• Best practice for assigning private IP ranges?

  Is it common practice to use certain private IP address ranges for certain purposes? I'm starting to look into setting up virtualization systems and storage servers. Each system has two NICs, one for public network access, and one for internal management and storage access. Is it common for businesses to use certain ranges for certain purposes? If so, what are these ranges and purposes? Or does everyone do it differently? I just don't want to do it completely differently from what is standard practice in order to simplify things for new hires, etc.

• Are there any statistics on the number of networks using Ethernet Jumbo frames?

  I am often told by Sales Engineers and Product managers that a Layer 2 Ethernet service is not fit for purpose if the maximum supported frame size is in the 1518-1522 range (enough to support standard Ethernet frames or VLAN tagged frames). Or in other words: an MTU of 1500 is not enough (see this blog post for my definition of MTU and a short rant on how the term is often misused) I am never able to get any details from them on: a) What proportion of customers (Enterprise / SMB) require Jumbo frames b) What are typical expectations on frame size for Jumbos on WAN links? 1600, 2000, 9k, etc... I know that in Telco and Data Centre environments Jumbos are pretty common, but I am after some insight as to how common this is within Enterprise and SMB networks.

  I would like to know if we can setup an Active-Active IIS Cluster using Windows Cluster services that shares a common storage to store web content and WITHOUT the use of Windows NLB. I'm aware that this may not be a best practice or not a recommended setup, however, the setup is to be configured as below: Two web servers running IIS 7.5 (needs a common storage for web content) for HA and another set of two servers for sql cluster in active-passive mode for HA. Also is it possible to enable ARR on 2 node active-active IIS cluster for load balancing http requests? Appreciate if someone replies with both pros & cons of the setup.

• Windows Explorer slow response when disconnect from the network

  As a Systems Admin I have seen this issue repeatedly and it drives me crazy. Basically the problem occurs when you open My Documents or My Computer (Windows Explorer) there is a big delay ranging from 5-25 seconds before it actually opens and shows the content. Sometimes the problem continues with each subfolder you open. The problem is most common when disconnected from the network and when you have mapped drives. The most common solution for this problem is to disconnect any mapped drives or printers that are discconected/not reaachable. I have also heard that turning off "Automatically search for network folders and printers" can solve this issue but I have yet to see this work. Does anyone know of any other work arounds for this?

• How can I make gitosis distinguish between two users with the same username

  I have a gitosis system that seems to be working correctly except for a common problem we run into where I can't distingush permissions between two users who have the same username, but different hosts. For example: [email protected] 's SSH key is in the key folder. And so is [email protected] 's SSH is also in the key folder. These two jsmith's are two different people on two different computers. However, when I configure them in the gitosis.conf file with the usernames jsmith@computer or jsmith@machine, it seems like each user just gets the same permission. Can gitosis not distinguish the full username (name and host)? If not, how do I deal with multiple users accessing our system with common usernames? Thanks for any help.

• firefox addons and their silly news tabs

  Something like 30% of the addons I have in firefox update every other week and feel the need to pop open a tab about how awesome they are and all the cool things they changed. I just don't care at all and I'm very annoyed by these news tabs. When firefox opens, I want to see my home page. I've been looking for an addon to disable or kill them before I even have to look at them. Rather like addblock-for-addons. Short of finding a plugin that disables them, I'm seeking information about common interfaces so I can try to figure it out on my own. I'm wondering if I could do it in greasemonkey somehow. For example, is there something common about the url for the tabs?

  Ok...so for some reason by Ubuntu 10.04 partition won't startup anymore. I'm not exactly sure what I did. I have the feeling that I accidentally removed some important packages. However, when I try to install them, for example: sudo apt-get install libisc44 I get some response that this package is missing and/or it may be part of another package. • Virtual hosting all resolving to the same files

  I'm trying to set up virtual hosts on my VPS (centos). I set both domain nameservers to fns1.dnspark.net and fns2.dnspark.net and set an A record there for each domain pointing to my IP address 50.16.219.8. Both domains are currently resolving to the first virtual host. What am I doing wrong? Thanks! • Does lighter wallpaper consumes lesser power than a Darker one

  My VAIO advised me to switch to a White Background, to reduce power consumption. But it seems contradictory to common logic. Its like saying a brighter Torch consuming less than a dimmer one. Common Logic says that, Screen is BLACK when not using any POWER, so displaying black color should not consume any power (because without powering any pixel it gives black color) Also a white screen gives me more light than a darker one, so it should use more Energy. White Wallpaper = More Light Output = More Electrical Energy Consumed Black Wallpaper = Less Light = Less Electricity Consumed My question is - Is there anything wrong with the above argument ? A Lighter Wallpaper consumes less power than a Darker one. Is it true ? If yes, Why ?

  A common use of Excel is to create a spreadsheet which functions as a transaction ledger of some kind, where one or more fields in each row is calculated by adding a value or values from the current row to a value from the previous row. For example, if column C holds the value of a transaction and column D holds the balance, then the formula in row D3 might be =D2+C3. This formula would be repeated for every row in the ledger.   The title of the question is confusing, and does not explain my point well. I've always used Ubuntu server from version 10.04 and never had problem, now I have 4 machines with ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS installed on them and I found that under any circumstances where there is a high burden throws me a problem and machine crashes constantly. the most common is CPU#X stuck for Ns! Now I wonder if the administration of Debian is equal to that of ubuntu, regarding Servicos, packages, folders structure for example I would like to know if the services are installed in the same manner using invoke-rc.d, which handles additional security, including for not giving blind caning. I've been looking for a comparison chart but have not found anything yet, something between Debian 6.0.6 and Ubuntu 12.04 also the most common "hiccups" when you install the system

  Dear Sirs, I'm trying to run a java process via Powershell in Windows XP. Here's the command: java.exe -cp .;./common.jar -Dcontext=atest1 -Dresourcepath=. DW_Install So, the classpath is . and .\common.jar (I think java takes the wrong slashes, right?) There are two environment variables, one "atest1" the other "." and the class to execute main on is DW_Install (in the default package). This command works in cmd.exe, but doesn't is PS. • PHP 5 will not work in Centos 6 for me

  Just created a new install of Centos 6.0 64-bit on a virtual machine and running on Vmware workstation 8, windows host. yum install php service httpd restart And when trying to run a html file from the var\www\html dir which just has <?php phpinfo(); ?> in it or pointing browser to localhost. Nothing comes up. Also opened up httpd.conf and added: AddType application/x-httpd-php .php AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps Tried reinstalling, installing php-common, then php etc. to no avail. Otherwise going for the typical LAMP. installed: php.x86_64 5.3.2-6.el6_0.1 @updates php-cli.x86_64 5.3.2-6.el6_0.1 @updates php-common.x86_64 5.3.2-6.el6_0.1 @updates Yet to update to Centos 6.1 PHP5 is probably comes installed by default with Centos and I maybe stuffed it up by running yum install php?

• Tracking costs within one AWS account

  I have what I'm sure is a very common problem. Our company has many projects and groups working for different clients. We do a lot of our development work in the cloud and deploy our solutions there. We have a VPC set up that isolates projects from each other in their own subnet and that VPC is getting a hardware VPN connection back to HQ. We need to keep track of the cost run up by every project. The way I currently implement this is by providing my own tools for starting and stopping instances which log which user (and thus which project) to bill the instance too. This works okay for BoxUsage costs but not for other costs. I could create a separate account for each project and use consolidated billing, this I think would allow me to pay once but track costs per "project", but I would then not be able to share common resources (like bring account B's running instances inside the same VPC). Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers C
