  Hi, I have a linear layout in my main.xml which has a listview. Now I want to create a bottom bar below listview. Bottombar has a background image and two buttons with their individual background images. I want to put these two buttons on common background image. I have read that this can be achieved using FrameLayout. But since I am using LinearLayout as base layout in my main.xml, is there any way to this design using linearlayout ?

• Suggested benchmark for testing CPU footprint of antivirus software

  Our organization is currently running Symantec Corporate Antivirus, which is rumored to be a big resource hog. I know that we do have a lot of older machines that are running slow. Our PCs are all running Windows XP Pro and are used only for business applications (mostly Microsoft Office), e-mail, and web surfing. They're not used for gaming (one would hope not, anyway). I'd like to take one of the old PCs and do a speed benchmark test while it's running Symantec AV, then another test with no antivirus, and a third test with ESET NOD32. As I said, I don't care much about graphics performance. What would be an appropriate benchmarking program program to use? Freeware is best, of course. Thank you for considering my question.

  Our company wants to be able to have LCD TVs displaying TV with the ability to add an overlay, like a stock ticker at the bottom of the screen, where human resources can add content to be displayed. I have been trying to nail down the correct terminology for this and come across terms like Keying, Compositing, Live Broadcast Graphics Presentation, and Hardware Overlay but I don't know which of these terms is truly the correct way to refer to what I am trying to do. Black Magic offers a product that seems like it can do what I am looking for but their product seems like it is geared for a totally different purpose than what I would be using it for. Compix also seems to have a product that would do what I need but again it seems like killing a fly with a sledge hammer. How can I to take an HDMI TV broadcast and overlay arbitrary content in real time?

• Dealing with personal failure

  A while ago I was given the task of updating and extending the functionality of a software project. I was given a year to make the needed changes working solo. A month into development I came to the conclusion that it would take longer to change the existing product than to rewrite it from the ground up. I'd never attempted a complete rewrite so I talked with my boss about it and he was thrilled with the idea. I'm a fan of agile development but had never had the opportunity to take advantage of all of the prescribed practices so when I set to work I tried to incorporate as many as I could. I didn't have direct access to the customer and my coworkers (non-programmers) knew the business domain but were already so busy they didn't really have time to participate in design meetings so I resigned to working in the dark and occasionally calling one of them over to my desk to get feedback on my progress. I used TDD and refactored mercilessly and even tried taking a domain driven design approach. Things went well for a while. As the deadline came closer and the complexity of the project grew my productivity start slipping. I found myself cutting corners and ignoring the practices I had established as the pressure increased to meet the deadline. I also started working late nights and weekends to keep up with the load. In the end it made little difference how hard I worked. The project missed its deadline and what was completed wasn't enough to give to the customer. I had failed. Not only had I not finished on time but the previous version had sat untouched for almost a year so it wouldn't be of any help. Luckily we had another product that offered some of the same functionality. My boss decided to cancel the project entirely and moved all our orphaned customers to the other product. I spent weeks (along with everyone else at the company) manning the phones providing technical support for those customers. After it was all over, my boss was gracious enough not to fire me for nearly ruining the company. I was moved to the other product and have been trying to redeem myself ever since. Where did I go wrong? Has anyone else had to deal with this kind of defeat? How did you recover?

• No virtual console on ubuntu 12.10

  When I try to do a ctr-alt f(1-6) in ubuntu 12.10 I only get a black screen with a blinking cursor but no login prompt. Any ideas on what could be wrong? • What causes Windows Boot to stall?

  For about 6 months now I have been having this weird problem where Windows 7 fails to fully boot correctly. What happens is this. Starting Windows shows up on the screen. Then 3 out of 4 times nothing else happens, no Windows Flag animation, just nothing occurs. After 3 or 4 restarts repeating steps 1-2 above, the Windows Flag animation finally shows up and everything works as expected. My question is what is causing this problem in steps 1 and 2? Because I have tried the following with no luck: Error checking and correcting of any disk errors Updating drivers Doing a clean install of Windows 7 My setup is as follows: Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate 8 GB RAM 128 GB Crucial SSD (firmware 0005) Dell Latitude E6410 Intel Wireless and Graphics Other than what I have tried above I am totally out of ideas and looking for some new ones to try.

  I have recurring BSODs that really have me scratching my head. Here's a look at the errors: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT 0x1A (ntoskrnl.exe) - I've seen this 9 times since April 2012 NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM 0x24 (Ntfs.sys) - this one's new, happend 4 days ago BAD_POOL_HEADER 0x19 (win32k.sys) - also new, happened 7 days ago My system specs: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz ASUS Sabertooth P67 Motherboard (Rev 2) * RMA'd my Rev 1 due to recall 16GB (4 x 4GB) Kingston HyperX 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM 2 x 640GB Western Digital Caviar Black 64MB SATA HDD EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTS450 1GB PCI-E 2.0 Graphics Card I've got Windows 7 Home Premium and it's completely patched. I'm also running Microsoft Security Essentials, which is up-to-date and always present. I've run MemTest86+ from a USB drive for up to nine hours, giving my RAM a total of 6 passes, and it didn't detect a single error. I've used chkdsk in Windows 7 to scan the C:/ drive on boot (twice) and it found no problems. How can I find out what's causing all these blue screens?

• PC reboots spontaenously: debugging tips

  I swapped my core 2 duo for a quad core recently, and generally things run fine, but every now and then my computer just restarts. I don't even get a blue screen (Vista 32). Core temp isn't a problem. My thinking is that my power supply is inadequate, but I haven't been able to test that (one idea was to under clock the cpu to see if that helped, but going up in speed was the only simple thing to do in the BIOS) Two cases where I semi-consistanly get problems: - Borderlands windowed after some period of time (and some other games, but Borderlands does it pretty regularly) - watching a video (e.g. quicktime/vlc) and having another video running Another thought is non-cpu heat? Maybe the graphics card? Any thoughts on how to track this down appreciated. Thanks!

  Does the original data type of the username string in a call to FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(...) make any difference with regards to security or code maintainability? As I understand it, the cookie is encrypted and used to identify a user on each request. I'm curious whether it should affect the design of the primary key on my Users table in my database, eg. Guid vs int or a unique username string.

• How to print 4 index cards on a single A4 sheet in Word 2003

  I have an index card designed in Word. It's fairly complicated with graphics, borders and background. The page layout has been set to landscape and with size set to 4x6. How can I print this, 4x per A4 landscape sheet? I cannot for the life of me work it out. The printer always seems to do a single card per A4 sheet, wasting 3/4 of the page. "Pages 1,1,1,1" will result in 4 sheets being printed. What am I doing wrong?

• I have static noise in my speakers and headset

  I have been having a problem with my computer where I am constantly getting static from the point I turn on my PC. I have changed Towers, Hard Drives, added and removed a Sound Blaster Xtreme Sound Card, used 3 different Headsets, and 2 sets of speakers. Lately I have noticed random dips in my frame rates when playing games. Is there any possibility that the graphics card could be causing the static with the possibility of it needing to go in for repairs? • RAD Visual Web Application Creator/ Builder/ Designer for PHP

  Hi all, I want to see if any of you know a (free and open source will be ideal) tool/ app that can help build a php web application very quickly without investing too much time on writing codes, preferring drag and drop/ point and click work-flow designer for logic design (see Agile from Outsystems below). Plus, visual designer for the business logic is great since it can help a developer visualize the logic better. There are a lot of GUI builders, form builders out there, but I am looking for one app for the entire web application development process. My goal is to find an application that a team of developers can use together and use the build-in code of the app as much as possible. E.g. the app will provide a modular just for handle user login or a shopping cart; a developer just need to drag and drop the modular to the logic designer and the code will be generated. This way the functionality will be in a module and code will always be standard across developers. So if a new developer get on-board, he will just need to use the system and get up and running quickly. To explain this better: there is a lot php frameworks, e.g. cakephp, CodeIgniter, etc which I can use to help coding, but still I need to create (code) the GUI, writing quite a bit of codes. I am looking for a tool/ app that is a little more high level than those frameworks. Here is 2 examples apps I found during my google search which they have visual logic designer and gui builder in one single app. Also a single click deployment (but I need it to be php apps or at least I can deploy the (php) code to a LAMP/ WAMP server): Wavemaker: for JAVA Agile from Outsystems: for JAVA or .net (This one is really good, with work-flow drag and drop logic designer!) Talend: it is just an ETL tool, but the concept is what I want to bring up. Drag and drop, point and click logic design. Custom code can be added if it is needed, but the drag and drop process already finished the structure and most of the coding of the web app one needs to build. I want to list Adobe Flex, but it is more like a GUI designer + IDE, not exactly what I want to describe here. The drag and drop/ work-flow logic designer is a key for the app. I could go for the CMS route by learning how to extend them, but it is not that flexible for me and is a long learning curve. Anybody came across this type of app before? Or any idea of how can I find those apps? I googled them for long time, I don't see any of them for php and just few (just 2) for Java. • Tool that automatically keeps old versions of a file? Shadow Copy in Win7?

  When I'm working with a Graphics App, I press CTRL+S a lot to Quicksave. Sometimes, I just went too far and made a bad decision, sometimes to the point Undo wouldn't help either. I would love to retain old versions of a file. Normally, Source Control would be of use here, but that's a manual process (same as just making some copies). I wonder if there is an automatic way to do that? Everytime the file changes, keep a backup. I believe that in Windows Server, Shadow Copies can do that. When I check in my Windows 7 (Ultimate), I do see "Previous Versions" as a tab, but that seems to be part of the backup function which is once again manual. Is there a way to get that type of automatic versioning?

• Motherboard memory question

  I am currently drawing up specs on a new workstation for my office. I am considering the Asus P6X58D for a motherboard. This board's specs list it as supporting 24 gigs of memory. Suppose I were to use six four gig memory cards and then two video cards with 1 gig of memory apiece. Is the maximum supported memory similar to how 32 bit operating systems only have enough address space for 4 gigs of memory? Simply: Will the board post? If so, will the system be able to address all the memory, both the 24 gigs on the ddr3 bus and the 3 gigs on the graphics card?
