This review closes 27 October. JSR 339,  JAX-RS 2.0: The Java API for RESTful Web Services, has published a Public Review. This review closes 12 November.     This is a nifty small tool that i'm using quite often in scripts that stop something and do some tasks afterwards and i don't want to hassle around with the contract file system. It's not a cool feature, but it's useful and relatively less known. An example: As i wrote long ago, you should never use kill -9 because often the normal kill is intercepted by the application and it starts to do some clean up tasks first before really stopping the process. So just because kill has returned, it doesn't imply that the process is away. How do you wait for process to disappear? (more)

  • NetBeans 7.0.1 now in RC

    What would a GlassFish release be without a NetBeans version to go with it? The NetBeans team has released the NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 RC 1 which will bring full compatibility with JDK 7 as well as GlassFish 3.1.1 support (this particular RC ships with the soft code freeze build of GlassFish 3.1.1). This 7.0.1 RC 1release also includes numerous bugfixes and performance improvements across all areas and is available from the usual download page and the final version of NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 is expected in late July (once JDK 7 has shipped would be an educated guess). Note that if you're an existing NetBeans 7.0 user you'll be offered with updates to your existing install via the Update Center once 7.0.1 final ships.

  • Rewritten NetBeans Platform Feed Reader Tutorial

    The next tutorial that has been thoroughly restructured and rewritten is: NetBeans Platform Feed Reader Tutorial Originally written by Rich Unger, it was one of the very first NetBeans Platform tutorials that ever existed. In this particular rewrite, the entire structure of the tutorial has changed, in an attempt to make the flow more "bite size", rather than a big lump. Also, thanks to recent NetBeans Platform changes, there are no Bundle files anymore, all Strings are declared via @Messages annotations. Theoretically, the browser in the application could be a JavaFX WebView, though the browser part of the application isn't a central theme of the tutorial, hence only a reference is made to the JavaFX alternative.     Java Development Kit 7 Update 10 (JDK 7u10) release is now live! You can download it from Java SE Downloads page. The Java™ SE Development Kit 7, Update 10 Release Notes contains information about this release. The highlights of this release include: New Certified System Configurations - Mac OS X 10.8 and Windows 8 Security Feature Enhancements: The ability to disable any Java application from running in the browser. This mode can be set in the Java Control Panel or (on Microsoft Windows platform only) using a command-line install argument. New dialogs to warn you when the JRE is insecure (either expired or below the security baseline) and needs to be updated. The documentation at Setting the Level of Security for the Java Client and Java Control Panel explains these features in detail.

  • Lost in Code?

    Sometimes you're coding and you find yourself forgetting your context. For example, look at this situation: The cursor is on line 52. Imagine you're coding there and you're puzzling on some problem for some time. Wouldn't it be handy to know, without scrolling up (and then back down again to where you were working), what the method signature looks like? And does the method begin two lines above the visible code or 10 lines? That information can now, in NetBeans iDE 7.3 (and already in the 7.3 Beta) very easily be ascertained, by putting the cursor on the closing brace of the code block: As you can see, a new vertical line is shown parallel to the line numbers, connecting the end of the method with its start, as well as, at the top of the editor, the complete method signature, together with the number of the line on which it's found. Very handy. Same support is found for other file types, such as in JavaScript files.

    Another Mercurial release, another broken extension. Mercurial 2.3 breaks hgforest ... once more. Of course, with open source, the notion of backwards compatibility is sometimesoften left as an exercise for the curious readers of said source code, so until someone gets around to fix up hgforest ... once more, to keep up with Mercurial's churn, one way to get hgforest working again is to downgrade to Mercurial 2.2.3, for example. In MacPorts, assuming you have installed Mercurial 2.2.3 before, and it was updated to the broken Mercurial 2.3 version, it's pretty easy to get back to a working state: sudo port deactivate [email protected]_1sudo port activate [email protected]_0

  • JEditorPane Code Completion (Part 2)

No need to create a fake Java file, unlike what I said in part 1, no need to depend on all the Java Editor modules, if you use DialogBinding.bindComponentToDocument, instead of DialogBinding.bindComponentToFile: public final class CountryEditorTopComponent extends TopComponent {     public CountryEditorTopComponent() {         initComponents();         setName(Bundle.CTL_CountryEditorTopComponent());         setToolTipText(Bundle.HINT_CountryEditorTopComponent());         EditorKit kit = CloneableEditorSupport.getEditorKit("text/plain");         jEditorPane1.setEditorKit(kit);         DialogBinding.bindComponentToDocument(jEditorPane1.getDocument(), 0, 0, jEditorPane1);         jEditorPane1.setText("Egypt");     } The above requires a dependency on Editor Library 2, which is where DialogBinding is found. Aside from that, you need all the dependencies required by the Code Completion API, as described in the Code Completion tutorial on the NetBeans Platform Learning Trail. Once you've done that, go to the Project Properties dialog of the application and then in the "ide" cluster, include "Plain Editor" and "Plain Editor Library". I.e., two additional JARs only. These two are needed because you've set the MIME type to "text/plain", which is needed because DialogBinding expects the JEditorPane to have a MIME type. And now everything works. Press Ctrl-Space in your JEditorPane and, because your CompletionProvider is registered in "text/x-dialog-binding" (via the annotation on CompletionProvider), your completion items are displayed. (The only MIME type for binding a document to a component, by default, is "text/x-dialog-binding", which means the next step is for someone to figure out how to support multiple different of such MIME types, since each JEditorPane in your application is likely to require its own specific code completion support.) I think this is a really workable solution for real scenarios where JEditorPanes in NetBeans Platform applications require code completion.

  • Java EE @ NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium Des Moines

    As some of you may be aware I recently joined the well-respected US based No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour. The NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium was held August 8 - 10 in Des Moines. The Des Moines show is one of the smaller ones but still was good overall. It is one of the few events of it's kind that take place this part the country so it is extremely important. I had five talks total over two days, more or less back-to-back. I had decent attendance for all my sessions and had many of the same folks staying for multiple sessions which is always a very good sign. I did talks on Java EE 7/Java EE 8, WebSocket, the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints, JavaScript + Java EE and NoSQL + Java EE.
