• Creating a local CDMA or GSM network?

  I am developing a number of different mobile applications for a number of different mobile devices and I want to quickly test in a local development environment. I was wondering if it is possible (with some sort of hardware) to set up a local desktop CDMA / GSM base station for testing devices over a local personal cellular network. The range does not have to be very far. The alternative is purchasing a SIM card and plans for various carriers but not all carriers/network types are available in our area. I'm sure I had seen some sort of desktop device that would let you setup local networks for development/testing purposes but can't seem to find it. Thanks.

• Best way to order menu items injected by an IoC/plugin Framework

  One of the common things I've seen done in applications built on IoC/plugin frameworks is to add commands to menus or toolbars from the dynamically loaded plugins. For example, the application's default plugins supply actions like "New, Open, Save" that show up in the context menu for a certain item in the workspace. A new plugin may add "Mail, Post, Encrypt" commands, but where do those commands show up in relation to "New, Open, Save"? How can the application that is loading components through IoC impose order on the items that get injected? Does it require metadata from the plugins that give a hint on how to group or order the items? Does it use a config file of previously known menu names (or ids) to define the order (seems a little weak to me)? Or are "unknown" plugins treated as second class citizens and always get dumped into sub menus? Something I've never even imagined (which I'm hoping to see in the answers)

• Writing a custom auth system (like the default django auth system), use it to generate tables in DB

  Hay all, I've been reading up on middleware and how to use it with a context object. I want to write a simple middleware class which i can use on my own applications, it will essentially be a cut down version of the django one. The problem i seem to have is that if i have INSTALLED_APPS = ('django.contrib.my_auth') in the settings file, all is well. I've also added MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES = ('django.contrib.my_auth.middleware.MyAuthMiddleware') in it and everything is fine. My question is, how would i make my middleware automatically generate tables from a models.py module, much like how the django auth does when i run manage.py syncdb? thanks

• Running Ruby app on Apache

  I have been learning Ruby lately, and I want to upload a test web application to my server. But I can't figure out how to get it to run on my shared hosting. My Hosting Details Shared Hosting with JustHost (see here for list of features) OS: Linux Apache: 2.2.11 cPanel: 11.25.0-STABLE No SSH access. Can install Ruby Gems. Can't install Apache modules. Can "Manage Ruby on Rails Applications" through cPanel. Mongrel gem is installed. I built the following simple HelloWorld Ruby Rack app using Sinatra: #!/usr/bin/ruby ruby require 'rubygems' require 'sinatra' get '/hi' do "Hello World!" end I just can can't figure out how to "start" the application. Do I need to tell Mongrel (or maybe Apache) that the application exists somehow? How do I start this app running? I am happy to provide more info if needed.

• Rails with DB2 and multiple schemas

  I have a 'legacy' DB2 database that has many other applications and users. Trying to experiment with a rails app. Got everything working great with the ibm_db driver. Problem is that I have some tables like schema1.products, schema1.sales and other tables like schema2.employees and schema2.payroll. In the ibm_db adapter connection, I specify a schema, like schema1 or schema2, and I can work within that one schema, but I need to be able to easily (and transparently) reference both schemas basically interchangeably. I don't want to break the other apps, and the SQL I would normally write against DB2 doesn't have any of these restrictions (schemas can be mixed in SQL against DB2 without any trouble at all). I would like to just specify table names as "schema1.products" for example and be done with it, but that doesn't seem to jive with the "rails way" of going about it. Suggestions?

  Starting with an app already in development, I have carried out the instructions in the iPhone Development Guide – Unit Testing Applications I can successfully include and use my App's classes in Application-style tests that run on the device, and output their results to the console. If I add the following line of code: STAssertTrue([viewController isKindOfClass:[LoginViewController class]], @"Top view controller is not LoginViewController"); The following build error is generated: Undefined symbols: "_OBJC_CLASS_$_LoginViewController", referenced from: __objc_classrefs__DATA@0 in LoginViewTest.o ld: symbol(s) not found collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I can provide more configuration information for the project and the Testing target, but the setup works file without the [LoginViewController class] line in the test source. Without that line, I can reference the class, use it's properties and send it messages successfully. Is there a linking build setting, or bundle loading option that is required when attempting to use an App class in this fashion? Or should I find another type of test to confirm that the class of an object is the expected one?

• Where to draw the line between efficiency and practicality

  I understand very well the need for websites' front ends to be coded and compressed as much as possible, however, I feel like I have more lax standards than others when it comes to practical applications. For instance, while I understand why some would, I don't see anything wrong with putting selectors in the <html> or <body> tags on a website with an expected small visitation rate. I would only do this for a cheap website for a small client, because I can't really justify the cost of time otherwise. So, that said, do you think it's okay to draw a line? Where do you draw yours?

  I have worked using different languages like C++/Java and currently AS3. Most applications were computer vision, and small 2D computer games. Most companies that I have worked for, they use Singletons in a language like AS3, to retrieve elements or classes in an easy way. Their problem is basically they needs some variables or to call other functions from other classes. In a language like AS3, there is no private constructor, and they write a hacky code to prevent new instances. In Java and C++ I also faced the situation that I need to use other classe's members or to call their functions in different classes. The question is, is there a better or another design, to let other classes interact with each others without using singletons? I feel that composition is the answer, but I need more detailed solutions or design suggestions.

• Finding final/effective web.config values (from inherited configurations)

  Are there any apps that can show the final configuration as applied to a particular application directory? What I'm picturing is something along the lines of FireBug's CSS viewer. Basically, it should show the equivalent single web.config file (as if you only had one), with all the values that apply to the directory in question, with each element (or even attribute) annotated with its source (the real .config file it came from). This would greatly help deploying applications into foreign environments (eg, customer sites) where they sometimes have strange configs, that add in global includes (eg, they put the include in machine.config, instead of the web.config for that app) or have allowOverride=false, etc.

• Is there any framework for Windows Forms, DB driven application development/prototyping?

  I'm writing simple database driven application, 80% of functionality is CRUD operations on about 15 tables. Coming from web development background I figured I can cover almost all of these CRUD cases with Rails scaffolding or say Django admins. So I started to look around for Rails/Django-like framework but for Windows Forms applications (ofcourse I understand that "rich client" application development significantly differs from a web development and I'm not expecting anything really similar). I was surprised that except for a variety of ORMs (let's call it Model-layer) it seems like I'm left with little choice when it comes to View-Controller layer. Maybe I'm missing something? PS. I evaluated Visual Studio DataSet Designer, but it seems to work only for the most simple cases, and requires additional code for any slightly nontrivial task.   As I see it most applications have a requirement for some form of validation and a number of fantastic free offerings are available (I.E., Fluent Validation, Validation Block, Spring, Castle Windsor, etc). My question is why does the .NET Framework not include any inbuilt validation libraries? I am aware the .NET Framework allows a developer the ability to build their own validation libraries/methods/etc. and anything provided as part of the .NET Framework would not always meet everyone’s needs. But surely something could have been included? ASP.NET has a minimal set of validators but these have not really been extended since .NET 2.0 was released.

• RavenDB - Can I create/query an index, from an application that doesn't share the CLR objects that were persisted?

  This post goes some way to answering this question (I'll include the answer later), but I was hoping for some further details. We have a number of applications that each need to access/manipulate data from Raven in their own way. Data is only written via the main web application. Other apps include batch-style tasks, reporting etc. In an attempt to keep each of these as de-coupled as possible, they are separate solutions. That being the case, how can I, from the reporting application, create indexes over the existing data, using my locally defined types? The answer from the linked question states As long as the structure of the classes you are deserializing into partially matches the structure of the data, it shouldn't make a difference. The RavenDB server doesn't care at all what classes you use in the client. You certainly could share a dll, or even share a portable dll if you are targeting a different platform. But you are correct that it is not necessary. However, you should be aware of the Raven-Clr-Type metadata value. The RavenDB client sets this when storing the original document. It is consumed back by the client to assist with deserialization, but it is not fully enforced It's the first part of that that I wanted clarification on. Do the object graphs for the docs on the server and types in my application have to match exactly? • Any Google API in perl working with OAuth

  Hello, I've looked at Net::Google, and 90% of the modules use AuthSub with a mandatory login/password. The right way for a web application to interact with Google applications on behalf of a customer is to use OAuth. That way, the authentication is done by Google, and the application does not know the user's password. This is supported by Net::Google::DocumentsList for example. Are you aware of modules that can work well with Picasa and Blogger, for example, using OAuth. The current Net::Google::PicasaWeb handles read-only queries, no add/remove/update actions.

• Can silverlight detect or communicate across browser instances?

  User starts up a silverlight application in their browser by navigating to a given URL. User then opens another browser and starts up the same silverlight application by navigating to the same URL. Can the second instance of the application detect that there is already an instance running on the same computer? Can it detect itself if both applications are running within the same browser instance? I would expect the answer to be 'no' but thought that i would ask it anyway. Otherwise i believe that i will have to setup a webservice and have each instance register itself and send requests to other instances from the same IP. does that sound reasonable?

  I am currently trying to upgrade a project of mine from .NET 3.5 to .NET 4.0 Everything was going really well, all code compiled, all tests passed. Then I hit a problem deploying to my stagomg environment. Suddenly my logins were no longer working. It seems my SHA1 hashed passwords are being hashed differently in .NET 4. I am using the SHA1CryptoServiceProvider: SHA1CryptoServiceProvidercryptoTransformSHA1 = new SHA1CryptoServiceProvider(); To test I created a new Visual Studio project with 2 console applications. The first targeted at .NET Framework 3.5 and the second at 4.0. I ran exactly the same hashing code in both and different results were produced. Why is this happening and how can I fix this? I obviously cannot go update all of my users passwords considering I do not know what they are. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Hello everyone! I am trying to use Netbeans 6.7 (on a Mac) to create C++ applications. I started out with the standard "Hello World," just to test if everything was working correctly. First try std and could not be found. So I tried reinstalling the developer tools on my Mac OS X disk. After that Netbeans updated its c++ compiler info, but still cannot find std or . Odder than this XCode seems to be working with C++ perfectly fine. Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

• Setup Hibernate Session Factory in Tomcat

  Hi All, I have been reading around the Hibernate core and I am still exploring some of its capability. It was mention in the docs that the SessionFactory is the heavyweight component of Hibernate thus it should be setup only once in a web application and in singleton. Each Session factory should pertain to one JDBC connection. Does anybody knows how to properly setup the session factory in tomcat web applications? Any links or tutorials would be better. Should I set it up as a contextlistener class also? Thanks.

  I am interested in getting a few Microsoft Certs and I am currently facing the option for .NET Framework app development language. My choices are C++, C#, and Visual Basic. I have some experience with Java and Visual Basic .NET but I honestly would like to know what the best would be for developing stand-alone applications in a workstation (local) environment. This is for my career and honestly, 90% of the developers are all experienced in the above three languages and I wanted to improve my chances of staying employed by learning/certifying myself on my own time.
