• Challege: merging csv files intelligently!

  We are in the middle of changing web store platform and we need to import products' data from different sources. We currently have several different csv files from different it systems/databases because each system is missing some information. Fortunatly the product ids are the same so it's possible to relate the data using ids. We need to merge this data into one big csv file so we can import in into our new e-commerce site. My question: is there a general approach when you need to merge csv files with related data into one csv file? Are there any applications or tools that helps you out?

• Clojure closures and GC

  It is my understanding that the default ClassLoader used in Java (and thus, Clojure) holds on to pointers to any anonymous classes created, and thus, onto lambdas and closures. These are never garbage collected, and so represent a "memory leak". There is some investigation going on for Java 7 or 8 to adding an anonymous ClassLoader that will not retain references to these functions. In the mean time how are people dealing with writing long-running applications in languages like Clojure and Scala, that encourage the use of these constructs? Is there any possibility that Clojure could provide its own anonymous ClassLoader, extending the system one, but not holding onto created classes?

  Might be my question is abstract or out of context, but i am asking here since i have little idea how this happens. I am wondering how big application/ platform break down there application in to multiple module and how they able to manage modules dependencies. For example in some E-commerce application they tend to break down it in various modules like pricing,promotions,shipping.import/export and many more. when we develop those application we hardly think about the underlying modules and how they have been designed to provides functionalists. Most of those module are not web-applications but are standalone module and not deployed in the web-app as jar files. can any one help me to understand how they break up things or is there any standard way to do this.any help/resources to get insight will really be helpful

• Using CreateFileMapping between to programs - C

  Hello, I have two window form applications written in C, one holds a struct consisting of two integers, another will receive it using the CreateFileMapping. Although not directly related I want to have three events in place so each of the processes can "speak" to each other, one saying that the first program has something to pass to the second, one saying the first one has closed and another saying the second one has closed. What would be the best way about doing this exactly? I've looked at the MSDN entry for the CreateFileMapping operation but I'm still not sure as to how it should be done. I didn't want to start implementing it without having some sort of clear idea as to what I need to do. Thanks for your time.

It works perfectly on normal applications (for example, Notepad, browsers, etc.), but not on games (fullscreen or windowed mode). • Client / Server application for Video BroadCasting on LAN

  I m much of a newbie to client/server applications and networking.I am currently starting up a project in which we are planning to create an application or something like a website accessible only to clients in that LAN network.We want the server to upload videos so that the clients can view them whenever they want.Also the clients can upload videos.Also we want some kind of registration to provide authentication to avoid bogus videos.Also additional features that can be added on later like comment section,ratings,Groups etc. Basically what we want is to build mini-youtube but with one major difference , we want the application to be LAN based. This is the idea behind the project.But we dont know where to start from as we are new to this stuff and also we have like 1 year to work on the project.Please guide me as to what all softwares i'll be needing to get this working !

• Is there an easy way to concatenate several lines of text into a string without constantly appending

  So I essentially need to do this: String text = "line1\n"; text += "line2\n"; text += "line3\n"; useString( text ); There is more involved, but that's the basic idea. Is there anything out there that might let me do something more along the lines of this though? DesiredStringThinger text = new DesiredStringThinger(); text.append( "line1" ); text.append( "line2" ); text.append( "line3" ); useString( text.toString() ); Obviously, it does not need to work exactly like that, but I think I get the basic point across. There is always the option of writing a loop which processes the text myself, but it would be nice if there is a standard Java class out there that already does something like this rather than me needing to carry a class around between applications just so I can do something so trivial.   Most web applications depend on some kind of session with the user (for instance, to retain login status). The session id is kept as a cookie in the user's browser and sent with every request. To make it hard to guess the next user's session these session-ids need to be sparse and somewhat random. The also have to be unique. The question is - how to efficiently generate session ids that are sparse and unique? This question has a good answer for unique random numbers, but it seems not scalable for a large range of numbers, simply because the array will end up taking a lot of memory.

I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s.   hi to all! i am suffering with an unexpected behavior,here is problem definitation i have applications communicating on LAN via UDP protocol, i am reading the Ip and Port no from a text file, initially the Ip and Port is working nicely but after some time the Ip that is a char array is corrupted and it takes garbage values, also the file writing is effected by this i mean the values that are in ip array are also written in text file that is written by the same application, i cant understand what is the problem. sorry for weak english. thanx in advance.

• Inheritance vs specific types in Financial Modelling for cashflows

  Hello, I have to program some financial applications where I have to represent a schedule of flows. The flows can be of 3 types: - fee flow (just a lump payment at some date) - floating rate flow (the flow is dependant of an interest rate to be determined at a later date) - fixed rate flow (the flow is dependant of an interest rate determined when the deal is done) I need to keep the whole information and I need to represent a schedule of these flows. Originally I wanted to use inheritance and create three classes FeeFlow, FloatingFlow, FixedFlow all inheriting from ICashFlow and implement some method GetFlowType() returning an enum then I could dynamic_cast the object to the correct type. That would allow me to have only one vector to represent my schedule. What do you think of this design, should I rather use three vectors vector, vector and vector to avoid the dynamic casts ?

• Should old/legacy/unused code be deleted from source control repository?

  I've encountered this in multiple projects. As the code base evolves, some libraries, applications, and components get abandoned and/or deprecated. Most people prefer to keep them in. The usual argument is that the code does not really take any space, it can be left alone until needed again. So a repository slowly turns into a cesspool of legacy code, where it's hard to find anything. Some people delete old code, since it creates clutter, raises more questions for new people, and you can restore any old snapshot of the code base anyway. However you can't always find the old code if you don't know where to look, as none of the (common) VCS I know offer search over the entire repository including all historical revisions, and the only way to search the old files is to check out the revision where the deleted file exists. What would be a good approach to repository management?

• Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

  Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?

I have been developing asp.net websites and have mainly been using the Visual studio toolbox build in controls supported by the AjaxcontrolToolkit and the applications have been mainly used inhouse running on our company intranet. But now a new client wants a much more professional looking, commercial web application and they have a budget for some user components for use in the application. Any recommendations where value for money will be realised. Interested in components that will integrate well with ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 or even .NET 4.

• Delphi 7 - Why does Windows 7 change encoding of characters in runtime?

  I have a delphi 7 form: and my code: when I run this form in Windows 7, I see: In design time, form had polish letters in first label, but it doesn't have them in runtime. It looks ok on Vista or Windows XP. When I set caption of second label in code, everything works fine and characters are properly encoded. First 5 codes of top label on Windows 7: 65 97 69 101 83 First 5 codes of top label on Windows Vista/XP: 165 185 202 234 140 First 5 codes of bottom label on every system: 165 185 202 234 140 Windows 7 changes encoding, why? My system settings seem to be ok. I have proper language set for non-unicode applications in control panel.

  I have created an windows service. I want to open some windows based application from this service. But my windows service is unable to start desktop applications. To enable the access I had to do the following steps: Opened the administrative tool "Services" Right clicked on my service and had to select "properties" Then in the "Log On" tab, selected "Allow service to interact with desktop". After that my service can open desired windows based processes. Can I configure my windows service in the code (C#) to access the desktop so that I won't have to change the access permission manually after installation?

• Are there some good and modern alternatives to Javadoc?

  Let's face it: You don't need to be a designer to see that default Javadoc looks ugly. There are some resources on the web which offer re-styled Javadoc. But the default behaviour represents the product and should be as reasonably good-looking. Another problem is the fact that the usability of Javadoc is not up-to-date compared to other similar resources. Especially huge projects are hard to navigate using Firefox's quick search. Practical question: Are there any standalone (desktop) applications which are able to browse existing Javadoc in a more usable way than a browser would? I'm thinking about something like Mono's documentation browser. Theoretical question: Does anyone know, if there some plans to evolve Javadoc, in a somehow-standardized way? I deployed this application using aspnet_compiler and a nant build file like <target name="deploy.advance.application"> <exec program="${aspnet.compiler}" commandline='-f -u -c -p ${dir.website.advance.application} -v temp ${dir.publish.advance.application}' /> <mkdir dir="${dir.publish.advance.application}\App_Data" /> </target> Now I started to implment PortableArea, at least LoginArea with all pages embedded, required by the MvcContrib PA. On my local machine works fine, but on testing environment (when I deploy the application with aspnet_compiler) the application could not found Login.aspx view. So the question is how to deploy such applications? There is a directive from aspnet_compiler to tell the compiler that there are some embedded resources? Thanks

  Im new to python, but I was thinking about making a program with python to give to my friends. They don't know much about computers so if I asked them to install python by them selves they couldn't do it, but what if I could make an installer that downloads some version of python that only has what is needed for my file to run and make an exe file that would run the .py file in its own python interpreter . I also did a Google search and saw the freezing applications I could use to make the code into exe files to distribute (cx_freeze I use python 3.2), but not all of my friends have Windows computers and I rather Have my program so in each new version it auto updates by making a patch to .py file and not completely re-installing it .

The FC figures out what page you want, loads the specific page Controller (*EDIT* which extends an abstract Controller Object */EDIT*), which gets anything it needs from Models, and then calls the appropriate View. Very basic. But now, I need to make an admin section (quasi-CMS). How does a login system fit into the grand scheme of things? Do you set controllers as needing a login? If so, how? What If you only want certain views of a controller requiring login? Thanks in advance.

• CSS cross browser compatibility on Ubuntu

  Hello, I'm currently working in web development and my default desktop is Ubuntu and I'm kind of happy with the setup and applications I got going. But I need to test web pages for cross browser compatibility while still being on Ubuntu. I have gone through hell trying to get IE7 or IE8 (with wine) to run on ubuntu and when they finally worked they were very buggy and the graphics/scrolling was insanely slow. Of course there is the option of virtual box but again, too much GBytes just to run a small application! So to all the CSS gurus out there, how can I continue with my beloved Ubuntu and still deliver a good quality (tested) page. Thank you.

  To preface I am new to web development. I am looking at creating a core set of RESTful web services around a valuable document library of sorts (initial CRUD abilities). In doing so I am theoretically creating a perfectly re-usable and scalable back-end to be used by unanticipated applications in the future. My question centers around the best practice for doing this. My initial requirement has me also creating a unique front end. Would I make the front end and back end completely separate projects to enhance the re-usability. It would increase overhead. Looking at using GWT, Restlet, and JEE technology stack if this influences the setup at all.

• TFS Automated Builds to Code Packages

  I would like to hear the best practices or know how people perform the following task in TFS 2008. I am intending on using TFS for building and storing web applications projects. Sometimes these projects can contain 100's of files (*.cs, *.acsx etc) During the lifetime of the website, a small bug will get raised resulting in say a stylesheet change, and a change to default.aspx.cs for example. On checking in these changes to TFS, and automated build would be triggered (great!), however for deploying the changes to the target production machine, I only need to deploy for example: style.css default.asx MyWebApplications.dll So my question is, can MSBuild be customized to generate a "code pack" of only the files which require deploying to the production server based on the changeset which cause the re-build?
