• Cannot pass the login screen after upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10

  I just performed the upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The updater downloaded all packages but a few ones that the system said were already installed. When asked for it, I chose to install the new maintainer's version of grub. Now after that my system start up to the login page, some images won't load. Moreover, after I try to login, the graphical instance does not load, it just sits there showing the mouse pointer and nothing else.

• Where can I find comprehensive documentation on the various aspects of Linux?

  Whenever a problem pops up in my use of Linux (full time user for 6 years) I start by googling. The simplest (or most common) issues will usually be cleared right away. If it's not in one of those two categories the advise I find tend to be wrong, misguided, obsolete, and if you ask a question here on "ask" you risk being "duplicated" to some superficially similar question. Some issues have haunted me for years until I suddenly hit on the actual developer's documentation (or equivalent) which in a few lines explains how to solve my issue, the correct and consistent way. Whenever that happens I'm always kicking myself: why didn't I just go here to begin with? And the obvious answer is: "I had no idea this was what I was looking for". And for the issues that this hasn't yet happened I'm banging my head: "This ought to be either straight forward or someone tell me it's not doable" So my question is: Are there projects out there trying to collect or list this documentation in a searchable/browseable way. I know there are many very good "if you want this do that" tutorials on Ubuntu but I'm looking for actual documentation. That either are or could be collected in one place (at least conceptually) so that search for information could start in one place. I'm fully aware this is a broad question but if you approach it as: Does gnome have a comprehensive documentation project - where do I find it? Does Ubuntu have a comprehensive documentation project - where do i find it? For example: how exactly does the mime-type association work in Ubuntu and in xubuntu? How exactly are menus created (in Ubuntu: quicklists, xubuntu/gnome: the main menu) How exactly does the rendering process work for compiz/x? (I'm having this issue where windows randomly stops updating until somehow forced to resume (I guess). So for instance where do I look for logs that may indicate the problem. How may I change randr or other settings that may influence this issue. So my point is to organize exact documentation or preferably to find projects that do this already. Thanks! If answers to this question get me started I'm hoping to collect such a list.

• Virtualbox Update

  Mac OSX - Snow leopard is host OS and Ubuntu-10.1 and windows xp are guest OS. I recently updated vittualbox to 4.1.10 Ubuntu did not boot immediately, it did an entire system scan and took about 2 hrs to boot. Now it boots regularly but it does not find wireless internet connection, even connecting cable does not help. However internet works great in window xp. I am totally lost, I would appreciate your help

• Can't access external USB storage after updating to 12.10

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 after Windows failed me and Samsung got a bit pissy about providing any help. I then upgraded to 12.10 after a week or two and suddenly my external USB devices no longer work. The same devices I plugged in are no longer recognised. As I say, I'm only a user of Ubuntu for a fortnight, so any advice and directions to very simple instructions, would be appreciated greatly. I've seen this asked elsewhere, but the advice was to ask again if you needed clarification.

• YouTube shows "Missing Plug-in" in window for 12.04

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit, I have installed Ubuntu Restricted Extras, configured Medibuntu, installed Synaptic Package, Adobe Flash Player which came installed with Chromium which is the browser I installed. Also files to play encrypted DVDs. I haven't been able to locate the flashplayer file in /usr/lib folders which I assume should be there. Don't know if this is why I can't see videos at YouTube. Not sure where else to look.

My idea is that it could depend by the NAT. Because my Windows system is connected using the wireless but in the virtualized Ubuntu I see that I am connected to a "wired network". So I think that the NAT virtualize a network adapter (or something like this) and that 192.168.15.2 could be the ip address of this network adapter... But it seems strange to me because, as you can see in the previous ipconfig output the VmWare network adapter addresses are: 192.168.129.1 and 192.168.15.1. So I have also 2 others doubts: 1) What device represents the 192.168.15.2 ip address that the virtualized Ubuntu see as Default gateway but that is not my router? 2) What exactly do the two VmWare network adapter that I have configured into my Windows 8 system?   I got some problem installing rails on Ubuntu 12.04. I have rails working on my Ubuntu for a little time. But for some reason I uninstall rails. When I decided to install it again with sudo gem install rails . The command rails -v doesn't work. When I run the command sudo gem install rails there is no error occurring just a message that saying: Successfully installed rails-3.2.6 I look at the folder /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rails-3.2.6 and it is completely empty? I wonder how I can fix this problem?

• How can I reverse connect with vncconnect or vncconfig with ubuntu as the server?

  On a windows machine I am running: "listening VNC viewer" From a Ubuntu machine, I need to reverse connect to the windows machine but it does not seem to be working. I was able to make it work between 2 windows machines, but I need it to work with Ubuntu as the server as well. I tried vncconnect -display $DISPLAY 192.168.1.134:5500 and nothing happens. So instead I tried vncconfig but I get the message : "No VNC extension on display :0.0" Any ideas? If this is the wrong site just send me a comment I'll close the question.

I want to compact this VHD (The real size is 50 GB, 360 GB on the disk). But I can not do this, because the Ubuntu file system is not NTFS. What do I need (gparted, sdelete, ...) for solving this problem? The main problem is that the filesystem is not NTFS, but ext4.

  Hello: I've got a Gentoo box that I'm interested in switching over to an Ubuntu box. I currently have the partitions laid out using a mixture of RAID (mdadm) and LVM2, as specified in this document [1]. Ideally I'd like to just wipe out the non /home partition, as it's got data I'd like to keep. Is it possible to reuse the current setup, or do I need to restart? vgdisplay, vgchange -a y, etc don't yield any results from the Ubuntu LiveCD, and I'm wary to run any commands that might wipe my data. • Ubuntu Server login not recognizing the keyboard after entering username.

  I'm having similar issues with logging into ubuntu server. chief problem is that once I enter my user name & hit enter, I can't enter anything ffor my password - it won't accept any keystrokes until I press Ctrl+any key. Once I've pressed Ctrl+ any key, I'm able to type again, but have never been able to enter any more than 3 characters before the 60 sec time limit. This problem is present on fresh installs of both 10.04 & 9.10. Part of the problem is lkely to be my antique pc which is an old Emachines Trigems I850 based mbd and an equally ancient Nvidia 4x AGP video card. Initially I was going to install Ubuntu 10.10, but with ORCA running with both screen reader and full screen magnification crashed the system & smoked a stick of Rambus memory. Is there any fix to this problem? Jeff

  I've had this problem for a long time and can't find a solution. I switch between the 3 OSes all the time and use a 1TB USB Drive to do so. I can't seem to find a format that is compatible across all systems that handles large files (at least 8-9 GB). Does anyone have a solution for this? Recently I've tried exFat but that messes up the filesystem when trying to read on windows after adding files from Ubuntu (using the fuse driver). The OSes currently I'm using are Windows Vista/7, Mac OS X (10.6.5) and Ubuntu 10.10

I have done this without any problems before but since I got this new drive I have been having issues. When I first load up Ubuntu the drive mounts and runs fine, after an unspecified amount of time i start getting Input/Output errors when accessing the drive. When I goto the Disk Utility I get a message stating the drive is "Unknown or Unused", If I disconnect and reconnect the drive or reboot everything is fine again. There's no errors coming up with S.M.A.R.T and it seems to work fine while under windows. Any thoughts?

But I can't determine how to configure/setup for send an email to external smtp like gmail, yahoo. The most worst thing i can't determine how to use sasl, because i am not using SSL so it is not worthy for my domain.   I am a long time Fedora user (since Fedora 6). Previously I have used Gentoo (for 2 years) and Slackware (for 5 years). The thing I liked about Fedora is frequency of package updates + great community. But lately I have noticed that Fedora is becoming too cutting-edge, nay, bleeding-edge. They changed the DNS client to be strict, without any warning, which broke some of their own packages for two Fedora releases. More critically, their LVM modules are not compatible across Fedora 12, 13, 14 (sometimes). Ubuntu is nicely polished but seems too stable for my liking. Some of the user-space applications are two major version numbers behind (even in testing or unstable or whatever they call it). Is there any Linux distro that has the stability of Ubuntu in kernel space and the bleeding edge in applications (especially harmless applications like, say, Stellarium)?

• Cant correctly install Lazarus

  I have a little problem with installing and running Lazarus. I just upgrade ubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10. When i had 13.04, i could install lazarus without any problems, but in 13.10 lazarus magicaly dissapeared, and when i tried install it from ubuntu software center, it said something like in my software resources lazarus-ide-0.9.30.4 doesnt exist. After some research on net i tried delete all files from earlier installations, download deb packages from sourceforge and install them, but when i want to instal fpc-src, error shows up with output: (Reading database ... 100% (Reading database ... 239063 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking fpc-src (from .../Stiahnut/Lazarus/fpc-src.deb) ... dpkg: error processing /home/richi/Stiahnut/Lazarus/fpc-src.deb (--install): trying to overwrite '/usr/share/fpcsrc/2.6.2/rtl/nativent/tthread.inc', which is also in package fpc-source-2.6.2 2.6.2-5 dpkg-deb (subprocess): decompressing archive member: internal gzip write error: Broken pipe dpkg-deb: error: subprocess <decompress> returned error exit status 2 dpkg-deb (subprocess): cannot copy archive member from '/home/richi/Stiahnut/Lazarus/fpc-src.deb' to decompressor pipe: failed to write (Broken pipe) when i started lazarus, it of course tell me that it cant find fpc compier and fpc sources. • Blank screen after installing nvidia restricted driver

  I have a new machine with a MSI N560GTX Ti Twin Frozr II/OC graphic card and MSI PH67A-C43 (B3) main board. If i install the current nvidia restricted driver and reboot the machine on Natty (64-bit), then i only get a black screen after reboot and my system does not respond. I can´t see the login screen. On nvidia web page i saw that the current driver is 270.41.06. Is that driver used as current driver? Btw, i am an ubuntu/linux beginner and therefore not very familiar with ubuntu. What can i do to solve the black screen problem? EDIT: Setting the nomodeset parameter does not solve the problem. After ubuntu start, first i see the ubuntu logo, then strange pixels and at the end the black screen. HELP! EDIT2: Thank you, but setting the "video=vesa:off gfxpayload=text" parameters do no solve the problem too. Same result as in last edit. HELP. I would like to see Unity. As fossfreedom suggested I executed sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup However, there is still the black screen after reboot. EDIT5 Neutro's advice (reinstalling the headers) did not solve the problem, too. :-( Any further help is appreciated! EDIT6 I just installed driver 173.xxx. After reboot the system shows me only "Checking battery state". Just for information. As a result i got a BSOD after installing the nvidia driver. :-) For this reason i sent my new machine back to the hardware reseller. I will inform you as soon as i have a new system.   Hello, currently I have dual boot with 2 windows 7. (dont ask why, long story, I need them for each with different settings involving Audio Recording) I am very keen to install the new Ubuntu and get into a new OS, out of interest but I don't want to mess with my current 2 windows installations? If I install Ubuntu, will this simply add to my list of OS boot options when you set it, like I did when I install my 2nd Windows 7 Any comments or help would be great? Thanks Bill
