• Using Linq to SQL change events with attribute-based mapping

  I'm writing a new ASP.NET MVC2 application using Linq to SQL. This application depends on an existing SQL database. I am using attribute-based mapping to map my database fields to my Linq to SQL entities. I also need to make use of Linq to SQL's On[Property]Changed methods so I can perform change-auditing of database tables within my application. Whereas the documentation explains how to do this when using Linq to SQL's ORM and dbml files (i.e. by writing partial classes), it is not clear how to do with when using attribute-based mapping or when using XML-based mapping. It would be very helpful if someone could describe how to do this.

• Download files using Perl

  I have a project that depends upon some other binaries to be downloaded from web at install time.For this what i do is: if ( file-present-in-src/) # skip that file else # use wget to download the file The problem with this approach is that when I interrupt a download in middle, and do invoke the script next time, the partially downloaded file is also skipped (which is not desired), also I want wget to resume the download of the partially downloaded file. How should I go about it: Possible Solutions I could think of: Let the file to be downloaded to some file say download_tmp. Copy to original file if successful. Handle SIG{'INT'} to write proper cleanup code. But none of these could help resume the partial file download, Any insights?

• How often should a programmer communicate with management?

  I struggle with finding a good medium on communication. In our jobs, it seems like it's very easy to get lost in code and lose track of time. It also seems kind of ridiculous to send out updates for every tiny task. Even though I am working very hard on getting things done, in a company that has very active communication between other branches, it tends to look bad for me when I'm not constantly updating my status. However, if I'm working on a 3-4 hour project, I'm not going to update management for every single line of code that I output. Broad I know, depends on the people, company, etc, but what would be a good general rule of thumb for effective communication?

• Table changes depending on dropdown list values with servlet

  What I want to realize is the following: In a JSP x I have a 3 dropdownlists and a button called edit when user click this button a table dynamically should be displayed. Now this table is modified correponding the values in those 3 dropdownlists. So it can be 3 cols or 4 cols or even 6 cols, it depends on the selected values. So what I tried is to use the servlet to getParameter doing the if clause construct the html and then forward the response. Have you any the suggestion of the structure that I can use in JSP?   I used to use Spring.Net and want to switch to Ninject 1.5 (I have to use .NET2, since some unlucky guy like me still needs to consider users working with win 2k). I used to have everything done in xml and only invoke the container during startup. In this way, only very limited codes are depending on container. I have scenarios like this and I wonder how to do the same in Ninject. I have external config file, which are the items the end users can change basing on their environment/preferences. And some of my objects depends on those values to initialize. Mostly they are primary values, but some times can be list/dictionaries/etc.

• Event firing sequence for a submit button.

  Say a submit button has a click event handler as well (yes, it's wrong, but that's really the code I'm working on). And the click handler sets a value in a field of the form that's about to be submitted. So when the submit button is clicked: What will fire first, the form submit event or the click event? Will the value set in the form field by the click event submitted to the server? I think this depends on the answer to Q1. If the form is posted first, I'm guessing it won't. Note: I'm not looking for alternatives and advice. I know what the proper way of handling this will be. Just trying to understand the sequence of events and their implications.

• Check if NFS share is mounted in python script

  I wrote a python script that depends on a certain NFS share to be available. If the NFS share is not mounted it will happily copy the files to the local path where it should be mounted, but fail later when it tries to copy some files back that were created on the NFS server. I'd like to catch this error specifically so I can print a useful error message that will tell the users of this script what they have to do. My first idea would be to execute mount using subprocess and then check the output for this nfs share. But I'm wondering if there isn't a nicer and more robust method of doing it.

  We're trying to figure out the best way to write tests in our test plan. Specifically, when writing a test that is meant to be used by anyone including QA staff, should the steps in the test be very specific or more broad giving the tester more leeway in how the task can be accomplished. As a very simple example, if you're testing opening a document in word processing document, should the test read: Using the mouse, open the file menu Choose "Open File..." in the file menu In the open file dialog that appears, navigate to x and double-click the document called y OR Bring up the file open dialog Open the file y Now I realize one answer is probably going to be "it depends on what you're trying to test" but I'm trying to answer a broader question here: If the test steps are too specific do we risk a) making the testing process to laborious and tedious and more importantly b) do we risk missing something because we wrote down too specific a path to achieve a goal. Alternatively, if we make it broad do we depend too much on the whims of the tester at the time and lose crucial testing of paths that are more common to customers/clients?

  Hi How can I extract the longest of groups which start the same way For example, from a given string, I want to extract the longest match to either CS or CSI. I tried this "(CS|CSI).*" and it it will return CS rather than CSI even if CSI is available. If I do "(CSI|CS).*" then I do get CSI if it's a match, so I gues the solution is to always place the shorter of the overlaping groups after the longer one. Is there a clearer way to express this with re's? somehow it feels confusing that the result depends on the order you link the groups.

• Hashing a python function to regenerate output when the function is modified

  I have a python function that has a deterministic result. It takes a long time to run and generates a large output: def time_consuming_function(): # lots_of_computing_time to come up with the_result return the_result I modify time_consuming_function from time to time, but I would like to avoid having it run again while it's unchanged. [time_consuming_function only depends on functions that are immutable for the purposes considered here; i.e. it might have functions from Python libraries but not from other pieces of my code that I'd change.] The solution that suggests itself to me is to cache the output and also cache some "hash" of the function. If the hash changes, the function will have been modified, and we have to re-generate the output. Is this possible or ridiculous? Updated: based on the answers, it looks like what I want to do is to "memoize" time_consuming_function, except instead of (or in addition to) arguments passed into an invariant function, I want to account for a function that itself will change.

  I'm having problems with drawing rotated images on PDF, my output is worse. My case is, we don't know have any fixed co-ordinates. X,Y, rotation, etc. depends on ImageView itself. I select the ImageView and rotate it through Sliders. Check on ZOSH application. I need to implement functionalities like that app. I want to make PDF by adding images one by one.   I've got a abstract class class A { public: virtual void somefunction() = ; }; and some different classes that inherit this class: class Ab { public: void somefunction(); }; etc. I want to make a vector containing some objects of these classes (how many depends on input parameters) so I can access these easily later. However I'm a bit lost on how to do this. My best idea is vector<A> *objectsVector; Ab AbObject; objectsVector.push_back(AbObject); However this gives me a huge amout of errors from various .h files in /usr/include/c++ How should i solve this?

• Swing: Multiple CellEditors for a column

  Hi, In my JTable, I have two editable numeric columns. The editor for both columns extends AbstractCellEditor and uses a JFormattedTextField as an the editing component. The problem is that the format for input depends on the value of another column in the row. If condition X is met, the number of fraction digits should be Y, otherwise they should be Y+2. I attempted to override the getTableCellEditor(..) method to associate a TableCellEditor per row. See this example. However, since I have two editable columns, sharing a single TableCellEditor object per row gives some very odd results. I don't think this is an appropriate solution. Any ideas on how to approach this would be much appreciated! Thank you!

• Does allocation speed depend on the garbage collector being used?

  My app is allocating a ton of objects (1mln per second; most objects are byte arrays of size ~80-100 and strings of the same size) and I think it might be the source of its poor performance. The app's working set is only tens of megabytes. Profiling the app shows that GC time is negligibly small. However, I suspect that perhaps the allocation procedure depends on which GC is being used, and some settings might make allocation faster or perhaps make a positive influence on cache hit rate, etc. Is that so? Or is allocation performance independent on GC settings under the assumption that garbage collection itself takes little time?

• Can you recommend wiki, forum, blog & cms plugins for an existing Rails app or should I go the route

  Hello. I have an existing Rails internal app, that handles inventory, invoicing, order taking, labeling, data imports/exports, etc, etc. Now I need to add blog, cms, forum and wiki functionality to it. It seems silly to try to roll out my own solutions when there are already some out there. So I was wondering if people could recommend based on their experience: Are there good plugins out there? (Which ones you had experience with?) Would you rather recommend to go the route of engines, and integrate RadiantCMS or similar apps? (please provide recommendations based on your integration experience) Or would you just bite the bullet and roll out your own? Thank you. P.S.: Right now the app is Rails 2.3, but it will get upgraded to Rail 3 in a year, when most gems/plugins that it depends on will be Rails 3 compatible.

Could not find method org.apache.commons.codec.binary.Base64.encodeBase64URLSafeString, referenced from method This basically tells me that the commons-codec was not packaged which the Android project, so I added the commons-codec to the android project as well but the same error appears. how do I fix this?

• long waiting time in linking

  Hi, here is the situation. I am using visual studio 2005. the solution contains lots of projects, 34 projects in all, and the start up projects depends on others. then in linking part, it'll wait a long time before the real linking starts. I am pretty sure it's because of too many projects depended, as when I use a solution with 10 of the 34 projects(keep other projects as headers&libs), it'll start instantly. so any one has any idea that I can reduce the waiting time? thx.

Ideally I'd be able to make them visible only to the process that's running, but if I have to programmatically set them system-wide, I'll settle for that (but, would UAC force me to run as administrator to do that?) • Is 'bool' a basic datatype in C++ ?

  I got this doubt while writing some code. Is 'bool' a basic datatype defined in the C++ standard or is it some sort of extension provided by the compiler ? I got this doubt because Win32 has 'BOOL' which is nothing but a typedef of long. Also what happens if I do something like this: int i = true; Is it "always" guaranteed that variable i will have value 1 or is it again depends on the compiler I am using ? Further for some Win32 APIs which accept BOOL as the parameter what happens if I pass bool variable?

I have a web-site page that shows some data that comes from a database, and to generate the data from that database I have to do some fairly complex multiple joins queries. The data is being updated once a day (nightly). I would like to pre-generate the data for the said view to speed up the page access. For that I am creating a table that contains exact data I need. Question: for my situation, is it reasonable to do complete table wipe followed by insert? or should I do update,insert? • How to rename the original file before sending it to user

  Actually I have some download link on my website something like "http://www.example.com/somesong.mp3". Now when user click on this link they get somesong.mp3 but I want to change it before they download. I found many scripts that made it possible but didn't get exact right script. Because I want that when the user clicks on download link the file downloading should be started just after the click with the new file name as I want to use. But in all the scripts which I downloaded, first the php processing starts for a few minute (I think it depends on the file size) and then rename it. Is there a way to direct force the file in header with new file name. Thanks.
