• Google ranking - Modal views - google analytics events [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to diagnose a search engine ranking drop? 5 answers I modified a site recently : - I added many google analytics events, to better understand user behaviour. - I added also two buttons on almost all the pages of the site. Those buttons show modal-views (I am using bootstrap) with questions about user opinion. This modals views are on almost all pages of the site. After this modification the ranking of the site decreased on google search from the second place to the seconde page :( Is it the events-collected or the model-views added ? If the model-views are the reason, then how to better do similar surveys ? Did you have please similar experience, or explanation to this ? Perhaps it is the effect of panda4 update. In this cas, what can I look for to improve the site. How to debug the problem/reasons ?

• pwmconfig: "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed"

  I'm trying to reduce my fan speed with fancontrol and pwmanager because, despite the temperatures being the same, they are much louder on Linux (Ubuntu Gnome 14.04) than on Windows. I've followed the instructions in the first answer here but when running pwmanager I get pwmconfig: "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed" I know that my system has working thermal sensors because PSensor has no trouble telling me my CPU temp and GPU temp. I would appreciate any help you can give in helping me reduce my fan speed to that of Windows (which uses the ASUS AI Suite 3 software which came with the Z87-A motherboard, if that's relevant).

• Is there now any way to convert mp3 files to m4a or aac 192kbit?

  Since about two years now I am trying to find a way to convert high quality mp3 files to m4a or aac files with a fixed bitrate 192k. Please don't suggest using another format - i thought this through as far as it goes. The problem here is: ffmpeg obvioulsy can't convert to a higher bitrate than 152k. Even when it says it does so the resulting files still have 152k instead of 192k. ffmpeg also has/had a bug not writing the bitrate into the audio file tags which means when testing you have to calculate the bitrate manually by dividing the filesize by the length of the audio in seconds (resulting in 152k - see above) choosing faac as converter gets me the same results other programs don't work reliably (see this thread Howto convert audio files to *.m4a? I know that this is not an original new problem but I am wondering if there is still no way to convert with ubuntu/kubuntu 12.04 after a lot time passed and I can't find some of the bug issues mentioned in the other thread anymore. So: Is there a solution after all?

• Self-documenting code vs Javadocs?

  Recently I've been working on refactoring parts of the code base I'm currently dealing with - not only to understand it better myself, but also to make it easier for others who are working on the code. I tend to lean on the side of thinking that self-documenting code is nice. I just think it's cleaner and if the code speaks for itself, well... That's great. On the other hand we have documentation such as javadocs. I like this as well, but there's a certain risk that comments here gets outdated (as well as comments in general of course). However, if they are up-to-date they can be extremely useful of say, understanding a complex algorithm. What are the best practices for this? Where do you draw the line between self-documenting code and javadocs?

  It's been only several years since I migrated from Visual Source Safe to SVN. And SVN for me is still kinda "WOW! I can do so many things! SVN is so cool!" But many people around me keep saying "SVN? Really? Meh..." And there's so many of them that I'm worried. Should I move my team to Git / Mercurial or some other fancy thing? I know I sound ridiculous and the obvious answer would be "stay with what works for YOU". SVN does work for me... But every time I create a new project in my repository I keep asking myself - may be this was the time to move? So... Is SVN really that bad? Do I miss a huge opportunity by sticking with it?

• Placing of copyright notice in source code

  I'm about to release a project of mine that I'm really proud of under the GNU GPL and I have some questions: Should one attach a copyright notice on each and every source code file from their project? I think it's a bit ridiculous to claim copyright on a 3 line abstract class. Should I attach a copyright notice only to really important source code files? Can I not attach the whole standard thingy? Because it's big and bulky and gets in the way... If so, is the variant below ok/enough? Copyright year firstname lastname. This program is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation.

• Scheme of work contract

  I'm in the process of setting up a (one man) company and got to a item on my list "contracts and insurance". I will primary be offering custom software development but may also offer some "open source solutions", install, configure / manage e.t.c. I'm not sure how to approach a contract with a potential customer. I want to be flexible and offer the customer rights over the product (when not using open source of course) but I obviously want / need to be able to reuse code, already written and any future work. Is this possible or is it just something that people do but strictly they shouldn't? Is there a standard freelancing / contacting developer agreement? Going to a lawyer I'm sure is an answer but a very expensive one! If not do you end up with a fresh contract with each job / client and lots of trips to solicitors?

  I tried to download Ubuntu 12.04 through Windows Installer (Wubi), but I get this error message: An error occurred: Could not retrieve the required disk image For more information, please see the log file: c:\user(username)\adddata\local\temp\wubi-12.04-rev266.log I tried to locate the file, but I can't find it, it's probably hidden. I know there's already a similar question asked, but I don't understand proxy thing Downloading error "Could not retrieve the required disk image " I was wondering will I get this same problem if I download via USB stick or CD? • Is there a way of using HTTPS with Amazon's CloudFront CDN and CNAMEs?

  We use Amazon's CloudFront CDN with custom CNAMEs hanging under the main domain (static1.example.com). Although we can break this uniform appearance and use the original whatever123wigglyw00.cloudfront.net URLs to utilise HTTPS, is there another way? Do Amazon or any other similar provider offer HTTPS CDN hosting? Is TLS and its selective encryption available for use somewhere (SNI: Server Name Indication)? Foot note: assuming that the answer is no, but just in the hope someone knows. EDIT: Now using Google App Engine https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/ssl for CDN hosting with SSL support.

They suggest rather using IF and not to wait till the end of a method without real need. Now, this if/else advice confuses me. Do they say that I should not use if/else at all (!) or to avoid if/else nesting? Also, if they refer to the nesting of if/else, should I not do even a single nesting or I should limit it to max 2 nestings (as some recommends)? When I say single nesting, I mean this: if (...) { if (...) { } else { } } else { } EDIT Also tools like Resharper will suggest reformatting if/else statements. It usually concerts them to if stand-alone statement, and sometimes even to ternary expression.

• What has been your experience with paid support from Canonical ?

  I am considering buying "Ubuntu Desktop Support" from Canonical for 2 reasons: I have a couple of issues that I would like professional help with. ( Specifically a recurring kernel panic, and a slow wireless connection. ) I would like to lend a helping hand toward supporting Ubuntu financially. However, I am a bit worried that once I transfer the money, they will end up just referring me to the bug tracker on Launchpad. The interviewer asked me a question and at that time I didn't know the answer but if I had been asked about just 4 months ago, I could have answered it. The question was from new language that I learned just 4 months ago. But I just get overview of the language and just get started working on that. Whenever I face difficultly, I google it. • Bad idea to display mail server info in public github project?

  I have the project for work that requires me to send e-mails to people using our work mail server. The server doesn't require authentication. Part of my project is using a Java-Helper I'm developing on GitHub. I don't know if I completely understand how it all works, but I'm guessing it would be a bad idea to have the server information available on GitHub for the world to see. Is this correct? After thought: I'm not going to put it in the Java-Helper because that wouldn't be helpful for anyone but me. but I'm still curious to know the answer to this question :) Thanks!

• Unable to remove some unity lenses

  I removed the files, video, photos and friends lenses with the following command. sudo apt-get purge unity-lens-files unity-lens-video unity-lens-photos unity-lens-friends Although the corresponding results have disappeared from dash, only the friends tab has been removed. There still are tabs for files, video and photos, albeit empty. How do I remove these empty tabs? I use Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander. I understand that this issue didn't exist in 12.04. The directory structure of unity lenses seems to have changed from 12.04 to 13.10. Earlier the lenses were stored in /usr/share/unity/lenses/.   So I am interested in Computational Investing and came across this problem on a wiki page: Write a program to discover the answer to this puzzle:"Let's say men and women are paid equally (from the same uniform distribution). If women date randomly and marry the first man with a higher salary, what fraction of the population will get married?" I don't have much knowledge in probability theory, so I'm not really sure how to implement this in code. My thinking: Populate two arrays(female,male) with random salary values from a uniform distribution. Randomly pair one female and one male array element and see if condition of higher salary is met. If it is, increment a counter. Divide counter by population and get percentage. Is this the correct logic? Do woman continually date until there is no males left with higher salaries than women?

• Keyboard Mouse Problem

  I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop (Core 2 Duo Sony Vaio) and am having a problem with the external keyboard and mouse. When I first logged in the left mouse button does not work, this can be solved by unplugging the external keyboard/mouse's USB connector and then plugging it back in again. But Then randomly other problems happen. (Shift gets stuck, keys don't work etc) The keyboard and mouse are a generic brand wireless (A4 Tech) that I got for cheap. Both work OK under windows so this is a major pain.

• Unity launcher autohide leaves "ghost" behind?

  In 12.04 I had the launcher set to autohide, which worked perfectly. However in 12.10 I am getting a strange "ghost" issue. Take this screenshot, with me having a maximised google chrome window, mousing over the back button. As well as this, I also get another ghosting issue when I have the panel set with an opacity, whereby whatever is in approximately the middle left of the screen gets mirrored up to to panel, but only when I move/switch to a window. But that one is not so annoying as the autohide bug, how can I fix that?

• Is it unwise to blacklist an IP address?

  We have a form on a commercial website which has been abused (but only once or twice) by someone from a particular IP address. A colleague wants to blacklist that IP address from the website. Seems to me that's overkill, and that there's a risk that genuine customers sharing that same IP address would be blacklisted too. I suppose a big part of my question is how many people might be sharing that same IP address and could be affected by our blacklist. I suspect that's a "how long's a piece of string" question but some ballpark answer would be really helpful. We're in the UK if that's significant.

• How can I reach over 100% volume with a keyboard shortcut?

  sometimes the sound of videos isn't enough for me. so i reach the sound indicator , over sound preferences and change it to a level higher than 100%. the question is how can i do it from the keyboard? now i can control the volume from the keyboard but it's maximum is 100%. is there a way to do that? EDIT 1: how to use amixer to do it? (as Lyrositor suggested) EDIT2: the closest answer , as Jo-erland, suggested is to set a hotkey to bring up the gnome-volume-control, and then to use left and right arrows to change volume also beyond the 100% mark. any other suggestions, to make this 1 step only? is it possible to set a hotkey to do a sequence of commands ?

• SOLVED BleachBit: How to Completely Clear URL History in Firefox?

  14.04 / Firefox 29.0 I've been using Bleachbit to clear usage/file history, and for the most part it works great. However, it doesn't seem to clear the website hostnames out of the URL, at all. These addresses are not bookmarked. Also, the total URL isn't preserved, just the hostname. Visit site http://www.bluesnews.com/some_random_URL_string Exit Firefox Run Bleachbit, with ALL Firefox options selected Restart Firefox Check history: completely empty, other than bookmarked sites. www.bluesnews is NOT bookmarked Type "blue" which is Firefox automatically completes as "http://www.bluesnews.com/" Alternate Step #3: Use Firefox's built-in "Clear History" and select ALL entries with a time frame of "Everything". Same result as above. My inquiry in BB forums hasn't been responded to. I found Dan's proposed solution, however changing autocomplete in about:config only turns off the function, it doesn't actually stop storing URLs.   I know there are site tools to check if your webpage is alive, has compression, etc but lets not get into that. What are useful sites to paste code in and to share links to it? The three i know are http://codepad.org/ shows source and runs code online http://www.pastie.org/ share source with syntax highlighting http://jsfiddle.net/ great for JS help or for the occasional test. What else do you know of? One answer per question. I'll let lints and validators slide since you do paste code into them. Mention a weakness if you do know one so others wont be surprised or disappointed.
