• No external network on ubuntu 9.10, though dns works..

  Hi, I have a weird problem I cant solve. I have several computers, two with xubuntu 9.10 One of them, acting as a media server, has stopped to work when it comes to external network.. I can do for example: ping google.com Which gives me an ip adress back, like: name@Media:/etc$ ping google.com PING google.com (66.102.9.147) 56(84) bytes of data. That tells me it reaches the dns?, but I get no response at all... If I ping a local computer all works fine. I can also reach the computer via ssh without any problems. I have always used network manager, but now I uninstalled it and made the settings manually like this: /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.52 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.1.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 gateway 192.168.1.1 Still no luck. I have no specific settings for this one in my router, and all the other computers, including my win laptop works fine. • unable to connect site to different port

  I have a domain was registered at godaddy named http://mysite.com/. I logged into godaddy and I went to All Products Domains Domain Management. I clicked on the appropriate domain and it took me to the Domain Details page. I clicked Launch under DNS Manager and it took me to the Zone File Editor. I noticed that notify.mysite.com was pointing to an IP address pointing to a dead server, so I switched it to an operating server. Then I pinged the domain to see where it was pointing to and it was correctly pointing to the working server. So I copied the default configuration under sites-available: sudo cp default notify.mysite.com. And then I made some edits to it to have it point to a different document root to serve files at a different port: Listen 1740 Listen 64.135.xx.xxx:1740 #I also tried this as well: NameVirtualHost 64.135.xx.xxx:1740 <VirtualHost 64.135.xx.xxx:1740> ServerAdmin [email protected] ServerName notify.mysite.com DocumentRoot /var/www/test/public <Directory /var/www/test/public> Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log LogLevel warn CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined </VirtualHost> Then I enabled the virtual host. Then I went to the document root and added an index.html file with some text in it. Then I restarted apache. The restart gave no errors. Then I type the correct domain in URL: http://notify.mysite.com:1740/ and I get: Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to notify.mysite.com:1740 Somehow it took out all my other sites. Now even the ones that were responding on port 80 are no longe responding, even though I did not touch the virtual hosts for them. I get this message now: Oops! • WCF configuration for WebHttpBinding(Restful) for supporting both HTTP and HTTPS

  We are using AJAX Cascading dropdown and AutoComplete functionality with Restful WebService Services providing data. With one endpoint(non-secured) eveything was working fine, until we tried same web page with https. Our Webappplication needs to support both. Our of very few articiles/blogs on this issue I found 2 which applies to my requirements. 1. http://blog.abstractlabs.net/2009/02/ajax-wcf-services-and-httphttps.html 2. _http://www.mydotnetworld.com/post/2008/10/18/Use-a-WCF-Service-with-HTTP-and-HTTPS-in-C.aspx I followed same pattern, added 2 endpoints, assuming WCF will pickup appropriate endpoint looking at HTTP or HTTPS protocol. Worked like a charm in my dev machine(XP-IIS5) and 1 Server 2003R2(IIS6), however did work in Production server 2003-IIS6. Website in IIS is exact same(including permission etc). The error it throws - Error 500(Could not find a base address that matches scheme https for the endpoint with binding WebHttpBinding. Registered base address schemes are [http]..) • How to send email from an EC2 instance using GoDaddy's SMTP server?

  SMTP is a whole new ballgame for me, but I am reading up on it. I am attempting to send email from my EC2 instance using GoDaddy's SMTP server. My domain name is registered through GoDaddy and I have 2 email accounts with them. I can successfully send the email from my dev box no problem. my web.config <system.net> <mailSettings> <smtp from="[email protected]" deliveryMethod="Network"> <network host="smtpout.secureserver.net" clientDomain="mydomain.com" port="25" userName="[email protected]" password="mypassword" defaultCredentials="false" /> </smtp> </mailSettings> </system.net> In my ASP.NET app: MailMessage mailMessage = new MailMessage("[email protected]", recipientEmail, emailSubject, body); mailMessage.IsBodyHtml = false; SmtpClient mailClient = new SmtpClient(); mailClient.Send(mailMessage); Very typical, simple use of System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient. The mail client is picking up the settings from my web.config as expected. All GoDaddy smtp situations I have found involve people being hosted by GoDaddy using their relay server. Some more info: My EC2 instance is Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7. The app is running in .NET 4 I can successfully use Gmail's SMTP server on the EC2 instance by using their port, setting SmtpClient.EnableSsl to true, and sending the mail through a gmail account. But we want to send the email from an account on our domain. I have port 25 open on both the Windows firewall and Amazon's Security group based firewall. I have played with Wireshark and noticed my SMTP related traffic was talking to ports in the 5,000s, so out of desperation I opened them all up to no avail (then closed them back down) As far as I know my EC2 instance's IP address is not black listed by GoDaddy. I have a feeling I'm just missing something fundamental. I also have a feeling someone is going to recommend I use AuthSmtp or something similar, I'll agree, and have had wasted the past 6 hours :)

• WCF: Using Streaming and Username/Password authentication at the same time

  Hi, I have a WCF Service with the following requirements: a) The client requests a file from the server which is transferred as a Stream. Files may be 100MB or larger. I need streaming or chucking or whatever to make sure that IIS is not loading the whole package into memory before starting to send it. b) The client will transfer an ID to identify the file to be downloaded. The user should be authenticated by providing username/password. c) While the username/password part of the communication needs to be encrypted, encryption of the downloaded file is optional for our use case. My other services, where I am returning smaller files, I am using the following binding: <ws2007HttpBinding> <binding name="ws2007HttpExtern" maxReceivedMessageSize="65536000"> <security mode="Message"> <message clientCredentialType="UserName" /> </security> </binding> </ws2007HttpBinding> But, as I said, that is no good for streaming (Message encryption needs the complete message to encrypt and that is not the case when streaming).   Hi , i am a newbie at ASP.net and after using sqldatasource with a listview to insert and show results from an SQL server db i want to try using the LINQ datasource since it seems to be more flexible in codebehind. • WCF custom certificate validation with BasicHttpBinding

  I have a WCF application hosted on IIS 6 that needs to Have 2-way SSL authentication Validate client certificate content with some client host information Validate client certificate is issued by the valid subCA. I was able to do 1) successfully. I am trying to achieve 2) and 3) by following this - basically creating a class that inherits X509CertificateValidator and overriding the Validate method with my own validation implementation(step 2 and 3). I followed the MSDN instructions exactly however, it seem that the Validate method is not being called. I purposely throw a SecurityAccessDeniedException in the overidden Validate method and no exception is thrown when I tried to access the service via my browser. I can still access my website with any client certificate. I also read this thread but it didn't really help. Any help would be greatly appreciated! • Ajax call to wcf windows service over ssl (https)

  I have a windows service which exposes an endpoint over http. Again this is a windows service (not a web service hosted in iis). I then call methods from this endpoint, using javascript/ajax. Everything works perfectly, and this the code I'm using in my windows service to create the endpoint: //Create host object WebServiceHost webServiceHost = new WebServiceHost(svcHost.obj, new Uri("http://192.168.0.100:1213")); //Add Https Endpoint WebHttpBinding binding = new WebHttpBinding(); webServiceHost.AddServiceEndpoint(svcHost.serviceContract, binding, string.Empty); //Add MEX Behaivor and EndPoint ServiceMetadataBehavior metadataBehavior = new ServiceMetadataBehavior(); metadataBehavior.HttpGetEnabled = true; webServiceHost.Description.Behaviors.Add(metadataBehavior); webServiceHost.AddServiceEndpoint(ServiceMetadataBehavior.MexContractName, MetadataExchangeBindings.CreateMexHttpBinding(), "mex"); webServiceHost.Open(); Now, my goal is to get this same model working over SSL (https not http). Now, the problem is my javascript/ajax call cannot communicate with the service over https. I simply get some generic commication error (12031). So, as a test, I changed the port I was calling in the javascript to some other random port, and I get the same error - which tells me that I'm obviously not even reaching my service over https. I'm at a complete loss at this point, I feel like everything is in place, and I just can't see what the problem is. If anyone has experience in this scenario, please provide your insight and/or solution! Thanks!

  I know there's a bunch of APIs out there that do this, but I also know that the hosting environment (being ASP.NET) puts restrictions on what you can reliably do in a separate thread. I could be completely wrong, so please correct me if I am, this is however what I think I know. A request typically timeouts after 120 seconds (this is configurable) but eventually the ASP.NET runtime will kill a request that's taking too long to complete. The hosting environment, typically IIS, employs process recycling and can at any point decide to recycle your app. When this happens all threads are aborted and the app restarts. I'm however not sure how aggressive it is, it would be kind of stupid to assume that it would abort a normal ongoing HTTP request but I would expect it to abort a thread because it doesn't know anything about the unit of work of a thread. If you had to create a programming model that easily and reliably and theoretically put a long running task, that would have to run for days, how would you accomplish this from within an ASP.NET application? The following are my thoughts on the issue: I've been thinking a long the line of hosting a WCF service in a win32 service. And talk to the service through WCF. This is however not very practical, because the only reason I would choose to do so, is to send tasks (units of work) from several different web apps. I'd then eventually ask the service for status updates and act accordingly. My biggest concern with this is that it would NOT be a particular great experience if I had to deploy every task to the service for it to be able to execute some instructions. There's also this issue of input, how would I feed this service with data if I had a large data set and needed to chew through it? What I typically do right now is this SELECT TOP 10 * FROM WorkItem WITH (ROWLOCK, UPDLOCK, READPAST) WHERE WorkCompleted IS NULL It allows me to use a SQL Server database as a work queue and periodically poll the database with this query for work. If the work item completed with success, I mark it as done and proceed until there's nothing more to do. What I don't like is that I could theoretically be interrupted at any point and if I'm in-between success and marking it as done, I could end up processing the same work item twice. I might be a bit paranoid and this might be all fine but as I understand it there's no guarantee that that won't happen... I know there's been similar questions on SO before but non really answers with a definitive answer. This is a really common thing, yet the ASP.NET hosting environment is ill equipped to handle long-running work. Please share your thoughts.

Boxes being used: Web Box SQL Box SQL Test Box My Application: I've got aASP.NET Web Application, which references a class library that uses LINQ-to-SQL. Connection string set up properly in the class library. Now referencing this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1269706/the-error-login-failed-for-user-nt-authority-iusr-in-asp-net-and-sql-server-2 it says that's really the local network service and using any other non-domain name will not work. But I am confused because I've checked both SQL Box and SQL Test Box SQL Management Studio and both have NT AUTHORITY/NETWORK SERVICE under Security - Logins, at the database level, that isn't listed under Security - Users, but at the database level Security - Users I have the user displayed in the connection string. At NTFS level on web server, the permissions have NETWORK SERVICE has full control. The reason why I am confused is because I have many other web applications on my Web Server, that reference databases on both SQL Box and SQL Test Box, and they all work. But I cannot find a difference between them and my current application, other than I am using a class library. Will that matter? Checking NTFS permissions, setup of Security Logins at the server and databases levels, connection string and method of connecting (SQL Server credentials), and IIS application pool and other folder options, are all the same. Why do these applications work without adding the machinename$ to the permissions of either of my SQL boxes? But that is what the one link is telling me to do to fix this problem.

  I use Redmine on Mongrel as a project manager and I use a batch file (start-redmine.bat) to start the redmine in mongrel. There are 2 issues with my setup: 1. I have a running IIS on the server that occupies the HTTP port (80) 2. The start-redmine.bat must be periodically checked to see if it's stopped after a restart that is caused by windows update service. for the first issue, I have no choice but running mongrel on a port like 3000 and for the second issue I have to create a windows service that runs automatically in the background when the windows starts; and here comes the trouble! There are at least 3 ways to run redmine as a service that I'm aware of; none of them can satisfy a performance view on this subject. you may read about them on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/877943/how-to-configure-a-rails-app-redmine-to-run-as-a-service-on-windows I tried them all. The easiest way to setup such a service is using mongrel_service approach; in 3 lines of command you're done. but the performance is significantly lower than running that batch file... Now, I wanna show you my approach: First suppose we have ruby installed into c:\ruby and we have issued the command gem install mongrel to get the mongrel gem installed into c:\ruby\bin Also, suppose we have installed the Redmine into a folder like c:\redmine; and we have ruby's path (i.e. c:\ruby\bin) in our PATH environment variable. Now Download and install the Windows NT Resource Kit Tools from microsoft website. Open the command-line tool that comes with the Resource Kit (from start menu). Use instsrv to install a dummy service called Redmine using the following command: "[path-to-instsrv.exe]\instsrv" Redmine "[path-to-srvany.exe]\srvany.exe" in my case (which is the default case) it was something like this: "C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\instsrv" Redmine "C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\srvany.exe" Now create the batch file. • IIS7 MVC deploy - 404 not found on actions that accept "id" parameter.

  Hello. Once deployed parts of my web-application stop working. Index-es on each controller do work, and one form posting via Ajax, Login works too. Other then that yields 404. I understand that nothing particular should be done in integrated mode. I don't know how to proceed with troubleshooting. Some info: App is using default app pool set to integrated mode. WebApp is done in net framework 3.5. I use default routing model. Along web.config in root there is web.config in /View folder referencing HttpNotFoundHandler. OS is Windows Server 2008. • VS2010. Dropdownlist Autopostback works in IDE, not when deployed

  I have a VS2010 RC ASP.NET web page,when a user changes the drop down selection on an auto postback dropdown, it refreshes a small grid and a few labels in various places on the page. I know wrapping a whole page in a big UpdatePanel control will cause horror from many of you, but that's what I did. I really didn't want a full page refresh and I didn't know how to update a table on the client side using Javascript and I figured it would be a big change. Suggestions for avoiding this are welcomed, but my main desire is to understand teh error I am getting. When I do the auto postbacks in the IDE, everything works fine, but if I deploy the code (IIS 5.5 on XP), the second auto postback works but the seconds one gives me his error. Ajax is one big nasty blackbox to me. Can someone help, please? • Team Foundation Server Setup/Access

  What I need: A TFS 2010 Setup that allows 2 application developers to access the TFS from remote locations. How it is setup: Server 2008 Standard 2g Ram 300g HD space SharePoint Server 2007, using SQL Server 2005 SQL Server 2008 Standard Team Foundation Server 2010 IIS 7 Sharepoint Bindings: TFS.DynAccount.Me:80; TFS:80 TFS Bindings: TFS.DynAccount.Me:8080; TFS:8080 Using DynDNS service to account for the dynamic ip address being used, this is a requirement for the moment until I can get a better isp package. Access using Local Accounts Server is not setup on a domain, or as a domain. Consequently I did not setup AD services. Problem: When logged into TFS using my credentials TFS\AdminUser through the DynDNS account TFS.DynAccount.Me I recieve the 'Red X of Death' on the Documents and Reports folder. When logged into the TFS through the local peer to peer network using the same credentials TFS\AdminUser I do not receive the 'Red X of Death' problem. Further Troubleshooting: When users 'Right Click' the 'TeamProject1' Click 'Show Project Portal' it tries to take them to http://TFS:8080 instead of http://TFS.DynAccount.Me:8080, which doing further research I am assuming that it is because team foundation server was setup with a local name of TFS instead of 'TFS.DynAccount.Me' as specified here in Visual Studio Magazines: The Red X of Death. Users can Access the Team Portal for SharePoint via http://TFS.DynAccount.Me/TeamCollection/TeamProject so it is not like we are dead in the water or anything. However, as most employees/staff are prone to do, they have expressed a great distaste for having to do it this way and just be patient until the current project is finished since we are under a very strict deadline. Is there a way to set this up differently, or change some settings someplace, reinstall it, point a CName record for our domain website to the DynAccount (e.g. TFS.OurDomain.com points to TFS.DynAccount.Me, which consequently does allow access to the http site without issues), or something. I really don't feel like after all the time and effort I have spent into, first the cost, second the bloody install, third learning SharePoint well enough, fourth the hours into days spent on this, fifth more troubleshooting, sixth employee headaches to just let it lay where it is at. I figure in my spare/off time I would keep trying to get this to work. So I really appreciate any help any one can give me. I know this is probably something really stupid simple that I will 'Face Palm' over, but at the moment the stress and frustration just has me beat. I also heard that Open-office has an API that should be able to do this, but I couldn't find anything about it. I don't mind using DLLImport to do what I have to do and I can install open-office on the web server.   Hi All, I have a WCF .svc file hosted in IIS. I want to use basicHTTP binding. This services job is to actually call another service over net.tcp. Everything works fine locally, but when I deployed, I'm getting this error. The provided URI scheme 'http' is invalid; expected 'net.tcp'. • ASP.NET Web Service Throws 401 (unauthorized) Error

  Hi Experts, I have this .NET application to be run in an intranet environment. It is configured so that it requires Windows Authentication before you can access the website (Anonymous access is disabled). This website calls a web service (enable anonymous access) and the web service calls the DB. We do have a token-based authentication between the web application and the web service to secure the communication between them. The issue I'm facing is that when I deploy this to production, I'm having an intermittent issue whereby the communication between the web application and the web service failed. The 401 issue was thrown. This is actually working fine in our QA environment. Is this an issue with Active Directory? Or could it be an isssue with FQDN as mentioned here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;896861? The weirdest thing is that this is happening intermittently when tested in both on the server itself and a remote workstation in my client's environment. But, this is working perfectly in my environment. OS: Windows Server SP1 IIS 6 .NET 3.5 Framework Any idea about the 401 (Unauthorized) issue?? Thx for the help... This is from the log...   Hello World, I am trying to piece together a solution to a problem. Basically I am using Silverlight 4 with C# 4.0 to access the world of warcraft armoury. If anyone has done this - please oh please provide the working .net 4.0 code. But i don't think I am getting this far. The armoury has a cross domain policy file on it - this may be the cause of the error (not sure! I have uploaded to a production server I am testing it locally using IIS website I am going insane! Websites have made the suggestion that this problem can be overcome by creating a WebProxy - but I haven't the first clue how to do this. It would be great if someone could take on this challenge and show us all that it is possible. I'd prefer a non-proxy solution first, then try a proxy. • OnExit is not entering via PostSharp in asp.net project.

  Hi there, I have setup PostSharp and it appears to be working but i don't get it entering OnExit (i have logged setup to ensure it is working) ... Its a bit tricky to configure with asp.net - or is it just me ... I am using the 1.5 new version I basically have the following in my web.config and i had to add the SearchPath otherwise it can't find my assemblies <postsharp directory="C:\Program Files\PostSharp 1.5" trace="true"> <parameters> <!--<add name="parameter-name" value="parameter-value"/>--> </parameters> <searchPath> <!-- Always add the binary folder to the search path. --> <add name="bin" value="~\bin"/> </searchPath> </postsharp> I have set tracing on but what is strange to me is that it appears to build to the temp directory, maybe this is my issue, i am unsure .. hence i do F5 ... Is it possible to name the Output directory and output file?? As you can see it is editing a DLL in the temp dir so IIS is no longer in control so it doesn't execute it ??? • My ashx stopped working (Works locally, but not online)

  i have a simple ASHX file that returns pictures upon request (mainly a counter), previously the code simply fetched pre-made pictures(already uploaded and available) and sent them to the requester.. i just modified the code,so it would take a base picture, do some modifications on it, save it to the server, then serve it to the user.. tested it locally and it worked like a charm. however when i uploaded the code to my hosting service (Godaddy..) it didnt work. Can someone point the problem out to me? Note: ASHX worked with me before,so i know the web.config and IIS are handling them properly, however i think i am missing something ..
