  • How can I display additional boot and shutdown information on the Windows 7 welcome screen?

    There is a small tweak, I believe it is a registry key, that allows to display additional information on the Welcome and Shutting down screens of Windows 7 (and most likely Vista, too). I have activated this tweak on one of my systems; unfortunately I forgot how I did it, and I can't seem to find the website that originally gave me that information. Usually, the Windows 7 welcome screen will just display "Welcome" when logging in. With the tweak activated, my Welcome screen gives status information such as "Loading user settings" or "Preparing desktop". When shutting down, the default screen simply says "Shutting down". With the tweak activated, it gives additional status information such as "Stopping Windows services". This appears the same way that Windows gives information when updates are installed or configured during the startup or shutdown procedure, and I find them quite helpful in getting a feel for what task takes how long during that process. The only setting I was able to find is the Boot log checkbox on the Boot tab of the msconfig application. However, this results in Windows displaying console logs of drivers it is loading, etc., instead of the animated Windows title. This is NOT the setting I am looking for. The "additional boot information" setting that I have activated on this system still displays the regular animated Windows logo, and only replaces the strings displayed on the blue Welcome and Shutdown screens. Could someone direct me to the registry key (or whatever setting) that is used to get this behaviour?   • How to Eliminate Tape Backup and Off-site Storage Service?

    PLEASE READ UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM. THANKS! ;) Environment Info (all Windows): 2 sites 30 servers site #1 (3TB of backup data) 5 servers site #2 (1TB of backup data) MPLS backbone tunnel connecting site #1 and site #2 Current Backup Process: Online Backup (disk-to-disk) Site #1 has a server running Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 with four 1TB USB 2.0 disks. BE jobs for full backups run nightly on all servers in site #1 to these disks. Site #2 backs up to a central file server there using software they already had when we purchased them. A BE job pulls that data nightly to site #1 and stores them on said disks. Off-site Backup (tape) Connected to our backup server is a tape drive. BE backs up the external disks to tape once a week which gets picked up by our off-site storage company. Obviously we rotate two tape libraries, one is always here and one is always there. Requirements: Eliminate the need for tape and off-site storage service by doing disk-to-disk at each site and replicating site #1 to site #2 and vice versa. Software based solution as hardware options have been too pricey (ie, SonicWall, Arkeia). Agents for Exchange, SharePoint, and SQL. Some Ideas So Far: Storage DroboPro at each site with an initial 8TB of storage (these are expandable up to 16TB at present). I like these because they are rackmountable, allow disparate drives, and have iSCSI interfaces. They are relatively cheap too. Software Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 already has all the agents and licenses we need. I'd like to keep using it unless there is a better solution, similarly priced, that does everything BE does plus deduplication and replication. Server Because there is no more need for a SCSI adapter (for tape drive) we are going to virtualize our backup server as it is currently the only physical machine save for SQL boxes. Problems: When replicating between sites we want as little data as possible to go across the pipe. There is no deduplication or compression in what I have laid out here so far. The files being replicated are BE's virtual tape libraries from our disk-to-disk backup. Because of this each of those huge files will go across the wire every week because they change every day. And Finally, the Question: Is there any software out there that does deduplication, or at least compression, to handle just our site-to-site replication? Or, looking at our setup, is there any other solution that I am missing that might be cheaper, faster, better? Thanks. Sorry so long. UPDATE 2: I've set a bounty on this question to get it more attention. I'm looking for software that will handle replication of data between two sites using the least amount of data possible (either compression, deduplication, or some other method). Something similar to rsync would work but it needs to be native to Windows and not a port involving shenanigans to get up and running. Prefer a GUI based product and I don't mind shelling out a few bones if it works. Please, answers that meet the above criteria only. If you don't think one exists or if you think I'm being to restrictive keep it to yourself. If after seven days there is no answer at all, so be it. Thanks again everyone.   • Using two Cisco Aironet 1100's

    Is it possible to use two of these both providing connectivity to the same network name for additional signal by having one plugged into a hot data port and having the other only powered by the AC? It seems to have worked for one day, then it stopped and I have the middle light blinking, and the other "hot" one solid in the middle and flashing rapidly on the last light.

  • Windows repair console, impossible?

    I found an old Windows XP SP2 in my -trash- cd can and tried it on a 30 GB FAT32 partition. Installation went fine till the copying operation was completed and XP asked for reboot. After that either it starts over again or throws invalid disk. Starting over is an infinite loop the only way I see is to choose the "Repair console" but I'm not used to a DOS box. Can anyone help me through this harmful installation?

    Why are some 32 bit PNGs opened in Photoshop with Indexed Colors and no transparency? For instance, I grabbed a png icon file of the Stack Overflow logo at: http://blog.stackoverflow.com/wp-content/uploads/icon-so.png When opening it in Photoshop CS3, it apparently treats it as indexed color and gets rid of the alpha channel. The image on the right is a screen grab of the icon. Changing the Image mode in Photoshop to RGB doesn't change the image at all. I've tried this with a few other PNGs and it seems hit or miss. When viewed in other programs, it displays fine. left:png opened in Photoshop, right:screen grab of png from browser What gives?, does Photoshop not interpret the PNG file format correctly?

  • Hyper-V Ubuntu 10.04, Filesystem suddenly becomes Read-Only?

    We are running a Ubuntu 10.04 VM on a Hyper-V system, The VM is dedicated to running one of our web applications. We have enabled the Hyper-V drivers in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules like so: hv_vmbus hv_storvsc hv_blkvsc hv_netvsc And updated the kernel image like so: $ update-initramfs -u And all was good... until.. This morning i got a support request that our web application was throwing an error 500, so i checked the logs and nothing was there. Then I remembered that I had seen this on another of our ubuntu servers so I... $ touch foo.txt And my suspicions were confirmed: touch: cannot touch `foo.txt': Read-only file system Why is the filesystem randomly becoming readonly? Is this only in Ubuntu on HV? Is it a problem on RedHat or Cent?

The app worked fine, but the workers were never working. I'd like upstart to do something (send an email) if it can't start this job, since it's not entirely obvious if everything went alright. Is there something built into upstart to handle this, or do I have to get creative?

  • File not updating in symlink'd folder in IIS

    I have the following setup: Site1/Shared/ - Physical folder Site2/Shared/ - symlink using mklink to Site1/Shared I've updated a javascript file in Site1/Shared/scripts, and the change is being reflected on Site1. However, the change is not being reflected through IIS on Site2. When I open Site1/Shared/scripts/common.js and Site2/Shared/scripts/common.js, they match exactly. But when I view the files through Safari, Firefox, Chrome, IE, from any machine (even machines that have never visited the sites), the change is not reflected on Site2. Here are URLs to the files to review: Site 1: http://www.landsofamerica.com/shared/scripts/common.js Site 2: http://www.landsoftexas.com/shared/scripts/common.js These files look exactly the same when logged onto the server, and the shared folder under landsoftexas.com is a symlink created using mklink to the shared folder under landsofamerica.com. Any idea what might be causing IIS to serve the wrong file?

  • Am I getting the right memory for my motherboard?

    Hi technophiles; I have a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS motherboard. Also, the memory that came with my computer was two Transcend aXe RAM 1066MHZ 1GB modules. The thing is, I noticed that my motherboard has "DDR2 1200" written on it. This concerns me, have I bought slower memory than my computer is supposed to have ideally? Now, I'm not super concerned at a granular level about the best optimal RAM with the best CAS latency etc... but I do hope at least that I've got the right speed. Now, as far as I know, there is no such thing as ram at 1200MHZ? Am I right? You see, because I'm thinking of getting more RAM now, before I can't find the same type or speed any-more and just want to make sure it's the right thing. Furthermore, if the memory is slower than what I should be getting for my motherboard, what RAM should I be getting, and will that new RAM play nice with my old RAM? If I get new RAM at a different speed, would it be better / more beneficial performance-wise to omit the old RAM because of how the whole DUAL channel RAM thing works? I'm not too clued up on this area. Thanks chiefs.

I know how install Debian with LVM at beginning, but in this case I can't install the system at beginning because the provider gets me a server with remote access and the system installed in this way. How can I change that partitions using only an ssh connection and possibly other remote server where to put some temporal data?

  • Dangers of Running Computers w/o Air Conditioning

    I recently moved in to an apartment with out air conditioning. This is fine most of the time as I am in upstate New York. It only ever gets above the high 70s during the hottest of the summer months. And when it does, I'm stubborn enough that I'll just deal with wearing minimal clothing around the house. However, I'm worried about my computers. I'm a software developer and gamer, so many of my machines are very high powered. And at least one of them is a server that must be left on 24/7 (not just a game server - also serves multiple websites). I've never before had to worry about the heat too much, as I always lived in buildings with central air. The in building temperature rarely got much above 70 F. All of the machines I built had good enough air cooling that I never saw a problem. Now the temperature in building is pushing 100F and I'm worried that the machines will not be able to keep themselves cool enough by simply blowing already hot air over themselves. The hottest of them I've turned off. However, the server I cannot. It's an old Dell (not custom build) that runs on a Pentium 4 (2.2GHz). It only has a single hard drive, integrated video. And it'd not running any processor intensive servers. Just basic LAMP. It used to run a MUD server, but that's off for now. So it should be idling most of the time. I haven't been able to find any sort of built in temperature sensors in the hardware... at least not any that the programs I've found in the Debian repository can read. And it's an inherited machine to which I do not have the full specs, so I don't know the tolerances anyway. How worried should I be about it melting down on me? How worried should I be about the hard drive melting or becoming corrupted? To generalize the question for other people, what are the safe temperature tolerances for most machines. How widely does it vary, and how does one go about determining when their machine is running too hot and needs to be shut down?

    I've gone into the Directory Utility on the mac, clicked on the services tab, entered the Active Directory Domain and Computer ID, clicked the Bind button and it showed a little status label which flickered through 5 of 5 steps and then said "An unknown error occurred". If I ignore the error and just click the OK button further down the screen and make sure the Active Directory service is ticked in the list of services, then go to the Directory Servers tab and try to add an Active Directory by entering my ad domain, computer id, admin username and password I get an error "Unable to add the domain. An unexpected error of type -14090 (eDSAuthFailed) occurred." Any ideas?

    I currently have an issue with Windows Explorer. It keeps crashing when I browse through a network drive. This is happening on several computers.   • Stripping Non-Text from a Scanned, OCRd PDF

    I have a PDF created from a scanned document. OCR was used to recognize text. In Acrobat, if I select text, and click 'copy with formatting', I can paste the formatted text into Word, so it seems that fonts and colors are also embedded in the document in addition to just plain text and possibly the size. Is there any way to use this information to create a PDF that just contains the formatted OCRd text, without the scanned image. Currently, my document only shows the scanned image, and the text is on an invisible layer. I would like to create a PDF document that removes the image that was scanned, and displays the formatted text that is currently hidden. The following post has a section on "How can we make the invisible text visible?" PDF has an extra blank in all words after running through Ghostscript However, doing this does not show the correct text formatting (that is retained when pasting in Word), and I also would like to remove the scanned image so that the final PDF just contains formatted (color, font, size) vector fonts, and no images.

    My dad asked me how he could script the pasting/inclusion of images in various applications. I'm sure I could script out some quick <img src=... HTML but I believe he's also looking to do this in Windows GUI applications like Word or Outlook. So, how could I script a process with the following inputs and outputs: load_image_into_clipboard_script.cmd sample_file.jpg Clipboard now contains the aforementioned image file, just as if I'd e.g. opened it in Paint and done a Select All - Copy. I noticed there's a clip.exe utility with Vista/Win2003 and up; perhaps that will be a useful intermediary?

  • Unable to load type error in ASP.NET 4 application on Windows Server 2003 / IIS6 -- only happens after first worker process recycle

    I'm running an ASP.NET 4.0 web application on IIS6 (Windows Server 2003 x64). This app is one of many running on this server under the Default Web Site -- but is alone on it's own application pool because the other sites are all running ASP.NET 2.0 still. When I deploy my application, it works just fine until the application pool recycles or kills its worker process (by default 2 hours or 20 minutes with no activity). After this, I get the error: "Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. System.Reflection.ReflectionTypeLoadException: Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information." Refreshing the page, recycling the application pool, and iisreset do nothing. But, I can bring the site back online again for a little while by simply redeploying it.   • AviSynth ChangeFPS: combining videos with different framerates

    I have two video recordings of the same scene, but with different framerates, that I would like to combine using an AviSynth script. One video is recorded at 30fps, the other at 120fps. What I would like to do is to keep them temporally synchronised, meaning that for each frame of the 30fps video, the output should display 4 frames from the 120fps video. I would like the final output video to play at 30fps so that the duration is 4 times the original recordings. From AviSynth's documentation, it seems ChangeFPS is the function I'll need, since it removes and duplicates frames, while 'AssumeFPS' just changes the playback speed (and my plan is basically to quadruple every frame of the 30fps clip). However, the filter does not seem to do what it says. If I try: clip30 = AviSource("0326.avi").ChangeFPS(120) clip120 = AviSource("0326-120fps.avi") it doesn't affect the playback speed or frame count of the 30fps clip at all, but removes every fourth frame from the 120fps clip, which is not at all what I want. Unfortunately, appending .ChangeFPS(7.5) to the clip120 instead does not have the same inverse effect—in that case, it does exactly what's to be expected. Alternatively, if I try: clip30 = AviSource("0326.avi").AssumeFPS(7.5) clip120 = AviSource("0326-120fps.avi") there is no effect at all, both clips are played back at 30fps, meaning that only a quarter of the 120fps clip has been shown by the time the 30fps clip is over. So how can I combine these two clips in the manner I want? I was unable to find any other internal or external filters that would help me do that. It seems to me that if ChangeFPS did what the manual says, it would be the right one for the job.

    I would like to configure Forefront Threat Management Gateway (formerly ISA server) to impersonate a specific domain user for any anonymous request to a particular listener. For example, for any anonymous request to http://www.mycompany.com, I would like to serve up http://myinternal as though MYDOMAIN/GuestAccount were accessing the site. Is this even possible in ISA/TMG? If so, where do I go to configure this?
