    I find them a very natural way to extend existing classes, especially when you just need to "spot-weld" some functionality onto an existing class. Microsoft says, "In general, we recommend that you implement extension methods sparingly and only when you have to." And yet extension methods form the foundation of Linq; in fact, Linq was the reason extension methods were created. Are there specific design criteria where using extension methods are perferred over inheritance or composition? Under what criteria are they discouraged?

    I'm using cURL to test a RESTFul HTTP web service. The problem is I'm normally submitting a bunch of values normally like this: curl -d "firstname=bob&lastname=smith&age=25&from=kansas&someothermodelattr=val" -H "Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded" http://mysite/people.xml -i The problem with this is my controller will then have code like this: unless params[:firstname].nil? end unless params[:lastname].nil? end // FINALLY @person = People.new(params[:firstname], params[:lastname], params[:age], params[:from]) etc.. What's the best way to simplify this? My Person model has all the validations it needs. Is there a way (assuming the request has multi-model parameters) that I can just do: @person = People.new(params[:person]) and then the initializer can take care of the rest?

    I have a RichTextBox that I write a string to every time I click a Form button. The string ends with a newline so each time I add a string, it appends to the bottom of the RichTextBox. Each string begins with the string "Long" or "Short" and ends with Environment.NewLine. I'd like to color each line red if it beings with "Long" and blue if it begins with "Short". How can I do this?     Cookie error Hi, I am running S60 SDK 5th with Eclipse pulsar on win 7. I have oauth_token using with this Url https://www.linkedin.com/uas/oauth/authorize?oauth_token=. To get that grant access screen by LinkedIn. I am loading above Url using htmlComponent, and adding HtmlComponent to form and show it. Occasionally when I click on the "Ok I'll Allow It" button (i.e. after the button has been pressed) I get the following error message. "We’re sorry, there was a problem with your request. Please make sure you have cookies enabled and try again." but i'm receiving the response with oauth_token, oauth_token_secret, oauth_callback_confirmed = true, xoauth_request_auth_url, oauth_expires_in. Some buddy please help.

    I ran across the error Socket operation on non-socket in some of my networking code when calling connect and spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was causing it. I finally figured out that the following line of code was causing the problem: if ((sockfd = socket( ai->ai_family, ai->ai_socktype, ai->ai_protocol) < 0)) { See the problem? Here's what the line should look like: if ((sockfd = socket( ai->ai_family, ai->ai_socktype, ai->ai_protocol)) < 0) { What I don't understand is why the first, incorrect line doesn't produce a warning. To put it another way, shouldn't the general form: if ( foo = bar() < baz ) do_something(); look odd to the compiler, especially running with g++ -Wall -Wextra? If not, shouldn't it at least show up as "bad style" to cppcheck, which I'm also running as part of my compile?

  • jQuery Validate - can I re-validate a group of fields after changing one?

    I'm using jQuery Validate and would like to re-validate a group of fields whenever one of them is changed (or possibly, whenever one of them validates successfully). My attempts so far just create infinite loops. Is this possible, or does the plugin design preclude it? (Specifically, I've got a method that requires at least X of group Y to be filled out, and as soon as that's true, I'd like all those fields to re-validate. Currently I'm clearing out their error messages with my own code, but that's a hack - it also hides unrelated validation problems until the form is re-submitted.)

  • How can I load static configuration information

    In my code, I use JavaScript for UI and PHP for back end. I also use PHP to store application settings and sometimes my UI code needs to access this information. My configuration file looks something like this (config.php): $resolution_x = 1920; $resolution_y = 1080; etc... When I need to access any of these settings form JavaScript, i simply use <?php echo ... ?> to substitute the value directly, but it just doesn't strike me as very robust. Are they any dangers of doing this that I am not aware of? Is there a better way of doing this? Thank you,

    I have a query of the form SELECT uid1,uid2 FROM friend WHERE uid1 IN (SELECT uid2 FROM friend WHERE uid1='.$user_id.') and uid2 IN (SELECT uid2 FROM friend WHERE uid1='.$user_id.') The problem now is that the nested query SELECT uid2 FROM friend WHERE uid1='.$user_id.' returns a very large number of ids(approx. 5000). The table structure of the friend table is uid1(int), uid2(int). This table is used to determine whether two users are linked together as friends. Any workaround? Can I write the query in a different way? Or is there some other way to solve this issue. I'm sure I am not the first person to face such a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, I need a little help with ClientDatasets in Delphi. What I want to achieve is a grid showing customers, where one of the columns shows the number of orders for each customer. I put a ClientDataset on a form and load Customers.xml from Delphi demo-data. Another ClienDataset is loaded with orders.xml. Relatively simple, I can define an aggregate on the orders CDS showing the total amount per customer (or the count). (See Cary Jensens article on this: http://edn.embarcadero.com/article/29272) The problem is getting this aggregate result from orders dataset into the customer dataset. It is kind of an reverse lookup, since there is a 1-n relationship between customers and orders, not an n-1 as normally in lookup scenarios. Any ideas ? Søren

Employee also has the option to change date of previously unapproved leaves or to cancel any of unapproved leave. In case of team leader, he can approve his own leaves. Management should be able to create categories of leaves like (Casual, Sick, Planned work, etc) and should be able to adjust the days allocated to each type of leave". I have identified these as entities for ERD 1) Employee(I think i dont need to make entity for Technical lead,since he is an employee) 2) LeaveHistory 3) LeaveCategory Plz correct me if the system need more classes or entities

    Hi, I am trying to learn Domain Driven Design and recently read that lots of people advocate creating a ViewModels for your views that store all the values you want to display in a given view. My question is how should I do the form validation? should I create separate validation classes for each view, or group them together? I'm also confused on what this would look like in code.   • Adding controls dynamically at design time vb.net

    I have been developing some custom smart tags. I am using a DesignerActionMethodItem which gets me to a fired method in code. When I try to hit the controls.Add the control is added but it seems the designer is unaware of it. It is never serialized and it goes away when the form is refreshed in the designer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am sort of stuck and google hasn't helped me. Please don't send me anything about smart tags that has nothing to do with adding controls dynamically at design time, I have already read so many looking for this.

    Hi, We're starting a new project using the Zend Framework, because the ideas and expandability speaks to us. But now I'm wondering, should we first get some form of Zend Certification before starting with the Zend Framework? Will we miss fundamental yet basic groundrules if we just start "hacking away" using the Zend Framework? I don't want to see us have to redo (part of) the project, because we missed some vital guidelines from the beginning, forcing us to rewrite our code. If possible, I'd love to hear stories of others having used the Zend Framework, without certification, to see what limitations they ran accross.

  • Question on Win32 LogonUser API and the Logon Type

    We have developed a ASP.NET web application and has implemented a custom authentication solution using active directory as the credentials store. Our front end application uses a normal login form to capture the user name and password and leverages the Win32 LogonUser method to authenticate the user’s credentials. When we are calling the LogonUser method, we are using the LOGON32_LOGON_NETWORK as the logon type. The issue we have found is that user profile folders are being created under the C:\Users folder of the web server. The folder seems to be created when a new user who has never logged on before is logging in for the first time. As the number of new users logging into the application grows, disk space is shrinking due to the large number of new user folders getting created. Has anyone seen this behavior with the Win32 LogonUser method? Does anyone know how to disable this behavior?

  • vb.net array for slideshow button

    Hey all, i am in the middle of trying to figure out how to go about doing this... I have a form that i call like so: call frmSlideShow.showWhat(1,4,8,9,11,22) Each of the numbers represents a different image slide (slide1.png, slide4.png, etc..). The problem i am having is trying to create a "previous" and "next" button to flip through them all. Trying to figure out what number the user is on and going from there and seeing what numbers are still left from the list above that was sent, etc. If anyone has an idea how i would go about doing that then that would be awesome! :) David
