• Back up Windows 2008 SBS to iSCSI disk

  I've almost no experience with SBS 2008, so please excuse my noob question! SBS 2008 only has the most basic backup utility built in as far as I can tell (similar to Vista), and it will only back up to physical volumes. I've read that you can set up a batch task to backup to a network volume, but right now I just need to get something deployed ASAP. We have an iSCSI target with plenty of free space. Is it worth backing up to an iSCSI target? Or am I wasting my time? If I need to do a recovery from the iSCSI disk, how would I go about it?

• Media Temple-like hosting services?

  I have a couple of wordpress sites which do not get much traffic now, but I plan on expanding to something like a 1000-2000visits/day in a year or two. Media Temple has some really nice offerings, but their Wordpress plan is 20/month...which is a little too much, seeing as at this point my site is more of a hobby than a money making machine. I currently host with HostGator (just switched from GodaddyiPageBluehost). All these cheaper/pop hosting services are okay, but it would be nice to find something a little bit more "premium", but at a lower cost than MT. Anyone know anything worth looking at?

• Apache mod_jk replacing mod_rewrite rules

  We have a slightly complex Apache 2.2 setup in front of a Tomcat 6.0 instance. The main Tomcat webapp is deployed in: /opt/tomcat/webapps/ROOT But we also have static content that we update semi-regularly. We didn't want to force a new build and deploy of the webapp, so that's stored separately in folders like: /opt/tomcat/webapps/css /opt/tomcat/webapps/foo /opt/tomcat/webapps/bar To handle this from Apache, we use mod_rewrite and rules look something like the following: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^/css/(.*)$ - [L] RewriteCond ROOT/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^/css/(.*)$ ROOT/$1 [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^(.*)\.(jpg|png|html|js)$ - [L] RewriteCond ROOT/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^(.*)\.(jpg|png|html|js)$ - [L] RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://localhost:8080/$1 [P,L] ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8080/ I now think I might want to start using mod_jk and I have two questions: Is it even worth using mod_jk? • RemoteApp Security Warning

  I have a Windows 2012 Standard x64 RemoteApps RDWeb portal where I can launch apps. We have one remote app in particular which is RDP (mstsc.exe). Whenever a user launches it, they receive three different prompts--the second one is this alert (shown below). How can I get rid of this alert? I have other RemoteApps launching as well, and they do not throw errors or alerts like this one. And they are applications with the .exe extension, so I do not understand what is so unique about the RDP RemoteApp that would cause this alert. One thing perhaps worth mentioning is this particular RDP remote app points directly to the mstsc.exe executable residing on a particular session host/terminal server (as shown in the "From" value of the warning). As such, a gateway server would not be used to load-balance and choose the RDP client launched from a session host at random. This RDP RemoteApp is explicitly associated with one particular terminal server.

• How to change MySQL data directory?

  I want to place my databases in another directory, so I can store them in an ESB (elastic block storage, just a fancy name for a virtualized harddisk) together with my web-apps and other persistent data. I have tried to walk through a tutorial at http://crashmag.net/change-the-default-mysql-data-directory-with-selinux-enabled. Everything seems fine until I type this command: # semanage fcontext -a -t mysqld_db_t "/srv/mysql(/.*)?" Then the command fails and tells me that mysqld_db_t is an invalid SELinux context even if the default MySQL data directory is labelled with this context. I am running Fedora 15 on Virtualbox (behaves like an ordinary x86-compatible box) and Amazon EC2 (based on Xen) so the tutorial should be compatible. It is also worth to mention that turning off SELinux globally or just for the MySQL process is not an option, because such a solution will decrease the security of the system if a hacker gains access to the system via the MySQL server. I have never seen this problem before I changed to the Redhat/Fedora architecture, so it could be a distribution specific issue. Any help is highly appreciated

  I was looking for a way to display a usage agreement page in browsers that users must agree to before they are allowed to access the internet. This would be for users on public computers and public/open wifi. I'm using a sonicwall firewall which does support this feature, however, there is a rediculously low character limit which makes it impractical to use. I thought about setting the browser's homepage to a usage agreement page, but that can easily be bypassed by navigating to somewhere else. Are there any other approaches that may be worth considering? There is currently no server in place on the public network, though I can set one up if need be.

• How to sniff for wireless MAC addresses in area - My laptop got stolen

  A few days ago my apartment got broken in, and they took all the electronics, including my $1500 laptop. We are pretty sure it's an inside job (as in someone from the same building), so I believe that the stuff is in someones apartment. Is there any tool that tells you what wireless adapters are active within range? I have my laptops MAC address, so I could use that to find out who stole it. I think it's worth a shot. • Unable to copy files previously extracted from archives created on a Mac, even after claiming ownership

  I reinstalled Windows on my computer today, and backed up my music to a USB drive. Now, I'm trying to copy the files onto my fresh Windows partition, but I'm unable to copy files that I obtained within my previous Windows installation from zip archives created on Macs. When I try to copy those previously-extracted files, I get an error saying that I need permission from S-1-5-21-...-1000 (a bizarre long ID). The first thing I tried was to take ownership of the files by setting my new user account as the owner, but that resulted in errors saying that I need permission from myself! Some Googling suggested adding antivirus suggestions, so I excluded the relevant folders from Microsoft Security Essentials, but the issue persists. For what it's worth, it seems that some program (so far I've only installed Chrome, Microsoft Security Essentials, and the latest Windows updates) created an empty folder named 601c8c7f0e0c03f725 at the root of my external USB hard drive. What gives?

• Bad I/O scheduler?

  os: up-to-date Fedora 14. Working as a "normal desktop". It's doing very well, but if i start VirtualBox, and e.g.: install a guest on it, it just "freezez". I mean if there are disk activities on a VirtualBox guest, then the computer becomes unrespondable..even the mouse is laggin for about 50 minutes.. What could be the bottleneck? What could be the problem? If anyone has any tips/howtos to speed it up, please help! It has a normal 2,5" HDD, with 5400 RPM. Does it worth for me if i buy a 2,5" HDD with 7200 RPM? T7200 cpu, 4 GByte RAM, "vm.swappiness = 0". Thank you!

• How to share media stored in an attached drive using Windows Media Player?

  We've got a Windows 7 PC with a Windows Media Player music library that includes both files on the internal hard drive and files on a USB-attached hard drive. When we browse this library from another Windows Media Player (on another Windows 7 machine) we see only the files residing on the library host's internal drive. The files residing on the attached drive don't show up at all, yet on the host they appear undistinguished within the library. Is there a configuration change we can make to cause the attached files to be shared properly? We've turned on read-sharing for "Everyone" on the USB drive, but that hasn't helped. Also it might be worth noting that this issue behaves the same way for us if the client machine is a Playstation 3.

  Just Googling for "windows ramdisk" returns a lot of stuff; some free, some paid. Can someone recommend a good one? (I'm willing to pay, but only if it's really worth paying for.) Here's what I'm looking for: Works on XP and Vista Supports 64 bit and 32 bit I'd like it to support more than 2GB of space (is that even possible on a 32 bit operating system?) I think I want something that can avoid swapping the ramdisk pages. (Though swapping would give me more free space; maybe I'll want to swap the ramdisk pages eventually? Is this configurable?)

• Forcing logon to Air Watch server upon joining wifi

  I'm setting up a wireless controller that I would like to leave as unsecured. When a user connects to this network they need to be forwarded to a specific page where they can authenticate with the Air Watch system they have in place. Once authentication takes place, a profile will be downloaded to their device and we can administer the devices accordingly. I'm mulling over how I can force the page to the user when they log in. The methodology I'm thinking about working with is creating a NAT rule for that VSC that would forward all port 80 and 443 traffic to the airwatch server. Once they authenticate, a profile will be downloaded which will connect the devices to an Virtual Access Point who's SSID isn't broadcasted. Is this methodology correct or can someone think of an easier / more efficient way of accomplishing this? The controller is an HP MSM720 for what it's worth.

• pfSense + DDoS Protection

  I run a gaming community on a colo with a 100Mbps port. I want to buy a very cheap 35 dollar server with the same 100Mbps port, and run pfSense to use as a hardware firewall. I'm dealing with a bunch of 14 year old kids that have access to botnets, so it can become a bit necessary to get something like this. My overall question, is using pfSense on a cheap identical datacenter/port speed server worth it to actually block DDoS attacks? A bit more into detail since I assume you will ask this, the attacks we receive are normally around 1Gbps. We currently run CentOS using CSF Firewall, and even when using a software firewall, we block 500Mbps UDP floods, or just generic attacks pretty easily. Thanks, - Necro

• How can I have Windows 8 go to the desktop by default?

  I've played around a smidge with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in a VirtualBox VM and I think the improvements under the hood may be worth tolerating the Metro UI crap. I don't like that the entire screen changes to something I don't care about when I hit the Windows key and start typing but I can deal with it. The one thing I cannot stand, though, is that it starts in the Metro interface by default. I have to hit the "Desktop" tile to get to a normal interface, and while I can hit "escape" to go back to the desktop and dismiss Metro, it doesn't work when you first log in. When you first log in, you have to hit that "Desktop" tile. I know that the Enterprise versions of Windows 8 will go to the desktop by default. I don't know but I would assume that there's probably some registry key that would handle this. Has anyone figured that out yet?

• Proper use of disk to disk to tape backup using de-duplication and LTO5

  I currently have ~12TB of data for a full disk to tape (LTO3) backup. Needless to say, it's now requiring over 16 tapes so I'm looking at other solutions. Here is what I've come up with. I'd like to hear the community's thoughts. Server for Disk-to-Disk BackupExec 2010 Using De-duplication Technology 20+TB worth of SATA drives LTO5 robotic library connected via SAS 1Gbps NIC connected to network What I envision is doing a full backup of my entire network which will initially take a long time over the 1Gbps NIC but once the de-duplication kicks in backups should be quick. I will then use the LTO5 to make disk to tape backups and archive those accordingly. What does everyone think? Any faster way of doing the initial full backup over the 1Gbps NIC? What will be my pain points? Is there a better way of doing what I'm trying to achieve?

• Monitor for HD video editing

  I have been researching for days and nights on a good monitor to buy for a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon 2600 XT (256mb). It will be used extensively for HD video editing (1080p) and photo editing, and likely also digital/3D animation next year(a lot of FCP + CS4). I am a student, so money is a little bit of an issue, but I want something that I'll be able to use semi-professionally after I'm done school, and am willing to finance something if it is worth the cost. I'm HOPING for something under $1000 though. The IPS Ultrasharps from Dell seem to be getting good reviews from other video editors. Accurate colour correction is a concern for me (hopefully something that covers Adobe spectrum), as well as a decent response time, HD resolutions, and DVI port. Also something with good gradient/definition in black areas, as this is difficult for editing on most LCDs. 1X1 pixel, brightness, good DVD playback etc. Hopefully this is not impossible to find for under $2000!

  Good day, I'm running an Apache2 server in front of a Tomcat and I need to implement a DDOS protection mechanism on the Apache2 layer. I have two candidates: mod_evasive and mod_security2 with the OWASP core rule set. Mod_security is already installed for overall protection, but the question is: is it worth adding mod_evasive besides mod_security just for the DDOS (does it have any major advantages) or the OWASP crs rules in the /experimental_rules/ directory (modsecurity_crs_11_dos_protection.conf) provide the same protection? • Epson XP-600 will not print properly with all new ink recently installed

  I just installed brand new Epson 273 ink cartridges ($64 worth!) in my Epson XP-600 printer. One box had all the colors plus black, and one had the fatter black cartridge. I am not getting ANY black print on paper, although, when I lift the cartridges out, they show ink inside. Now the yellow is saying LOW though all cartridges are less than 2 weeks old. I only use this printer sparingly—not for business or work reasons. I am ready to scream, as the ink cost almost as much as the actual printer (which is barely 7 months old)! Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

• Performance difference between compiled and binary linux distributions/packages

  I was searching a lot on the internet and couldn't find an exact answer. There are distros like Gentoo (or FreeBSD) which does not come with binaries but only with source code for packages (ports). The majority of distros uses binary backages (debian, etc.). First question: How much speed increase can I expect from compiled package? How much speed increase can I get from real world packages like apache or mysql? i.e. queries per second? Second question: Does binary package means it does not use any CPU instructions that was introduced after first AMD 64bit CPU? With the 32bit packages does it mean that the package will run on 386 and basically does not use most of the modern CPU instructions? Additional info: - I am not talking about desktop, but server environment. - I dont care about compile time - I have more servers, so speed increase more than 15% is worth for using source code packages - Please no flamewars. • iChat can't authenticate to Lion Server 10.7.2 [migrated]

  I've enabled iChat and iCal Server through our local 10.7.2 Server which has DNS set up correctly. I can add the server account via a client's System Preferences (under other - Mac OS X server) and it authenticates with my shortname correctly. However, when I load iChat, I get this error message: Where the account is [email protected]. The password and username is correct. Console throws this error: 22/11/11 3:03:31.135 PM imagent: [Warning] XMPPConnection: Error: Error Domain=XMPPErrorDomain Code=105 "The operation couldn?t be completed. (XMPPErrorDomain error 105.)" UserInfo=0x7f81bbe2a3e0 {XMPPErrorText=service requested for unknown domain} DNS is set up correctly (it's working for Profile Management, Software Update Server and Web Services) but I can't get iChat to work correctly. How can I get clients to authenticate? FYI: It's probably worth noting that I get the exact same error messages when I use [email protected] instead of [email protected]. • XPS vs PDF. What's the status?

  XPS, the PDF alternative, seems to be almost dead in the water. That said, Windows 7 offers a built-in XPS printer and viewer. I believe Vista also offers a built-in printer. XPS seems lighter than PDF, perhaps it only appears so because of Adobe's bloated reader, but that's for another discussion. Is it worth it to begin encoding in XPS instead of PDF? Will Vista or above be able to read it without problems? What should I look out for?

• Can I repair a short circuiting problem in a Dell Inspiron 6000 that occurs when it is picked up?

  I have a couple of Dell Inspiron 6000 notebooks that work perfectly fine unless you pick them up by one corner (as most people would). When you lift the notebook it flexes slightly and the notebook shorts out. Sometimes even a gentle bump will cause this to happen. So far the notebook always starts back up without issue, but this behavior is...inconvenient. It occurred to me that someone familiar with the innards might be able to suggest a little MacGyver fix for this. A little electrical tape in the right spot or something like that. Or perhaps this is a common problem and the answer is here, waiting for me to stumble on the correct keywords. I would appreciate any suggestions Note: It is probably worth mentioning that I have disassembled a Dell notebook before to replace a bluetooth card so I comfortable opening up the systems.

• Per-machine decentralised DNS caching - nscd/lwresd/etc

  Preface: We have caching resolvers at each of our geographic network locations. These are clustered for resiliency and their locality reduces the latency of internal requests generated by our servers. This works well. Except that a vast quantity of the requests seen over the wire are lookups for the same records, generated by applications which don't perform any DNS caching of their own. Questions: Is there a significant benefit to running lightweight caching daemons on the individual servers in order to reduce repeated requests from hitting the network? Does anyone have experience of using [u]nscd, lwresd or dnscache to do such a thing? Are there any other packages worth looking at? Any caveats to beware of? Besides the obvious, caching and negative caching stale results.

• Incremental backups in Quickbooks 2005

  My church uses Quickbooks 2005. They have a backup to a 512 MB thumbdrive. They have been backing up about every week for the past 18 months. The filesize of the backups have grown from 14 MB to about 23 MB. I was planning on giving them a 1 or 2 GB thumb drive and calling it a day, but when I dumped this info into Excel and projected out the growth rate, I found that we'll hit 1 GB in July, and 10 GB in about another 18 months, and then 100 GB about 18 months after that. It looks to me like Quickbooks saves all the transactions with every backup. Is there a way to force incremental backups? If this is the way it is, that's fine, but I'd rather not keep buying another order of magnitude of storage space every 18 months. Can I safely delete the previous backups, and just keep the recent 2 or 3 months worth? Thanks.
