  • Rails 3: What is the proper way to respond to REST-ful actions with JSON in rails?

    - by Damien Wilson
    Hello SO. I'm trying to make an API for my rails application using JSON responses to RESTful resource controllers. This is a new experience for me, so I'm looking for some guidance and pointers. To start things off: In a rails application, what is the "proper" way to respond with JSON to REST-ful controller methods? (create, update, destroy) Is there an idiomatic way to indicate success/failure through a JSON response? Additional information: I'm currently working with rails 3.0.beta2 I would like to avoid using a plugin or gem to do the grunt work, my goal is to gain a better understanding of how to make a rails 3 API. Links to places I could find more information on the topic would also be appreciated, some quick searching on google didn't do me much good.

  • How to create migration in subdirectory with Rails?

    - by Adrian Serafin
    Hi! I'm writing SaaS model application. My application database consist of two logic parts: application tables - such as user, roles... user defined tables (he can generate them from ui level) that can be different for each application instance All tables are created by rails migrations mechanism. I would like to put user defined tables in another directory: db/migrations - application tables db/migrations/custom - tables generated by user so i can do svn:ignore on db/migrations/custom, and when I do updates of my app on clients servers it would only update application tables migrations. Is there any way to achieve this in rails?

  • Is it possible to use RubyGnome2's/QtRuby's HTML renderers to make UI for a Ruby script?

    - by mjr
    I'd like to make a graphical user interface for my script, instead of running it from the console. I'm aware there's a wealth of UI libraries for Ruby, but I'm quite familiar with HTML and CSS and I'd like to use them for building an interface. So the question is: Is it possible to use a HTML rendering library to make such an UI? From what I understand, it's relatively easy to put in a HTML rendered view of something, but is it possible to communicate back with the script? Like when I push that big red button, it actually tells the script to act on it? Obviously it's possible if the script run on the server side, but I'd like to run it as a desktop application.

  • Shorter Rails routes

    - by Puru puru rin..
    Hello, I have a thing blog application, and I would like to shorten my routes. Here there are: Blog::Application.routes.draw do resources :categories do resources :articles do resources :comments end end A rake routes command build the following lines: GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"index"} category_article_comments POST /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"create"} new_category_article_comment GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/new(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"new"} GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"show"} PUT /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"update"} category_article_comment DELETE /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"destroy"} edit_category_article_comment GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/:id/edit(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"edit"} GET /categories/:category_id/articles(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"index"} category_articles POST /categories/:category_id/articles(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"create"} new_category_article GET /categories/:category_id/articles/new(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"new"} GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"show"} PUT /categories/:category_id/articles/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"update"} category_article DELETE /categories/:category_id/articles/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"destroy"} edit_category_article GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:id/edit(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"edit"} GET /categories(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"index"} categories POST /categories(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"create"} new_category GET /categories/new(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"new"} GET /categories/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"show"} PUT /categories/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"update"} category DELETE /categories/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"destroy"} edit_category GET /categories/:id/edit(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"edit"} As can be seen, each resource is ordered in a tree. So I believe that, it's could be interesting to simplify my routes such as for example: /categories/ => / /categories/:id => /:id /categories/:category_id/articles/ => /:category_id/articles /categories/:category_id/articles/:id => /:category_id/:id /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/ => /:category_id/:article_id/comments /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/:id => /:category_id/:article_id/:id It's more DRY, is't it? :) Does Rails 3 provides a easy way to do so, with an HTTP verbs mapping to controller actions automatically? Thanks anyone.

  • Facebook Graph API with Rails and Authlogic - preferred methodology?

    - by decabear
    There are lots of Facebook + Rails solutions, most notably Facebooker, but this and many others are not compatible with Rails 3. I'm currently using Authlogic for authentication with my app, and I want to give users the option of Facebook to sign in. I want to find the best way to have FB and Authlogic go together; right now I'm just writing my own Authlogic add-on for Facebook but if this has already been done then I don't want to redo someone else's work. Does anyone know of anything like this?

  • How do I display two different objects in a search?

    - by JZ
    github url I am using a simple search that displays search results: @adds = Add.search(params[:search]) In addition to the search results I'm trying to utilize a method, nearbys(), which displays objects that are close in proximity to the search result. The following method displays objects which are close to 2, but it does not display object 2. How do I display object 2 in conjunction with the nearby objects? @adds = Add.find(2).nearbys(10) While the above code functions, when I use search, @adds = Add.search(params[:search]).nearbys(10) a no method error is returned, undefined methodnearbys' for Array:0x30c3278` How can I search the model for an object AND use the nearbys() method AND display all results returned? • Labeled fixtures for associations in Rails 3 broken

    - by elsurudo
    After upgrading to Rails 3, fixtures that refer to other labelled fixtures (for relationships) stop working. Instead of finding the actual fixture with that name, the fixture label is interpreted as a string. Example: # Dog.yml sparky: name: Sparky owner: john # Person.yml john: name: John Where Dog "belongs to" person. The error message is: SQLite3::SQLException: table dogs has no column named 'owner'

  • Send Redirects To Specific Ports

All my redirects from that server are being redirected back through port 9000, when they should be sent back on port 80. I am using a combination of haproxy + nginx + passenger. Is there a way to make sure all redirects are being sent through port 80, regardless of what port the actual server is listening on? I don't care if its a haproxy, nginx, Passenger, or Rails change. I just need to make sure most requests unless specified otherwise, are sent back to port 80. Thanks!

  • Is unobtrusive RJS files in Rails 3 considered a good idea?

    - by midas06
    I'm working on implementing javascript functionality in my rails 3 app. Now that rjs is supposedly unobtrusive (I honestly don't know a lot about rjs), is it still "evil"? It seems to me the downside may be a lack of testability, but partial page updates via rjs seem to be easier than jumping through the rails hurdles to make ajax requests via jquery. Thoughts? Examples?

  • Using Rails 3 and Haml 3, how do I configure Haml?

    - by dpogg1
    I'm using Rails 3.0.0.beta3 and Haml 3.0.0.rc.2, and I can't find where I need to place the configuration lines for Haml (nor what they are in the new version, for that matter). Using Rails 2.3.5 and Haml 2, I would do Haml::Template.options[:format] = :html5 in environment.rb. Or, in Sinatra, set :haml, {:format => :html5} in my main file. But in Rails 3 everything's been changed around, and no matter where I put that configuration line, I get an undefined method or undefined object error.

Here is the error message I received: "/Users/dpetrovi/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/sqlite3-ruby-1.3.2/lib/sqlite3/sqlite3_native.bundle: [BUG] Segmentation fault ruby 1.8.7 (2010-12-23 patchlevel 330) [i686-darwin10] Abort trap" I checked bundle install in the demo folder: "Using rake (0.8.7) Using abstract (1.0.0) Using activesupport (3.0.3) Using builder (2.1.2) Using i18n (0.5.0) Using activemodel (3.0.3) Using erubis (2.6.6) Using rack (1.2.1) Using rack-mount (0.6.13) Using rack-test (0.5.6) Using tzinfo (0.3.23) Using actionpack (3.0.3) Using mime-types (1.16) Using polyglot (0.3.1) Using treetop (1.4.9) Using mail (2.2.13) Using actionmailer (3.0.3) Using arel (2.0.6) Using activerecord (3.0.3) Using activeresource (3.0.3) Using bundler (1.0.7) Using thor (0.14.6) Using railties (3.0.3) Using rails (3.0.3) Using sqlite3-ruby (1.3.2) Your bundle is complete! Use bundle show [gemname] to see where a bundled gem is installed." Ruby, RubyGems, and sqlite3 were installed using MacPorts. Then I used gem to try to install the sqlite3-ruby interface. (sudo gem install sqlite3-ruby). Here is where I first noticed something could be off: "Successfully installed sqlite3-ruby-1.3.2 1 gem installed Installing ri documentation for sqlite3-ruby-1.3.2... No definition for libversion Enclosing class/module 'mSqlite3' for class Statement not known Installing RDoc documentation for sqlite3-ruby-1.3.2... No definition for libversion Enclosing class/module 'mSqlite3' for class Statement not known " I had rails running well on my system a few months ago, so I figured maybe I had some duplicates and it was trying to use the wrong one. I ran: "for cmd in ruby irb gem rake; do which $cmd; done" and got: "/opt/local/bin/ruby /opt/local/bin/irb /opt/local/bin/gem /opt/local/bin/rake" Checking where sqlite3 also gets me: "/opt/local/bin/sqlite3" so they all seem to be in the right place. Obviously /opt/local/bin is in my system path. If I check gems server, it shows that I have installed sqlite3-ruby 1.3.2 gem. Not sure what the problem could be? I am using ruby 1.8.7 (2010-12-23 patchlevel 330) [i686-darwin10]. Macports claims this is the latest (although ive seen 1.9.1) One more thing-- in irb, I tried to check which version of sqlite3 my sqlite3-ruby is bound to, but I can only get this far: ":irb(main):001:0 require 'rubygems' = true irb(main):002:0 require 'sqlite3' /Users/dpetrovi/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/sqlite3-ruby-1.3.2/lib/sqlite3/sqlite3_native.bundle: [BUG] Segmentation fault ruby 1.8.7 (2010-12-23 patchlevel 330) [i686-darwin10] Abort trap" Any suggestions? Im hoping I overlooked something obvious. Thanks

  • Finds in Rails 3 and ActiveRelation

    - by TheDelChop
    Guys, I'm trying to understand the new arel engine in Rails 3 and I've got a question. I've got two models, User and Task class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :tasks end class Task < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user end here is my routes to imply the relation: resources :users do resources :tasks end and here is my Tasks controller: class TasksController < ApplicationController before_filter :load_user def new @task = @user.tasks.new end private def load_user @user = User.where(:id => params[:user_id]) end end Problem is, I get the following error when I try to invoke the new action: NoMethodError: undefined method `tasks' for #<ActiveRecord::Relation:0x3dc2488> I am sure my problem is with the new arel engine, does anybody understand what I'm doing wrong? Sorry guys, here is my schema.db file: ActiveRecord::Schema.define(:version => 20100525021007) do create_table "tasks", :force => true do |t| t.string "name" t.integer "estimated_time" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" t.integer "user_id" end create_table "users", :force => true do |t| t.string "email", :default => "", :null => false t.string "encrypted_password", :limit => 128, :default => "", :null => false t.string "password_salt", :default => "", :null => false t.string "reset_password_token" t.string "remember_token" t.datetime "remember_created_at" t.integer "sign_in_count", :default => 0 t.datetime "current_sign_in_at" t.datetime "last_sign_in_at" t.string "current_sign_in_ip" t.string "last_sign_in_ip" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" t.string "username" end add_index "users", ["email"], :name => "index_users_on_email", :unique => true add_index "users", ["reset_password_token"], :name => "index_users_on_reset_password_token", :unique => true add_index "users", ["username"], :name => "index_users_on_username", :unique => true end Thank you, Joe

  • Dynamic "OR" conditions in Rails 3

    - by Ryan Foster
    I am working on a carpool application where people can search for lifts. They should be able to select the city from which they would liked to be picked up and choose a radius which will then add the cities in range to the query. However the way it is so far is that i can only chain a bunch of "AND" conditions together where it would be right to say "WHERE start_city = city_from OR start_city = a_city_in_range OR start_city = another_city_in_range" Does anyone know how to achive this? Thanks very much in advance. class Search < ActiveRecord::Base def find_lifts scope = Lift.where('city_from_id = ?', self.city_from) #returns id of cities which are in range of given radius @cities_in_range_from = City.location_ids_in_range(self.city_from, self.radius_from) #adds where condition based on cities in range for city in @cities_in_range_from scope = scope.where('city_from_id = ?', city) #something like scope.or('city_from_id = ?', city) would be nice.. end end
