  • Presentation to under privileged students about what programming is. How? Any ideas.

    Next week I have to give a presentation to a group of under privileged college students about the possibilities of a career in software development. These students have no exposure to programming what-so-ever. I have a good idea of how to tackle the non-technical, general portion of the presentation. However, notwithstanding my decade of experience, I am finding myself at somewhat of a loss how to convey the concept of programming in a meaningful way in under 20 minutes. Do I demonstrate actual simple code, or do I stick with concepts? I need to be able to scratch the surface of the vastness of the programming realm, to create just enough of a handle to those students, to peak the interest of those who might have the aptitude for it. Any ideas that are concise and clear would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anybody knows of online resources that addresses this topic, please share. Looking forward to some great input from this community. Thank you.

  • django modelformset - one form per related table row

    Hello, I have two models: class Model1(): name = CharField() url = CharField() class Model2(): model1 = ForeignKey(Model1) user = ForeignKey(User) zzz = CharField() There are 5 rows for model1 in the database, these are fixed and will rarely change. I need to display a formset for model2 that allows users to enter the zzz value, the formset must always show one form per row in the model1 table, the label for each form in the formset must be the name of the related model1. If the user deletes a model2 in the formset the next time the page loads it will render an empty zzz value for that form and the user must be able to edit the previous zzz value - meaning it must be pre populated with all model2 rows associated with the user. The idea is to print each row in the model1 table as a form instead of the user selecting the related model1 name in a select box. I know its not that complicated, but I'm seriously stumped and keep going round in circles!! Many thanks in advance. Gnu LP Kit(GLPK): I think this is the oldest and probably most stable and efficient 2. IP_Solve: Has good reviews about it. 3. JavaILP: Found this, but not much reviews about it 4.   • How to make it easy for users to install my software? Does the programming language matter?

    I'm a beginner to intermediate programmer and I've learned some java and C#. I want to start thinking about making some simple programs that I can release to the world. Just some basic stuff like calendar software that will probably be free. Users want the install process to be quick and easy. To install a java program, I have to tell them to have java installed. To install a C# program, I have to tell them to have .NET installed. I'm worried this might put off some potential users who just want to double click an exe file, choose a directory and be pretty much done. So, I guess this is an either/or two part question: 1) Is there a programming language that makes it easier to set up an installer without requiring users to have other stuff installed? or: 2) Is there some way to set up an installer that checks the system to see if it has java/.NET/whatever, and then includes java/.Net/whatever in the installation if it's not already there?

    I have often fought the urge to ask questions that I know aren't appropriate on SO, because I personally haven't come across another online group who's opinions I would trust as much. What sites do you frequent that you have found good participation from a smart group of people where you can ask questions that are related to software, but not programming problems? This community also has a vast depth of knowledge about things related to software like marketing, graphics/UI, running a small business, working in bad jobs, etc. that would greatly benefit everyone else. Where do we go to tap all that knowledge? On stackoverflow.uservoice.com there is a popular suggested feature to sanction, or add to SO, a place to hold discussions that aren't about specific programming questions. It seems that the suggestion has been denied in the past though.

    In my VB.net apps i make use of Linq2SQL and Reportviewer with RDLC reports. With Visual Studio 2010 they upgraded this reportviewer component so you can use the newer RDL specification from 2008. Now I've a problem to show related objects. For example assume you provide an order to the datasource of the report and then you can show something like Fields!Customer.Value.Name where Customer is a related entity. I also got the error in my immediate window: *Warning: The Value expression for the textrun ‘Name_1.Paragraphs[0].TextRuns[0]’ contains an error: The specified operation is not valid. (rsRuntimeErrorInExpression)*

  • How closely related is music composition to coding?

    It seems to me as if there are a higher proportion of musicians in the programming field than in the general public. Maybe it's just an illusion caused by the fact that I'm an amateur guitarist myself, so I tend to notice coding musicians (or musical coders?) more. But I wonder if there really is some connection. Perhaps a shared set of skills or an innate quality that makes it more likely for someone who enjoys programming to also enjoy playing and composing music. How closely related is music composition to coding? I'd especially like to hear from the musicians around here.

  • Get all related products based on their full-text search relationship

    I have a Product table with the fields Id, Title, Description, Keywords (just comma separated list of keywords). Table is full-text indexed. When I view one product, I do a query and search the full-text catalog for any related products based on the Keywords field. select * from Products where Contains(Products.*, @keywordsFromOneProduct) Works like a charm. Now I would like to list all products and all their related products in a big list and I want to avoid calling this method for each item. Any ideas how could I do it? I was thinking about a job that would go through products one by one and build a one-many mapping table (fields ProductId, RelatedProductId), but I wonder is there a better way?

Would a potential employer like to see something like that? What about someone hiring a freelancer? I'd especially appreciate: Responses from people who hire programmers or computer scientists for full-time jobs. Responses from people who hire freelance programmers. I have a simple one-to-many (models.ForeignKey) relationship between two of my model classes: class TeacherAssignment(models.Model): # ... some fields year = models.CharField(max_length=4) class LessonPlan(models.Model): teacher_assignment = models.ForeignKey(TeacherAssignment) # ... other fields I'd like to query my database to get the set of distinct years of TeacherAssignments related to at least one LessonPlan. I'm able to get this set using Django query API if I ignore the relation to LessonPlan: class TeacherAssignment(models.Model): # ... model's fields def get_years(self): year_values = self.objects.all().values_list('year').distinct().order_by('-year') return [yv[0] for yv in year_values if len(yv[0]) == 4] Unfortunately I don't know how to express the condition that the TeacherAssignment must be related to at least one LessonPlan.     I'm not sure if 'architecture' is the correct term, but I've been looking for some articles online which talk about programming design and more about how best to use languages such as JavaScript in a code design sense rather than the actual syntax itself. I have found many websites but a lot seem to be very out dated, and I'm not sure what developments have taken place with JavaScript over the years so do not know how old is too old. If anybody could suggest some great websites, or maybe specific articles you think would be useful, that would be highly appreciated. I am a beginner programmer currently using JavaScript with XML and of course HTML & CSS, and I'm currently trying to get further into and learn more about web development.

  • Are CMAttitude and CATransform3D related by rotational matrices?

    I'm looking at the core motion class CMAttitude, it can express the device's orientation as a 3x3 rotational matrix. At the same time I've taken a look at the CATransform3D, which encapsulates the view's attitude, as well as scaling. The CATransform3D is a 4x4 matrix. I've seen that the OpenGL rotational matrix is 4x4 and is simply 0001 padded in the 4th row and column. I'm wandering if the CMAttitude's rotational matrix is related to CATransform's matrix? Can I use the device's rotation in space obtained via a rotational matrix to transform a UIView using CATransform3D? My intention is to let the user move the phone and apply the same transform to a UIView on the screen. Bonus question: if they are related, how do I transform a CMAttitude's rotational matrix to CATransform3D?

Writing applications in this language and then translating it into PHP, like some languages target C as an intermediate language? The Scheme implementation Chicken compiles into C. XOTcl converts Java code into Tcl code LINJ was(?) a tool to convert Lisp into nice looking Java code … + a lot of ways to produce JavaScript without touching JavaScript.

    I'm trying to learn more about trust metrics (including related algorithms) and how user voting, ranking and rating systems can be wired to stiffle abuse. I've read abstract articles and papers describing trust metrics but haven't seen any actual implementations. My goal is to create a system that allows users to vote on other users and the content of other users and with those votes and related meta-data, determine if those votes can be applied to a users level or popularity.
