• Microsecond (or one ms) time resolution on an embedded device (Linux Kernel)

  Hey guys, I have a kernel module I've built that requires at least 1 ms time resolution. I currently use do_gettimeofday() but I'm concerned that this won't work once I move my module to an embedded device. The device has a 180 Mz processor (MIPS) and the default HZ value in the kernel is 100. Thus using jiffies will only give me at best 10 ms resolution. That won't cut it. What I'd like to know is if do_gettimeofday() is based on the timer interrupt (HZ). Can it be guaranteed to provide at least 1 ms of resolution? Thanks!

• Problem serving video to iPad from Mongrel 1.1.5 , RoR 2.0.2 on Mac OS 10.6.3 Server

  I am working off the Final Cut Server Integration sample provided by Apple that is a Rails app using 2.0.2 and runs on Mongrel 1.1.5. I can have a basic non-Ruby directory on my boot volume (Mac OS 10.6.3 Server) and can serve up video files just fine to iPad. However, when I drag the same video file into the 'public' area of the app running on -p 3000 it will not play on iPad, but will in Safari 4.0.5 desktop version. Images work fine so I know it's not a permissions issue. I'm getting the crossed-out play icon on iPad so it is not an issue of waiting on a large file to download before playing. I suspect it is a Mongrel/Snow Leopard issue but why would Safari on desktop work fine and not Safari iPad? • Java TCP keep-alive for a master server

  Context: Master server (Java, TCP) monitoring a list of hosted games (a different machine for the master server and for each hosted game server). Any user can host a game on his PC. Hosted games can last weeks or months. Need: Knowing when hosted game servers are closed or no longer reachable. Restriction 1: Can't rely on hosted servers' "gone offline update message", since those messages may never arrive (power down, Internet link cut, etc.) Restriction 2: I'm not sure about TCP's built-in keep-alive, since it would mean a 24/7 open socket with each hosted server (correct me if I'm wrong) Any thoughts?

  In general, is it better to have a web application make lots of calls to a web service getting smaller chunks of data back, or to have the web app make fewer calls and get larger chunks of data? In particular, I'm building a Silverlight app that needs to get large amounts of data back from the server in response to a query created by a user. Each query could return anywhere from a few hundred records to a few thousand. Each record has around thirty fields of mostly decimal-type data. I've run into the situation before where the payload size of the response exceeded the maximum allowed by the service. I'm wondering whether it's better (more efficient for the server/client/web service) to cut this payload vertically--getting all values for a single field with each call--or horizontally--getting batches of complete records with each call. Or does it matter?

  The MSDN site says: From your view class's function that handles the WM_CREATE message (typically OnCreate), call the new member variable's Register member function. Revoke will be called automatically for you when your view is destroyed. But I don't have an OnCreate function in the ChildView class. I do have OnCreate in the CMainFrame class. Can I register it there? What are the ramifications? PLEASE NOTE: I have it working for dropping files but I want to drop the text as a file, not at a cursor location like a text cut and paste, but rather I want the application to make a buffer to hold it, and I will treat it like a file. • iPad SDK, how to handle orientation with an UIImageView

  Hello I'm developing an app for iPad and I try to handle multiple orientation. My app contains a webview and a loading UIImageView that appears when my webview is loading content. This UIImageView has a background image that I set in InterfaceBuilder. When I change orientation to landscape, the image is cut. • Nasty deep nested loop in Rails

  I have this nested loop that goes 4 levels deep to find all the image widgets and calculate their sizes. This seems really inefficient and nasty! I have thought of putting the organization_id in the widget model so I could just call something like organization.widgets.(named_scope), but I feel like that's a bad short cut. Is there a better way? • HTML Table <thead> Position Fixed

  Variations of this question have been answered, but none of which dealing with my issue. I don't know if this can be achieved or not but I thought if anyone knew they would know on here. I have a table with a thead and one row with many columns. I want the thead to remain fixed (the row is extremely long) however when the thead is fixed, it gets cut off at the end of the browser. Is there a way I can keep it fixed but when you scroll horozontally for the entire page you can see the rest of the thead?

  I've got a report form designer written long ago for a database project. It used a lot of winapi magic hence i was forced to rewrite some parts 'in proper way'. Thanks to some articles from MSDN magazine (here and here) and CodeProject i was able to implement designer surface, toolbox and undo/redo engine. Every resource i discovered on the topic so far is a bit outdated. Can you point to fresh/comprehensive article? Code from article mentioned above seems not working. MenuCommandService.ShowContextMenu is called but nothing appears since there aren't any DesignerVerbs in globalVerbs collection. Should i add 'standard' ones, corresponded to designer actions such as cut/paste, manually? If yes, how can i accomplish this?

  In my free time, I develop (alone, sigh) a project, in particoular an application library. I've released it using GPL v3. At this time, this project has come very useful for a job. I'd like to release my OSS library toghether with the application using the same GPL v3 licence, with the exception that it can be linked for the specific application, or for the specific application vendor. AFAIK, the copyright owner can handle the entire source and licencing it, I did it; and probably the licence owner could cut&paste its own code, change its licence and use for other projects, isn't? But an GPL'ed library cannot be linked with a proprietary software, right? But software could be double-licenced, as MySQL does. So the question is: what should I do to allow the distribution of my GPL'ed library with a proprietary software, being the copyright owner?

• Using the Facebook Graph APIs PHP library

  I am using the PHP library for the Graph API (http://github.com/facebook/php-sdk) but am a bit confused about how it is all working (or not). I just want to authenticate the user and get the user ID back. What I really want to know is what to do once the user has logged in to Facebook and returned to my site. There is data called 'session' in the URL. Does this need to be stored in order to continually get the user ID? It is really not apparent, to me, from the samples or (lack of) documentation. Also, would it be easier to just cut out the PHP library altogether and just handle the reponse myself, storing it in a session variable. If i were to do this, what is the best method of getting/extracting the current users ID?

  I've recently rejoined the AutoHotkey band wagon, and I've been setting up a master script for myself. Generally, I have a few global hotkeys, for doing things like popping open the calculator, and frequently used solutions. I even have a hotkey to restart certain local windows services, I've also got several contextual hotkeys that are only available when certain programs are active, but I don't have anything so far for my common IDE's. I generally develop in VS2008/2010 these days and they have a pretty robust shortcut and code snippet system. Still, I can't help but wonder if anyone out there has come up with a useful set of hotkeys/hotstrings in AutoHotKey for their favorite development environments? I haven't seen much out there, but I'm always interested in ways to cut back my mundane tasks with automation. Does anyone have any AutoHotkey scripts they use primarily for development?

• Large Scale VHDL modularization techniques

  I'm thinking about implimenting a 16 bit CPU in VHDL. A simplish CPU. ADD, MULS, NEG, BitShift, JUMP, Relitive Jump, BREQ, Relitive BREQ, i don't know somethign along these lines Probably all only working with 16bit operands. I might even cut it down and use only a single operand and a accumulator. With Some status regitsters, Carry, Zero, Neg (unless i use a Accumlator), I know how to design all the parts from logic gates, and plan to build them up from first priciples, So for my ALU I'll need to 'build' a ADDer, proably a Carry Look ahead, group adder, this adder it self is make up oa a couple of parts, wich are themselves made up of a couple of parts. Anyway, my problem is not the CPU design, or the VHDL (i know the language, more or less). It's how i should keep things organised. How should I use packages, How should I name my processes and port maps? (i've never seen the benifit of naming the port maps, or processes)

• TAPI App on 64bits OS

  I have a TAPI Application (Delphi 2007) working on 32bits OSs (XP, Vista, Win7). The TAPI server is 32bits Windows 2003 SP2. While TAPI APP is running on 64bits OS, I can connect to the line but i cannot get TAPI messages on my App. I can see messages have arrived on machine through Tracing tapisrv but the WaitForSingleObjectEx to the event handle (returned by lineInitializeEx) is never signaled (always returns WAIT_TIMEOUT). I've also tried C++ code and 64bits compiler but the 64bits App had the same behavior (except not even starting on 32bits OS :-) ). Is there any ideas how i can receive the TAPI messages to my App??? EDIT: Well, it seems that only the messages regarding incoming calls are cut. If (while App is running) i execute "tcmsetup /c /d" (=disable TAPI) then i DO receive LINE_CLOSE and LINE_REMOVE messages. Then, if i execute "tcmsetup /c server_name", i DO get the LINE_CREATE message. I can lineOpen the new line provided but still CANNOT get LINE_APPNEWCALL, LINE_CALLSTATE etc

• Whats happening to my HTML?

  I am making changes to my website, and I just noticed that things look different. In IE, the content doesnt center, theres a margin on my content, and the font looks bigger in chrome.. I ran it through Yahoo's HTML validator and the error I get is line 1 - Error: character "" not allowed in prolog. I believe that there may be some sort of whitespace being sent before the DOC TYPE, but I cant seem to fix it. The HTML looks fine in my text editor (Notepad++) so I dont know what the problem is. Im using a strict DOC Type. Everything was fine before I made any changes, but I cant pinpoint what caused the change. If it helps, I'm using a Framework (Kohana). My initial thought was that something was being sent to the browser by an echo or something, but I couldnt find any echo statements. I dont know what could be causing this... • Get a image from a uiview

  Hi I want to perform a shrink animation on a UITableVIew. I experimented a bit and found out that the animation runs much faster when I shrink a UIImageView with an image of the current state of the tableview instead of shrinking the table view itself. I grabbed the image in a method in my main viewcontroller prior to the animation: UIGraphicsBeginImageContext(mainTableView.bounds.size); [resizeContainer.layer renderInContext:UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext()]; UIImage *viewImage = UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext(); UIGraphicsEndImageContext(); Works like a charm, at least almost. On very rare occasions I get weird graphic glitches, where the UIImage starts to overlap a toolbar that lies underneath it. I just want to make sure that I am getting the image in the right way. • TeamCity for continuous integration with Visual Studio 2010 solutions/projects

  I am running TeamCity build 5.1.1 on a virtual machine that also hosts our SVN environment. A team I support has recently made the move from Visual Studio 2008/Silverlight 3.0 to Visual Studio 2010/Silverlight 4.0 and when investigating how to do continuous integration with Visual Studio 2010 solutions/projects, it is not as cut and dried as it appeared to be in Visual Studio 2008. Previously I was using Web Deployment Projects and targeting different Release Configurations in TeamCity, which would use the Web Deployment Project to package/deploy the code to our various environments. However when checking out the new Publish ability in Visual Studio 2010 I cannot find a way to specify which location to deploy to. Does everything need to be done in MSBuild now (in the solution file or maybe the Web project file?). If anyone has any examples of how they've done Continuous Integration using TeamCity and Visual Studio 2010, it would be greatly appreciated as I am coming up blank at the moment.

  I know there is simple, which seems to be a decent enough XML serializer and i know there is Jaxb which seems to do the job as well. However im after something a bit more generic, so I could serialize my model to Xml, Json, Binary etc. So the models are just dumb objects that just get thrown into some sort of serialization factory and then the relevant output is spat out... I dont see any reason why you couldn't do this with reflection, so for a REALLY simple solution get the relevent public properties, cut off the get or set and make that the element name... i.e getPersonName() would become <PersonName>xxxx</PersonName> or PersonName:XXXXX
