• Coloring Default Buttons - color filter only on unfocused state

  I want to buttons of different colors, but I want to do so while using the default button background resource in order to preserve the onfocus and onclick states. This is because I want to use the default highlight color of the OS for my app, which is NOT always orange (HTC Sense makes it green). I found that adding a color filter to the button's background drawable works great (in this case, blue): myButton.getBackground().setColorFilter(Color.parseColor(this.getString (R.color.button_blue)), Mode.MULTIPLY); BUT, when the button is focused or clicked, it turns a nasty orange_blue because it mixes the color filter with the orange of the background drawable. I want to ONLY set this color filter for the unfocused/unclicked nine- patch drawable within the default button's statelistdrawable. I'm not sure how else to do this. I see a similar solution here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2065430/fixed-android-detecting-fo... but I have some concerns with that solution, mainly what if the OS changes the graphic of the default button? Since the normal unfocused/ unpressed graphic is now hardcoded into the app, it would break the flow. Maybe can someone comment on whether it would be good or bad practice to hardcode the default graphic into the app? What are the chances of the OS completely changing the graphic? Any help please? • Modal QMessageBox does not behave like native Windows dialogs

  My application has a dialog that asks the user via a QMessageBox whether he wants to discard all changes he made or wants to keep editing. I want this dialog to be modal to the whole application. I read somewhere that this is the standard behavior for a QMessageBox, so I dont have to set it explicitly with something like: mbox.setWindowModality(Qt::ApplicationModal); I wonder why it behaves differently from other modal dialogs in the OS (Windows 7 in my case). On the one hand it functions like it should, i.e. all other input methods in the application are blocked until the user answeres the dialog. However, it doesn't 'blink'* if the user clicks any other window of the application. Is there any way to get Qt to behave like a native Windows dialog? Thanks in advance! *If you don't know what I mean with this 'blinking': Just open notepad on a Windows OS, type some text and try to close it. A dialog pops up that asks to save, discard or keep editing. Now click somewhere on the editor window - the border and titlebar of the dialog flashes/blinks a few times.

  Good Day, I have a small form with a combo box (ASP.NET Drop Down List control) and a text box (with a DIV id txtName). When the selected index of the combo box changes, I want to clear out the text box. I understand that: $("#txtName").val(''); clears the text box value The thing is the combo box. It contains a list of integers representing the months of the year. The drop down control is called ddlMonths. $("#ddlMonths").change(function() { $("#txtName").val(''); }); I thought by using change, an onSelectedIndexChange event handler would be associated with this control. I also tried (because I've ran into the client id being mangled in ASP.NET w/ jQuery) this: $("#<%=ddlMonths.ClientID%>").change(function() { $("#<%=txtName.ClientID%>").val(''); }); and neither approach seems to be working. • Would like some modelling tips for dependent values

  I'm working on a model for a simple fishing competition and I have some issues with my design. Every Species is connected to a reference weight that changes from year to year The number of point for a capture is its Weight divided by the current reference weight for the species. One way to solve the problem is to connect a capture to SpeciesReferenceWeight instead of Species public class SpeciesReferenceWeight : Entity { public virtual Species Species { get; set; } public virtual int ReferenceWeight { get; set; } public virtual int Year { get; set; } } But in that way that Capture is connected to the implementation details of the game and from my point of view a capture is still a capture even if it's not included in a game.   How can we create a model in core data on the fly? I.e getting the schema of database from somewhere and then creating a Core Data Object graph? *QuesTion:* Yes thats fine, agreed with all the advantages. But, can anybody can tell practically, what is the benefit of integrating Core Data into project instead of using SQL directly. 1.No need to write SQL boiler plate code [but need to learn Core Data Model (steep curve)] 2.WE can undo and redo changes [but practically who needs it] 3.we can migrate to another schema [that can be done by SQLite as well jus need to add another field into table] 4.For say aggregation on some field in table,in Core Data we need to loop through Core Data Objects whereas in SQLite we need to first write SQLite Boiler Plate Code and then the basic aggregation SQL query,which is easy to write,only length of code will increase...But in case of Core Data (need to learn a lot). So apart from reducing the length of Code,does it actually adds value to project? or in terms of Memory Efficiency,Performance,etc.. PS: If anybody has actualy worked on Core Data(Model Creation On the Fly) , if possible share and gve pointers..thanks!

  I was having some performance issues with an Oracle query, so I downloaded a trial of the Quest SQL Optimizer for Oracle, which made some changes that dramatically improved the query's performance. I'm not exactly sure why the recommended query had such an improvement; can anyone provide an explanation? • Question about architecting asp.net mvc application ?

  I have read little bit about architecture and also patterns in order to follow the best practices. So this is the architecture we have and I wanted to know what you think of it and any proposed changes or improvements to it - Presentation Layer - Contains all the views,controllers and any helper classes that the view requires also it containes the reference to Model Layer and Business Layer. Business Project - Contains all the business logic and validation and security helper classes that are being used by it. It contains a reference to DataAccess Layer and Model Layer. Data Access Layer - Contains the actual queries being made on the entity classes(CRUD) operations on the entity classes. It contains reference to Model Layer. Model Layer - Contains the entity framework model,DTOs,Enums.Does not really have a reference to any of the above layers. What are your thoughts on the above architecture ? The problem is that I am getting confused by reading about like say the repository pattern, domain driven design and other design patterns. The architecture we have although not that strict still is relatively alright I think and does not really muddle things but I maybe wrong. I would appreciate any help or suggestions here. Thanks !

  What's the best way to link formal specs to JIRA enhancement requests? I want to track changes to specifications using JIRA. Ideally, I'd like to refer to a functional ID reference in a JIRA ticket (e.g. MYAPPAPPROVAL LOGICMAIN SCREEN), so that program managers can retrospectively categorise defects. The reason for this, is so that QA scripts and documentation tickets can be searched/categorised meaningfully in the tracking system. There seems to be a million possible ways to do this, e.g. should I write a custom component to select functional IDs from a tree? should I write the specs in confluence, or another CMS with a TrackBack facility? should I include a link to the documentation URL? should I use some other 3rd party plugin application? should I use some Atlassian application that i'm unaware of? am I using the wrong tracking tool/process to measure spec growth? What's the best way, in your experience?

• HTML5 Drag and Drop styles not displaying on Windows Server 2003

  I'm working on a file upload utility based on Valum's Ajax-Uploader. The idea is similar to the Gmail attachment process. The user should be able to drag a file from the desktop into the browser window and onto the file upload area to get it to upload. This works fine in the browsers that support this functionality (Firefox 3.6+, Chrome 7+). The problem I'm running into are the styles that should be re-drawn when the user: Drags the file anywhere in the browser Drags the file into the upload area I have tested in the exact same browser versions on WinXP, Vista, and Win7. The appropriate styles are redrawn. However, in Windows Server 2003, they do not. In Win2003, when I inspect the div that should be redrawn via Firebug, the "drop-area" and "drop-area-active" classes are applied correctly. Firebug even shows the correct style declarations, but the changes are never visible. The only difference between FF and Chrome that I'm able to spot is that in Chrome, the "drop-area-active" style is displayed for a split second when the user drops the file. I'm not positive that it is a Windows2003 issue, but that's the only OS in which I'm able to recreate the bug.

• Reload a UITable on the fly when editing a UITextField inside one of the cells

  I have a UITable containing some customs UITableCells. Those cells contain a few UILabels and a UITextField. The datasource of the table comes from a main controller's property. (This controller is also the delegate and the dataSource for the table). Here's a simplified screenshot of the UI: Now, I need to update "on the fly" the content of all the UILabels when the user edits one of the UITextFields. To do so, at the I am listening to the "Editing Changed" event at the UITextField level. This triggers the following action: - (IBAction) editChangeHandler: (id) sender { MyAppDelegate *delegate = [[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; [[delegate.viewController.myDataSourceArray objectAtIndex:self.rowIndex] setANumber: [theTextField.text intValue]]; [delegate.viewController reloadRows]; } The reloadRows method in the viewController is as such: - (void) reloadRows { NSLog(@"called reloadRows"); //perform some calculations on the data source objects here... [theUITable reloadData]; } My problem here is that whenever the user changes the value in the field, the reloadRows method is successfully called, so is apparently the reloadData but it also causes the keyboard to be dismissed. So in the end, the user can only touch one key when editing the TextField before the keyboard is dismissed and the table reloaded. Does anybody knows a solution to this or have experienced the same issue?

• Combine MD5 hashes of multiple files

  I have 7 files that I'm generating MD5 hashes for. The hashes are used to ensure that a remote copy of the data store is identical to the local copy. Unfortunately, the link between these two copies of the data is mind numbingly slow. Changes to the data are very rare but I have a requirement that the data be synchronized at all times (or as soon as possible). Rather than passing 7 different MD5 hashes across my (extremely slow) communications link, I'd like to generate the hash for each file and then combine these hashes into a single hash which I can then transfer and then re-calculate/use for comparison on the remote side. If the "combined hash" differs, then I'd start sending the 7 individual hashes to determine exactly which file(s) have been changed. For example, here are the MD5 hashes for the 7 files as of last week: 0709d609d69385255c496436eb50402c 709465a74411bd596595c7b9b158ae6a 4ab657320ef33e3d5eb498e4c13d41b7 3b49c6ab199994fd776bb63761414e72 0fc28c5a010fc3c06c0c930c88e31a15 c4ecd214662cac5aae0e53f6f252bf0e 8b086431e43148a2c2d943ba30d31cc6 I'd like to combine these hashes together such that I get a single unique value (perhaps another MD5 hash?) that I can then send to the remote system. On the remote system, I'd then perform the same calculation to determine if the data as a whole has been changed. If it has, then I'd start sending the individual hashes, etc. The most important factor is that my "combined hash" be short enough so that it uses less bandwidth than just sending all 7 hashes in the first place. I thought of writing the 7 MD5 hashes to a file and then hashing that file but is there a better way?

• asp.net - updatepannel can't read innerHTML?

  In my asp.net page, I have a jquery sortable accordian (in an update panel) I use so that clients can re-arrange items. Then to save it, users would click a button (thats created from jquery) and it would traverse through the accoridion in the DOM, and write the info to a asp control textbox. Then invoke the click function of a asp button control, which then reads that information and saves the data. But now I decided to simplify this step, and use html agility pack in c#, so users click the asp button control (inside an update panel), and then it would get the innerHTML of the accordian. But the problem is, the html it's getting is not the reflecting the changes a user can make to the accordion (i.e. re arranging it), it the same as when the DOM was ready on page load... But note that, using javascript to write the innerHTML to a textbox, then from the c# function, I can read the up to date html from the accordian. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to get the up to data html from the accordian in c#?

• Is there a way to identify that a file has been modified and moved?

  I'm writing an application that catalogs files, and attributes them with extra meta data through separate "side-car" files. If changes to the files are made through my program then it is able to keep everything in sync between them and their corresponding meta data files. However, I'm trying to figure out a way to deal with someone modifying the files manually while my program is not running. When my program starts up it scans the file system and compares the files it finds to it's previous record of what files it remembers being there. It's fairly straight forward to update after a file has been deleted or added. However, if a file was moved or renamed then my program sees that as the old file being deleted, and the new file being added. Yet I don't want to loose the association between the file and its metadata. I was thinking I could store a hash from each file so I could check to see if newly found files were really previously known files that had been moved or renamed. However, if the file is both moved/renamed and modified then the hash would not match either. So is there some other unique identifier of a file that I can track which stays with it even after it is renamed, moved, or modified?

• how to reverse an angle

  I am no mathematician, but I somehow got into game development as a hobby. Having never studied anything beyond basic math, I have a lot of trouble figuring out how to reverse the angle of something, facing to the opposite direction, among the X axis. One image says more than 1000 words though (specially uneducated words): http://img156.imageshack.us/i/wihwin.png/ I basically want to reverse the direction of cannon objects adhered to a robot. When the robot changes from facing right to facing left, I do (180 - angle) as everyone suggested me, but it reverses the angle...literally, making the cannons aim up when they are aiming down. So, I need to do something else, but it escapes my knowledge. Anyone would be so kind to help me with this? Oh, I use regular C by the way, in case there's something built-in specific to it. To put it in other words, I work in 2D, so I want an angle that is facing right to face left. 0 being "totally to the right", 180 "left", 90 "up" and 270 "down". I want something that is aiming with an angle of 91 to turn into 89 when reversed, literally. There's no Z axis present. EDIT: Thanks for the answers! Trying them out now. I'll post which one worked in a minute!

• Function Triggered before fadeOut(); is finished

  Hi I'm new to javascript/jQuery this really has me stumped. What I'm trying to achieve here is On toggling a#sameDayTab jquery will look for .changeAlert and fadeOut it's container div, when toggled again the div will fade in (this works well.) Each toggle will also call a function that tells me how many .changeAlert's are present on the page and updates the number appropriately in a span. The problem is when I first click the toggled anchor the number of visible should be 0 as the .changeAlert has been hidden by fadeOut instead it returns the number of classes present on page load this value never changes no matter how many times the toggle is activated. • In sync query calls, one query causing other query to run slower. Why?

  Sorry for the long question, but I think this is an interesting situation and I couldn't find any explanations for it: I was involved in optimization of an application that performed a large number of sequential SELECT and INSERT statements on a single dedicated SQL Server database. The process needs to INSERT a large number of records into a table, but for each of them there should be some value mappings, which performed using SELECT statements on another table in the same database. For a specific execution, it took 90 minutes to run. I used a profiler (JProfiler - the application is Java-based) to determine how much time does each part of the application take. It yields that 60% of the time was spent on INSERT method calls, and almost 20% on SELECT calls (the rest distributed in other parts). After some trials, I came to this situation: I commented out the INSERT query that took 60% of the time. I was expecting for the total run time to be around 35 minutes, as I have removed 60% of the 90 minutes. But the whole process took the same 90 minutes (doing only SELECTs and nothing else), but each SELECT took longer this time! Everything was running sync, there were no async calls. And there was only one single thread of execution. SELECT and INSERT queries are very simple, and don't have anything special, and they are on different tables, but on the same DB. I tested with both the DB on the application machine, and on a remote network machine. I can't think of any explanation for this, as the Profiler (Application profiler, not SQL Profiler) reported the changes in the method call times, and by removing INSERT statements SELECT statements took longer to run. Can anyone give me some kind of explanation of what could have happened? (there can't be cache / query optimization stuff, because the queries were run in sync, and in a single thread, and it was far from affecting the cache this much) I should note that the bottleneck of the speed was in SQL server, using most of the CPU time.

• AS3 colorTransform over multiple frames?

  (Flash Professional, AS3) I'm working on a custom avatar system where you can select various festures and colors. For example, I have 10 hairstyles, and a colorPicker to change the color. mc_myAvatar has 10 frames. Each frame has a movieclip of a different hairstyle (HairStyle1, HairStyle2, etc.) Here's my code: var hairColor:ColorTransform; hairColor = mc_myAvatar.hair.colorLayer.transform.colorTransform; hairColor.color = 0xCCCC00; mc_myAvatar.hair.colorLayer.transform.colorTransform = hairColor; This correctly changes the initial color. I have a "nextHair" button to advance mc_myAvatar.hair to the next frame. When I click the button, I get an error message saying that I have a null object reference. I added a trace, and mc_myAvatar.hair.colorLayer is null on frame 2. Why??? I've clearly named HairStyle2 as "colorLayer" in frame 2. I think the problem is related to me using the same name for different classes/movieclips, but I don't know how to fix the problem... I added a square movieclip below my hairStyle movieclips, named the square "colorLevel", and deleted the name from my hairStyle clips. When I click the next button, the square correctly maintains the color from frame to frame. However, having a square doesn't do me much good. :( I tried converting the hairStyle layer to a mask. Doing this, however, results in yet another "null object" error - mc_myAvatar.hair.colorLayer is null after frame 1. I even tried "spanning" my colorLevel across all frames (no keyframes), thinking that this would give me just one movieclip to work with. No luck. Same error! What's going on, here? Why am I getting these null objects, when they are clearly defined in my movieclip? I'm also open to suggestions on a better way to do multiple frames and colors.

  I have a table where all of the cells are INPUT tags. I have a function which looks for the first input cell and replaces it with it's value. Can I tell it to only change the first column, no matter what the type is? I tried $('td:eq(0)', this).replaceWith($('td:eq(0)', this).val()); but it does not work. Any suggestions appreciated! The previous developer incorporated a head.inc file which loads up prototype, scriptaculous and then many of the pages are in a sub-template loading up jquery for functions like lightbox. • iphone: re-sizing gradient after shift from portrait to landscape

  In viewDidLoad, I can create a gradient with no problem: CAGradientLayer *blueGradient = [[CAGradientLayer layer] retain]; blueGradient.frame = CGRectMake(gradientStartX,gradientStartY,gradientWidth,gradientHeight); where gradientWith is device-defined as 320 or 1024 as appropriate. What I can’t do is resize it inside willRotateToInterfaceOrientation: -– and thus get rid of that empty black space off to the right -- after the user changes to landscape mode. (The nav bar and tab bar behave nicely.) (1) Recalibrating the gradient’s new dimensions according to the new mid-point, (2) using kCALayerMaxXMargin, and (3) employing bounds all looked like they would do the job. bounds looked a litte more intuitive, so I tried that. I don’t want to admit that I have made zero progress. I will say that I’ve been reduced to the brute force method of trying every permutation of self, view, layer, bounds, blueGradient, and CGRect(gradientStartX,gradientStartY,newGradientWidth,newGradientHeight) with zero success. This is not difficult. My lack of understanding is making it difficult. Anyone out there “Been there, done that”?

• Remove file from history completely

  A colleague has done a few things I told them not to do: forked the origin repo online cloned the fork, added a file that shouldn't have been added to that local repo pushed this to their fork I've then: merged the changes from the fork and found the file I want to remove this from: my local repo the fork their local repo I have a solution for removing something from the history, taken from Remove file from git repository (history). What I need to know is, should my colleague also go through this, and will a subsequent push remove all info from the fork? (I'd like an alternative to just destroying the fork, as I'm not sure my colleague will do this) SOLUTION: This is the shortest way to get rid of the files: check .git/packed-refs - my problem was that I had there a refs/remotes/origin/master line for a remote repository, delete it, otherwise git won't remove those files (optional) git verify-pack -v .git/objects/pack/#{pack-name}.idx | sort -k 3 -n | tail -5 - to check for the largest files (optional) git rev-list --objects --all | grep a0d770a97ff0fac0be1d777b32cc67fe69eb9a98 - to check what files those are git filter-branch --index-filter 'git rm --cached --ignore-unmatch file_names' - to remove the file from all revisions rm -rf .git/refs/original/ - to remove git's backup git reflog expire --all --expire='0 days' - to expire all the loose objects (optional) git fsck --full --unreachable - to check if there are any loose objects git repack -A -d - repacking the pack git prune - to finally remove those objects
