• How to implement Master-Detail with Multi-Selection in WPF?

  Hi, I plan to create a typical Master-Detail scenario, i.e. a collection of items displayed in a ListView via DataBinding to an ICollectionView, and details about the selected item in a separate group of controls (TextBoxes, NumUpDowns...). No problem so far, actually I have already implemented a pretty similar scenario in an older project. However, it should be possible to select multiple items in the ListView and get the appropriate shared values displayed in the detail view. This means, if all selected items have the same value for a property, this value should be displayed in the detail view. If they do not share the same value, the corresponding control should provide some visual clue for the user indicating this, and no value should be displayed (or an "undefined" state in a CheckBox for example). Now, if the user edits the value, this change should be applied to all selected items. Further requirements are: MVVM compatibility (i.e. not too much code-behind) Extendability (new properties/types can be added later on) Does anyone have experience with such a scenario? Actually, I think this should be a very common scenario. However, I could not find any details on that topic anywhere. Thanks! gehho. PS: In the older project mentioned above, I had a solution using a subclass of the ViewModel which handles the special case of multi-selection. It checked all selected items for equality and returned the appropriate values. However, this approach had some drawbacks and somehow seemed like a hack because (besides other smelly things) it was necessary to break the synchronization between the ListView and the detail view and handle it manually.

• WPF TexBox TwoWay Binding Problem when ValidationRules used

  I seem to have a problem with TwoWay DataBinding - my application has a window with a bunch of textboxes that allow to edit values of the properties they are bound to. Everything works well except for textboxes that also have a validation rule defined, in which case no text is displayed in the textbox when the window opens (binding back-to-source still works fine for those). If I remove Validation rule, everything's back to normal. I searched for an answer to this for a few hours now, but somehow did not even find anyone else complaining of the same issue. I am completely new to WPF, and I am sure it is just a silly mistake I have somewhere in my code... • C# Thread-safe Extension Method

Either way, I'm currently SOL. :) I want to be able to use an extension method to set properties on a class, but that class may (or may not) be updated on a non-UI thread, and derives from a class the enforces updates to be on the UI thread (which implements INotifyPropertyChanged, etc). • NHibernate + Remoting = ReflectionPermission Exception

  Hi all, We are dealing with a problem when using NHibernate with Remoting in a machine with full trust enviroment (actually that's our dev machine). The problem happens when whe try to send as a parameter an object previously retrieved from the server, that contains a NHibernate Proxy in one of the properties (a lazy one). As we are in the dev machine, there's no restriction in the trust level of the web app (it's set to Full) and, as a plus, we've configured NHibernate's and Castle's assemblies to full trust in CAS (even thinking that it'd not be necessary as the remoting app in IIS has the full trust level). Does anyone have any idea of what can be causing this exception? Stack trace below. • Minimizing SpringLdap dependencies.

  I would like to use SpringLDAP to do some simple username/password verification for authentication purposes. WHile the actual jar file is quite small (less than 1 meg) it seems to have a lot of dependencies as listed by link text. By alot i mean it seems to suck in over 50 things many which dont seem right such as spring-jdbc as I dont want any jdbc and only the ldap template class and its bare dependencies. Without wasting too much time is it possible to the spring-ldap with only a bare minimum number of dependencies which amount to something like: spring core spring ldap whatever logging deps they require. spring tx I dont see or appreciate why the rest of thes tuff is reuqired and was wondering can anyone verify they arent really needed in the end if one sticks to the basics. The other stuff i am referring too include: spring-orm // no jdbc beans // i dont want ioc. spring-aop // no need for aop. I intend to wire up the beans i will be using manually. I dont want more crap in there for what ammounts to setting a few properties, and want confirmation that I dont need what is probably there just to do the ioc stuff when all i want is the ldap stuff.

It built successfully and I am able to view the grid control on the form. Now if i try to view that form in designer, I am getting following error.. • TDD test data loading methods

  I am a TDD newb and I would like to figure out how to test the following code. I am trying to write my tests first, but I am having trouble for creating a test that touches my DataAccessor. I can't figure out how to fake it. I've done the extend the shipment class and override the Load() method; to continue testing the object. I feel as though I end up unit testing my Mock objects/stubs and not my real objects. I thought in TDD the unit tests were supposed to hit ALL of the methods on the object; however I can never seem to test that Load() code only the overriden Mock Load My tests were write an object that contains a list of orders based off of shipment number. I have an object that loads itself from the database. public class Shipment { //member variables protected List<string> _listOfOrders = new List<string>(); protected string _id = "" //public properties public List<string> ListOrders { get{ return _listOfOrders; } } public Shipment(string id) { _id = id; Load(); } //PROBLEM METHOD // whenever I write code that needs this Shipment object, this method tries // to hit the DB and fubars my tests // the only way to get around is to have all my tests run on a fake Shipment object. protected void Load() { _listOfOrders = DataAccessor.GetOrders(_id); } } I create my fake shipment class to test the rest of the classes methods .I can't ever test the Real load method without having an actual DB connection public class FakeShipment : Shipment { protected new void Load() { _listOfOrders = new List<string>(); } } Any thoughts? • Strange error when filling a data adapter.

  I am receiving the following error in my code (c#, .Net 3.5, VS2008) when I try to connect to an Excel sheet and fill a OleDbDataAdapter with the results of a query. First the error: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.   I'm having some trouble running a groovy servlet (groovlet) in tomcat that imports a library class. When I don't import anything the groovlet works correctly, but if I do import something that I expect to be on the classpath (I can import the same class successfully in a regular servlet), I see the following error: groovy.util.ScriptException: Could not parse scriptName: /MyGroovlet.groovy java.lang.RuntimeException: groovy.util.ScriptException: Could not parse scriptName: /MyGroovlet.groovy at groovy.servlet.GroovyServlet$1.call(GroovyServlet.java:123) ... • add jsf project facet in eclipse/ why need it?

  Hi, I started on JSF2.0. I followed a tutorial with no problem and all worked fine! I used Eclipse Helios. But I noticed something I can not understand. The tutorial said to add Project Facet for JSF 2. I did no such thing and all worked ok. So to follow tutorial exactly I did: Right-click on Project -Properties- Project Facets And JavaServer Faces check-box was not ticked. I assume this is what the tutorial means by Project Facet. I clicked on it and a Further Configuration Needed link appeared. I followed the link to a JSF capabilities (Modify Faceted Project) dialog, I selected as User library, my library of JSF(which is MyFaces) but I got the error message: Found multiple versions of the required class javax.faces.FactoryFinder. What is this error? Can't I add project facet after creating my project? And what do I need the project facet for? My (trivial) code indicates that JSF works ok, so what is the project Facet useful for? Thanks!

• JPA - Setting entity class property from calculated column?

  I'm just getting to grips with JPA in a simple Java web app running on Glassfish 3 (Persistence provider is EclipseLink). So far, I'm really liking it (bugs in netbeans/glassfish interaction aside) but there's a thing that I want to be able to do that I'm not sure how to do. I've got an entity class (Article) that's mapped to a database table (article). I'm trying to do a query on the database that returns a calculated column, but I can't figure out how to set up a property of the Article class so that the property gets filled by the column value when I call the query. If I do a regular "select id,title,body from article" query, I get a list of Article objects fine, with the id, title and body properties filled. This works fine. However, if I do the below: Query q = em.createNativeQuery("select id,title,shorttitle,datestamp,body,true as published, ts_headline(body,q,'ShortWord=0') as headline, type from articles,to_tsquery('english',?) as q where idxfti @@ q order by ts_rank(idxfti,q) desc",Article.class); (this is a fulltext search using tsearch2 on Postgres - it's a db-specific function, so I'm using a NativeQuery) You can see I'm fetching a calculated column, called headline. How do I add a headline property to my Article class so that it gets populated by this query? So far, I've tried setting it to be @Transient, but that just ends up with it being null all the time.

• How can I edit an exe's resources (File Description, Icon, etc.) using a command line utility?

  The whole story: I have created a fancy .NET program which has an installer created by the Visual Studio Installer (VSI). The VSI creates 2 files (setup.exe and MyProgramSetup.msi). I understand the reasons for both files being needed, however, I only want to distribute a SINGLE executable installer to users. I do not want them to see 2 files and have to choose between them. In order to do this I have merged the 2 files into a self-extracting archive using IExpress (as seen in this answer: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/535966/merge-msi-and-exe). This works well, however, the self-extracting archive that gets created has an ugly icon and confusing file info (the File Description is "Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor" with 43 black spaces after it). I need to replace the icon with my custom one and change some of the file properties like "Description", "Company", etc. I would like to have this automatically done as a build step so having a program which is a command line/console utility would be great. I've searched for a while now and can only find one program which does exactly what I want (ResourceTuner Console: http://www.heaventools.com/command-line_resource_editor.htm) but it costs an arm and a leg and my budget is $0. Does anyone know a better way to achieve what I want, or know of a program which can replace an executable's resources without having to use a GUI? By the way, I have also tried "SiComponents Resource Builder 3" which can't even open the executable, and "Julien Audo's ResEdit" which just crashes when I execute the command: "resedit.exe -convert "Modified Resources.rc" "MyProgramSetup.exe"

  I have a view-based iphone application that has a single play-pause button that plays an mp3 file. At the time of invoking my doPlayPauseButton() method, I 'd like to show the current time and total duration of this mp3 through the AVAudioPlayer instance I've created, called myAudioPlayer. I have placed two labels at the UI and i'm trying to assign the currentTime and duration properties to these label when the playing begins but my attempts have failed. • Asp.Net Cache, modify an object from cache and it changes the cached value

  Hi, I'm having an issue when using the Asp.Net Cache functionality. I add an object to the Cache then at another time I get that object from the Cache, modify one of it's properties then save the changes to the database. But, the next time I get the object from Cache it contains the changed values. So, when I modify the object it modifies the version which is contained in cache even though I haven't updated it in the Cache specifically. Does anyone know how I can get an object from the Cache which doesn't reference the cached version? i.e. Step 1: Item item = new Item(); item.Title = "Test"; Cache.Insert("Test", item, null, DateTime.Now.AddHours(1), System.Web.Caching.Cache.NoSlidingExpiration); Step 2: Item item = (Item)Cache.Get("test"); item.Title = "Test 1"; Step 3: Item item = (Item)Cache.Get("test"); if(item.Title == "Test 1"){ Response.Write("Object has been changed in the Cache."); } I realise that with the above example it would make sense that any changes to the item get reflected in cache but my situation is a bit more complicated and I definitely don't want this to happen.

Specifically, it enables developers to configure html error pages to be displayed in place of a error stack trace. -- I'm running it under the default app pool. Does anybody see the problem? • How to export Configuration of each IIS 6 Web Site using WMI

  Hi all, I need to export the WebSite Configuration (MetaBase) from IIS6 for a whole server, but I need each web site configuration to be saved separately. The result should be the same that can be obtained by right clicking on each Web Site in IIS Snap-in and selecting All Tasks-Save Configuration to a File. My idea is quite simple: 1- Using WMI, retrieve a list of Web Sites. 2- Also via WMI, export each configuration to a file having the same name of the Web Site. However, I'm having some difficulties, mainly due to the complexity of WMI and, in my opinion, the poor documentation of its classes. At the moment I found out how to enumerate Virtual Directories, but not Web Sites; while it's true that this method returns Web Sites as well, I can't see how to identify them among other virtual folders (a Web Site has different properties, which are not returned in the Virtual Directory Object), and I can't find the Web Site Description property, which I'd like to use to name the exported file. I thought about a workaround for all the above issues, but it would be more a hack than a real solution... Any help if appreciated. Thanks.

• Javascript scope chain

  Hi, I am trying to optimize my program. I think I understand the basics of closure. I am confused about the scope chain though. I know that in general you want a low scope (to access variables quickly). Say I have the following object: var my_object = (function(){ //private variables var a_private = 0; return{ //public //public variables a_public : 1, //public methods some_public : function(){ debugger; alert(this.a_public); alert(a_private); }; }; })(); My understanding is that if I am in the some_public method I can access the private variables faster than the public ones. Is this correct? My confusion comes with the scope level of this. When the code is stopped at debugger, firebug shows the public variable inside the this keyword. The this word is not inside a scope level. How fast is accessing this? Right now I am storing any this.properties as another local variable to avoid accessing it multiple times. Thanks very much!

• How can I read a DBF file with incorrectly defined column data types using ADO.NET?

  I have a several DBF files generated by a third party that I need to be able to query. I am having trouble because all of the column types have been defined as characters, but the data within some of these fields actually contain binary data. If I try to read these fields using an OleDbDataReader as anything other than a string or character array, I get an InvalidCastException thrown, but I need to be able to read them as a binary value or at least cast/convert them after they are read. The columns that actually DO contain text are being returned as expected. For example, the very first column is defined as a character field with a length of 2 bytes, but the field contains a 16-bit integer. I have written the following test code to read the first column and convert it to the appropriate data type, but the value is not coming out right. The first row of the database has a value of 17365 (0x43D5) in the first column. Running the following code, what I end up getting is 17215 (0x433F). I'm pretty sure it has to do with using the ASCII encoding to get the bytes from the string returned by the data reader, but I'm not sure of another way to get the value into the format that I need, other that to write my own DBF reader and bypass ADO.NET altogether which I don't want to do unless I absolutely have to. • Visual Studio Designer looses / ignores data

  I'm writing my own control - a datagridviewcolumn that displays integer values as texts like the comboboxcolumn can but without showing the combobox unless the cell is edited. I'm mostly there but I have problems with the databinding. I managed to get the necessary properties to appear in the designer but every time I set the datasource and close the editor the changes are dropped. • How to bind a table in a dataset to a WPF datagrid in C# and XAML

  I have been searching to hours for something very simple: bind a WPF datagrid to a datatable in order to see the columns at design-time. I can’t get any of the examples to work for me. Here is the C# code to populate the datatable InfoWork inside the dataset info: info = new Info(); InfoTableAdapters.InfoWorkTableAdapter adapter = new InfoTableAdapters.InfoWorkTableAdapter(); adapter.Fill(info.InfoWork); The problem is no matter how I declare ‘info’ or ‘infoWork’ Visual Studio/XAML can’t find it. I have tried: <Window.Resources> <ObjectDataProvider x:Key="infoWork" ObjectType="{x:Type local:info}" /> </Window.Resources> I have also tried this example from wpf.codeplex, but XAML doesn’t even like the “local:” keyword! <Window.Resources> <local:info x:Key="infoWork"/> </Window.Resources> There are really two main questions here: 1) How do I declare the table InfoWork in C# so that XAML can see it? I tried declaring it Public in the window class that XAML exists in with no success. 2) How do I declare the windows resource in XAML, specifcally the datatable inside the dataset? Out of curiosity, is there a reason that ItemsSource just doesn't show up as a property that be set in the properties design window?

• Textured Primitives in XNA with a first person camera

  So I have a XNA application set up. The camera is in first person mode, and the user can move around using the keyboard and reposition the camera target with the mouse. I have been able to load 3D models fine, and they appear on screen no problem. Whenever I try to draw any primitive (textured or not), it does not show up anywhere on the screen, no matter how I position the camera. Now, to allow managing the look of data being presented there are some mechanisms including so called Style Managers.
