  • Normalizing Item Names & Synonyms

    - by RabidFire
Consider an e-commerce application with multiple stores. Each store owner can edit the item catalog of his store. My current database schema is as follows: item_names: id | name | description | picture | common(BOOL) items: id | item_name_id | picture | price | description | picture item_synonyms: id | item_name_id | name | error(BOOL) Notes: error indicates a wrong spelling (eg. "Ericson"). description and picture of the item_names table are "globals" that can optionally be overridden by "local" description and picture fields of the items table (in case the store owner wants to supply a different picture for an item). common helps separate unique item names ("Jimmy Joe's Cheese Pizza" from "Cheese Pizza") I think the bright side of this schema is: Optimized searching & Handling Synonyms: I can query the item_names & item_synonyms tables using name LIKE %QUERY% and obtain the list of item_name_ids that need to be joined with the items table. (Examples of synonyms: "Sony Ericsson", "Sony Ericson", "X10", "X 10") Autocompletion: Again, a simple query to the item_names table. I can avoid the usage of DISTINCT and it minimizes number of variations ("Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10", "Sony Ericsson - Xperia X10", "Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson") The down side would be: Overhead: When inserting an item, I query item_names to see if this name already exists. If not, I create a new entry. When deleting an item, I count the number of entries with the same name. If this is the only item with that name, I delete the entry from the item_names table (just to keep things clean; accounts for possible erroneous submissions). And updating is the combination of both. Weird Item Names: Store owners sometimes use sentences like "Harry Potter 1, 2 Books + CDs + Magic Hat". There's something off about having so much overhead to accommodate cases like this. This would perhaps be the prime reason I'm tempted to go for a schema like this: items: id | name | picture | price | description | picture (... with item_names and item_synonyms as utility tables that I could query) Is there a better schema you would suggested? Should item names be normalized for autocomplete? Is this probably what Facebook does for "School", "City" entries? Is the first schema or the second better/optimal for search? Thanks in advance! • Prevent some DataColumns in a DataTable from being bound to DataGridView

    - by Rajarshi
Is there any way I can specify that some columns in a DataTable will not be automatically bound to a DataGridView when I set the DataSource property of the DataGridView to the DataTable. For example, if I have a DataTable with columns as "Id, Name" then can I specify that Id column will not be shown in DataGridView? I know I can set some Visible property in DataGridView after it is bound, but can I specify in the DataTable/DataColumn itself?

  • Soften a colour border, maybe with a gradient, programmatically.

    - by ProfK
    I have a narrow header in corporate colour, bright red, with the content below on a just-off-white background. Ive tried softening the long line where these colours meet using border type divs with intermediate backgrounds, but I think I need the original type curved gradient 'area transitions'. I could copy the 1024px wide, and too narrow (vertically), header gif from their web site, and chop it up for eight border images, but that seems clumsy, and I'm looking for something I can apply anywhere, without needing images. I am able to do round borders in the x-y plane, but I'm curious as to how I can apply a gradient to any chosen colour transition. The extra divs I'm using as border elements above and below '#top-section' arose when I was toying with making many divs for one bordered element. This seemed the ultimate in border manipulation, sans code, but very tedious to spec in CSS and lay out a new border for each bordered element. <div id="topsection"> <div style="float: right; width: 300px; padding-right: 5px;"> <div style="font-size: small; text-align: right;"> Provantage Media Management System</div> <div style="font-size: x-small; text-align: right;"> <asp:LoginStatus ID="loginStatus" runat="server" LoginText="Log in" LogoutText="Log out" /> </div> </div> <span style="padding-left: 15px;">Main Menu</span><span id="content-title"> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="titlePlaceHolder" runat="server"> </asp:ContentPlaceHolder> </span> <div style="background-color: white; height: 2px;"> </div> <div style="background-color: white; height: 3px;"></div> And the CSS: #topsection { background-color: #EB2728; color: white; height: 35px; font-size: large; font-weight: bold; }

  • Is it possible to use .ASPXAUTH for my own logging system?

    - by J. Pablo Fernández
For a web application I switched from using ASP.NET Membership to using my own log in system which just does something like this to mark a user as logged in: Session["UserId"] = User.Id Is it possible to store the user id in the ASPXAUTH cookie, piggybacking on its encryption, instead of using the standard session? The goal is for the logged in state to last longer than a session and survive both browser and server restarts.

  • How do I replace values within a data frame with a string in R?

    - by Arturito
short version: How do I replace values within a data frame with a string found within another data frame? longer version: I'm a biologist working with many species of bees. I have a data set with many thousands of bees. Each row has a unique bee ID # along with all the relevant info about that specimen (data of capture, GPS location, etc). The species information for each bee has not been entered because it takes a long time to ID them. When IDing, I end up with boxes of hundred of bees, all of the same species. I enter these into a separate data frame. I am trying to write code that will update the original data file with species information (family, genus, species, sex, etc) as I ID the bees. Currently, in the original data file, the species info is blank and is interpreted as NA within R. I want to have R find all unique bee ID #'s and fill in the species info, but I am having trouble figuring out how to replace the NA values with a string (e.g. "Andrenidae") Here is a simple example of what I am trying to do: rawData<-data.frame(beeID=c(1:20),family=rep(NA,20)) speciesInfo<-data.frame(beeID=seq(1,20,3),family=rep("Andrenidae",7)) rawData[rawData$beeID == 4,"family"] <- speciesInfo[speciesInfo$beeID == 4,"family"] So, I am replacing things as I want, but with a number rather than the family name (a string). What I would eventually like to do is write a little loop to add in all the species info, e.g.: for (i in speciesInfo$beeID){ rawData[rawData$beeID == i,"family"] <- speciesInfo[speciesInfo$beeID == i,"family"] } Thanks in advance for any advice! Cheers, Zak EDIT: I just noticed that the first two methods below add a new column each time, which would cause problems if I needed to add species info multiple times (which I typically do). For example: rawData<-data.frame(beeID=c(1:20),family=rep(NA,20)) Andrenidae<-data.frame(beeID=seq(1,20,3),family=rep("Andrenidae",7)) Halictidae<-data.frame(beeID=seq(1,20,3)+1,family=rep("Halictidae",7)) # using join library(plyr) rawData <- join(rawData, Andrenidae, by = "beeID", type = "left") rawData <- join(rawData, Halictidae, by = "beeID", type = "left") # using merge rawData <- merge(x=rawData,y=Andrenidae,by='beeID',all.x=T,all.y=F) rawData <- merge(x=rawData,y=Halictidae,by='beeID',all.x=T,all.y=F) Is there a way to either collapse the columns so that I have one, unified data frame? Or a way to update the rawData rather than adding a new column each time? Thanks in advance!

  • LINQ entity query performance

Hi all, I have a silly question. I would like to know if there is performance deference in these two quries: var cObject = from cust in entities.Customer where cust.id == cid select cust; and var cObject = entities.Customer.First( c=> c.id == cid); My query return only one record as I am querying with the primary key. But do they make any difference?

  • Is this a legitimate implementation of a 'remember me' function for my web app?

    - by user246114
Hi, I'm trying to add a "remember me" feature to my web app to let a user stay logged in between browser restarts. I think I got the bulk of it. I'm using google app engine for the backend which lets me use java servlets. Here is some pseudo-code to demo: public class MyServlet { public void handleRequest() { if (getThreadLocalRequest().getSession().getAttribute("user") != null) { // User already has session running for them. } else { // No session, but check if they chose 'remember me' during // their initial login, if so we can have them 'auto log in' // now. Cookie[] cookies = getThreadLocalRequest().getCookies(); if (cookies.find("rememberMePlz").exists()) { // The value of this cookie is the cookie id, which is a // unique string that is in no way based upon the user's // name/email/id, and is hard to randomly generate. String cookieid = cookies.find("rememberMePlz").value(); // Get the user object associated with this cookie id from // the data store, would probably be a two-step process like: // // select * from cookies where cookieid = 'cookieid'; // select * from users where userid = 'userid fetched from above select'; User user = DataStore.getUserByCookieId(cookieid); if (user != null) { // Start session for them. getThreadLocalRequest().getSession() .setAttribute("user", user); } else { // Either couldn't find a matching cookie with the // supplied id, or maybe we expired the cookie on // our side or blocked it. } } } } } // On first login, if user wanted us to remember them, we'd generate // an instance of this object for them in the data store. We send the // cookieid value down to the client and they persist it on their side // in the "rememberMePlz" cookie. public class CookieLong { private String mCookieId; private String mUserId; private long mExpirationDate; } Alright, this all makes sense. The only frightening thing is what happens if someone finds out the value of the cookie? A malicious individual could set that cookie in their browser and access my site, and essentially be logged in as the user associated with it! On the same note, I guess this is why the cookie ids must be difficult to randomly generate, because a malicious user doesn't have to steal someone's cookie - they could just randomly assign cookie values and start logging in as whichever user happens to be associated with that cookie, if any, right? Scary stuff, I feel like I should at least include the username in the client cookie such that when it presents itself to the server, I won't auto-login unless the username+cookieid match in the DataStore. Any comments would be great, I'm new to this and trying to figure out a best practice. I'm not writing a site which contains any sensitive personal information, but I'd like to minimize any potential for abuse all the same, Thanks

  • Error implementing Dynamic Tab with ListView within each Tab - Tabs don't show up

    - by Jon
I am trying to create a dyanmic tab application that has tabs on the left for each type of Food (e.g. Pasta, Dairy, etc. including those dynamically defined by user) and for each tab, have a listview connected to a SQLite database that updates. This is in the onCreate method: setContentView(R.layout.foodCabinet_layout); dbHelper = new FoodStorageDBHelper(this); dbHelper.open(); Cursor foodTypes = dbHelper.getAllFoodTypes(); ArrayList<String> typeOfFood = new ArrayList<String>(); typeOfFoods.add(foodTypes.getString(1)); while(foodTypes.moveToNext()){ typeOfFoods.add(foodTypes.getString(1)); } final TabHost tbh = (TabHost)findViewById(R.id.food_tabhost_cabinet); tbh.setup(); for(final String s : typeOfFood){ TabSpec nts = tbh.newTabSpec(s); nts.setIndicator(s.replace('_', ' ')); nts.setContent(new TabHost.TabContentFactory(){ public View createTabContent(String tag) { ListView foodCabinetLV = new ListView(FoodCabinet.this); Cursor mCursor = dbHelper.getAllFoodsWithType(s); // Create an array to specify the fields we want to display in the list (only TITLE) String[] from = new String[]{FoodStorageDBHelper.KEY_NAME, FoodStorageDBHelper.KEY_YEAR,FoodStorageDBHelper.KEY_RANK}; // and an array of the fields we want to bind those fields to (in this case just text1) int[] to = new int[]{R.id.childname,R.id.childyear,R.id.childrank}; // Now create a simple cursor adapter and set it to display SimpleCursorAdapter notes = new SimpleCursorAdapter(FoodCabinet.this, R.layout.food_row, mCursor, from, to); foodCabinetLV.setAdapter(notes); startManagingCursor(mCursor); foodCabinetLV.setOnItemClickListener( new AdapterView.OnItemClickListener() { public void onItemClick(AdapterView arg0, View arg1, int arg2, long arg3) { Intent i = new Intent(); i.setClass(arg0.getContext(), EditFoodDialog.class); i.putExtra(FoodStorageDBHelper.KEY_ROWID, Long.toString(arg3)); startActivityForResult(i, LoadFoodOrganizer.ACTIVITY_EDIT); } }); return foodCabinetLV; } }); } For some reason, it doesn't show anything... it's a blank screen. Any help would be very much appreciated. Let me know! Thanks! Jon
