• Don't want to JSON serialize the whole list of classes

  Hey, I've got a IList of Sites in my application and Site has a large amount of properties. I'm wanting to convert this list to JSON to be used in a dropdownlist similar to this var sites = SiteRepository.FindAllSites(); return new JsonResult() { Data = sites, JsonRequestBehavior = JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet }; the problem I have is that I only want to use the id and name properties of the site class. I was thinking a way round this would be to use an 'adaptor' class that would then only expose these two properties and I would then serialize that. The problem I have is I want to make the class generic so that it can handle any list of objects. Has anybody come across a similar situation and solved it?

  Hi, I am using a simple script on my PHP webpage to decode and output JSON as text. However, what ever I try I can't get it to wordwrap the output. $file = file_get_contents('sample.txt'); $out = (json_decode($file)); echo $out->mainText; How can I get this script to wordwrap at 600 characters without chopping words in half? If possible, can you show me the whole script please as I am slowly learning. Thanks

• Can we represent bit fields in JSON/BSON?

  We have a dozen simulators talking to each other on UDP. The interface definition is managed in a database. The simulators are written using different languages; mostly C++, some in Java and C#. Currently, when systems engineer makes changes in the interface definition database, simulator developers manually update the communication data structures in their code. The data is mostly 2-5 bytes with bit fields for each signal. What I want to do is to generate one file from interface definition database describing byte and bit field definitions and let each developer add it to his simulator code with minimal fuss. I looked at JSON/BSON but couldn't find a way to represent bit fields in it. Thanks Zubair

• ASP.NET MVC application architecture "guidelines"

  I'm looking for some feedback on my ASP.NET MVC based CMS application architecture. Domain Model - depends on nothing but the System classes to define types. For now, mostly anemic. Repository Layer - abstracted data access, only called by the services layer Services Layer - performs business logic on domain models. Exposes view models to the controllers. ViewModelMapper - service that translates back and forth between view models and domain models Controllers - super thin "traffic cop" style functionality that interacts with the service layer and only talks in terms of view models, never domain models My domain model is mostly used as data transfer (DTO) objects and has minimal logic at the moment. I'm finding this is nice because it depends on nothing (not even classes in the services layer). The services layer is a bit tricky... I only want the controllers to have access to viewmodels for ease of GUI programming. However, some of the services need to talk to each other. For example, I have an eventing service that notifies other listener services when content is tagged, when blog posts are created, etc. Currently, the methods that take domain models as inputs or return them are marked internal so they can't be used by the controllers. Sounds like overkill? Not enough abstraction? I'm mainly doing this as a learning exercise in being strict about architecture, not for an actual product, so please no feedback along the lines of "right depends on what you want to do". thanks! • ASP.NET WebMethod Returns JSON wrapped in quotes

  Hi, I have an asp.net page with a WebMethod on it to pass JSON back to my javascript. Bellow is the web method: [WebMethod] public static string getData(Dictionary<string, string> d) { string response = "{ \"firstname\": \"John\", \"lastname\": \"Smith\" }"; return response; } When this is returned to the client it is formatted as follows: { \"d\": \"{ \"firstname\": \"John\", \"lastname\": \"Smith\" }\" } The problem is the double quotes wrapping everything under 'd'. Is there something I've missed in the web method or some other means of returning the data without the quotes? I don't really want to be stripping it out on the client everytime. Also I've seen other articles where this doesn't happen. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

• Is there a decent JSON editor around?

  I'm looking for a JSON editor that is able to do syntax checking and outline view. Browser-based editors are not an option as they are clumsy for editing lots of local files. Eclipse plug-in would be ideal, but I would be happy with anything that works. I found only two so far, those in Aptana Studio Pro and Spket IDE (both available as plug-ins for Eclipse). While they have decent outline views, their syntax checking doesn't catch most of the common errors (like missing commas or braces) which makes them almost useless.

• PHP, MySQL, jQuery, AJAX: json data returns correct response but frontend returns error

  Hi all, I have a user registration form. I am doing server side validation on the fly via AJAX. The quick summary of my problem is that upon validating 2 fields, I get error for the second field validation. If I comment first field, then the 2nd field does not show any error. It has this weird behavior. With my limited knowledge of Firebug, however, I did find out that the following were the responses when I entered email and confirm_email in the fields: RESPONSE 1: {"success":"y","msg_email":"Email available"} RESPONSE 2: {"success":"y","msg_email":"Email available"}{"success":"n","msg_confirm_email":"Email and Confirm Email do NOT match."} Although the RESPONSE 2 shows that we are receiving the correct message via msg_confirm_email, in the front end, the alert 'Some error' is popping up (I have enabled the alert for debugging). I have spent 48 hours trying to change every part of the code wherever possible, but with only little success. What is weird about this is that if I comment the validation for $_POST['email'] field completely, then the validation for $_POST['confirm_email'] field is displaying correctly without any errors. If I enable it back, it is validating email field correctly, but when it reaches the point of validating confirm_email field, it is again showing me the error. I have also tried renaming success variable in check_ajax2.php page to other different names for both $_POST['email'] and $_POST['confirm_email'] but no success. I will be adding more fields in the form and validating within the check_ajax2.php page. So I am not planning on using different ajax pages for validating each of those fields (and I don't think it's smart to do it that way). I am not a jquery or AJAX guru, so all help in resolving this issue is highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

  I am using a layered architecture with the Entity Framework. Here's What I came up with till now (All the projects Except UI are class library): Entities: The POCO Entities. Completely persistence ignorant. No Reference to other projects. Generated by Microsoft's ADO.Net POCO Entity Generator. DAL: The EDMX (Entity Model) file with the context class. (t4 generated). References: Entities BLL: Business Logic Layer. Will implement repository pattern on this layer. References: Entities, DAL. This is where the objectcontext gets populated: var ctx=new DAL.MyDBEntities(); UI: The presentation layer: ASP.NET website. References: Entities, BLL + a connection string entry to entities in the config file (question #2). Now my three questions: Is my layer discintion approach correct? In my UI, I access BLL as follows: var customerRep = new BLL.CustomerRepository(); var Customer = customerRep.GetByID(myCustomerID); The problem is that I have to define the entities connection string in my UI's web.config/app.config otherwise I get a runtime exception. IS defining the entities connectionstring in UI spoils the layers' distinction? Or is it accesptible in a muli layered architecture. Should I take any additional steps to perform chage tracking, lazy loading, etc (by etc I mean the features that Entity Framework covers in a conventional, 1 project, non POCO code generation)? The problem is that i can "read" and "delete" my resource but i cannot "create" or "update". Each time i hit the relevant api i get a 400 Bad request Error.   I have a cross-domain POST request to http://api.local/user/auth - my API endpoint. I allow Cross Domain requests in my api with CORS. Using Chrome if that makes a difference. I get a valid server JSON response with 200 Status Code but I am using deferreds from a backbone model like so: @model.save() .fail(-> console.log 'sync fail') .success -> console.log 'sync OK' And I consistently get a 'sync fail' instead of the expected 'sync OK' Thoughts?

  Do JSON documents in RavenDB cost more than the SQL Server tables in terms of the storage and query costs. And also for centralized access, which one is better? What are the disadvantages of NON-SQL databases like RavenDB,CouchDB,MongoDB, etc... ? I can get that some of these are open source and support more datatypes like enums,objects,etc. but otherwise i don't see any big advantage? Currently there is a problem of storing huge amount of logs from various locations. I am planning to suggest these to my manager so just need a clear idea.

However a situation arose where I need to change a value of one of the items (e.g. change the ishidden property to true for gid: 28) and then run some other jQuery function against it. Is this possible? or do I have to re-build the whole object ? If possible, how can I achieve this? any help would be appreciated!

Suggestions? I have tried preg_replace but can't seem to get my expression right.
