• Is using SharePoint as a intranet/extranet portal a good idea?

  I work for a fortune 500 company in IT and we have developed many systems/applications to do a variety of things. We are in need of some commonality of these applications and a better portal/dashboard/landing page for these applications. So, our customers and employees would log into this portal and see all the "things" that they can do which then link to their own application. This could maybe just iframe in each application inside of this portal to keep brand and navigation consistency. We are trying to decide whether to use SharePoint 2007 or 2010 for this or develop a portal/dashboard of sorts in house. We would like this portal to look and feel very branded to our needs and really not even feel like its using SharePoint (if needed). An example is to provide our own Menu control that drives the navigation if needed. Does anyone have any pros/cons for using SharePoint in such a way? Any advice on implementation (e.g. use 2010, much easier to customize design than 2007, etc)?

• Problem Displaying XML in Grid View-newbie

  I am trying to do something in VisualWebDev 2008 Express that I thought would be simple, but it is not working. I want to display data from an XML file so I added the XMLDataSource to my page, pointed it to the XML file, and then added the GridView and connected it to the datasource. I am getting the following error: GridView - GridView1There was an error rendering the control. The data source for GridView with id 'GridView1' did not have any properties or attributes from which to generate columns. Ensure that your data source has content. • Objecive C Error, Message sent to deallocated object

  Hello, I have several buttons on my app that are being created dynamically. They are all pointed at the button click event when pressed. When the button pressed method is called, the sender's tag(int value) is parsed into the controllers house ID. It works with one of the buttons... the first one created to be specific, but the others throw the following error: -[CFNumber intValue]: message sent to deallocated instance 0xc4bb0ff0 I am not releasing these buttons anywhere in my code... I haven't set them to auto release or anything like that... just wondering why they are doing this on the click. • Using WCF to expose underlying process

  I think I must be a little dull because I'm having so much difficulty with this. I use WCF for pretty much everything in-house, it's the most appropriate technology. I have a new Silverlight 3 app that is connecting to the WCF service and that's working fine. Where the problem begins is: Because of the expense in creating the objects within this service and the high correlation of individual objects being shared between clients I want to have a console application that basically gathers/calculates/caches all the data for the service 24/7 and the service basically connects to the console app (or whatever it is) and gets the pre-processed data. eg, think of it in terms of a stock reporting app (which it is). Person A has a portfolio of x, y z Person B has a portfolio of x, q, z, r The service needs to provide updated metrics on how their portfolio is performing. So instead of every 1 second processing person A, then person B, the app independently gathers the stock price and persons position information into memory and the service just queries the in memory result. • Suitable ESXi Spec

  Finally I have some money to buy a new server and replace the one I have been using for 10 years. Im thinking of running ESXi on the new server. And intend to use it as follows; One W2008 R2 Guest running Exchange, File store, SVN and an accounting application for day to day running of the company. Multiple Guest VMs W2K, XP, Vista & WIN7 that were setup for testing in-house & real customer images also for testing. Probably Two Server Guest Os's W2003 & W2008 running at the same time again for testing. One Guest VM for builds & Continuous integration. Possibly one Guest running W220R2 for a customer website (Portal) This server will have to last another 10 years so I want to get the spec right. Althought I am clear on the memory and disk requirments I am not so clear on the processor(s). Im thinking of 2 Quadcore processors but welcome advice on this. Proposed Spec 10GB Ram 2TB Sata Drives (Hardware Raid 1) 2 Processors (TBC) Normally 3 Server VM's will running concurrently and the other VMs will be started as required. Max expected VMs running about 7. Max users = 4. TIA..

• Calling method on category included from iPhone static library causes NSInvalidArgumentException

  I have created a static library to house some of my code like categories. I have a category for UIViews in "UIView-Extensions.h" named Extensions. In this category I have a method called: - (void)fadeOutWithDelay:(CGFloat)delay duration:(CGFloat)duration; Calling this method works fine on the simulator on Debug configuration. However, if try to run the app on the device I get a NSInvalidArgumentException: [UIView fadeOutWithDelay:duration:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1912b0 *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[UIView fadeOutWithDelay:duration:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1912b0 It seems for some reason UIView-Extensions.h is not being included in the device builds. What I have checked/tried I did try to include another category for NSString, and had the same issue. Other files, like whole classes and functions work fine. It is an issue that only happens with categories. I did a clean all targets, which did not fix the problem. I checked the static library project, the categories are included in the target's "copy headers" and "compile sources" groups. The static library is included in the main projects "link binary with library" group. Another project I have added the static library to works just fine. • SEO redirects for removed pages

  Hi, Apologies if SO is not the right place for this, but there are 700+ other SEO questions on here. I'm a senior developer for a travel site with 12k+ pages. We completely redeveloped the site and relaunched in January, and with the volatile nature of travel, there are many pages which are no longer on the site. Examples: /destinations/africa/senegal.aspx /destinations/africa/features.aspx Of course, we have a 404 page in place (and it's a hard 404 page rather than a 30x redirect to a 404). Our SEO advisor has asked us to 30x redirect all our 404 pages (as found in Webmaster Tools), his argument being that 404's are damaging to our pagerank. He'd want us to redirect our Senegal and features pages above to the Africa page (which doesn't contain the content previously found on Senegal.aspx or features.aspx). An equivalent for SO would be taking a url for a removed question and redirecting it to /questions rather than showing a 404 'Question/Page not found'. My argument is that, as these pages are no longer on the site, 404 is the correct status to return. I'd also argue that redirecting these to less relevant pages could damage our SEO (due to duplicate content perhaps)? It's also very time consuming redirecting all 404's when our site takes some content from our in-house system, which adds/removes content at will. Thanks for any advice, Adam

• is there an equivalent of a trigger for general stored procedure execution on sql server

  Hi All, Hope you can help. Is there a way to detect when a stored proc is being run on SQL Server without altering the SP itself? Here's the requirement. We need to track users running reports from our enterprise data warehouse as the core product we use doesn't allow for this. Both core product reports and a slew of in-house ones we've added all return their data from individual stored procs. We don't have a practical way of altering the parts of the product webpages where reports are called from. We also can't change the stored procs for the core product reports. (It would be trivial to add a logging line to the start/end of each of our inhouse ones). What I'm trying to find therefore, is whether there's a way in SQL Server (2005 / 2008) to execute a logging stored proc whenever any other stored procedure runs, without altering those stored procedures themselves. We have general control over the SQL Server instance itself as it's local, we just don't want to change the product stored procs themselves. Any one have any ideas? Is there a kind of "stored proc executing trigger"? Is there an event model for SQL Server that we can hook custom .Net code into? (Just to discount it from the start, we want to try and make a change to SQL Server rather than get into capturing the report being run from the products webpages etc) Thoughts appreciated Thanks

• Applying for .net jobs as a "self learner"

  Hi All, I have recently started applying for .Net jobs. I currently work in a sales role with a large telco. I found out quite late that I like programming and as such bought my house and made commitments that mean college is not an option. What I would like to know is, is it harder to get a junior job as a self learner? I have gotten a few enquiries regarding my C.V but nothing concrete yet. I try to be involved in projects as I get the chance and tend to put up any worthwhile projects as I develop them. I suppose I understand a lot of concepts but specific features need some looking up to implement as I may not know the syntax off the top of my head.

• FileSystemWatcher does not fire when using C++ std::ofstream

  I'm trying to add a log monitor to an in-house test utility for a windows service I'm working on. The service is written in C++ (win32) and the utility is in .NET (C#) The log monitor works for many other C++ apps I've written, but not for my service. The only main difference I can see is that the other apps use the older ::WriteFile() to output to the log, whereas in the service I'm using std::ofstream like this: std::ofstream logFile; logFile.open("C:\\mylog.log"); logFile << "Hello World!" << std::endl; logFile.flush(); From my utility I use FileSystemWatcher like this: FileSystemWatcher fsw = new FileSystemWatcher(@"C:\", "mylog.log"); fsw.Changed += new FileSystemEventHandler(fsw_Handler); fsw.EnableRaisingEvents = true; But for the service, it never gets any change events as the log is updated. I've found that any example code using FileSystemWatcher I've come across online has the same exact issue as well... But, I know the events should be available because other log monitor apps (like BareTail) work fine with the service log file. I'd rather get the C# code for the utility to just work so it works with anything, but if I have to change the logging code for the service I will. Does anyone see what's going wrong here?

  In my Javascript drag and drop build app, a variety of buildings can be built. The specific characteristics of these are all saved in one object, like var buildings = { house: ['#07DA21',12,12,0,20], bank: ['#E7DFF2',16,16,0,3], stadium: ['#000000',12,12,0,1], townhall: ['#2082A8',20,8,0,1], etcetera } So every building has a number of characteristics, like color, size, look which can be called as buildings[townhall][0] (referring to the color). The object changes as the user changes things. When clicking 'reset' however, the whole object should be reset to its initial settings again to start over, but I have no idea how to do that. For normal objects it is something like. function building() {} var building = new building(); delete building; var building2 = new building(); You can easily delete and remake it, so the properties are reset. But my object is automatically initialized. Is there a way to turn my object into something that can be deleted and newly created, without making it very complicating, or a better way to store this information?

• [Cocoa] Core Animation with an NSView and subviews

  I've subclassed NSView to create a 'container' view (which I've called TRTransitionView) which is being used to house two subviews. At the click of a button, I want to transition one subview out of the parent view and transition the other in, using the Core Animation transition type: kCATransitionPush. For the most part, I have this working as you'd expect (here's a basic test project I threw together). The issue I'm seeing relates to resizing my window and then toggling between my two views. After resizing a window, my subviews will appear at seemingly random locations within my TRTransitionView. Additionally, it appears as if the TRTransitionView hasn't stretched correctly and is clipping the contents of its subviews. Ideally, I would like subviews anchored to the top-left of their parent view at all times, and to also grow to expand the size of the parent view. The second issue relates to an NSTableView I've placed in my first subview. When my window is resized, and my TRTransitionView resizes to match its new dimensions, my TableView seems to resize its content quite awkwardly (the entire table seems to jolt around) and the newly expanded space that the table now occupies seems to 'flash' (as if in the process of being animated). Extremely difficult to describe, but is there any way to stop this?   How do you classify a row of seperate cells in matlab? Atm I can classify single coloums like so: training = [1;0;-1;-2;4;0;1]; % this is the sample data. target_class = ['posi';'zero';'negi';'negi';'posi';'zero';'posi']; % target_class are the different target classes for the training data; here 'positive' and 'negetive' are the two classes for the given training data % Training and Testing the classifier (between positive and negative) test = 10*randn(25, 1); % this is for testing. • Screen capture doesn't work on MFC application in Vista

  We've got some in-house applications built in MFC, with OpenGL drawing routines. They all use the same code to draw on the screen and either print the screen or save it to a JPEG file. Everything's been working fine in Windows XP, and I need to find a way to make them work on Vista. In three of our applications, everything works. In the remaining one, I can get the window border, title bar, menus, and task bar, but the interior never shows up. As I said, these applications use the exact same code to write to the screen and capture the window image, and the only difference I see that looks like it might be relevant is that the problem application uses the MFC multiple document interface, while the ones that work use the single document interface. Either the answer isn't on the net, or I'm worse at Googling than I thought. I asked on the MSDN forums, and the only practical suggestion I got was to use GDI+ rather than GDI, and that did nothing different. I have tried different things with every part of the code that captures and prints or save, given a pointer to the window, so apparently it's a matter of the window itself. I haven't rebuilt the offending application using SDI yet, and I really don't have any other ideas. Has anybody seen anything like this?

• How can I tackle 'profoundly found elsewhere' syndrome (inverse of NIH)?

  How can I encourage colleagues to embrace small-scale innovation within our team(s), in order to get things done quicker and to encourage skills development? (the term 'profoundly found elsewhere' comes from Wikipedia, although it is scarcely used anywhere else apart from a reference to Proctor & Gamble) I've worked in both environments where there is a strong opposition to software which hasn't been developed in-house (usually because there's a large community of developers), and more recently (with far fewer central developers) where off-the-shelf products are far more favoured for the usual reasons: maintenance, total cost over product lifecycle, risk management and so on. I think the off the shelf argument works in the majority of cases for the majority of users, even though as a developer the product never quite does what I'd like it to do. However, in some cases there are clear gaps where the market isn't able to provide specifically what we would need, or at least it isn't able to without charging astronomical consultancy rates for a bespoke solution. These can be small web applications which provide a short-term solution to a particular need in one specific department, or could be larger developments that have the potential to serve a wider audience, both across the organisation and into external markets. The problem is that while development of these applications would be incredibly cheap in terms of developer hours, and delivered very quickly without the need for glacial consultation, the proposal usually falls flat because of risk: 'Who'll maintain the project tracker that hasn't had any maintenance for the past 7 years while you're on holiday for 2 weeks?' 'What if one of our systems changes and the connector breaks?' 'How can you guarantee it's secure/better/faster/cheaper/holier than Company X's?' With one developer behind these little projects, the answers are invariably: 'Nobody, but...' 'It will break, just like any other application would...' 'I, uh...' How can I better answer these questions and encourage people to take a little risk in order to stimulate creativity and fast-paced, short-lifecycle development instead of using that 6 months to consult about what tender process we might use?

• My chance to shape our development process/policy

  Hey guys, I'm sorry if this is a duplicate, but the question search terms are pretty generic. I work at a small(ish) development firm. I say small, but the company is actually a fair size; however, I'm only the second full-time developer, as most past work has been organized around contractors. I'm in a position to define internal project process and policy- obvious stuff like SCM and unit-testing. Methodology is outside the scope of the document I'm putting together, but I'd really like to push us in a leaner (and maybe even Agile?) direction. I feel like I have plenty of good practice recommendations, but not enough solid motivation to make my document the spirit guide I'd like it to be. I've separated the document into "principles" and "recommendations". Recommendations have been easy to come up with. Use SCM, strive for 1-step, regularly scheduled builds, unit test first, document as you go... Listing the principles that are supposed to be informing these recommendations, though, has been rough. I've come up with "tools work for us; we should never work for tools" and a hazy clause aimed at our QA (which has been overly manual) that I'd like to read "tedium is the root of all evil". I don't want to miss an opportunity with this document to give us a good in-house start and maybe even push us toward Agile. What principles am I missing?

• What do we log and why do we log it?

  This has been bugging me for quite some time. Reading various questions on SO, blogs and listening to colleagues, I keep hearing how important "logging" is. How various logging frameworks stack up against each other, and how there are so many to pick from it's (apparently) ridiculous. Now, I know what logging is. What I don't know is what is supposed to be logged and why. Sure, I can guess. Exceptions? Sounds like something one might want to log... but which exceptions? And is it only exceptions? And what do I do with the logged information? If it's an in-house app, then that could probably be put to good use, but if it's a commercial desktop application, how is the log of... whatever... helping anyone? I doubt regular users would be peeking inside. Is it then something you ask the users to provide on request? I'm deeply frustrated by my own ignorance in this. It's also surprising how little information there is about this. The info on the websites of the various logging frameworks is all written for an audience that already knows what it wants to log, and knows why it needs to do so. Same things goes for the various discussions on SO about logging, like for instance this highly voted up question on Logging best practices. For a question with so many votes, it's almost comical how there's next to nothing in there that would answer my what and why questions. So being finally fed up, I'm asking here: what do people log, and why do they log it?

  My company develops several types of applications. A lot of our business comes from doing multimedia-type apps, typically done in Flash. However, now that side of the house is starting to migrate towards doing Flex development. Most of our other development is done using .NET. I'm trying to make a push towards doing Silverlight development instead, since it would take better advantage of the .NET developers on staff. I prefer the Silverlight platform over the Flex platform for the simple fact that Silverlight is all .NET code. We have more .NET developers on staff than Flash/Flex developers, and most of our Flash/Flex developers are graphic artists (not real programmers). Only reason they push towards Flex right now is because it seems like the logical step from Flash. I've done development using both, and I honestly believe Silverlight is easier to work with. But I'm trying to convince people who are only Flash developers. So here's my question: If I'm going to go into a meeting to praise Silverlight, why would a company want to go with Silverlight instead of Flex? Other than the obvious "not everyone has Silverlight", what are the pros and cons for each?

• Appropriate Footwear for An Interview

  There's a raging debate going on at my house about appropriate footwear for an IT interview. I have an interview, on Thursday, for a SQL/C# developer with the Fraud dept. at a large accounting firm. I was planning on wearing what I have pretty much always worn for an interview: a nice suit, white shirt, subdued tie, and a pair of dress cowboy boots. My spouse and daughter both know that my dress code for nearly every professional job I've ever gotten, is pretty much the same -- including the boots -- with what I just described. Now, however, because I've been out of work for an unfortunately long time (my last contract ended 03/09 -- pretty much coincidental with the bottom falling out of the economy). My wife insists that style standards are fundamentally different on the left side of the Mississippi vs. the right side of the river. My view is that I've always worn "cowboy" boots; since I was old enough to fit into a real pair. I moved East, as an adult, over 30 years ago, but my dress patterns haven't changed. And in all that time, my dress patterns have never changed. Now I both really want, and really need, this job. But, is that sufficient reason to change a habit 40 years in the making? I would really appreciate the thoughts ya'all (little West of Ms. colloquialism, there) might have on this matter. Thanks. P.S. If this sort of question is inappropriate for this form, I apologize.

  Hi, Im running into an issue that's really baffleing me. I have a container that I want to apply a background to an postion it in the top right of the browser screen. • How To Create a Flexible Plug-In Architecture?

  A repeating theme in my development work has been the use of or creation of an in-house plug-in architecture. I've seen it approached many ways - configuration files (XML, .conf, and so on), inheritance frameworks, database information, libraries, and others. In my experience: A database isn't a great place to store your configuration information, especially co-mingled with data Attempting this with an inheritance hierarchy requires knowledge about the plug-ins to be coded in, meaning the plug-in architecture isn't all that dynamic Configuration files work well for providing simple information, but can't handle more complex behaviors Libraries seem to work well, but the one-way dependencies have to be carefully created. As I seek to learn from the various architectures I've worked with, I'm also looking to the community for suggestions. How have you implemented a solid plug-in architecture? What was your worst failure (or the worst failure you've seen)? What would you do if you were going to implement a new plug-in architecture? What SDK or open source project that you've worked with has the best example of a good architecture? A few examples I've been finding on my own: Perl's Module::Plugable An SO question with a list for Java (including Sever Provider Interfaces) An SO question for C++ pointing to a Dr. Dobbs article These examples seem to play to various language strengths. Is a good plugin architecture necessarily tied to the language? Is it best to use tools to create a plugin architecture, or to do it on one's own following models?

• Why is Firefox prompting to download a file that is POST'd to?

  This is the most peculiar thing. It is from an old in house CMS. When I attempt to submit my changes, it prompts to save the file linked in the action attribute of the form. • Why am I getting "Message sent to deallocated instance" in Objective-C?

  I have several buttons on my app that are being created dynamically. They are all pointed at the button click event when pressed. When the button pressed method is called, the sender's tag (int value) is parsed into the controller's house ID. It works with one of the buttons — the first one created, to be specific — but the others throw the following error: -[CFNumber intValue]: message sent to deallocated instance 0xc4bb0ff0 I am not releasing these buttons anywhere in my code. I haven't set them to autorelease or anything like that. I'm just wondering why they are doing this on the click.
