  • Why do updates inside of a SQL transaction still need disk IO?

    In SQL Profiler you can see that very simple updates to a table by primary key take about 10-30ms each. On about every 10th update the write column shows 1, on all other updates it shows 0. This must mean that about every 10th update statement still requires disk IO. I wonder why that is. Would it not be more efficient queue up all IO until the transaction commits?

  • Windows 7 is shutting down unexpectedly, according to the logs.

    Here's a message from my eventvwr EventLog (Windows Logs System): The previous system shutdown at 11:51:15 AM on ?7/?29/?2009 was unexpected. This is funny because I was wondering why the system shut down while I was playing Civilizations IV full screen. Now I know. It was unexpected. Has anyone encountered and resolved this? A little background: I am running Windows 7 RC inside VMWare Fusion 2 (just updated a few months back) on a MacBook (Bitterly not Pro) aluminum-body. Windows 7 occasionally will shut down. This isn't a quick turn-off, it's a shutdown where all the programs are exited, the system waits until they quit (and Civ4 doesn't prompt me to save), it even installed Windows Updates before restarting. And yes it is restarting right after the shutdown. Because I run a game in full screen mode I do not notice any dialog with a countdown timer or anything like that that might be a warning. As I have iStat on my dashboard widgets I can see about 8 temperature monitors. I have seen the CPU get up to 74C before, but during the shutdown, though it seemed hot to the touch (always is), it read 61C for the CPU, 60C for heatsink A, 50C for heatsink B and in the 30s-40s for the enclosure and harddrives. As I type this now, the temps are actually higher, so I don't think the temperature caused it. I have at least six such events dating first from 5/17 which was a week after installing Windows 7. I did find one information level warning from USER32 in the system log that says: The process C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (DLAMBLIN-WIN7) has initiated the restart of computer DLAMBLIN-WIN7 on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned) Reason Code: 0x80020002 Shutdown Type: restart Comment: And another 15 minutes before that from Windows Update: Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes: - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB972260) Which I think kind of explains it. Though I don't know why restarting after an update would create an error event of "shutdown was unexpected", isn't that pretty odd? Now, how do I set it to never restart after an update unless I click something. Application of solution: As fretje reminded me, there's a couple of configurable settings for this, in windows 7 they're much in the same place as in Windows 2000 SP3 and XP SP1.   • Preparing Automatic Repair appears out of nowhere & takes forever?

    I shutdown my work machine (Windows 8.1 Pro) without any errors appearing (and without installing any new software and especially no new drivers the last couple days) yesterday evening, turned it on this morning and it automatically started into 'Preparing Automatic Repair' mode. 1st of - is there any way to get more information WHY this is appearing out of the blue and.. 2ndly, how long is this usually supposed to take? This is a rather beefy machine (Intel 3770k / 4 core 3.9ghz, Intel SSDs only and 32 gb of ram) but this screen has been 'loading' for almost 1.5 hours now. Is there any sort of debug/verbose mode that would give me ANY indication what's going on?

  • How can I control when Microsoft Security Essentials Updates Itself?

    I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) on a Windows Vista SP2 box. Every day in the 4 PM hour MSE updates itself: The green fortress icon in the notification area displays an animated download arrow, and my computer becomes unusably sluggish for five minutes (or more). I'm generally forced to take a coffee break or read a magazine. How can I control the time of day when this update occurs? Sometime after 9 PM would be ideal. Thanks.

  • How can I disable automatic send / receive for Outlook 2010 for Mac?

    There are lots of answers to disable automatic send / receive for Outlook for Windows, but not for Mac. Does anyone know how to do this for Outlook 2010 for Mac? The options offer no obvious capability, I've disabled all my 'Schedules' and defined it to 'Send All' and 'Send & Receive All' manually... but nothing stops emails from going in and out of my inbox at their will! You can see my screenshot... I've tried this both enabled and disabled. Thanks! Adam

  • Vista 32-Bit Home Premium will not let me install any updates.

    Windows update says that it could not search for new updates and gives the error code 80070643. From what I have read it has something to do with Office 2003 and I dont even have it installed. I tried downloading and installing vista sp2 but it fails as well giving me error: ERROR_EVT_CONFIGURATION_ERROR(0x89973aa2). Can someone please help me resolve this issue?

  • Getting Xbox Live via a wired network with my laptop that has internet access wirelessly

    I'm running the latest version (as of yesterday anyways) of Ubuntu Desktop 64bit, but installed on my laptop if it makes a difference. I had Windows 7 preinstalled when i bought it and it worked fine with the wireless from my house and bridging the connection with a LAN to my xbox for Live. Now with Ubuntu I tried the same setup, but I'm unfamiliar with Ubuntu so I didn't get far. Best I got so far is wireless internet on my laptop and a wired connection to the xbox that continually connects and disconnects. Heres my network settings. if theres fields not included its because theyre empty on mine or theyre my MAC address or network password Wireless Network 1 settings: Connect Automatically: Checked. Available to all Users: Checked Wireless: SSID: Franco's Mode: Infrastructure MTU: Automatic IPv4 Settings: Method: Automatic (DHCP) IPv6 Settings: Method: Automatic Wired Network 1: Connect Automatically: Checked Available to all Users: Checked Wired: MTU: Automatic IPv4 Settings: Method: Automatic (DHCP) IPv6 Settings: Method: Automatic Any help would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: 6:26pm It seems to be staying connected now. Doing the Network test on my xbox it pickups the network, but cannot detect any PC. Restarting the Xbox, however, leaves my computer unable to connect bringing up the Wire Network disconnected 'blip' every minute or so again. Before I had restarted the Xbox it said "Connected 100 MB/s". Now it only says "connecting". I did have my computer and xbox on in this Wired Network Disconnected blip cycle for a long period of time so it may have finally connected, just without the ability to detect my laptop. I left for 2 hours or so in the middle of typing up the original question. I finished posting this when i got back and then tried to mess with it a bit again, in case youre wondering why i didnt include this before... I've said too much. Forgive my long-winded fingers :p

  • What are your suggestions for best practises for regular data updates in a website database?

    My shared-hosting asp.net website must automatically run data update routines at regular times of day. Once it has finished running certain update routines, it can run update routines that are dependent on the previous updates. I have done this type of work before, using quite complicated setups. Some features of the framework I created are: A cron job from another server makes a request which starts a data update routine on the main server Each updater is loaded from web.config Each updater overrides a "canRunUpdate" method that determines whether its dependencies have finished updating Each updater overrides a "hasFinishedUpdate" method Each updater overrides a "runUpdate" method Updaters start and run in parallel threads The initial request from the cron job server started each updater in its own thread and then ended. As a result, the threads containing the updaters would be terminated before the updaters were finished. Therefore I had to give the updaters the ability to save partial results and continue the update job next time they are started up. As a result, the cron server had to call the updater many times to ensure the job is done. Sometimes the cron server would continue making update requests long after all the updates were completed. Sometimes the cron server would finish calling the update requests and leave some updates uncompleted. It's not the best system. I'm looking for inspiration. Any ideas please? Thank you :)

  • Automatic .NET code, nhibernate session, and LINQ datacontext clean-up?

    Hi all, in my goal to adopt better coding practices I have a few questions in general about automatic handling of code. I have heard different answers both from online and talking with other developers/programmers at my work. I am not sure if I should have split them into 3 questions, but they all seem sort of related: 1) How does .NET handle instances of classes and other code things that take up memory? I recently found out about using the factory pattern for certain things like service classes so that they are only instantiated once in the entire application, but then I was told that '.NET handles a lot of that stuff automatically when mentioning it.' 2) How does Nhibernate's session handle automatic clean-up of un-used things? I've seen some say that it is great at handling things automatically and you should just use a session factory and that's it, no need to close it. But I have also read and seem many examples where people close the hibernate session. 3) How does LINQ's datacontext handle this? Most of the time I never .disposed my datacontext's and the app didn't see to take a performance hit (though I am not running anything super intensively), but it seems like most people recommend disposing of your datacontext after you are done with it. However, I have seen many many code examples where the dispose method is never called. Also in general I found it kind of annoying that you couldn't access even one-deep child related objects after disposing of the datacontext unless you explicity also grabbed them in the query. Thanks all. I am loving this site so far, I kind of get lost and spend hours just reading things on here. =)

I should restart everyday IIS services. Events: "Changed limits: max_open_files: 2048 max_connections: 800 table_cache: 619" "Do you already have another mysqld server running on port: 3306 ?" "Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost'" 10055 Should I increase the innodb_buffer_pool_size, from 250M to 500M? Or/and? Thanks

    Where are the Microsoft application compatibility update settings stored on a Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 computer? Microsoft periodically release application compatibility updates (e.g. KB929427), where they list the shims that should be applied to a program in order to workaround known bugs in the software. Where are these app compat flags stored, and how can i see what shims are being applied? i have a feeling that a recent app compat update included a flag to force a particular piece of software, that we use, to require administrator. Because the task is scheduled to run nightly, and the running user does not have administrative privelages, the task is failing to start. The application is requiring to be elevated. It has the UAC shield overlay. The application has no RT_MANIFEST resource, and the compatibility option Run this program as administrator is disabled (per-user and all users). So all that's left is some secret global setting. i know user-specified compat flags are stored in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \AppCompatFlags \Layers

  • Why doesn't Linode ever have to shut down for updates?

    I've been using Linode for over a year now, and, unlike some lesser-known VPS hosts I've used, I've never been required to shut down my VPS by Linode. The only restarts have been ones I've initiated. How do they go for years on end without requiring restarts and with no downtime? Isn't downtime inevitable when upgrading some parts of the host system? Do they simply perform as few updates as possible? This isn't meant to be a Linode-specific question; I am only using them as an example because I have experience with them.

    I realize that this is a subjective question, but I'm trying to get some experiences We have Juniper firewalls in our organization (SSG-320M, SSG-5, and some old NS-5GT). We have the option of a yearly subscription for: Deep Inspection Signature Updates Juniper-Kaspersky Antivirus I seem similar services available from other Firewall vendors. We have Symantec Endpoint Protection deployed to all workstations and servers, plus a dedicated appliance for e-mail spam/virus filtering. So, I'm not sure what these firewall-base services will bring to the table that I don't already have. I would appreciate some feedback from people using these firewall services (Juniper or otherwise). Are these services generally worth it? Do they really catch anything? Do they interfere with normal traffic (false positives)?

  • What antivirus software supports updates without an internet connection?

    I'm putting antivirus software on Windows 7 computers in the middle of Africa. The computers don't have internet access, but still need to be protected against viruses from CDs and thumbdrives. Separate from these computers is one computer that does have extremely spotty internet access. What's the best AV software for this situation? The important part, as I see it, is that we need to keep the computers up to date, but can't let the AV software suck down updates at its leisure: the computers are disconnected, and getting emails onto the connected computer is a challenge enough. We thought we might transfer update files to the connected computer using a protocol that can handle repeated connection drops (e.g. FTP with resume.) Then we'd manually apply the update files to the disconnected computers. Does any AV software support this? Is there a better solution?

More specifically, I would allow updates through a PUT on the resource, but what should I allow in the body of the PUT request? Always the complete structure of the resource? I am new to Ruby on Rails and I have a (maybe naive) question: I want to implement reflection of direct SQL Updates of the underlying database in an ActiveRecord (and finally in the generated html). By "direct updates" I mean updating the database bypassing the ActiveRecord methods, for example by MySQL console. I guess here MySQL triggers could be used that would call some stored procedure that would cause the appropriate ActiveRecord to be reloaded. Is there some automatic handling of this scenario in ActiveRecord/Ruby on Rails ? Did somebody implement this scenario ? Can somebody recommend using other MVC frameworks to reflect direct changes in mapped databases ?

  • Do you leave Windows Automatic Updates enabled on your production IIS server?

    If you were running a 24/7 website on Windows Server 2003 (IIS6). Would you leave the Windows automatic update feature enabled or would you turn it off? When enabled, you always get the latest security patches and bug fixes automatically as soon as they're available, which is the most secure choice. However, the machine will sometimes get automatically rebooted to apply the updates leading to a couple of minutes of downtime in the middle of the night. Also, I've seen rare occasions where the machine does not restart correctly resulting in further downtime. If auto updates are off, when do you apply the patches? I guess you have to use a load balancer with multiple web servers and rotate them out of the production site, apply patches manually, and put them back in. This can be logistically inconvenient when the load balancer is managed by a hosting company. You will also have machines in production that don't always have the latest security patches and you have to routinely spend time deciding which patches to apply and when.

    Suddenly doing updates into a few tables have gotten 10 times slower than they used to be. What are some good recommendations to determine root cause and optimization? Could it be that indexing certain columns are causing updates to be slow? Any other recommendations? I guess more important than guesses would be help on the process of identifying the root cause or metrics around performance. Is there anything in Fluent NHibernate that you can use to help identify the root cause of performance issues?
