• Rails: periodically use HEAD to check for page changes

  I have a Rails app implementing a game, so it's expected that a player will leave a browser open at the game page. When player Alan takes an action himself, I use AJAX requests to update the game page Alan is viewing to reflect the new state. However, when another player (Bob) takes an action, I don't have (or want) a mechanism to push the change to Alan's view. I would like Alan's page to periodically poll the Rails server to find if there have been any changes since last reload, and to reload the page (either via a whole-page GET or an AJAX call) if not. In order to play nicely with caches and proxies, I'd like to do this by issuing a periodic HTTP HEAD request, get Rails to work out the timestamp of the last change (trivially available from my DB) and respond with that in the Last-Modified header; then have the client-side act on that timestamp. How can I go about doing this?

  Is it possible in Asp.NET MVC to proframmatically logout a user? I am aware that you can use: FormsService.SignOut(); But this refers to the context of the webpage making the request. I'm trying to prevent a user logging in twice. So if I call: MembershipUser membershipUser = Membership.GetUser(userName); if (membershipUser.IsOnline == true) { // log this user out so we can log them in again FormsService.SignOut(); } calling: FormsService.SignOut(); has no bearing on the context of the user say, with another webbrowser who is logged in already??

• RadioButtonList confirm SelectedIndexChange

  I have a RadioButtonList control and I would like to do a Javascript "confirm" when a user tries to change the index. Currently AutoPostBack is set to TRUE. I can, of course, just call __doPostBack from within a javascript function, etc. I tried a few things with jQuery but you have to worry about mousedown vs. click and then there is always the fact that you can click the checkbox label to select it, etc. Anyone have a nice solution for this? To be clear, I am looking for a way to prompt the user with a confirm box prior to their selection being made and triggering a postback.

  We have a WEb Service named, let's say Foo. So there is a Foo.svc file and a code behind Foo.svc.cs. We add a silverlight project and wish to use the Foo.svc services so we add a Service Reference and call it's namespace FooBar. This creates the following files : Reference.cs Reference.svcmap Foo.xsd Foo.disco configuration.svcinfo Foo.wsdl Also various *.datasource files. Over time we update the Foo.svc and add more Web Services (methods and interfaces) and the number of files in the FooBar directory is growing. I have 26 Foo(nn).xsd files in this directory - where nn = 1 to 26. My configuration.svcinfo is upto configuration91.svcinfo. My question is this? Do any of these files need to be version controlled? Can they all be deleted each time you do a build \ deploy (as long as you do an update service reference)?

• How do I test SendInput in c#

  How can I tell if my call to SendInput is working properly? I have a small snippet below, and the message never seems to get hit. SendInput() returns 1, and there's no errors, so I assume that the message is going out properly. • Cross domain cookie reading/setting cross browsers

  I know there are already a few threads available here on this subject but I want others' opinion on this. There are two ways to set/read the cross domain cookies: Creating IFrame on A.com pointing to a page on B.com which creates the cookie and pass that information by creating another IFrame on B.com side pointing to A.com, either using window.name or in location.href.hash A.com page makes a XHR/JSONP call to B.com web service/page that has the following headers and it also sets up the cookie and returns the value. AddHeader("p3p", "CP=\"IDC DSP COR ADM DEVi TAIi PSA PSD IVAi IVDi CONi HIS OUR IND CNT\"") As we don't have postMessage available across all the browsers, I believe we have to go with one of the cases mentioned above.   Hi, I have an object with a property called "name". This object has a sub object that has a property called "name" as well. Transaction.name Transaction.TransactionItem TransactionItem.name I bind Transaction object to a partial control as usual: Html.TextBox("name", Model.name)% Model is a Transaction object. And I bind TransactionItems: < if (Model.mtTransactionItem != null) { foreach (var item in Model.mtTransactionItem) { % <%= Ajax.ActionLink(item.name, "ShowItem", new { id = item.id }, new AjaxOptions { UpdateTargetId = "dialog-form" })% And when I update the one of the transaction items through an ajax call I pass the entire transaction object to the partial view. When I debug I check the Model.name property, and it has a proper value. But on the page shows the name of TransactionItem value instead of the name of Transaction value. What do I do wrong? I have checked this problem in MVC 1.0 and MVC 2.0 framework.

  When I call a SQL statement via JDBC on the DB2 and the statement fails, I catch an SQLException with the following message text: com.ibm.db2.jcc.a.nn: DB2 SQL Error: SQLCODE=-206, SQLSTATE=42703, SQLERRMC=O.METADATENSATZ, DRIVER=3.52.95 I tried an automatic translation of the message according to the error list published by IBM, but there are placeholders inside the messages referencing other elements of the exception. While looking for these elements inside the exception, I found the DB2ExceptionFormatter and tried to use it to access the missing elements. But here I stopped, because the DB2ExceptionFormatter gave me a clue: Error occurred while trying to obtain message text from server. Only message tokens are available. So my question is: What do I have to configure to get the correct messages from the DB2 server? If I can get a human readable message from the server, I could use it directly and wouldn't have to translate it by myself.

• How to find the right balance between "quick & dirty" and "nice & general" code?

  This is not a direct programming question, but a little help from the programming community would be appreciated. I am suffering from an overgeneralization disease. I can't stop spending valuable time with making my code most general and abstract. I could also call it the toolkit/library disease. I tend to turn every programming task into a general problem and try to "write a toolkit", that would work for many similar problems. I know it's a good thing in general, if there is enough time, but sometimes I should be writing a quick prototype and just can't seem to write the quick and dirty code that just works for the special case. I often get excited about an idea that makes the code more general and user-configurable and understimate the time it takes to actually implement it that way. Does anyone else have this experience? How can I force myself to find the right balance between "quick hack" and "nice solution"?

• JavaScript setTimeout setInterval within one function

  I think I might be overtired but I cannot for the life of me make sense of this, and I think it's due to a lack of knowledge of javascript var itv=function(){ return setInterval(function(){ sys.puts('interval'); }, 1000); } var tout=function(itv){ return setTimeout(function(){ sys.puts('timeout'); clearInterval(itv); }, 5500); } With these two functions I can call a=tout(itv()); and get a looping timer to run for 5.5 seconds and then exit, essentially. • WCF(HTTPS,UserName) calling by SilverLight

  Hello colleagues. I've created wcf service with transport security over HTTPS. Also I use UserName authentication as described at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc949025.aspx, so I can use my Membership,RoleProvider. When I work with this service with ASP.NET all is OK var client = new RegistratorClient(); client.ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["registratorLogin"]; client.ClientCredentials.UserName.Password = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["registratorPassword"]; But at my SilverLight appliation I can't do the same. When I try setup credntials and call wcf I get standard browser window with username and password. When I insert it SL application works well, but this message is so annoyed. I can't use clientCredentialType="Basic" at my SL config. What should I do for silence calling my WCF. Big thanks

• I never really understood: what is CGI?

  CGI is a Comman Gateway Interface. As the name says, it is a "common" gateway interface for everything. It is so trivial and naive from the name. I feel that I understood this and I felt this every time I encountered this word. But frankly, I didn't. I'm still confused. I am a PHP programmer. I did lot of web development. user (client) request for page --- webserver(-embedded PHP interpreter) ---- Server side(PHP) Script --- MySQL Server. Now say my PHP Script can fetch results from MySQL Server && MATLAB Server && Some other server. So, now PHP Script is the CGI? because its interface for the between webserver & All other servers? I don't know. Sometimes they call CGI, a technology & othertimes they call CGI a program or someother server. What exactly is CGI? Whats the big deal with /cgi-bin/*.cgi? Whats up with this? I don't know what is this cgi-bin directory on the server for. I don't know why they have *.cgi extensions. Why does Perl always comes in the way. CGI & Perl (language). I also don't know whats up with these two. Almost all the time I keep hearing these two in combination "CGI & Perl". This book is another great example CGI Programming with Perl Why not "CGI Programming with PHP/JSP/ASP". I never saw such things. CGI Programming in C this confuses me a lot. in C?? Seriously?? I don't know what to say. I"m just confused. "in C"?? This changes everything. Program needs to be compiled and executed. This entirely changes my view of web programming. When do I compile? How does the program gets executed (because it will be a machine code, so it must execute as a independent process). How does it communicate with the web server? IPC? and interfacing with all the servers (in my example MATLAB & MySQL) using socket programming? I'm lost!! They say that CGI is depreciated. Its no more in use. Is it so? What is its latest update? Once, I ran into a situation where I had to give HTTP PUT request access to web server (Apache HTTPD). Its a long back. So, as far as I remember this is what I did: Edited the configuration file of Apache HTTPD to tell webserver to pass all HTTP PUT requests to some put.php ( I had to write this PHP script) Implement put.php to handle the request (save the file to the location mentioned) People said that I wrote a CGI Script. Seriously, I didn't have clue what they were talking about. Did I really write CGI Script? I hope you understood what my confusion is. (Because I myself don't know where I'm confused). I request you guys to keep your answer as simple as possible. I really can't understand any fancy technical terminology. At least not in this case. EDIT: I found this amazing tutorial "CGI Programming Is Simple!" - CGI Tutorial Which explains the concepts in simplest possible way. I've only have one complaint about this tutorial. Just to make what ever he explained complete he should have shown the C code he used for generating response for those GET / POST requests. • Which OpenGL version is installed?

  I recently tried to lay my hands on OpenGL. Trying to grasp the API, I learned (or was given the advice) that I shouldn't use glBegin and glEnd anymore, since those are deprecated, but should start with OpenGL 3.1, instead. As I didn't know that the version used makes such a difference, I didn't pay much attention as to which version I actually have installed on my computer. And, as far as I can see, there is no glVersion or similar call that I could use to determine that version. I am using MinGW and I found the following lines in c:\MinGW\include\GL\gl.h: /* * Mesa 3-D graphics library * Version: 4.0 [more lines] */ [more lines] #define GL_VERSION_1_1 1 #if !defined(__WIN32__) #define GL_VERSION_1_2 1 #define GL_VERSION_1_3 1 #define GL_ARB_imaging 1 #endif [more lines] #define GL_VERSION 0x1F02 which, to me, indicates, that the installed version is as low as 1.3. Is this the case or how could I verify my suspicion? Also, where would I find a later version if I have 1.3 only?

• Boost.Python tutorial in Ubuntu 10.04

  I downloaded the latest version of Boost and I'm trying to get the Boost.python tutorial up and running on Ubuntu 10.04: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_43_0/libs/python/doc/tutorial/doc/html/python/hello.html I navigated to the correct directory, ran "bjam" and it compiled using default settings. I did not yet create a bjam config file. The compilation appears to have worked, but now I have no idea how to include the files in my python script. When I try to run the python hello world script, it gives me this error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "./hello.py", line 6, in <module> import hello_ext ImportError: libboost_python.so.1.43.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Anyone know what is going on?

  SwingWorker is used for the following purposes: For running long-running tasks in a different thread so as to prevent the GUI from being unresponsive For updating GUI with the results produced by the long-running task at the end of the task through done() method. For updating GUI from time to time with the intermediate results produced and published by the task with the help of publish() and process() methods. SwingUtilities.invokeLater() can perform the above tasks as follows: Instead of executing SwingWorker.execute() method from the EDT, we can execute ExecutorService.submit(new MyRunnable()) as it will also create another thread which can execute long-running task. For updating GUI at the end of the task, we can put code (written in done() method of case1) SwingUtilites.invokeLater(new RunnableToExecuteDoneMethodCode()) at the end of the task. For updating GUI in the middle of the task, we can put code (written in process() method of case1) SwingUtilites.invokeLater(new RunnableToExecuteProcessMethodCode()) at the place where we called publish() method in case1. I am asking this question because the problem specified in question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2797483/java-swingworker-can-we-call-one-swingworker-from-other-swingworker-instead-o/2824306#2824306 can be solved by SwingUtilities.invokeLater() but can't be solved with SwingWorker

• Horizontal "tab"ish scroll between views

  I'm interested in creating a horizontal scroll view that "snaps" to the viewed item, so only one item is ever shown at a time. The user can touch-drag left/right and will see previous/next views, switching to it if there's enough velocity. This interaction is exactly like what the new weather/news widget that comes with the Nexus One does for navigating between its "tabs". Are there any existing view widgets that do this? Update: found a copy of the news/weather widget (GenieWidget) and they seem to have implemented their own widget to accomplish this which they call com.google.android.apps.genie.geniewidget.ui.FlingableLinearLayout which is part of their own custom com.google.android.apps.genie.geniewidget.ui.TabView. As that source isn't available, that's not looking too hopeful a direction.

  What do people think of the best guidelines to use in an interface? What should and shouldn't go into an interface? I've heard people say that, as a general rule, an interface must only define behavior and not state. Does this mean that an interface shouldn't contain getters and setters? My opinion: Maybe not so for setters, but sometimes I think that getters are valid to be placed in an interface. This is merely to enforce the implementation classes to implement those getters and so to indicate that the clients are able to call those getters to check on something, for example.

• How to parse AMF data in Ruby?

  So I see that there are a few Rails plugins for serving AMF. However, is there a library that I can use in a Ruby environment to act as an AMF client: to read AMF data, and deserialize it into a Ruby object? If not, how could I best go about using tools built in other languages? I suppose I could write something in Python or Java or whatever, and call it from Ruby directly via backticks... but I'd first like to ensure that there isn't really any better option. Thanks!

• Ajax Div Maintain Height

  Greetings, I have a list of user comments on a page, with a next button which makes an Ajax call to get the second set of comments. The problem is, the height of the comments div temporarily becomes very small while the loading bar is in place. This makes the user need to scroll back down to see the new comments The issue can be seen at the bottom of this page by clicking "Next" comments. Is there a way to force the div to maintain its height through Javascript? I do not want to hard code the div height in case a page has 3 or less comments.

• Error 2006: "MySQL server has gone away" using Python, Bottle Microframework and Apache

  After accessing my web app using: - Python 2.7 - the Bottle micro framework v. 0.10.6 - Apache 2.2.22 - mod_wsgi - on Ubuntu Server 12.04 64bit; I'm receiving this error after several hours: OperationalError: (2006, 'MySQL server has gone away') I'm using MySQL - the native one included in Python. It usually happens when I don't access the server. I've tried closing all the connections, which I do, using this: cursor.close() db.close() where db is the standard MySQLdb.Connection() call. The my.cnf file looks something like this: key_buffer = 16M max_allowed_packet = 128M thread_stack = 192K thread_cache_size = 8 # This replaces the startup script and checks MyISAM tables if needed # the first time they are touched myisam-recover = BACKUP #max_connections = 100 #table_cache = 64 #thread_concurrency = 10 It is the default configuration file except max_allowed_packet is 128M instead of 16M. The queries to the database are quite simple, at most they retrieve approximately 100 records. Can anyone help me fix this? One idea I did have was use try/except but I'm not sure if that would actually work. Thanks in advance, Jamie
