• Is it possible to use inheritance in this situation? (Java)

  I have ClassA and ClassB, with ClassA being the superclass. ClassA uses NodeA, ClassB uses NodeB. First problem: method parameters. ClassB needs NodeB types, but I can't cast from the subclass to the superclass. That means I can't set properties which are unique to NodeB's. Second problem: When I need to add nodes toClassB, I have to instantiate a new NodeB. But, I can't do this in the superclass, so I'd have to rewrite the insertion to use NodeB. Is there a way around it or am I gonna have to rewrite the whole thing?

  I have made a string vector vector actor_; and then added elements in it using push_back. I now want to display all of them, for which I need to run a loop according to the number of elements in the vector. For that, I need to run the following loop: for (int i = 0; i < (int)actor_.size; i++) { } but this returns the following error: error C2440: 'type cast' : cannot convert from 'unsigned int (__thiscall std::vector<_Ty::* )(void) const' to 'int' 1 with 1 [ 1 _Ty=std::string 1 ] 1 There is no context in which this conversion is possible

• Print unique ascii characters in eclipse console

  Hey guys, Kind of a strange question but... here it goes. Recently my application threw an IOException that the text only had a clubs symbol in it (like the suit in cards) I know this is probably because there was a number in there that was cast to a char and printed to the screen, and I've found where that might have happened. The only problem is, I can't recreate it in eclipse because the eclipse console doesn't want to print those characters for me. All I get are boxes. I figure this is an encoding issue or something but I need eclipse to print out those characters just like the windows console would. Is there a setting I can change to do this?

Either**static_cast** and reinterpret_cast works. • Unusual conversion error (string to integer) asp.net

  I have my repeater item template: <ItemTemplate> <tr><td><%#Container.DataItem("Category")%></td></tr> </ItemTemplate> Hooked up to: s = "SQL that works ok on server" x = New SqlCommand(s, c) x.Parameters.Add("@contentid", SqlDbType.Int) x.Parameters("@contentid").Value = contentid c.Open() r = x.ExecuteReader If r.HasRows Then Linksrepeater.DataSource = r Linksrepeater.DataBind() End If c.Close() r.Close() When I run the code I get: Invalid Cast Exception was not handled by user code (Conversion from string "category" to type 'Integer' is not valid.) I'm not sure how / why it is trying to convert "Category" to integer as in the db it is a string. Can you please tell me how to avoid this error? thanks.

• Drupal Views: Render Null Result for Relationship as 0

  I have a View configured in Drupal to return nodes, sorting them by their average vote in descending order. For the purpose of the View, the value of the average votes is a Relationship. I noticed that nodes with no votes are displayed after nodes with a negative average. Nodes with no votes should have an average of 0, but I believe the MySQL JOIN is causing NULL values to be returned (as there are no matching rows in the joined table, since a row is created after the first vote is cast for that item). I discovered that with MySQL it is possible to output all values that are NULL in a column as another value with IFNULL(column_name,'other value'). I feel like I would need to modify the Views module in order to obtain this functionality, but I'm hoping that there is some sort of option that returns NULL values in a relation (a relation doesn't exist for the item) as 0 instead of NULL, so that I can properly sort the nodes. The modules I am using include Views, Voting API, Vote Up/Down, and CTools. Thanks.

• How do I get a Type[] with arguments from a MethodCallExpression?

  I'm reflecting over a class (in a unit test of said class) to make sure its members have all the required attributes. To do so, I've constructed a couple of helpers, that take an Expression as an argument. I do some checks for it, and take slightly different actions depending on what type of Expression it is, but it's basically the same. Now, my problem is that I have several methods with the same name (but different signatures), and the following code throws an AmbiguousMatchException: // TOnType is a type argument for the type where the method is declared // mce is the MethodCallExpression var m = typeof(TOnType).GetMethod(mce.Method.Name); Now, if I could add an array of Type[] with the types of the arguments to this method as a second parameter to .GetMethod(), the problem would be solved. But how do I find this Type[] array that I need? I have cast the Expression<Func<...>> to an Expression, and then to a MethodCallExpression, and in this method the contents of <...> is not known.

• Is it possible to use the values method for a HashMap if the values are ArrayLists?

  I'm stuck trying to get something to work in an assignment. I have a HashMap<Integer, ArrayList<Object>> called sharedLocks and I want to check whether a certain value can be found in any ArrayList in the HashMap. The following code obviously wouldn't work because Object[] can't be cast to ArrayList[], but it is a demonstration of the general functionality that I want. ArrayList[] values = (ArrayList[]) sharedLocks.values().toArray(); boolean valueExists = false; for (int i = 0; i < values.length; i++) { if (values[i].contains(accessedObject)) { valueExists = true; } } Is there a way for me to check every ArrayList in the HashMap for a certain value? I'm not sure how to use the values method for HashMaps in this case. Any help would be much appreciated.

  I have a C function receiving a uint8 pointer with another parameter which is its size (number of bytes). I want to extract double data from this buffer. Table 1 has 1 column called: OldDate which is nvarchar(255), null Table 2 has 1 column called: NewDate which is datetime, not null Example data in Table 1: 26/07/03 NULL NULL 23/07/2003 7/26/2003 NULL 28/07/03 When i try CAST(OldDate as datetime) I get this error: Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime. I need to insert OldDate into NewDate with no errors. I can't skip some rows. Anyhelp would be appreciated.

  I've run into something odd in a .NET CF 2.0 project for Pocket PC 2003 (Visual Studio 2005). I was dealing with a System.IO.Stream object and found that the IDE wouldn't auto-complete the Dispose() method. I typed it in manually and received: 'System.IO.Stream.Dispose(bool)' is inaccessible due to its protection level The error is referring to the protected Dispose(bool) method. Dispose() is either private or not present. Question 1: How is this possible? Stream implements IDisposable: public abstract class Stream : MarshalByRefObject, IDisposable ... and IDisposable requires a Dispose() method: public interface IDisposable { void Dispose(); } I know the compiler won't let me get away with that in my code. Question 2: Will I cause problems by working around and disposing my streams directly? IDisposable idisp = someStream; idisp.Dispose(); The implicit cast is accepted by the compiler.

  This is ok: Class<? extends String> stringClass = "a".getClass(); But this gets error: <T> void f(T obj) { Class<? extends T> objClass = obj.getClass(); } I know I can cast it like: <T> void f(T obj) { @SuppressWarnings("unchecked") Class<? extends T> objClass = (Class<? extends T>) obj.getClass(); } But why the previous error? Will the next release of Java 7 will support such usage?

  I have set up a Core Data model that includes an entity, Item with a 1-M relationship with the abstract entity Place, so that an item has many places. There are several entities with the parent set to Place. I want to set up several UI elements depending on the descendent place types. I have a loop that looks something like this: for (Place *place in item.places) { } ... but I'm not sure how to detect what type the place is, and how to cast it to the proper type so that I can access its properties.   For example. Lets say we have a stackpanel on a form. Its full of both Grids and Labels. I want to loop through all the Grids and do some operation on them but leave the Lables intact. At the moment I am doing it this way. foreach(UIElement element in m_stacker.Children) { Grid block = element as Grid; if(block != null) { //apply changes here } } So i'm using the fact that "as" returns null if it cannot cast into the required type. Is this an ok thing to do or is there a better solution to this problem?

  I'm having a really hard time trying to figure out how can I store or pass a type in scala. What I want to achive is something like this: abstract class Foo( val theType : type ) object Foo{ case object Foo1 extends Foo(String) case object Foo2 extends Foo(Long) } So at some point I can do this: theFoo match{ case String => "Is a string" case Long => "Is a long" } and when obtaining the object being able to cast it: theFoo.asInstanceOf[Foo1.theType] Is this possible? If is possible, is a good aproach? What I'm trying to achieve ultimately is writing a pseudo schema for byte stream treatment. E.g if I have an schema Array(Foo1,Foo1,Foo2,Foo3,Foo1) I could parse Arrays of bytes that complain with that schema, if at some point I have a different stream of bytes I could just write a new schema Array(Foo3, Foo4, Foo5) without having to reimplement parsing logic.   I have a factorymethod that either returns an object of baseclass or one that is of derivedclass (a derived class of baseclass). The derived class has a method virtual void foo(int x) that takes one argument. baseclass however has virtual void foo() without an argument. In my code, a factory method returns a pointer of type bar that definetly points to an object of class derivedclass. However since this is only known at runtime I get a compiler error saying that foo() does not take an argument.   In this answer, sassman initializes a pointer with: zend_class_entry* ce = 0L; My question is – is this valid? I would say it isn't, to initialize the variable with a null pointer either an unadorned (and possibly casted to void *) 0 constant, or some macro that evaluates to that such as NULL should be used. However, I can't find definitive language in the standard that supports this interpretation. All it says is: An integer constant expression with the value 0, or such an expression cast to type void *, is called a null pointer constant.

  Is this possible? Surely if you passed in a double, any sort of function implementation code which casts an object to an Integer would not be able to work unless the cast 'Integer' was specifically used? I have a function like: public static void increment(Object o){ Integer one = (Integer)o; system.out.println(one++); } I cant see how this could be made generic for a double? I tried public static <E> void increment(E obj){ E one = (E)o; system.out.println(one++); } but it didn't like it?

  I'm working on an application that manipulates SQL tables in a windows form application. Up until now, I've only been using the pre-generated Fill queries, and self-made update and delete queries (which return nothing). I am interested in storing the value of a single value from a single column (an 'nchar(15)' name), and though I have easily written the SQL code to return that value to the application, I have no idea what it will be returned as. SELECT [Contact First Name] FROM ContactSkillSet WHERE [Contact ID] = @CurrentID Can the result be stored directly as a string? Do I need to cast it? Invoke a toString method?

  We're using SQL Inserts to insert some data via a script into DB/2 tables, e.g. CREATE TABLE TICKETS (TICKETID VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL); On my home installation, this statement works fine (note that I'm using an integer which is autoatically cast into a VarChar): INSERT INTO TICKETS (TICKETID) VALUES (1); while at my customer's site I get a type error. My question(s): Is this behavior version dependent? (I use a DB2 Express V9.7, while the customer has an Enterprise V9.5) Is there a config option to change the behavior? (I would like my home install to behave as close as possible as the production environment is going to be.)

  I have D1 and D2 which derive from B. When i write var ls = (IEnumerable<B>)(cond?lsD1:lsD2); I get a runtime cast error. IIRC this is a well known problem. My question is 1) Is this allowed yet? perhaps in .NET 4? I have 2010 but my project is a few months old, large and targets 3.5. 2) Is there a simple workaround? I only need to read the list not add anything or remove. Actually, ToArray() would probably work but is there another solution?

  Hi, If I define these variables: double x0, xn, h; int n; and I have this mathematical expression: h = (xn - x0)/n; Is it necessary that I cast n into double prior doing the division for maximum accuracy like in h = (xn - x0)/ (double) n; I wrote a program to check the above but both expressions give the same answers. I understand that C will promote the integer to double type as variables xn and x0 are of type double but strangely enough in a book, the second expression with casting was emphasized.
