Is the capability to overwrite functions in JavaScript strength or weakness?

I recently came across the following code (from liferay.js) when I was working with Liferay: .... if (!Liferay._ajaxOld) { Liferay._ajaxOld = jQuery.ajax; } if (Liferay._ajaxOld) { jQuery.ajax = function(options) { if (Liferay.Util) { options.url = Liferay.Util.getURLWithSessionId(options.url); } return Liferay._ajaxOld(options); }; } .... As you can see, the code above overwrites the function "jQuery.ajax" to modify "options.url". One may say this is a strength of the language since we can easily overwrite and customize existing functions. However, I would imagine this capability can easily lead to a problem. For instance, my code can overwrite the same function "jQuery.ajax" to modify "options.url" differently from the code above. As a result, any code that expect the behavior defined by "liferay.js" may no longer function as expected. I see this as a weakness of the language as it does not provide proper encapsulation. What are the consensus about this feature/capability of the language in the field?

MySQL can only log in as root, even after creating new users with their own database

Problem: I just set up a Debian Wheezy installation for testing, and installed the LAMP packages and PMA. I can log in as root with my pre-defined password, create/edit/delete both databases and users. The problem comes when I create a new user 'something', set a password for it, and grant it all privileges on a table 'something' (same as the username). Upon connecting, it denies access to the user. Details: Host: localhost using MySQL 5.5.24-8 Creating user: CREATE USER 'something'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY '***';GRANT USAGE ON *.* TO 'something'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY '***' WITH MAX_QUERIES_PER_HOUR 0 MAX_CONNECTIONS_PER_HOUR 0 MAX_UPDATES_PER_HOUR 0 MAX_USER_CONNECTIONS 0;CREATE DATABASE IF NOT EXISTSsomething;GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ONsomething.* TO 'something'@'%'; Checking privileges: GRANT USAGE ON *.* TO 'something'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY PASSWORD '*92F9DAF5F5129554509489FDB6A433510223C799'; Result: Access denied for user 'something'@'localhost' (using password: YES) More Info: I use this same exact procedure for the Squeeze distribution, and it works perfectly. Is there a chance it's because of Wheezy, or something else? I need to continue using Wheezy because of the updated packages (for this test server -- the others work fine), so 'just use Squeeze' is not an option. Note: I HAVE tried flush privileges; to no avail.

I have a object selection function by checking the mouse click and getting the relevant object. How ever there is a rare situation where if one object is partially behind the other then both objects are in the given area so im wondering how I can make the game know which one was selected, as currently my method does not know. Dynamic object creation with HashMap

I want to use a HashMap to dynamically create objects based on the key. I have a Random Map Generator that stores the maps in 3D Arrays of Type Integer[][][]. Upon creation of the actual map I iterate through this array and based on the Integer I want to create the right block. Example: Integer[][][] map ... map[6][6][6] = 3; 3 is a Earth-Block and now I want to initialize a new Block of this type and give it the right coordinates. Currently I store my Bindings from Integer to Class in a HashMap(Integer, String) and create my objects like that: int id = array[x][y][z]; String block_name = Blocks.map.get(id); Block block = (Block) Class.forName(block_name).newInstance(); block.setPosition(x,y,z); But I want to avoid newInstance() if possible. I've never worked that dynamically with Java before and I couldn't find a solution like changing the HashMap to (Integer, Class) or something. I just need to create a new Object based upon the Integer. Any ideas/solutions? Thanks in advance and have a wonderful day!

Interfaces: profit of using

First of all, my ubiquitous language is PHP, and I'm thinking about learning Java. So let me split my question on two closely related parts. Here goes the first part. Say I have a domain-model class. It has some getters, setters, some query methods etc. And one day I want to have a possibility to compare them. So it looks like: class MyEntity extends AbstractEntity { public function getId() { // get id property } public function setId($id) { // set id property } // plenty of other methods that set or retrieve data public function compareTo(MyEntity $anotherEntity) { // some compare logic } } If it would have been Java, I should have implemented a Comparable interface. But why? Polymorphism? Readbility? Or something else? And if it was PHP -- should I create Comparable interface for myself? So here goes the second part. My colleague told me that it is a rule of thumb in Java to create an interface for every behavioral aspect of the class. For example, if I wanted to present this object as a string, I should state this behaviour by something like implements Stringable, where in case of PHP Stringable would look like: interface Stringable { public function __toString(); } Is that really a rule of thumb? What benefits are gained with this approach? And does it worth it in PHP? And in Java?

Docking CDialogBar Horizontally with CToolbar [migrated]

I need to display a CToolbar (m_wndToolBar) and a CDialogBar (m_wndDlgBarSid1) horizontally (i.e. next to each other, not above one another). The parent frame is derived from CMDIFrameWnd. I've tried all sorts of variations to get this to work. While I can properly position the CDialogBar to the right of the CToolbar, I cannot persist the positioning, although the WINDOWPLACEMENT mechanism is working correctly (the registry is written on program exit); whenever the program is run, the CToolbar shows up docked left, and the CDialogBar shows up below it, also docked left. I'm using (perforce) MFC and Visual C++ 6.0. How to fix flicker when using Webkit transforms & transitions

I have a very simple demo working that uses Webkit transforms and transitions for smooth horizontal scrolling between 'panels' (divs). The reason I want to go this route as opposed to a Javascript driven system is that it's for the iPad and Javascript performance is quite poor, but the css transforms and transitions are smooth as silk. Sadly though, I'm getting a lot of flicker on the iPad with my Demo. You can see the demo here You'll need safari or and iPad to see it in action. I've never seen this happening in any of the demos for transforms and transitions so I'm hopeful that this is fixable. Anyway here's the code that powers the thing.... SQL CLR Assembly Error 80131051 when late binding to a registered C# COM .dll

I must have hit an unusual one, because I can't find any reference to this specific failing anywhere... Scenario: I have a legacy SQL function used to transform(encrypt) data. This function is called from within many stored procedures used by multiple applications. I say this, because the obvious answer of 'just call it from your code' is not really an option (or at least one I'd prefer not explore). The legacy function used sp_OA with an ActiveX dll on SQL2000 to perform its work. The new function is targeted at SQL2008 x64. I am ditching the sp_OA call in favor of CLR assembly; and am getting rid of the ActiveX dll and using a COM+ .dll (3rd party) to perform the same work. This 3rd party COM+ is required to be used based on spec given to me, so can't get rid of this piece either. Problem: After multiple attempts at getting this to work I have eliminated the following approaches 1) Create a Sql Assembly to call the local COM+ directly -- Can't do this as it requires a reference to System.EnterpriseServices. Including this requires that a whole slew of unsupported assemblies be registered which I don't want. The COM+ requires it's methods to be accessed via an Interface, so my attempts at late binding to it directly have not been successful (late binding would allow me to drop the unsupported references). 2) Create a Sql Assembly which references a C# class library that then calls the COM+. -- Same issue as #1; since the referenced dll uses System.EnterpriseServices and will be added as a dependency when referenced in the Sql Assembly, again trying to load all the unsupported libraries 3) Create a Sql Assembly which late binds to an ActiveX COM dll that calls the COM+. -- Worked in my dev environment, but can't go to x64 in production with ActiveX dll's written in VB6 (not to mention I hate backtracking anyway)... again failure... I am now onto an approach that is almost working, with of course one last hangup. I now have -a Sql Assembly that late binds to a C# COM dll, eliminating the need for including System.EnterpriseServices and eliminating the need to reference the C# COM in the SqlAssembly itself. The C# COM does reference System.EnterpriseServices to call the COM+, but since I am late binding to it from the SqlAssembly, I bypass the need for Sql to actually load them as referenced assemblies. Works in debugger.. Works on my dev box when the SqlAssembly dll is referenced in a test console app and called directly Installs to Sql2008 just fine Executing the actual UDF works, but returns no data due to a failure reporting from the late bound dll! So the SqlAssembly is instanciated just fine. It actually fails on it's late binding to the C# COM, which is working from a test console app on the same machine. It appears to be a difference in behavior based on whether called from within the SQL UDF or not. Since it is working on the same box from my console app, I am assuming it's on the SQL side. My steps to install were. --Install the COM+ dll and ensure it can be called successfully (as from with in the console app) --Register the C# COM dll (which calls the COM+) and get it to the GAC (again proofed to be working from console app) --Create my Assymetric Key CREATE ASYMMETRIC KEY SqlCryptoKey FROM EXECUTABLE FILE = 'D:\SqlEx.dll' CREATE LOGIN SqlExLogin FROM ASYMMETRIC KEY SqlExKey GRANT UNSAFE ASSEMBLY TO SqlExLogin GO --Add the assembly CREATE ASSEMBLY SqlEx FROM 'D:\SqlEx.dll' WITH PERMISSION_SET = UNSAFE; GO --Create the function CREATE FUNCTION dbo.f_SqlEx( @clearText [nvarchar](512) ) RETURNS nvarchar(512) WITH EXECUTE AS CALLER AS EXTERNAL NAME SqlEx.[SqlEx.SqlEx].Ex GO With all that done, I can now call my function SELECT dbo.f_SqlEx('test') But get this error in the event log... Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {F69D6320-5884-323F-936A-7657946604BE} failed due to the following error: 80131051. I can't really provide direct code examples, due to internal security implications; but all the code itself seems to work, I am suspecting perms or something of the like... I just find it odd that I can't find any reference to error 80131051. If someone out there believe some 'indirect' code samples will help, I will be happy to provide. Any assistance is appreciated.

Previously on other sites, there have no problems or complaints. However, with the recent complaints , I suspect that the culprit is my simple jQuery codes since the sites that have been reported have been created recently and incorporated with jQuery features. Understanding try..catch in Javascript

I have this try and catch problem. I am trying to redirect to a different page. But sometimes it does and some times it doesnt. I think the problem is in try and catch . can someone help me understand this. Specifically, I would start with say 146k of memory used, create 1000 objects of a class that just holds an integer instance variable and store each object into a table. The memory used is now 300k I would then exit, iterating through the table and setting each element in the table to nil. But would never get back the 146k, usually after this I am left using 210k or something similar. If I run the load sequence again during the same session, it does not exceed 300k so it is not a memory leak. I have tried creating 1000 integers in a table and setting these to nil, which does give me back 146k. In addition I've tried a simpler class file (Account2.lua) that doesn't rely on a class.lua. This still incurs memory fragmentation but not as much as the one that uses Class.lua Can anybody explain what is going on here? Passing GLatLng from array to Google

Hello All, To preface this, I am a complete programming amateur so this may be quite easily solved. As is though, it is frustrating me to no end. Basically, I have a database of Venue Names with GLat and GLng (other stuff too) that I am pulling down to my website based on a geolocated search. The javascript that I have pulls in a formatted subset of the database, dumps the glat and glng into an array and is supposed to take those points and plot out several markers each with an info window containing the details behind each marker. For some reason, the marker geodata is not being populated and/or is not being passed. The array is declared using [] and will not work when normally declared using (). It only brings up a map with the first value in the array and goes blank if i try to manually input later entries. There is a large block of commented out code relating to directions generation. That code worked for some reason. If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong in rewriting it to map the markers and not give directions, please tell me. Re-opening closed dialog puts it in the start position after moving it

I'm using multiple instances of the JQuery-UI dialog along with draggable and resizable. Whenever I drag or resize one of the dialog boxes, the position and dimensions of the current box are saved to a database and then loaded the next time the page opens. This is working well. However, when I close a dialog box and re-open it using a button, jQuery sets the position of the box back to its original location in the center of the screen. Furthermore, I use a show effect to slide the box off to the left on closing and in from the left on re-opening. I found two ways to update its position when the slide in animation is done, however, it still slides into the center of the screen, and I have yet to find a way to get it to slide in towards the location it is supposed to have. EDIT: Forgot - this issue ONLY happens when I use my UpdatePos function to set the location of a box (i.e. on page load). When I drag a box with my mouse, close it, and re-open it, everything works. So I'm guessing there's one more storage location for the box' position that I'm missing here... The position() results for $box.position() or $box.dialog().position() do not change during this debugging section. Maybe this will help someone here - I'm still out of ideas here... ... and I just discovered that when I drag the item around myself, then close and re-open it, it is very unpredictable. Sometimes, it will end up in the correct location horizontally, but not vertically. Sometimes, it will end up back in the center of the screen...

high tweet status IDs causing failed to open stream errors?

Erg. Starting in the past few days high tweet IDs (at least, it appears it's ID related, but I suppose it could be some recent change in the api returns) are breaking my code. At first I tried passing the ID as a string instead of an integer to this function, and I thought this worked, but in reality it was just the process of uploading the file from my end. In short, a php script generates these function calls, and when it does so, they fail. If I download the php file the call is generated into, delete the server copy and re-upload the exact same file without changing it, it works fine. Does anyone know what could be causing this behavior? Below is what I suspect to be the most important part of the individual files that are pulling the errors. strange behavior while including a class in php

I'm experiencing a strange behavior with PHP. Basically I want to require a class within a PHP script. I know it is straight forward and I did it before but when I do so, it change the behavior of my jquery (1.8.3) ajax response. I'm running a wamp setup and my PHP version is 5.4.6. I noticed then if I just paste the Container class on the top of the handler.php file, everything works properly but it kind of defeat what I try to achieve. I tried different way to include the Container class but it seem to be than the issue is specific to this current scenario. Backbone.js Model validation fails to prevent Model from saving

I have defined a validate method for a Backbone.js Model. The problem is that even if validation fails (i.e. the Model.validate method returns a value) the post/put request is still sent to the server. This contradicts what is explained in the Backbone.js documentation. I cannot understand what I am doing wrong. I am in the process of rewriting an old application. I guess that maybe the encryption / decryption process uses the application name / file or something and therefore means I can not open it. Does anyone have an idea as to: A) Be able explain why this isn't working? B) Offer a solution that would allow me to be able to open files that were created with the legacy application and be able to convert them please? Nunc tristique tempus lectus. <div class="edit" style="display:none"> <textarea style="height:80px; width:100%" class="tinymce" name="" rows="8" runat="server" id="txtans">answer text goes here </textarea> </div> <input id="Button1" type="button" value="edit" onclick="showEditFields();" /> </p> </form> </body> so when I click on the "edit" button available on Default2.aspx ,the textarea with tinymce should appear and I can add as many tabs as I want from Default1.aspx by clicking on Add Tab(anchor) which loads multiple tabs with content from Default2.aspx.After adding these multiple tabs ,if I check to see whether all the textareas are with tinymce,I noticed that only the 1st tab contains textarea with tinymce and in all the other tabs tinymce doesnt show up ,simply the normal text area appears. Could someone please help me with this? Thanks.
