  • SQL SERVER – New Look for CodePlexProject – Hosting for Open Source Software

    Codeplex is my favorite site. CodePlex is Microsoft’s free open source project hosting site. You can create projects to share with the world, collaborate with others on their projects, and download open source software. It is great place to find so many open source project available to explore. All the softwares are free and open source. I often go there at intervals to check what is new in SQL Server field as well on other technologies. Yesterday when I visited it, I had nice surprise as it has total makeover and looks very decent as well elegant at the same time. I have noticed that when I talk about Codeplex is user community, not everybody knows about it. The quickest way I explain what is codeplex is that I start naming few of the projects which are available there and suddenly I start noticing a few hands going up knowing the projects. This is indirect way to prove that many of us know CodePlex usability but do not pay special attention to what it is actually. Let me name a few popular projects of the CodePlex here.   • Server 2012 DFS New Member Issue

    I am trying to add a new member to our DFS topology. We have 3 DCs (VMs - VMware) running Windows server 2012, two servers are located in or Primary site and the third at our DR site. Currently the two servers at our primary site are currently replicating DFS (full mesh) and are working fine. I have tried several times to add the third DC to our DFS topology, every time i configure the replication path e.g E:\MSI and click ok the MMC snap in crashes. Below is the crash info, any idea what is causing this? What i am doing is fairly straight forward and don't see why this would be happening.   • Poor home office network performance and cannot figure out where the issue is

    This is the most bizarre issue. I have worked with small to mid size networks for quite a long time and can say I'm comfortable connecting hardware. Where you will start to lose me is with managed switches and firewalls. To start, let me describe my network (sigh, shouldn't but I MUST solve this). 1) Comcast Cable Internet 2) Motorola SURFboard eXtreme Cable Modem. a) Model: SB6120 b) DOCSIS 3.0 and 2.0 support c) IPv4 and IPv6 support 3-A) Cisco Small Business RV220W Wireless N Firewall a) Latest firmware b) Model: RV220W-A-K9-NA c) WAN Port to Modem (2) d) vlan 1: work e) vlan 2: everything else. 3-B) D-Link DIR-615 Draft 802.11 N Wireless Router a) Latest firmware b) WAN Port to Modem (2) 4) Servers connected directly to firewall a) If firewall 3-A, then vlan 1 b) CAT5e patch cables c) Dell PowerEdge 1400SC w/ 10/100 integrated NIC (Domain Controller, DNS, former DHCP) d) Dell PowerEdge 400SC w/ 10/100/1000 integrated NIC (VMWare Server) 4) Linksys EZXS88W unmanaged Workgroup 10/100 Switch a) If firewall 3-A, then vlan 2 b) 25' CAT5e patch cable to firewall (3-A or 3-B) c) Connects xBox 360, Blu-Ray player, PC at TV 5) Office equipment connected directly to firewall a) If firewall 3-A, then vlan 1 b) ~80' CAT6 or CAT5e patch cable to firewall (3-A or 3-B) c) Connects 1) Dell Latitude laptop 10/100/1000 2) Dell Inspiron laptop 10/100 3) Dell Workstation 10/100/1000 (Pristine host, VMWare Workstation 7.x with many bridged VM's) 4) Brother Laser Printer 10/100 5) Epson All-In-One Workforce 310 10/100 5-A) NetGear FS116 unmanaged 10/100 switch a) I've had this switch for a long time and never had issues. 5-B) NetGear GS108 unmanaged 10/100/1000 switch a) Bought new for this issue and returned. 5-C) Linksys SE2500 unmanaged 10/100/1000 switch a) Bought new for this issue and returned. 5-D) TP-Link TL-SG10008D unmanaged 10/100/1000 a) Bought new for this issue and still have. 6) VLan 1 Wireless Connections (on same subnet if 3-B) a) Any of those at 5c b) HP Laptop 7) VLan 2 Wireless Connection (on same subnet if 3-B) a) IPad, IPod b) Compaq Laptop c) Epson Wireless Printer Shew, without hosting a diagram I hope that paints a good picture. The Issue The breakdown here is at item 5. No matter what I do I cannot have a switch at 5 and have to run everything wireless regardless of router. Issues related to using a switch (point 5 above) SpeedTest is good. Poor throughput to other devices if can communicate at all. Usually cannot ping other devices even on the same switch although, when able, ping times are good. Eventual lose of connectivity and can "sometimes" be restored by unplugging everything for several days, not minutes or hours but we're talking a week if at all. Directly connect to computer gives good internet connection however throughput to other devices connected to firewall is at best horrible. Yet printing doesn't seem to be an issue as long as they are connected via wireless. I have to force the RV220W to 1000Mb on the respective port if using a Gig Switch Issues related to using wireless in place of a switch (point 5 above) Poor throughput to other devices if can communicate. SpeedTest is good. Bottom line Internet speeds are awesome. By the way, Comcast went WAY above and beyond to make sure it was not them. They rewired EVERYTHING which did solve internet drops. Computer to computer connections are garbage Cannot get switch at 5 to work, yet other at 4 has never had an issue. Direct connection, bypass switch, is good for DHCP and internet. DNS must be on server, not firewall. Cisco insists its my switches but as you can see I have used four and two different cables with the same result. My gut feeling is something is happening with routing. But I'm not smart enough to know that answer. I run a lot of VM's at 5-c-3, could that cause it? What's different compared to my previous house is I have introduced Gigabit hardware (firewall/switches/computers). Some of my computers might have IPv6 turned on if I haven't turned it off already. I'm truly at a loss and hope anyone has some crazy idea how to solve this. Bottom line, I need a switch in my office behind the firewall. I've changed everything. The real crux is I will find a working solution and, again, after days it will stop working. So this means I cannot isolate if its a computer since I have to use them. Oh and a solution is not throwing more money at this. I'm well into $1k already. Yah, lame.

  • SQL Server Management Studio not scripting all objects

    i've been attempting to script a database using SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. i cannot get it to script some objects. It scripts others, but skips some. i can provide detailed screen shots the options being selected including all tables the folder where the script files will go the folder being empty before scripting the scripting process saying Sucess when scripting a table the destination folder no longer empty, with a hundred or so script files the script of some tables not being in the folder. And earlier SSMS would not script some views. Is this a known thing that the the Generate Scripts task does not generate scripts? Update Known issue on Microsoft Connect, but Microsoft couldn't repro the steps, so they closed closed the ticket. Fails on SQL Server 2005, also fails on SQL Server 2008. Update Two Some basic questions: 1.What version of SQL Server? Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.194 (Intel X86) Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3042.00 (Intel X86) Microsoft SQL Server 2008 - 10.0.2531.0 (Intel X86) Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio: 9.00.4035.00 Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Studio: 10.0.1600.22 2.What O/S are you running on? Windows Server 2000 Windows Server 2003 Windows Server 2008 3.How are you logging in to SQL server? sa/password Trusted authentication 4.Have you verified your account has full access to all objects? Yes, i have access to all objects. 5.Can you use the objects that fail to script? (eg: select top(10) * from nonScriptingTable) Yes, all objects work fine. SQL Server Enterprise Manager can script the objects fine. Update Three They fail no matter what version of SQL Server you script against.     Gimp launches every time I log into Xubuntu (v. 13.10). Gimp is not shown under Settings Manager- Sessions and startup. It does not appear in ~/.config/autostart. I immediately close Gimp in these cases, so it is not running when I shut down the session. How do I stop Gimp from autolaunching on startup?     i've been attempting to script a database using SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. i cannot get it to script some objects. It scripts others, but skips some. i can provide detailed screen shots the options being selected including all tables the folder where the script files will go the folder being empty before scripting the scripting process saying Sucess when scripting a table the destination folder no longer empty, with a hundred or so script files the script of some tables not being in the folder. And earlier SSMS would not script some views. Is this a known thing that the the Generate Scripts task does not generate scripts?     My environment: 2 PCs, a desktop and a laptop, both on Oneiric they are connected together by ethernet wire nfs-common is installed and configured: the desktop is the server a TV tuner card is installed on the desktop, I can watch TV with the software Me-TV It works fine, TV on desktop, and my network too: I share folders thanks to NFS. But I would like more: How can I share my TV tuner card from the desktop and be able to watch TV on the laptop too? If possible I would like a solution that allows me to keep using the software Me-TV, on both PCs. I bet that there is a solution to create a fake TV card on the 2nd PC with xNBD. I'm trying xnbd-server --target /dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0 but I cant make it work. Trying to understand some examples of xNBD command lines, it seems to be meant only for sharing disk player. If someone as ever used xNBD, he's welcome.

    I tried to connect over WiFi to SQL Server with SQL Server Management Studio from another computer, but it failed. I have a computer with Windows 7 & SQL Server 2008 (lets say the server computer). Next to it I have a freshly installed computer with Windows 7 & SQL Server Management Studio (let's say the client computer). What I did on the server computer: Configure firewall by enabling port 1433 Enabled network protocols (TCP/IP) inside SQL Server Configuration Manager Checked Allow remote connections to this server in server properties in the SQL Server Management application. Started SQL Server Browser Restarted services (SQL Server Browser is stopped at this point, but I don't think it is necessary. Is it?) Next, I successfully tested a ping on the port 1433 from my client computer with a tool named tcping (ex: tcping 192.168.1.4 1433). But I still cannot connect from my client computer to SQL Server on my server computer. Ok, something new with this problem: Until now, I successfully connected to my "server computer" with Management Studio. What I did is type the computer name in the server name field in the connection window of Management Studio. My previous (failed) attempt was to type the computer name followed by the instance of SQL server (ex: COMPUTER_NAME\SQL2008). I don't know why I only have to type the computer name. Now my new challenge is to be successful in connecting my VB6 application to this remote database located on my "server computer". I have a connection string for this but it failed to connect. Here is my connection string: "Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Password=mypassword;User ID=sa;Initial Catalog=TPB;Data Source=THIERRY-HP\SQL2008" Any idea what's going wrong?

    Does anyone here know if Active Directory will support the use of both Windows Folder Redirection and Mac OS X's Portable Home Directories for synchronizing a user's files to a remote share? I want to synchronize my user's files with a remote share as a way of backing up their data. This is fairly straightforward if a user has only a Windows computer or only a Mac computer. However, will Active Directory support a situation in which a user has both types of computers or they have a Mac on which they're running Windows within Parallels? If I configure a remote share via Group Policies for their Windows files and then configure a different share for their Mac files via ADUC, when they change a file on either computer, will AD know which computer the file was changed on and synchronize that file with the appropriate remote folder?     I want to have in my network small, cheap and energy efficient server with will be fully customizable (Gnu/Linux, OpenBSD). What is more I want to have big, redundant storage in my network and access to it via server. I have already small terminal without hard drive (no SATA/PATA, one drive on USB) which works fine. I don't want to buy big server, or to use regular computer for that. It's not cheap. I thought about a small case (ITX?), and cheap computer in this with SATA ports, but I cannot find anything interesting :( I thought about NAS in network and server independently and booting server from NAS, I'm not sure which technologies will be good for that, and I don't know what with performance. Direct connection to NAS through network from workstation is next pro for that. What do you think about DAS? It will be good for that?

    I'm using SQLServer Management Studio (2005) and I have a fairly lengthy list of servers in there, and I'd like to get rid of some of them that are no longer in use, without having to set them all up again. I know that the C:\Users\*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell\mru.dat can be deleted and this will remove ALL the entries, but is there anyway to just delete some of them? (Coding info) I looked at the file and it is a serialised blob from the Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionDlg.dll (Class Personalization) in the Appplication directory, but all the methods are private. So I can't just create an instance of this and then call Remove on the entries. (Also, the machine is using a PERC 6/i RAID card but I don't think that's important) I'm thinking about setting up a dedicated SAN (iSCSI) machine and then switching my Hyper-V server to ESXi. What are the advantages of using iSCSI versus SMB? I think I would still need a file server OS (eg. Win 2k8) sharing files via SMB so I'm not sure the end result would be any different than my current setup...

    I am migrating DHCP from a windows server 2003R2 DC to a Windows Server 2008R2 DC I've followed this video and its predecessor (Installing Windows Server Migration Tools) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/migrating-dhcp-using-the-windows-server-2008-r2-migration-tools.aspx I went through everything smoothly until the last step. I have exported a .mig file with my DHCP configuration on the old 2003r2 server. I transferred this .mig file over to my 2008R2 server, when running the import command, it will appear to work for a minute or two and then I get a generic windows "Powershell has stopped working" error and I have to close the program. Under the problem details I see the following: FileVersionOfSystemManagementAutomation: 6.1.7600.16385 InnermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException OutermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException DeepestPowerShellFrame: unknown OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.272.7 LocaleID: 1033 Seems like there are permissions issues maybe? I am running powershell as an admin and am logged in to the server as a domain administrator. Any Ideas? Thanks

  • Backing up my data causes my server to crash using Symantec Backup Exec 12, or How I Came to Loathe

    I have a Dell PowerEdge 2850 running Windows Server 2003. It is the primary file server for one of my clients. I have another server also running Windows Server 2003 that acts as the core media server for Symantec Backup Exec 12. I recently upgraded from Backup Exec 11d to 12. This upgrade was necessary because we also just upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. After the upgrade I had to push-install the new version 12 Backup Exec Remote Agents to each of the servers I am backing up (about 6 total). 5 of my servers are doing just fine, faithfully completing backups every night. My file server routinely crashes. Observations: When the server crashes, it does not blue screen, it just locks up completely. Even the mouse is unresponsive. If you leave the server locked up long enough, it will eventually reboot itself and hang on the Windows splash screen. There is absolutely zero useful Event Viewer evidence of a problem. The logs go from routine logging to an Unexplained Shutdown Event the next morning when I have to hard reset the server to get it to boot. 90% of the time the server does not boot cleanly, it hangs on the Windows splash screen. I don't have any light to shed here. When the server hangs all I can do is hard reset it and try again. Even after a successful boot and chkdsk /r operation, if you reboot the machine, you have a 90% chance it won't back up again cleanly. The back story: This server started crashing during nightly backups about a month ago. I tried everything I could think of to troubleshoot the problem and eventually had to give up because I could not keep coming to the office at 4 AM to try to get the server back online. One Friday I got lucky and the server stayed up for its entire full backup. I took this opportunity to restore the full backup to a temporary server I set up and switched all my users to the temporary. Then I reloaded the ailing file server. I kept all my users on the temporary file server for about 3 weeks. I installed the same Backup Exec Remote Agent and Trend Micro A/V client on the temporary server that I was using on the regular file server. During this time, I had absolutely no problems backing up the temporary server. I tested the reloaded file server extensively. I rebooted the server once an hour every day for 3 weeks trying to make it fail. It never did. I felt confident that the reload was the answer to my problems. I moved all of the data from the temporary server back to the regular server. I got 3 nightly backups out of it before it locked up again and started the familiar failure to boot cleanly behavior. This weekend I decided to monitor the file server through the entire backup job. I RDPd into the file server and also into the server running Backup Exec. On the file server I opened the Task Manager so I could view the processes and watch CPU and memory usage. Everything was running smoothly for about 60GB worth of backup. Then I noticed that the byte count of the backup job in Backup Exec had stopped progressing. I looked back over at my RDP session into the file server, and I was getting real time updates about CPU and memory usage still - both nearly 0%, which is unusual. Backups usually hover around 40% usage for the duration of the backup job. Let me reiterate this point: The screen was refreshing and I was getting real time Task Manager updates - until I clicked on the Start menu. The screen went black and the server locked up. In truth, I think the server had already locked up, the video card just hadn't figured it out yet. I went back into my bag of trick: driving to the office and hard reseting the server over and over again when it hangs up at the Windows splash screen. I did this for 2 hours without getting a successful boot. I started panicking because I did not have a decent backup to use to get everything back onto the working temporary file server. Once I exhausted everything I knew to do, I took a deep breath, booted to the Windows Server 2003 CD and performed a repair installation of Windows. The server came back up fine, with all of my data intact. I can now reboot the server at will and it will come back up cleanly. The problem is that I'm afraid as soon as I try to back that data up again I will back at square one. So let me sum things up: Here is what I've done so far to troubleshoot this server: Deleted and recreated the RAID 5 sets. Initialized the drives. Reloaded the server with a fresh Server 2003 install. Confirmed with Dell that I have installed the latest, Dell approved BIOS and NIC drivers. Uninstalled / reinstalled the Backup Exec Remote Agent. Uninstalled the Trend Micro A/V client. Configured the server not to reboot itself after a blue screen so I can see any stop error. I used to think the server was blue screening, but since I enabled this setting I now know that the server just completely locks up. Run chkdsk /r from the Windows Recovery Console. Several errors were found and corrected, but did not help my problem. Help confirm or deny the following assumptions: There are two problems at work here. Why the server is locking up in the first place, and why the server won't boot cleanly after a lockup. This is ultimately a software problem. The server works fine and can be rebooted cleanly all day long - until the first lockup - following a fresh OS load or even a Repair installation. This is not a problem with Backup Exec in general.   • ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/tmp/mysql.sock’ (2)

    Can someone please help as i've spent all day trying to fix this. I installed the latest XAMPP and now i can't connect to mysql from terminal.I checked my .profile file and the PATH seems ok. Does anyone know whats happened and what's the solution? PATH=$PATH:/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin export PATH THIS IS A PROGRAMMING QUESTION AS I'M A PHP DEVELOPER TRYING TO DO MY JOB!     Hi, im trying to install Windows 2008 R2 on VMWare, and I got this error: A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD or usb flash drive, please insert it now. I was trying to install it from ISO, daemon and from DVD drive, but always get this error.
