• Are there any home/soho NAS devices that will backup/sync to the cloud?

  Looking for a home office (SOHO) market (priced) network hard drive (NAS) that will sync some or all of its content to a cloud-based backup service. The only option I've been able to find so far is NetGear's [ReadyNAS Vault][1] however from what I've read it's not as secure as it could be, and the service is quite expensive ($200/yr for 50GB of cloud storage) - it's 'powered' by ElephantDrive Ideally would love to see something like Wuala integrated into a Lacie Network HDD - conveniently, I suspect this is in the works as Lacie recently acquired Wuala, however nothing has come of it yet. I know there are options to use rsync with a customizable NAS (such as the very versatile and hackable D-Link DNS-323, but the easier this is to setup and maintain, the better. Thanks! ps.   Possible Duplicate: Can I connect a SATA-II hard drive to a SATA-I connection? Hello everyone One of my system is really old, but I still use it, right now, the HDD is and old IDE drive that is starting to fail (I got to many damaged sectors) and I'm planing to replace it. The motherboard supports Serial ATA 1 and I have a real nice offer on a SATA 2 drive, can I use that drive on a SATA 1 interface (obviously with reduced speed) just like a USB 2.0 device on a 1.0 port? • Cannot upgrade to Lion using DVD

  When I first setup my MBP on 10.6 I made a lot of newb mistakes, and was unable to get Ruby on Rails to install, amongst a lot of other things. Because of this, I decided to backup everything on to a Time Machine HDD and re-install Lion. I had a bunch of problems but managed to sort them out, requiring me to go back to 10.6 from the original disc that came with the MBP. Before I did anything however, I burnt the Lion installer that I got from the App Store to a DVD. Now though, when I try to run it, I get the following: Cannot download additional components. I've managed to download software updates, so I know it can connect to the Apple servers.

• Recover Intel Matrix Raid Configuration

  Hello, I had 2 HDDs in Intel Matrix Raid configuration on a motherboard with intel ICH9R. I had some RAID 0 partitions and one RAID 1 partition. Somehow when replacing my videocard I partially unpulugged the power connector from one of the HDD. I booted and only one disk was showing. So I turned off the PC and correctly plugged the power connector and how both HDDs are showing as "Non-Raid Disk" Is there a way to restore the raid configuration from before ? In fact I don't really remember how my partitions where configured, I had 2x100Gb + 1x296Gb in RAID 0 and one 50Gb in RAID 1 (using 2x320Gb HDDs) but I'm not sure how many volumes and how the partitions where allocated on the volumes. Is there a tool to find that ? Thanks

• Random timeouts in IIS7

  Hi, I have a weird problem which I think is caused by my IIS7 installation on Vista 64 bit. I have a bunch of AJAX calls and JS dynamic file loads (~30) in a local application, and I get random timeouts (or so it seems) in my browser. In Chrome it looks like the page just stops loading (no HDD activity), in Firefox/Firebug I can see that some of the files are being loaded but they never actually finish. When I reload the page the same occurs, but for (random) other files that must be loaded. When I try to load one of those JS files concurrently (so during the timeout in FF) in another browser, the file loads there. So I am pretty sure the request can be handled by IIS. I am thinking about a limit or so on simultaneous requests from the same browser which is not working correctly, but I am pretty clueless on how to solve this. Does anyone recognize this problem and know a solution? Thanks!

• Is the motherboard the cause of these errors?

  Motherboard is : ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe, Rev1.01, On start up get: "cmos checksum error - defaults loaded" error BIOS is reset everytime and can't boot to Windows off HDD. POST report is ok once I tell it there is no Floppy drive attached and not to seek it. The boot sequence starts then just as get to load windows safe mode options whole PC shuts down. BIOS is reset to defaults again. I've checked the battery and jumpers. Tried a known working battery. Changed Graphics card, changed memory, changed HD to one without an OS. Disconnected DVD drive. PSU is known to be ok. IN BIOS CPU is recognised correctly and memory is also recognised ok. So is it likely to be a bad motherboard or corrupted BIOS or something else? Thanks :)

• Computer bluescreen-ing with 0x7A and 0xF4 errors

  Hiya, This computer is locking up for around 5-30 seconds before throwing Blue Screen of Death's with 0x7A and occasionally 0xF4 errors. The log files don't really show anything informative, and Windows Update doesn't show any new drivers for the HDD. Upon restart, it shows a "A disk error has occurred /n Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to continue", and to fix this I go into WinRE via the pendrive and run "bootsect /nt60 C: /force /mbr" and that seems to fix it so it boots. • New power supply and now HDDs are not recognized.

  So I upgraded to a new X4 ULTRA power supply that was recommended to me by a local TigerDirect store. After installing it along with a new liquid cooling system, I booted it up and it automatically fried my CD Drive. After that I noticed that the OS wouldn't start and figured out that none of the 4 HDDs in my computer were being recognized by the BIOS. I feel them spool at a steady pace and have tried new cables and connections but to no avail. I triple checked all of the connections and cables and have no idea what is wrong. This isn't the first time I changed a PS or CPU cooling system but I am at a dead end. Any ideas, aside from buying a USB HDD reader and seeing if they are all fried? Also, this is a stock Gateway mobo with the mobo USB connections already dead. Could the new PS have fried the SATA connections??

• Mutli-processor workstation as a workstation/server

  I work in a research institute and a number of programs we use are computationally intensive (I actually wrote one of them). Right now we have one computer that is dedicated for one of these programs (with local accounts only, as in users physically sitting in front of that pc) and the other programs are run on individual workstations assigned to people. I have been looking around to common brands such as Dell and HP, for a some sort of a small/medium scale server, which can be used as a workhorse by sending tasks remotely. It appears as if there is nothing in between workstations with one 6-core processor and a bunch of extras (like fancy graphics etc) and rack mount servers with ridiculous amount of RAM and HDD expansion capabilities but still relatively little number of processors/cores. I wonder if what I am looking for is such a small niche product? Are there other solutions that I might not be aware of? Does anyone know of a multi proc- multi-core workstation/server that is still within the reasonable

  At the moment I am running a Windows Terminal Server 2008 for around 10 clients that use the server to run programs and access data. Is there anyway to separate the resources of each user so that they do not impact each other in terms of resources. User 1: Opens program User 2: Notices slow down I have looked into using Windows System Resource Manager but do not know if it provides what I need and if there are any other 3rd party tools that also provide this functionality. • How low-power can a home server get?

  I've got quite simple question actually. How green, low-power and efficient x86 home server can I build using consumer parts with rather constrained budget. After looking through some Google hits I've found out that system based on dual-core atom, some modest mITX board (gigabit lan, integrated audio and gfx etc), one RAM module and one 'green' WD HDD, powered by picoITX PSU uses about 30W at idle up to 40 at load. Can you get lower (or how much lower) then that? Maybe some VIA nano chips, or single core atom? My home server would take care of some back-upping mixed with little ftp/http traffic.

• Resize primary partition

  I have a hdd with the folowing partition table 12Gb Primary Partition (ntfs) 140Gb Extended Partition (ntfs) I want to install windows 7 and I need more space for the Primary Partition. The problem is that when I resize partitons I obtain: 12Gb Primary Partition (ntfs) 110Gb Extended Partition (ntfs) 30Gb Free Space So I can't allocate the free space to primary partition because the free space is at the end of the disk. Is there a solution to extend the primary partition as: 42Gb Primary Partition (ntfs) 110Gb Extended Partition (ntfs) without repartitioning the entire disk? I used partition magic, gparted-live-0.4.6-4 and others with no success. With the Disk Management from Vista I manage to extend primary partition, but made my partitions dinamic.

  We had our samba server (ubuntu 8.04 ltr) share fill up the other day but when I went to look at it I cant see any of the shares have to much on them we have 5 group shares and then each users has an individual share one users has 22gigs of stuff a few others have 10-20mb of stuff and everyone else is empty so maybe like 26gigs total I deleted a few files yesterday and freed up about 250mb of space today when i checked it it was completely full again and i deleted some older files and freed up about 170mb of stuff but i can watch it slowly creep down in free space. I keep running a df -h Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 241690180 229340500 169200 100% / varrun 257632 260 257372 1% /var/run varlock 257632 0 257632 0% /var/lock udev 257632 72 257560 1% /dev devshm 257632 52 257580 1% /dev/shm lrm 257632 40000 217632 16% /lib/modules/2.6.24-28-generic /volatile what can I do to try to hunt down whats taking up so much of my hdd? (im fairly new to unix in general so i apologize if this is not well explained)

• Create bootable partition from image

  I have a Macbook Pro with a dead CD drive. I don't have easy access to a replacement drive. I'm trying to install Ubuntu, and I can't get the MBP to recognize a USB stick as a bootable media (I believe MBP's have issues with booting from USB in some cases). Is it possible to take a disk image and write it to a partition on the HDD so that I can then boot from that partition and then install the OS onto a third partition? • background copy large files to a laptop?

  Hey All, I like to watch windows media center recorded TV files on my laptop in bed. I find thought that when the programs are in HD I have a lot of stuttering and delays--no doubt b/c of the amount of data being transferred. I actually have a fair amount of space on the laptop's hdd, and wouldn't mind moving the files onto that hard drive, where no doubt my problem would go away. But that requires some planning & time for the files to move. Is there a utility out there that would kind of 'trickle' the files over to the laptop over a long period of time, w/out soaking its bandwidth? Something like ms' BITS tech? • How to install network drivers during installation?

  I have a server that I'm attempting to install windows onto. However, the disk is an iscsi target provided by ipxe. Everything appears to go well until about 3/4 through the install process I get an error about a critical driver missing and the installation is cancelled. I would say the critical driver would be the network card. It's an intel nic and the drivers are not on the windows installation CD. I tried slipstreaming them with RTSevenLite, but after it created the CD it seems it failed to make it bootable. I've also not been successful in making a bootable USB thumb drive or USB HDD. I suspect a buggy bios even though I have the latest. How to install network drivers during installation? Windows used to provide an optional F6 during install feature but this seems to be missing in Windows Servert 2008. Perhaps there is a way to do this, or another method?

• Graphics Startup Screen

  Specs: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 1987 MHz / 2x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM / 160GB IDE HDD / 128MB GeForce 6200 AGP / FIC AM37 / Windows XP Pro SP3 So, every time I start up my machine, there's a startup screen for the graphics card. It should display "NVIDIA GeForce 6200 VGA BIOS" with some other copyright information underneath it. However, it randomly changed to say "NV44A VGA BIOS." I think the GeForce 6200 codename is NV44A or something, but is there someway to change it back to say "GeForce 6200 VGA BIOS" or, if not, to completely stop it from showing upon startup? (Graphics drivers are all up to date.) Thanks in advance.

  I just put together a new system build in the hopes that all of my daily tasks would run smoothly and without any hiccups. Unfortunately I am still seeing some sound and sometimes video stuttering when playing HD movies in VLC (no problems with xvid/divx files). • bash process uses 90% CPU, comes back on computer restart

  I’ve replaced the old HDD of my late 2008 unibody MacBook (8 GB of RAM, running OS X 10.7.4) with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD. After doing this, I've installed Lion and restored my data from a Time Machine backup. Everything is fine, except for a process named “bash” that permanently uses about 90 % CPU. If I kill it via Activity Monitor, everything goes back to normal, but unfortunately the process comes back every time I restart the computer. I've tried do zap the PRAM, reinstall 10.7.4 from the combo package, and even simply wait for more than 2 hours, but the problem is still here.

I want to bye a new motherboard, for example, Gigabyte GA-EQ45M-S2 which also have on-board RAID controller, but Intel ICH10DO. What will happen with my data on RAID5? Will I have to re-create the array from the scratch and lost all my data? Is such array a soft RAID or soft-hard? What if my current motherboard will broken? What will happen with my data?

• development and music recording machine suggestions?

  I wasn't sure if this belongs on SuperUser so flag if so. I am looking to build, primarily, a windows development machine that is also good for recording using Cubase. I know I should use seperate machines but I'm on a budget this time of year. I also havn't kept up with hardware for quite a few years. Basically I know I want quad core, multiple monitor support (no gaming requirements). A lot of RAM, very quiet case and super fast HDD (SSD OR 10,000RPM)for compiling and latency. I will store libraries and other data on a USB drive. Sound card is not needed as I will be using an audio interface, all other music recording equipment is taken care of also. I could do with some decent monitor recomendations also. All suggestions welcome, thanks.

• Time Capsule Refuses to Connect After Interrupted File Transfer

  I have a first generation Apple Time Capsule set up as a NAS on my network. I use the built-in hard drive for Time Machine backups, with a 1.5 TB external HDD attached to the Time Capsule over USB. Whenever I cancel a file transfer from the external drive to my Macbook (or quit a video I had been streaming from it, as was the most recent incident), I can no longer connect to the Time Capsule or the attached drive, and I have to unplug it to get it working again. How can I fix this? Is it a network error? Could the Time Capsule be at fault or could it be my computer?

• Windows 7 - Move location of Eventlog

  I am having a particular nasty problem of my main system drive 'disappearing' all of the sudden while the system is running. The vendor somewhat knows about this but has not managed to fix it completely over multiple fw iterations. Problems I have with the support is that I cannot provide any particular system log files/entries to further analyse what might have been going on because, well - windows cannot write to its 'lost' drive before bsod'ing. Is there any way to configure where Windows 7 stores its event logs so that I could specify a second physical hdd?
