• Looking for a good C++/.net book

  I have recently started to feel that I need to greatly improve my C++ skills especially in the realm of .net. I graduated from a good four year university with a degree in computer science about 9 months ago and I have since been doing full time contract work for a small software company in my local area. Most of my work has been done using Java/lisp/cocoa/XML and before that most of my programming in my senior year was in java/C#. I did a decent amount of C++ in my Sophomore year and in my free time before that but I feel that my general knowledge of C++/.net is very lacking for the opportunities that are now coming my way. Can anyone recommend a good book that could help me get up too speed? I feel I do not need a very basic introduction to C++ but something that covers the fundamentals of .net would be good for me. So basically what I need is a book or books that would be good for a .net novice and a C++ developer who is just beyond novice. Also, a book that would help bein an interview by giving me a conversional understanding of C++ would be great. Thanks a lot!.

• How to add "missing" columns in a column group in reporting services?

  Hello, I'm trying to create a report that displays for each months of the year the quantity of goods sold. I have a query that returns the list of goods sold for each month, it looks something like this : SELECT Seller.FirstName, Seller.LastName, SellingHistory.Month, SUM(SellingHistory.QuantitySold) FROM SellingHistory JOIN Seller on SellingHistory.SellerId = Seller.SellerId WHERE SellingHistory.Year = @Year GOUP BY Seller.FirstName, Seller.LastName, SellingHistory.Month What I want to do is display a report that has a column for each months + a total column that will display for each Seller the quantity sold in the selected month. Seller Name | Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec | Total What I managed to do is using a matrix and a column group (group on Month) to display the columns for existing data, if I have data from January to March, it will display the 3 first columns and the total. What I would like to do is always display all the columns. I thought about making that by adding the missing months in the SQL request, but I find that a bit weird and I'm sure there must be some "cleanest" solution as this is something that must be quite frequent. • Would like some modelling tips for dependent values

  I'm working on a model for a simple fishing competition and I have some issues with my design. The main class for the fishing game is Capture and it looks like this: public class Capture : Entity { public virtual int Weight { get; set; } public virtual int Length { get; set; } public virtual DateTime DateForCapture { get; set; } public virtual User CapturedBy { get; set; } public virtual Species Species { get; set; } } So far there´s no problem but I'm not really sure how to model the game. Every Species is connected to a reference weight that changes from year to year The number of point for a capture is its Weight divided by the current reference weight for the species. One way to solve the problem is to connect a capture to SpeciesReferenceWeight instead of Species public class SpeciesReferenceWeight : Entity { public virtual Species Species { get; set; } public virtual int ReferenceWeight { get; set; } public virtual int Year { get; set; } } But in that way that Capture is connected to the implementation details of the game and from my point of view a capture is still a capture even if it's not included in a game. • Array loading with doubles in C

There should be no problem when we initially encryption the column, but we have requirements that every year the Encryption Key needs to change. It seems that this requirement may be problem. Assumption: The table that includes the column that has sensitive data will have 500 million records. Below are the steps we have thought about implementing. During the encryption/decryption process is the data online, and also how long would this process take? Initially encrypt the column New Year Decrypt the column Encrypt the column with new key. This is on Server 2008 R2, my SQL database (on localhost) instance is named SQLEXPRESS. There is an instance of SQL Express 2008 on the system (hence client 10.0). The database is configured to use a trusted connection, and the .net desktop software deployed on our network PCs is able to access the database without any problem. Am I missing something obvious here, I've done a fair amount of searching for this error message, and haven't found anything that has been particularly useful so far.

• selective backup script in bash

  Hi, I've been using this simple command (that's all I can do :) to backup the whole tree from my user data in NAS server for a year. cp -r /STORAGE /BACKUP-STORAGE/YYYY-MM-DD Unfortunately, after a year of service. My user start filling the spaces with lot of photo and cliparts (jpg, gif, bmp) And that start to make my backup process get much slower. The space is also a big issue. Now I no longer have enough space for a week-long daily backup set. I think I want to change from backup everything to backup only non-image data. How can I exclude jpg, gif, and bmp from the backup ? It's quite easy with DOS XCOPY command, but I really have no idea how to do that in bash. Thanks

  I installed xampp back around January 2009, and CF8 to test coldfusion on my macbook (note: I do not think that this issue is related to CF, but only xampp). I only ever used the apache part of xampp, and this was working for over a year. In the last couple of months at the most I've started getting the following error message (even for none CF sites, and non .cfm pages, the error occurs for .html files..): Access forbidden! You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server. • IOMEGA 500GB hard disk data reccovery

  Last year by November I bought an IOMEGA 500GB Prestige hard disk. Yesterday, unfortunately the hard disk fell down from my table. After that incident, when I connect my disk, Windows asks me to format the disk to use, but I didn't format it yet. Actually, on that hard disk I have about 320GB of data. I tried all my possible ways to access my disk. I tried using DOS. It shows "data error (Cyclic redundancy check)". I have a 3 year warranty. Will I be covered under warranty if I report this issue to IOMEGA? Can I get my data back?

• AS2 Server Software Costs

  We're currently using Cleo LexiCom as our server software for receiving EDI transmissions via the AS2 protocol. We have 7 trading partners per year, and this runs us about $800/year for support from Cleo. We need to expand from 7 trading partners to 10 or so, and Cleo charges roughly $600 per new host, plus an expanded yearly support fee. My question(s) are: Does anyone know of a cheaper developer of AS2 server software, and perhaps one that doesn't charge per new host? Does anyone have any clue why we are being charged an upfront fee for new hosts, and if this is a standard practice for AS2 software providers? It seems really odd that we are required to pay upfront costs for this. I could completely understand an increase in the yearly support, however.

When A1 has the value 2009-08-01, then: =WEEKDAY(A1) will obtain 7 =TEXT(7, "dddd") will obtain Saturday =TEXT(7,"dddd, yyyy-mm-dd") will obtain Saturday, 1900-01-07 =TEXT(1,"dddd, yyyy-mm-dd") will obtain Sunday, 1900-01-01 =TEXT("1900-01-01","dddd, yyyy-mm-dd") will also obtain Sunday, 1900-01-01 The last two are wrong: the 1st of January 1900 is actually a Monday. • Notebook computer battery says: plugged in but not charging with no further information. Is the bat

  My 1.5 year old Dell Studio 15 notebook computer has a battery and I keep it attached to the notebook but 98% of the time I just plug in the power adapter. Lately when I unplugged the power adapter, the battery was only good for 10 minutes, and a few days ago, when I unplugged the power adapter, the computer simply turned off. When clicking on the battery icon on Win 7, it says "Plugged in, not charging": is the battery dead? Or can Win 7 have any option to not charge the battery? It is a Dell Studio 15, I wonder if in such case, it looks like it can be a manufacture's defect, would Dell replace the battery? (if there was a recall, then they probably would, i think). The notebook is 1.5 year old.

  Hi, I'm looking at buying a 3 year old blade server. My question is, if I buy it and want to insert a current model blade, will it fit? Also, if the chassis goes "POP" and I need to replace it, will the current model chassis fit 3 year old blades? What about Power supply replacements? The chassis I'm looking at is this: IBM FRU / PN: M8677-3XM with DVD reader The blades are all IBM HS20's. We've had a good run with IBM hardware and although there is some nice ex-lease HP hardware available, my understanding is that backwards comparability is not so well maintained. Is this true?

• Stability, x86 Vs Sparc

  Our project are plan to migrate from Sparc to x86, and our HA requirement is 99.99%, previous on Sparc, we assume the hardware stability would like, hardware failure every 4 month or even one year, and also we have test data for our application, then we have requirement for each unplanned recovery (fail over) to achieve 99.99% (52.6 minutes unplanned downtime per year). But since we are going to use Intel x86, it seems the hardware stability is not so good as Sparc, but we don't have the detail data. So compare with Sparc, how about the stability of the Intel x86, should we assume we have more unplanned downtime? If so, how many, double? Where I can find some more detail of this two type of hardware?

  In an Active Directory domain, if I configure a Windows service on a domain member computer to start with an AD user account (aka "ye olde service account",) and the then the service stays running but I don't restart the service or reboot the machine for a year... does the LastLogonTimestamp of the service account's user object continue to update? Edit: If you say "it depends on the service," then use MS SQL Server as an example. I set MSSQL Engine to run as contoso\sql-service. Then I leave it alone for a year.

• SLA Violations - Compensation expectations and vague contracts

  Tagging this as cautionary tale. I took over for an admin a year and a half ago, and reviewed the 3 year contract with our ISP. There were no specific SLA promises in the contract that I found, and have been meaning to review the contract with our rep. Of course, we had an outage this past week that resulted in almost four days of downtime !!!!! This involves eff-ups of epic proportions on our ISP's part and a telco they colocate with. Details can be provided. I am the network / systems / purchasing / and helpdesk at my company...and am willing to fight with the ISP. I also have more management that can get involved, including the name on the contract. First, if there are not concrete guarantees about compensation and downtime, we are screwed right? Two, if we want out of our contract, does anyone have experience going the legal route, and if so, who knows a lawyer? =)

Before I do the fresh install I want to create a Virtual Image of the laptop that I can keep and potentially run on my desktop machine should I ever need to access any of the old files/projects that it contains currently. I know that most people will say just copy the files over to your desktop, but my concern is the configuration of the laptop. I used to use it for development and it has older versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server, Active X controls etc, etc than I currently use so I really want to preserve the environment not just the files. So really I am asking what is the best tool-set/method to achieve this? I understand there are free VM tools available but I have never done this before and would appreciate any help.

• Nobody nogroup on ubuntu client with Solaris server

  I have an openIdiana server with ZFS and it has been shared with NFS on a ubuntu server (called server1) one year ago. Now i am asked to shared it on a second ubuntu server (called server2). So i have took the line in /etc/fstab from server 1 and add it in server2: 192.168.1.22:mypool/data/.zfs/snapshot /mnt/zfs nfs acl,intr,noatime 0 0 But when i mount it, the rights on server2 are "nobody nogroup" (connect as anonymous?!) whereas its ok on server1. And on my OpenIndiana, I haven't found where it is configured (its not me who configured it last year). So I have tried to set zfs set sharenfs=rw numpool/data but without success. So i am looking for a file like /etc/exports on Ubuntu to configure which server is allowed to connect, and not as anonymous. Any idea? thanks,

• VMware vSphere 4.1: host performance graphs show "No data available", except the realtime view, which works fine

  Here's our scenario: Site 1 has 3 hosts, and our vCenter server is here. Site 2 has 3 hosts. All hosts are ESXi 4.1 update 1. If I view the Performance tab for any host in Site 1, I can view realtime, 1 Day, etc., i.e. all the views give me graph data. For the hosts in Site 2, I can view the realtime graphs, 1 Day and 1 Week both say "No data available". 1 Month had mostly nothing, 1 Year shows that it was working fine for a long time and then started breaking. 1 Month view: 1 Year view: What would cause this loss of performance data?

• does any sync software find files that have moved paths within a folder?

  Say I have a pictures folder which I reorganized on one computer. I'd like to use that directory as the base and compare it with another version on a backup drive. Will any sync/compare program find that a file in one folder has moved locations within a compare folder. For instance say I reorganized my pictures from trips into folders by year with the trips folders inside each year folder. If I use a regular compare utility I wind up with two copies of everything that's moved in different locations.
