comfortable with Imperative programming. I never have trouble expressing algorithmically what I want the computer to do once I figured out what is it that I want it to do. But when it comes to languages like SQL or Relational Algebra I often get stuck because my head is too used to Imperative programming. For example, suppose you have the relations band(bandName, bandCountry), venue(venueName, venueCountry), plays(bandName, venueName), and I want to write a query that says: all venueNames such that for every bandCountry there's a band from that country that plays in venue of that name. In my mind I immediately go "for each venueName iterate over all the bandCountries and for each bandCountry get the list of bands that come from it. If none of them play in venueName, go to next venueName. Else, at the end of the bandCountries iteration add venueName to the set of good venueNames". ...but you can't talk like that in SQL and I actually need to think about how to formulate this, with the intuitive Imperative solution constantly nagging in the back of my head. Did anybody else had this problem? How did you overcome this? Did you figured out a paradigm shift? Made a map from Imperative concepts to SQL concepts to translate Imperative solutions into Declarative ones? Read a good book? PS I'm not looking for a solution to the above query, I did solve it.

• What are the options for hosting a small Plone site?

  I’ve developed a portfolio website for myself using Plone 4, and I’m looking for someplace to host it. Most Plone hosting services seem to focus on large, corporate deployments, but I need something that I can afford on a very limited budget and fits a small, single-admin website. My understanding is that my basic options are thus: I can go with a hosting service that specifically provides Plone. I know of WebFaction, but what others exist? Also, I’d have two stipulations for a Plone hosting service: (a) It needs to use Plone 4, for which I’ve developed my site, and (b) it needs to allow me SSH access to a home directory (including the Plone configuration), so that I may use my custom development eggs and such. I could use a VPS hosting service. What are my options here? Again, I need something cheap and scaled to my level. I could use Amazon EC2 or a similar service (please tell me of any) and pay by the tiniest unit of data. I’m a little scared of this because I have no idea how to do a cost-benefit analysis between this and a regular VPS host. The advantage of this approach would be that I only pay for what I use, making it very scalable, but I don’t know how the overall cost would compare to any VPS host under similar circumstances. What factors enter into the cost of Amazon EC2? What can I expect to pay under either option for regular traffic for a new website? Which one is more desirable for when a rush of visitors drive up my bandwidth bill? One last note: I know Plone isn’t common for websites for individuals, but please don’t try to talk me out of it here; that’s a completely different subject. For now, assume I’m sticking with Plone for good. Also, I have seen the Plone hosting services list on Plone.org—it’s twenty pages long, and the first page was nothing but professional Plone consulting services that sometimes offer hosting for business clients.   A USA based company is assessing Demantra Trade Promotion Management (TPM) capability.  It appears that SOX is necessary in their case due to the nature of what TPM does and the necessity for auditability.  Do we have any detail on SOX compliance for Demantra? Answser ------- SOX compliance with regards to IT: 1.  Requires auditing of data changes done by who, what, when     a. Audit trail profiles can be set up for key financial series and view them in audit trail reports     b. One functionality we do not have which typically is asked for is user login history. We have only        active sessions, history is not available. 2.  Segregation of duties     a. With respect to TPM, you could have deduction and financial analyst for settlement be different        from promotion creator, promotion approver or sales team.     b. Budget Approver for funds can be different from funds consumer.     c. Promotion creator can be different than promotion approver     d. For a US customer you may have to write some custom scripts to capture promotion status change        and produce an external report as part of compliance. • Procedural Generation of tile-based 2d World

  I am writing a 2d game that uses tile-based top-down graphics to build the world (i.e. the ground plane). Manually made this works fine. Now I want to generate the ground plane procedurally at run time. In other words: I want to place the tiles (their textures) randomised on the fly. Of course I cannot create an endless ground plane, so I need to restrict how far from the player character (on which the camera focuses on) I procedurally generate the ground floor. My approach would be like this: I have a 2d grid that stores all tiles of the floor at their correct x/y coordinates within the game world. When the players moves the character, therefore also the camera, I constantly check whether there are empty locations in my x/y map within a max. distance from the character, i.e. cells in my virtual grid that have no tile set. In such a case I place a new tile there. Therefore the player would always see the ground plane without gaps or empty spots. I guess that would work, but I am not sure whether that would be the best approach. Is there a better alternative, maybe even a best-practice for my case?

• Backing up SQL Azure

  That's it!!! After many days and nights... and an amazing set of challenges, I just released the Enzo Backup for SQL Azure BETA product (http://www.bluesyntax.net). Clearly, that was one of the most challenging projects I have done so far. Why??? Because to create a highly redundant system, expecting failures at all times for an operation that could take anywhere from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours, and still making sure that the operation completes at some point was remarkably challenging. Some routines have more error trapping that actual code... Here are a few things I had to take into account: Exponential Backoff (explained in another post) Dual dynamic determination of number of rows to backup  Dynamic reduction of batch rows used to restore the data Implementation of a flexible BULK Insert API that the tool could use Implementation of a custom Storage REST API to handle automatic retries Automatic data chunking based on blob sizes Compression of data Implementation of the Task Parallel Library at multiple levels including deserialization of Azure Table rows and backup/restore operations Full or Partial Restore operations Implementation of a Ghost class to serialize/deserialize data tables And that's just a partial list... I will explain what some of those mean in future blob posts. A lot of the complexities had to do with implementing a form of retry logic, depending on the resource and the operation.

• Forwarding a subdomain to main domain using Godaddy.

  I have current blog, which was hosted on Tumblr at http://blog.ryanhayes.net. I'm moving it over to http://ryanhayes.net, and have all the 301 redirects set up for the blog entries to map to my new blog, which is hosted using Godaddy (domain included). When I try to set up a subdomain forward, I'm greeted with a nice 403 Forbidden response (as of this writing, you can see it at http://blog.ryanhayes.net. When I try to ping both the subdomain and domain, they point to the same IP address, so I know blog subdomain has at least switched over to point to the same content. I don't really understand why I would get a 403 Forbidden on the same content that I can see perfectly fine via another domain. Currently, I have a CNAME of blog pointing to @, which is how "www" is set up to forward, so I'm assuming it would do the same thing. My question is what is the proper way to set up my DNS to make the blog subdomain forward to my main domain (301) using the GoDaddy DNS manager? Bonus: What is the background on why I am getting a 403 error the current way? Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. UPDATE 12/7/2010 Error on site has been fixed, you can no longer view it from my site.

• Loading Obj Files in Soya3d engine

  I recently just found soya3d and from what i have seen through the tutorials i will be able to make exactly what i wanted with python skills. Now i have built this map generator. The only issue is that i can not manage to understand from any documents how to load obj files. At first i figured that i had to convert it to a .data file, but i dont understand how to do this. I just want to load a simple model of a house. I tried using the soya_editor, but i can not figure out at all how to do anything with that. • Keystone Correction using 3D-Points of Kinect

  With XNA, I am displaying a simple rectangle which is projected onto the floor. The projector can be placed at an arbitrary position. Obviously, the projected rectangle gets distorted according to the projectors position and angle. A Kinect scans the floor looking for the four corners. Now my goal is to transform the original rectangle such that the projection is no longer distorted by basically pre-warping the rectangle. My first approach was to do everything in 2D: First compute a perspective transformation (using OpenCV's warpPerspective()) from the scanned points to the internal rectangle's points und apply the inverse to the rectangle. This seemed to work but was too slow as it couldn't be rendered on the GPU. The second approach was to do everything in 3D in order to use XNA's rendering features. First, I would display a plane, scan its corners with Kinect and map the received 3D-Points to the original plane. Theoretically, I could apply the inverse of the perspective transformation to the plane, as I did in the 2D-approach. However, in since XNA works with a view and projection matrix, I can't just call a function such as warpPerspective() and get the desired result. I would need to compute the new parameters for the camera's view and projection matrix. Question: Is it possible to compute these parameters and split them into two matrices (view and projection)? If not, is there another approach I could use?

• Embedded linux Development learning

  I come from a windows background and i am proficient with the .net platform. For work, i need to bring up a custom embedded system platform. We have bought the pandaboard ES as the test platform. The application is to stream images over the wifi. If you think about it, we are building something similar to a netgear router - the only difference being when you log into the device it serves images. Because my background is in windows i am not quite sure how to start off with embedded linux development. in reading through various sites i have come to the conclusion that going to linux as development host is the best option. Can some one point to me in the right direction regarding the set up. I have a windows machine that will be used for development purposes. I can either do a virtual box or setup a partition for linux. But the finer details are what throwing me off..what i need to know is 1) once i install linux what other software do I need - Code blocks, 2) what about toolchain 3) How to debug - through serial port ? 4) Is there a way to send the image built directly to the CF card? • Pygame Tile Based Character movement speed

  Thanks for taking the time to read this. Right now I'm making a really basic tile based game. The map is a large amount of 16x16 tiles, and the character image is 16x16 as well. My character has its own class that is an extension of the sprite class, and the x and y position is saved in terms of the tile position. To note I am fairly new to pygame. My question is, I am planning to have character movement restricted to one tile at a time, and I'm not sure how to make it so that, even if the player hits the directional key dozens of time quickly, (WASD or arrow keys) it will only move from tile to tile at a certain speed. How could I implement this generally with pygame? (Similar to game movement of like Pokemon or NexusTk). Edit: I should probably note that I want it so that the player can only end a movement in a tile. He couldn't stop moving halfway inbetween a tile for example. Thanks for your time! Ryan

• E-Business Integration with SSO using AccessGate

  Moving away from the legacy Oracle SSO, Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) came up with EBS AccessGate as the way forward to provide Single Sign On with Oracle Access Manager (OAM). As opposed to AccessGate in OAM terminology, EBS AccessGate has no specific connection with OAM with respect to configuration. Instead, EBS AccessGate uses the header variables sent from the SSO system to create the native user-session, like any other SSO enabled web application. E-Business Suite Integration with Oracle Access Manager It is a known fact that E-Business suite requires Oracle Internet Directory (OID) as the user repository to enable Single Sign On. This is due to the fact that E-Business Suite needs to be registered with OID to for Single Sign On. Additionally, E-Business Suite uses “orclguid” in OID to map the Single Sign On user with the corresponding local user profile. During authentication, EBS AccessGate expects SSO system to return orclguid and EBS username (stored as a user-attribute in SSO user store) in two header variables USER_ORCLGUID and USER_NAME respectively. • How to Add the Windows Calculator to the Quick Access Toolbar in Microsoft Excel 2013

  Do you use the Windows Calculator to perform quick calculations while building spreadsheets in Excel? You can save time by adding the Calculator to the Quick Access Toolbar in Excel so you don’t have to leave the program to access the Calculator. To do this, click the down arrow on the right side of the Quick Access Toolbar and select More Commands from the drop-down menu. On the Quick Access Toolbar screen on the Excel Options dialog box, select Commands Not in the Ribbon from the Choose commands from drop-down list. Scroll down in the long list and select Calculator. Click Add to add the Calculator to the Quick Access Toolbar. Click OK to accept the change and close the Excel Options dialog box. You’ll see a Calculator icon on the Quick Access Toolbar. When you move your mouse over the icon, a hint displays saying “Custom.” Despite the label, when you click the icon, the Windows Calculator opens. The same procedure works for adding the Windows Calculator to Excel 2010, as well.

• Changing the BizTalk message output file name

  By default, BizTalk creates the filename of the message dropped to a send port as %MessageID%, which is the unique identifier (GUID) of the message. What if you want to create your own filename? To start, create a simple schema, and a basic orchestration that will receive the message and send it right back out, like this: If you deploy this and wire up the ports, you can drop an xml file into your receive port and have it come out at your send port named something like {7A63CAF8-317B-49D5-871F-9FD57910C3A0}.xml. Now, we'll create a new message with a custom filename. First, create a new orchestration variable called NewFileName, of the type System.String. Next, create a second message using the same schema as the message you're receiving in the Receive shape. Now, drag a Construct Message shape to the orchestration. In the shape's properties, set Messages Constructed to be the new message you just created. Double click the Message Assignment shape (inside the Construct shape...) and paste in the following code: Message_2 = Message_1;   NewFileName = Message_1(FILE.ReceivedFileName); NewFileName = NewFileName.Replace(".xml","_"); NewFileName = NewFileName + "output_" + System.DateTime.Now.Year.ToString() + "-" + System.DateTime.Now.Month.ToString();   Message_2(FILE.ReceivedFileName) = NewFileName; Here we make a copy of the received message, get it's original file name (ReceivedFileName), replace its extension with an underscore, and date-stamp it. Finally, add a Send shape and a Port to the surface, and configure them to send the message you just created. You should wind up with an orchestration like this: Deploy it, and create a new send port. It should be just about identical to the first send port, except this time the file name will be "%SourceFileName%.xml" (without the quotes of course). Fire up the application, drop in a test file, and you should now get both the xml file named with a GUID, and a second file named something along the lines of "MySchemaTestFile_output_2011-6.xml".

• Visual web page designer for Django?

  I'm just starting my Django learning so pardon me if any part of this question is off-base. I have done a lot of web searching for information on the equivalent of a visual web page designer for Django and I don't seem to be getting very far. I have experience with Delphi (Object Pascal), C, C++, Python, PHP, Java, and Javascript and have created and maintained several web sites that included MySQL database dependent content. For the longest time I've been using one of the standard WYSIWIG designers to design the actual web pages, with any needed back end programming done via Forms or AJAX calls that call server side PHP scripts. I have grown tired of the quirks, bugs, and other annoyances associated with the program. Also, I find myself hungry for the functionality and reliability a good MVC based framework would provide me so I could really express myself with custom code easily. So I am turning to Django/Python. However, I'm still a junkie for a good WYSIWIG designer for the layout of web pages. I know there are some out there that thrive on opening up a text editor, possibly with some code editor tools to assist, and pounding out pages. But I do adore a drag and drop editor for simple page layout, especially for things like embedded images, tables, buttons, etc. I found a few open source projects on GitHub but they seem to be focused on HTML web forms, not a generic web page editor. So can I get what I want here? The supreme goal would be to find not only a web page editor that creates Django compatible web pages, but if I dare say it, have a design editor that could add Python code stubs to various page elements in the style of the Delph/VCL or VB design editors. Note, I also have the Wing IDE Professional IDE, version 2.0. As a side note, if you know of any really cool, fun, or time-saving Python libraries that are designed for easy integration into Django please tell me about them. -- roschler
