• Cannot establish Wired connection on Acer Aspire 5930G

  I use an Acer Aspire 5930G, dual booted with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.10. My problem is that i cannot establish wired connection on my ubuntu. Wireless connection works in both of my OSs but the Wired connection does not, only on the Ubuntu. I have already tried the common fix: echo on | sudo tee /sys/class/net/eth0/device/power/control but without any results. • Network trials and tribulations

  Hi, I am in the process of setting up a small (two PC's, both running Windows 7) network using a D-link DI-604 router (which acts only as hub, it's not set up in any way). In the Network and 'Sharing Center' in 'Control Panel' I clicked 'Set up a New (Connection or) Network'. All went well up until the moment I attempted to connect one PC with the other (in the 'Connect' dialog I entered the other PC's IP, no pwd). I can use both PC's to connect to and browse the net though, so the router/hub does not seem to be the problem. And I must have done something right, because the other computer shows up in the 'Network Map'. Any and all help is much appreciated!

• Amavis / Atermime - Dynamic Email Signatures (Disclaimers)

  I am running a basic iredmail install with amavis, postfix, dovecot. I want to use the declaimer feature to automatically append a disclaimer (in our case a signature). The reasoning for this is that clients (ipad, outlook, etc) don’t have to be configured with signature settings, and that we have corporate control over the actual signatures that are posted. Instead of: '[email protected]' => 'boss.domain.com.txt' I am trying to get to %mailbox + ‘@’ + %domain => %mailbox + “.” + %domain + ‘.txt’ This way we can simply use a script to generate the .txt / .htm signature files using just mysql / php. • Dye Sub printer with specific prints remaining - can I command-line query this?

  Hey, I've got a Sony Dye-Sub printer that holds ink/paper sets - i.e. a very certain amount of ink and paper for ~200 prints. This information is available to me from within Control Panel Printers Preferences Printer Device Information (i.e. current 189 remaining prints). Any way I can perhaps get this information from the command line? I'd like to write a little program to tell me when the number of prints gets low (i.e. < 20), rather than suffer the annoying Windows "run out of paper" popup. I've found the Windows VBScript print utilities, but can't seem to find the request I need for this. Any suggestions? Jason

• Share one monitor with another user and display their screen as well

  My housemate and I just started playing the original RollerCoaster Tycoon again - what a nostalgia trip! Anyways, we both have two monitors, and would like to view the other's game on the secondary monitor while playing, since we're in different rooms. VNC-like applications sorta work, but they require two separate instances running (one to share each direction), and as a whole are rather slow and clumsy. We don't need any remote control at all, just viewing. I'm using XP, he Win7. We could probably get it to run through some means in Linux, if necessary.

• Windows 2003 Server on a domain, XP client PCs on a workgroup - file share without authentication?

  I have a windows 2003 server on a domain and client PCs running XP on a workgroup. I have created a file share on the server that should be accessible by the client PCs. I even set the security and sharing to 'Everyone' just to test. When I try to access the file share from any of the XP machines, I get an authentication prompt that displays asking for credentials, even though 'Everyone' has full control currently (just for testing purposes). Why is it asking to authenticate? I need it to where it doesn't ask to authenticate. I also made sure passwords were set on all XP machines since I found this could be one possible issue and they all were. Any ideas? Thanks!

  Where is Stakeholder Management in OUM?  Stakeholder Management typically falls into the purview of the Project Manager, which means much of the associated guidance is found in the OUM Manage Focus Area (a.k.a. Manage).  There is no process in Manage named Stakeholder Management, but this “touch point” can be found in a variety of other processes including Bid Transition (BT), Communication Management (CMM) and Organizational Change Management (OCHM). •         Stakeholder management starts in the Bid Transition process with Stakeholder Analysis •         This Stakeholder Analysis is used to build the Project Team Communication Plan in the Communication Management process. •         Stakeholder management should be executed during the Execution and Control phase.  For example, as issues are resolved, the project manager should take the action item to follow up with the affected stakeholders to ensure they are aware that the issue has been resolved. •       The broader topic of Stakeholder management is also addressed very thoroughly in the Organizational Change Management process in the Implement Focus Area, which is a touch point to the Organizational Change Management process in Manage. • MySQL proxy HA with no need to reconnect after node failure

  I use MySQL with Galera wsrep to get synchronous replication, that part it's up and running I need to setup a kind of proxy to handle client connections. Since any node in cluster can fail, clients will not connect nodes directly, but only via proxy. Currently I use Galera Load Balancer which does it work, but with one exception: if one node fails, all clients connected via proxy to that node get connection error and need to reconnect. I have no control over server applications connected to proxy and some of them can't reconnect automatically and need manual restart. So the question is how to force proxy automatically redirect already connected applications to new data node, without need to reconnect?

• Is there analog of aticonfig --set-powerstate for open source radeon driver?

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on relatively old laptop with ATI Mobility x600 inside. On the last version of Ubuntu, when I was able to run proprietary fglrx driver, I was able to slow down graphic card by aticonfig --set-powerstate 1 and save some battery charge. Now I forced to run open source driver as ATI decided to drop support for old cards. But I can't find a way to control power states now except relying on DynamicClocks option in xorg.conf. But I really know better when and what powerstate I want, so is there a tool that let me change power state manually or at least let me somehow change the behavior of automatic power state selection?

• Varnish doesn't seem to be caching

  I've setup a Varnish cache mirror to sit in front of a file server, but it seems to be endlessly re-downloading data from my file server. There's about 100GB of data in total, but so far Varnish has downloaded 800GB from my file server. • Publishing and setting permissions to a Linux share to AD

  I have a Linux share that I want to publish to users on my Active Directory domain. I'd like to be able to control the permissions to access that share using security groups. So say I have a share named "Share" on my Linux machine named "Linux" with IP address 192.168.1.2. I publish \\192.168.1.2\Share in AD and make it so that only people who are part of the "IT" security group can access it. What's to stop anyone who's not in the "IT" security group from just going to explorer and typing in \\192.168.1.2\Share or \\Linux\Share into their Explorer to access this share? Do I need to set up permissions on the Linux file server?

• Exchange 2010 install locks out high level accounts

  Basically, when we installed Exchange 2010 alongside our Exchange 2003 server (we assume), this is what caused our problem. The Exchange 2010 server is not active, just running on the domain. What's actually going on is that user groups like Enterprise Admins are getting a single deny flag on Full Control over mailboxes currently residing on the Exchange 2003 server which is preventing any of us from making changes. It says these permissions are inherited from the Parent Object, but we have no idea which one that is. Any idea on how to go about fixing this?

The code implements proper event sequence, consistent interfaces, correct data and control flow, completeness, appropriate allocation timing and sizing budgets, and error definition, isolation, and recovery. and The software components and units of each software item have been completely and correctly integrated into the software item Not sure how to verify without testing but it is not there as a technique. From IEEE: Verification: The process of evaluating software to determine whether the products of a given development phase satisfy the conditions imposed at the start of that phase. [IEEE-STD-610]. Validation: The process of evaluating software during or at the end of the development process to determine whether it satisfies specified requirements. [IEEE-STD-610] At the end of development phase? That would mean UAT.. So the question is, what testing (unit, integration, system, uat) will be considered verification or validation? I do not understand why some say dynamic verification is testing, while others that only validation. An example: I am testing an application. System requirements say there are two fields with max. lenght of 64 characters and Save button. Use case say: User will fill in first and last name and save. When checking the fields and Save button presence, I would say its verification. When I follow the use case, its validation. So its both together, done on the system as a whole.

• What are the common mistakes in 'tailored Scrum approaches'?

  I have seen this before. Management wants to be agile and be scrummified, but does not want to step out of the status quo. My latest observation is no different; here, the Scrum is 'tailored' to the organization; specifically into a weird many-people-process. The diagram showing the different participants. I am putting together a document listing why this will not work. Here are the obvious ones: 1. There are product owner agents (an obvious WTF), who report to the product owner: causing dilution of decision making capability 2. There is a role that looks similar to a manager in the traditional approach - development manager: an obvious attempt at command-and-control model 3. The ScrumMaster's role includes collecting timesheets, which are used to track progress instead of burndown charts: detrimental to agile's efforts to build teams with motivated individuals Leaving the question "how would you convince the management?", my question is more at, "what else do you see as failures in this/similar 'tailored Scrum approaches'? EDIT: The diagram might use a few more details 1. The development manager is not part of the development team, with not very clearly defined responsibilities, except: developer performance assessemnt, recruitment, etc., 2. There are more than two teams (with ScrumMaster+development manager+dev team) with the same product owner for all teams!

• What is wrong with my game loop/mechanic?

  I'm currently working on a 2d sidescrolling game prototype in HTML5 canvas. My implementations so far include a sprite, vector, loop and ticker class/object. Which can be viewed here: http://elias-schuett.de/apps/_experiments/2d_ssg/js/ So my game essentially works well on todays lowspec PC's and laptops. But it does not on an older win xp machine I own and on my Android 2.3 device. I tend to get ~10 FPS with these devices which results in a too high delta value, which than automaticly gets fixed to 1.0 which results in a slow loop. Now I know for a fact that there is a way to implement a super smooth 60 or 30 FPS loop on both devices. Best example would be: http://playbiolab.com/ I don't need all the chunk and debugging technology impact.js offers. I could even write a super simple game where you just control a damn square and it still wouldn't run on a equally fast 30 or 60 fps. Here is the Loop class/object I'm using. It requires a requestAnimationFrame unify function. • Remote Desktop over SSH SOCKS proxy to bypass firewall

  Hi folks, I'm trying to connect to a Windows server from my Mac using RDC2.1 for Mac. The problem is the server I need to connect to is guarded by the evil dragon - IP-based access control on a completely separate network. I have an IP I can get in on, but it's at my office (i.e. a completely separate network). Because that network isn't set up for VPN, I've set up a SOCKS proxy through an SSH tunnel (which is all working fine). (SSH proxy) Me (on my Mac) ----------> Office Linux box ----> Windows server (home network) (office network) (other network) From my Linux server in my office (the SSH server) I can telnet to port 3389 on the Windows server, no problem. But from my Mac I can't get so much as a squeak out of it. Any ideas?

• Keyboard-shortcut key-press-detection sensitivity settings

  last week I switched from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04 and after setting up my keyboard shortcuts, e.g., CTRL+ALT+E for my favorite editor and CTRL+ALT+X for the terminal, I noticed that the behavior when pressing the appropriate keys changed somehow. I know this is very subjective and I am not 100% percent sure if I am suddenly just too lazy when using my keyboard, but here is what I noticed: To run your shortcuts, you usually press the modifiers first and in addition press the alphanum key. Now, if I hold the modifiers down very consciously and press the alphanum key afterwards everything works fine. However, I noticed that I may often release the modifiers a bit too early. In Ubuntu 10.10 (metacity/compiz) my keyboard shortcuts would still execute and my tools would pop up. This does not work anymore in 12.04. Nevertheless, I still believe the old behavior to be more intuitive and would like to have it back. I a nutshell: Is there a parameter to control the shortcut-key-press detection behavior? I already searched the ubuntu keyboard options and searched for "keyboard" in gconf-editor but could not find any hints so far.

This is the bit I really can't get my head around. So if the swipe generates a lot of velocity then the wheel will carry on moving slightly in that direction until the overall force which pulls the wheel back to the starting position kicks in. Any ideas/code snippets?

  In Windows7, Is it possible to define/change the proxy config from the command line ? So, using the gui, I would go: Start Control Panel Network and Internet Internet Options Connections LAN Settings and then - enable/disable the proxy - define IP:port of proxy server But I would like to rather do this from the command line (so that I can run the command from a batch-file with a shortcut key - enabling me to switch proxy configs using a short-cut, rather than having to wade through the MS wizard). I've looked at using netsh.exe to change the settings for WinHTTP, but this seems to be thr wrong thing to do, as the WinHTTP setting do not appear to be related to the LAN settings. Much appreciated folks.

• How would you TDD the functionality of getting the corresponding process of a running windows service?

  Purpose Over the last year or more I've been learning unit testing via books I've read recently like The Art of Unit Testing, Working Effectively with Legacy Code, and others. I've also been using unit tests, mocking frameworks, and the like, periodically at work and definitely see the value. However, I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind around TDD (as opposed to TAD) when the situation calls for code that is gong to mostly use external API calls. Problem to solve Get the process associated with a windows service using the service name. example: Function GetProcess(ByVal serviceName As String) As Process Rules Show each major iteration in production & test code using TDD No need to see any other code or configuration that is required to get things to run. Just curious about the interfaces, concrete classes, and test methods. C# or VB.NET Must use the .Net framework regarding services/processes (i.e. System.Diagnostics.Process) Test Frameworks: Nunit or MSTest Isolation Frameworks: Moq, Rhino Mock, or Microsoft Moles Must write true unit tests (no integration tests) Additional notes As far as I can tell there are two approaches design wise. Use an Inversion of Control approach along with using the Adapter and/or Facade patterns to wrap the underlying .net framework objects dealing with processes and services. Keep the .net framework code in the class containing the Get Process method and use code detouring (interception) via Microsoft Moles to isolate the hard dependencies from the method under test.
