• Shouldn't all source code be plain text? [on hold]

  Some developing environment/languages save the source code you write in a binary/propietary format that you cannot see or edit with a generic text editor. I'm not talking about compiled code, but the source code. An example could be PowerBuilder and Oracle Forms. It's ok you use proprietary technology if you want, but not being able to open the source code you wrote, in a simple editor, if only to read it, seems like a very strict form of vendor lock-in. Also this prevents you from using text-based version controls that can show you the difference between two versions in a line-by-line base. If the code is plain text, you don't need a license in order to just open it, see it and learn from it. Should it be a golden rule to avoid vendor lock-in to avoid technologies that save your source code to anything but plain text files ?

  URL is an URI which identifies a resource by location. Resource representation is a view of resource's state. This view is encoded in one or more transferable formats, such as XHTML, Atom, XML, MP3 ... URIs associate resource representations with their resources a) So I assume URI identifies a resource and not resource representation? b) I've read that relationship between an URI and resource representation is one to many. Assuming we're talking about URL, how can a single URL address more than one resource representation? thank you

• What are good HTML 5 and PHP 5 books to get? [closed]

  I am looking for beginner books into PHP 5 (Maybe with a bit into MySQL?) and HTML 5. I started self-teaching myself PHP although it has become a problem as the tutorials online are either outdated or just crap. I also managed to start learning with very little HTML knowledge so I am looking to brush up on my HTML knowledge and get more into PHP. I also am unsure weather I should be looking into XHTML or HTML5, or both so an answer to that would be splendid. I just want to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on other for my programming needs. I've searched Google for books but I'm just not sure which one is the "best" for me and makes for good practice and habits which brings me here.

• Game Development In C Only. Is it possible?

  I am a first year college student in India and want to make a small game as a this semester project. I am quite good at C and am learning it rapidly but I wanted to ask if developing a game entirely in C (no C++ or C#) I'd love to use these but for college projects, we have strict requirements of using only C. What I am looking for is a simple top view driving game. It won't have anything fancy and even the visual things will be powered by simple characters. For example, user controlled car can be represented by ¦ and edges of road by series of |'s. What do you think?

• How to limit concurrent file access on a Samba share?

  I have a Ubuntu 12.04 file server running Samba. There are 6 windows machines that access the server, as well as two people that will occasionally access files remotely. The problem that I am having is that the CAD/CAM software we are using doesn't seem to request file locks, meaning if two people open a file at the same time, the first person to close the file will get their changes overwritten if the second person saves the file. I tried changing the smb.conf to strict locking = yes but this doesn't seem to have any effect. File locking with excel seems to work fine, so I know that Samba is using the file locks...if they were put on the file in the first place. Is there a way (either in Samba or Ubuntu) to only allow one user to have a file open at a time? If not does anyone have any suggestions for managing a problem like this?

  Goal: Enabling HTML5 validation and  IntelliSense for Visual Studio 2010. By default it is set to XHTML 1.1. HTML5 support only came included with SP1 of Visual Studio 2010. However since HTML5 is not an official standard as yet and some of the 30 new elements are not suported in all browsers, so only a subset of the entire HTML5 specification is supported; support for both intellisense and validation for HTML5 with SP1. How to: After installing SP1 you have to tell Visual Studio to start using the HTML5 schema. Go to Tools -> Options, and then select Text Editor -> HTML -> Validation. Select HTML5 or XHTML5 as the target schema. So start building or converting older Visual Studio projects to HTML5 and CSS3 web applications.

Here is the man pages http://www.opengl.org/sdk/docs/man/xhtml/glTexCoordPointer.xml which states that I must set a pointer to the first element of the array that uses the texture cordinate. I prefer that my HTML be both XHTML and CSS standards complaint according to the W3C tests. IE9 promises to be not only standards compliant but much better in performance. I am looking forward to its release.

  I'm in process of migrating a JSF 1.2 application to JSF 2.x. My application is using the following APIs: maven-jetty-plugin (version 6.1.10) maven-compiler-plugin (version 2.3.1) myfaces-api & -impl (version 1.2.7) jsf-facelets (version 1.1.14) richfaces (version 3.3.3) javax servlet jstl (version 1.2) javax servlet-api (version 2.5) and some other plugins as well. I updated the versions in faces-config.xml file and removed Facelets 1.1.14 libs and replaced MyFaces 1.2 by JSF 2.x libs, however the application didn't work. I've already tried updating the element's class but this does not work if the browser's window has been opened maximized and no further size changes were made to the window (which is about 90% of the use cases we have for our product.... :( ) I'm stuck with a CSS-based solution however I think that I can make an exception in this case if it can easily be made IE7-specific (which means that other browsers will behave in a standard way with this). Please help!

  I have a problem with rendering my html page by the same browsers in different OS. There are 3 spans and position of each span is corrected through css(position:relative). But I have found out that the page that looks correct in firefox under Linux, shows not right at the same firefox(3.5.7) under Windows OS. Linux(Left - How it should be)/Windows(right): link text And the same with other browsers. What is the cause of this problem and how is possible to solve it. I would like to remove the accents (e,e,i,...) in the logins. Here is my query. Is there a character set that does not contain accents? • Server side Xforms form validation and integration into ASP.NET

  I have recently been investigating methods of creating web-based forms for an ASP.NET web application that can be edited and managed at runtime. For example an administrator might wish to add a new validation rule or a new set of fields. The holy grail would provide a means of specifying a form along with (potentially very complex) arbitrary validation rules, and allocation of data sources for each field. The specification would then be used to update the deployed form in the web application which would then validate submissions both on the client side and on the server side. My investigations led me to Xforms and a number of technologies that support it. One solution appears to be IBM Lotus Forms, but this requires a very large investment in terms of infrastructure, which makes it infeasible, although the forms designer may be useful as a stand-alone tool for creating the forms. I have also discounted browser plug-ins as the form must be publicly visible and cross-browser compliant. I have noticed that there are numerous javascript libraries that provide client side implementations given an Xforms schema. These would provide a partial solution but server side validation is still a requirement. Another option seems to involve the use of server side solutions such as the Java application Orbeon. Orbeon provides a tool for specifying the forms (although not as rich as Lotus Forms Designer), but the most interesting point is that it can translate an XForms schema into an XHTML form complete with validation. The fact that it is written in Java is not a big problem if it is possible to integrate with the existing ASP.NET application. So my question is whether anyone has done this before. It sounds like a problem that should have been solved but is inherently very complex. It seems possible to use an off-the-shelf tool to design the form and export it to an Xforms schema and xhtml form, and it seems possible to take that xforms schema and form and publish it using a client side library. What seems to be difficult is providing a means of validating the form submission on the server side and integrating the process nicely with .NET (although it seems the .NET community doesn't involve themselves with XForms; please correct me if I'm wrong on this count). I would be more than happy if a product provided something simple like a web service that could validate a submission against a schema. Maybe Orbeon does this but I'd be grateful if somebody in the know could point me in the right direction before I research it further. Many thanks.
