• Can Anything be Done to Make Improv (a 1993 Win 3.1 App) handle larger Files?

  My very favorite spradsheet is Improv, a 1993 Windows 3.1 application. It still puts Excel to shame for building spreadsheets and writing formulas. The only problem is because Improv was written when 1 Meg of RAM was state of the art, it becomes unstable when working with larger spreadsheets and often crashes and/or corrupts the data file. I am working on a project that greatly exceeds Improv's limits. Although it will ultimately require more robust databasing capability, I could save a lot of critical time if I could delay that headache and continue working in Improv for now. To that end, I moved to the only product I could find that comes close, Quantrix, which is nothing more than Improv updated to handle large spreadsheets and utilize today's technologies. The problems with Quantrix are its speed (significantly slower than Improv) and its $1000 price (which I cannot afford). I have already had 3 15 day extensions after the initial 30 day trial, so my time to use Quantrix as a bridge is at its end. Searches for Improv over the years have gotten me nowhere and, not surprisingly after reading some posts on this site, I got nothing for the money and time invested to find a programmer to write code to "fix" this problem. Improv is freely available as "abandonware" at http://vetusware.com/download/LotusImprov2.1/?id=5797 , and the best background info can be found on Wikipedia and at "Moose's Greatest Software Products of All Time - Lotus Improv" http://moosevalley.fhost.com.au/mooses_review_page_lotus_improv.html It is critically urgent for me to focus on analyzing the data asap. Working in a stable Improv would, without question, be the fastest route. To that end, I am looking for answers to the following questions and anything else that might be helpful: 1) Is it lawful to hire someone to fix Improv for my own use? If so, 2) About how much should it cost? 3) About how long should it take? 4) What skills should I be looking for &/or how should a post be worded? 5) Is there a niche site where it should it be posted? 6) What questions can I ask to quickly screen candidates? Since I am not a programmer, I need questions the answers to which leave no room to confuse me, whether intentional or not. For example, what tools or players should someone with an acceptable competency level have knowledge of?

• Working with Windows and Unix

  Beware of new line characters One of the most frequent issues we encounter in Tech Support is the corruption of files that are transferred between Windows and Unix.   The transfer can occur at any stage, but ultimately involves a transfer of a file using an ftp client that is running on Windows;  it could be ftp or filezilla. Windows uses two characters to mark the end of a line in a text file (CR/LF),carriage return, linefeed.   Unix uses a single character (CR). In all situations, it is best to use binary mode transfer for all files, including ascii text files. Common problems: upload a core file from unix to windows using ftp in ascii mode.The file is going to be larger on Windows than Unix.ftp doesn't know if this is a text file with real line-ends, it takes every ascii CR and transmits two ascii characters CR/LF.The core file, tar file, library ... will be corrupted when transferred to Oracle. download a shell script to Windows, and transfer it to Unix using ftpIf the file is edited on Windows, the unix script line-end chars will be doubled.Unix doesn't know how to handle that, and will likely tell you the script is not executable.Why?  The first line of a shell script ( called "sh-bang" ), identifies the command interpreter the unix shell should use for this script.   Common examples:#/bin/sh#/bin/ksh#/bin/bash#/bin/perl#/bin/sh^M    # will not be understood.#/bin/env ksh # special syntax.  Find ksh and run it dos2unix is a common utility found on most unix platforms, that repairs the issue of Windows LineEnd characters in unix script files.   I've written my own flavor of this utility for use in Tech Support and build environments, that is a bit easier to use, and has some nice side-effects. accepts a list of files:   dos2unix *.sh repairs the file in-place.  Doesn't generate a new file you have to name retains the same timestamp;  it is the encoding that changed, not the file content. Here are the versions of dos2unix for each of the environments we work in.They are compressed with gzip, to avoid the ftp ascii transfer trap,and because I am quite limited in the number of files I can upload to this blog. • Will not supporting IE or older browsers drive away potential visitors/users of my site? [closed]

  Normally a SO browser but this question doesn't fit there, hopefully it fits here. I just want to ask from web designers' point of view if it's wrong to not care about supporting Internet Explorer or older browsers. The site I'm designing looks great in all browsers except IE9-. There are certain things that IE doesn't support or behave like other browsers; webkit stuff, some CSS styles, drop-and-drop files from OS etc etc, but it all works great in Safari, FireFox, Chrome etc. Should I be that concerned? I know there are several people that use IE, but it's limitations have just been causing me more work by having to come up with workarounds. From what I've read, many of the issues I've been having should be solved with IE10, but not everybody keeps up to date. I know of several people who are still using IE6! Again, I'm hoping this is the right place to ask a question like this, and if not, please point me to the right stack exchange site instead of just downvoting me. Thanks! EDIT: Upon further research.... So far this year, IE(all versions) and Chrome have been neck and neck as the top, with IE only squeaking by Chrome, and FireFox a close 3rd. But looking at the top 10 browsers, IE6 doesn't even show up on this list in which the lowest percentage is 1.92%. However, my site will not be going to a live beta until October or November, and I'm hoping that IE10 will have more features coded into it. Currently, I've written my upload page which is a "drag-and-drop files from the OS" type to simply display "IE is not supported", leaving no other option for IE users to upload pictures because I've spent so much time writing the uploader which does many things other than just upload the files. I will be changing this kinda cold "Access Denied" to a suggestion to upgrade, or install other browsers, with download links for each. Big thanks for the posts here and the interesting links!

• Application using JOGL stays in Limbo when closing

  I'm writing a game using Java and OpenGL using the JOGL bindings. I noticed that my game doesn't terminate properly when closing the window even though I've set the closing operation of the JFrame to EXIT_ON_CLOSE. I couldn't track down where the problem was so I've made a small reproduction case. Note that on some computers the program terminates normally when closing the window but on other computers (notably my own) something in the JVM keeps lingering, this causes the JFrame to never be disposed and the application to never exit. I haven't found something in common between the computers that had difficulty terminating. All computers had Windows 7, Java 7 and the same version of JOGL and some terminated normally while others had this problem. So what keeps lingering? I'm not sure. I've made some screenshots. The application running normally. The application after the JFrame is closed, note that the JVM still hasn't exited or printed a return code. The application after it was force closed. Note the return code -1, so it wasnt just the JVM standing by or something the application really hadn't exited yet. So what is keeping the application in Limbo? Might it be the circular reference between the GLCanvas and the JFrame? I thought the GC could figure that out. If so how should I deal with that when I want to exit? Is there any other clean-up required when using JOGL? I've tried searching but it doesn't seem to be necessary. Edit, to clarify: there are 2 dispose functions dispose(GLAutoDrawable arg) which is a member of GLEventListener and dispose() which is a member of JFrame. The first one is called correctly (but I wouldn't know what to there, destroying the GLAutoDrawable or the GLCanvas gives an infinite exception loop) the second one is never called.

• [AJAX Numeric Updown Control] Microsoft JScript runtime error: The number of fractional digits is out of range

  If you have using Ajax control toolkits a lot (which I will skip the parts on where to download and how to configure it in Visual Studio 2010), you might have encountered some bugs or limitations of the controls, or rather, some weird behaviours. I would call them weird behaviours though. Recently, I've been working on a Ajax numeric updown control, which i remember clearly it was working fine without problems. In fact, I use 2 numeric updown control this time. So I went on to configure it to be as simple as possible and I will just use the default up and down buttons provided by it (so that I won't need to design my own). I have two textbox controls to display the value controlled by the updown control. One for month, and another for year. <asp:TextBox ID="txtMonth" runat="server" CssClass="txtNumeric" ReadOnly="True" Width="150px" /> <asp:TextBox ID="txtYear" runat="server" CssClass="txtNumeric" ReadOnly="True" Width="150px" /> So I will now drop 1 numeric updown control for each of the textboxes. <asp:NumericUpDownExtender ID="txtMonth_NumericUpDownExtender"     runat="server" TargetControlID="txtMonth" Maximum="12" Minimum="1" Width="152"> </asp:NumericUpDownExtender>                          <asp:NumericUpDownExtender ID="txtYear_NumericUpDownExtender"     runat="server" TargetControlID="txtYear" Width="152"> </asp:NumericUpDownExtender>                                                  You noticed that I configure the Maximum and Minimum value for the first numericupdown control, but I never did the same for the second one (for txtYear). That's because it won't work, well, at least for me. So I remove the Minimum="2000" and Maximum="2099" from there. Then I would configure the initial value to the the current year, and let the year to flow up and down freely. If you want, you want write the codes to restrict it. • A better way to organize your Silverlight Code Snippets.

  I hate re-writing code. I also hate it when I find a great code snippet on the web and forget to bookmark it or it gets lost in my endless sea of bookmarks. So what do you do to get around this? This is the question that I was asking myself at the end of 2010. How can I get my Silverlight code organized? My requirements for a snippet manager were: Needs to be FREE. An easy way to view XAML/C# code behind together in one “view”. I wanted the ability to store the code snippets in cloud in case my HDD dies. Searchable Keywords to quickly find code snippets. I started looking for a snippet manager that would allow me to do just that and finally found Snippet Manager. Before going any further, I think that one of the most important things to note here is that this software supports 37 languages. It’s not just for Silverlight developers nor C# only guys. The software supports Java, SQL and even COBOL.   Below is a screenshot of the Snippet Manager that shows my Silverlight code snippet. You will notice that I have highlighted two sections. The top part is my XAML and the bottom is my C# code behind. I’ve included a sample below of my code snippets so that you can get an idea of how I organized it. Another thing that’s great about this software is that it supports plain text. I added some connection strings in the TEXT section below.  Once you have finished adding your code snippets, you can store them in the cloud. I created a FTP directory called “snippets” on my FTP Server and hit the upload button once I am finished adding my new codes snippets. This will allow me to use the code snippets on another computer with this application on my USB Key. See screenshots below: Enter your FTP credentials below: Hit the Uploads button on the Toolbar: Login in to your FTP Server and verify the following files are now on the FTP Server: Another great feature of the Snippet Manager is that you can also integrate this into VS2010 by clicking Tools –> External Tools: And setting up your External Screen to point to the Executable: You can now launch it by going to Tools –> Snippet Manager. If you want you could also a shortcut to launch the program with HotKeys. As you can see, this is a nice little program that includes everything needed to organize your code snippets very clean. • Javascript Inheritance Part 2

  A while back I wrote about Javascript inheritance, trying to figure out the best and easiest way to do it (http://geekswithblogs.net/PhubarBaz/archive/2010/07/08/javascript-inheritance.aspx). That was 2 years ago and I've learned a lot since then. But only recently have I decided to just leave classical inheritance behind and embrace prototypal inheritance. For most of us, we were trained in classical inheritance, using class hierarchies in a typed language. Unfortunately Javascript doesn't follow that model. It is both classless and typeless, which is hard to fathom for someone who's been using classes the last 20 years. For the last two or three years since I've got into Javascript I've been trying to find the best way to force it into the class model without much success. It's clunky and verbose and hard to understand. I think my biggest problem was that it felt so wrong to add or change object members at run time. Every time I did it I felt like I needed a shower. That's the 20 years of classical inheritance in me. Finally I decided to embrace change and do something different. I decided to use the factory pattern to build objects instead of trying to use inheritance. Javascript was made for the factory pattern because of the way you can construct objects at runtime. In the factory pattern you have a factory function that you call and tell it to give you a certain type of object back. The factory function takes care of constructing the object to your specification. Here's an example. Say we want to have some shape objects and they have common attributes like id and area that we want to depend on in other parts of your application. So first thing to do is create a factory object and give it a factory method to create an abstract shape object. The factory method builds the object then returns it. var shapeFactory = { getShape: function(id){ var shape = { id: id, area: function() { throw "Not implemented"; } }; return shape; }}; Now we can add another factory method to get a rectangle. It calls the getShape() method first and then adds an implementation to it. getRectangle: function(id, width, height){ var rect = this.getShape(id); rect.width = width; rect.height = height; rect.area = function() { return this.width * this.height; }; return rect;} That's pretty simple right? No worrying about hooking up prototypes and calling base constructors or any of that crap I used to do. Now let's create a factory method to get a cuboid (rectangular cube). The cuboid object will extend the rectangle object. To get the area we will call into the base object's area method and then multiply that by the depth. getCuboid: function(id, width, height, depth){ var cuboid = this.getRectangle(id, width, height); cuboid.depth = depth; var baseArea = cuboid.area; cuboid.area = function() { var a = baseArea.call(this); return a * this.depth; } return cuboid;} See how we called the area method in the base object? First we save it off in a variable then we implement our own area method and use call() to call the base function. For me this is a lot cleaner and easier than trying to emulate class hierarchies in Javascript.

• Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 1: Why Build Smart Phone Apps

  This is part 1 in a series of post based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. Intro Most of us already carry smartphones. We play games on them. We keep up with what is going on with our friends and our favorite teams. We take pictures of our kids at their events. But the question is if that is all they are good for. Many companies have aspects of their business that lend themselves to being performed by mobile devices. Some of them lean toward larger device such as tablets, but many can be executed on smartphones. This and the following articles will discuss some of the possible applications of smartphone technology for businesses, the platforms that are available and the considerations you need to make when building them. I'll take a look at some specific scenarios and wrap up with a couple of capabilities that are just emerging that can be used in the future. Why Build Enterprise Smartphone Applications So what are some of the ways that you can leverage smartphone technology to gain efficiency in your business or a clients business. There are a few major areas that I have seen mobile platforms being an advantage to. Your mobile sales force is a key candidate for leveraging smartphone apps.  They can visit clients in their retail location and place orders on site. It is a more personal approach which can gain you customer loyalty.  A sales person may also gather information about the way a client does business or who their target market is. This allows them you to focus marketing information or build customized support for your customer. You may also have need to track physical inventory in a store. This is something that has historically been done with laser scanners, but with the camera capabilities in today's phones and tablets it is possible to use more general multi-purpose devices.  This can save costs on both hardware and telecommunication contracts. Delivery verification is another area that historically has been the domain of specialized devices but can now be accomplished with smartphones.  This also reduces costs because it is also used for communicating with the driver and other operations.  Add to that the navigation capability of smartphones and you can see how the return on investment increases. Executives are always on the go. They spend most of their time in meetings and yet they need access to decision making information at their finger tips. With a smartphone app they can get alerts when major sales are closed or critical accounting process are completed that may need their attention. They can also answer questions by instantly pulling up BI reports. I have often heard operations support people say that they need things like VPN and RDP from their phones. If they can also have notifications of outages or critical support requests they can be react to situations without needing to be tied to their desks. • How to get jQuery EasyUI datagrid and treegrid to load in background?

  I am trying build a jQuery EasyUI datagrid or treegrid out of a large query. Apparently the database takes long enough to respond that I get the "a script on this page may be busy" popup. Moreover, the entire browser (Firefox) locks up while it's waiting. I thought the whole point of AJAX was to load stuff unobtrusively. I've looked through the tutorials and documentation for EasyUI but it's not clear to me how to force a datagrid to load in the background. There are some similar unanswered questions asked on the EasyUI forums. Do I need to override the loader property of datagrid? If so, does anybody know where I can get a non-obfuscated version of the default loader function so I can be sure I understand what it's supposed to do before I write my own? Also, if I need asynchronous datagrids and datatrees with sorting and filtering features, is jQuery EasyUI the wrong library for doing this simply and cleanly? Is there some alternative jQuery library people would recommend? Thank you.

  I've just upgraded a project from VS2008 to VS2010 but I'm still targeting the 3.5 framework. In my project file I have a custom task to run SGEN to generate my XmlSerializers.dll. However the version of sgen being run targets the 4.0 framework. As a result, when I run my application I get the error message: "Could not load file or assembly 'XXXX.XXXX.XmlSerializers' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded." • ASP.NET MVC tries to load older version of Owin assembly

  As a bit of context, I'm developing an ASP.NET MVC 5 application that uses OAuth-based authentication via Microsoft's OWIN implementation, for Facebook and Google only at this stage. Currently (as of v3.0.0, git-commit 4932c2f), the FacebookAuthenticationOptions and GoogleOAuth2AuthenticationOptions don't provide any property to force Facebook nor Google respectively to reauthenticate users (via appending the appropriate query string parameters) when signing in. Initially, I set out to override the following classes: FacebookAuthenticationOptions GoogleOAuth2AuthenticationOptions FacebookAuthenticationHandler (specifically AuthenticateCoreAsync()) GoogleOAuth2AuthenticationHandler (specifically AuthenticateCoreAsync()) yet discovered that the ~AuthenticationHandler classes are marked as internal. So I pulled a copy of the source for the Katana project (http://katanaproject.codeplex.com/) and modified the source accordingly. After compiling, I found that there are several dependencies that needed updating in order to use these updated assemblies (Microsoft.Owin.Security.Facebook and Microsoft.Owin.Security.Google) in the MVC project: Microsoft.Owin Microsoft.Owin.Security Microsoft.Owin.Security.Cookies Microsoft.Owin.Security.OAuth Microsoft.Owin.Host.SystemWeb This was done by replacing the existing project references to the 3.0.0 versions and updating those in web.config. Good news: the project compiles successfully. In debugging, I received an exception on startup: An exception of type 'System.IO.FileLoadException' occurred in [MVC web assembly].dll but was not handled in user code Additional information: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Owin.Security, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) The underlying exception indicated that Microsoft.AspNet.Identity.Owin was trying to load v2.1.0 of Microsoft.Owin.Security when calling app.UseExternalSignInCookie() from Startup.ConfigureAuth(IAppBuilder app) in Startup.Auth.cs. Unfortunately that assembly (and its other dependency, Microsoft.AspNet.Identity.Owin) aren't part of the Project Katana solution, and I can't find any accessible repository for these assemblies online. Are the Microsoft.AspNet.Identity assemblies open source, like the Katana project? Is there a way to fool those assemblies to use the referenced v3.0.0 assemblies instead of v2.1.0? The /bin folder contains the 3.0.0 versions of the Owin assemblies. I've upgraded the NuGet packages for Microsoft.AspNet.Identity.Owin, and this is still an issue. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

• ASP.NET websites under IIS 7.5 (Windows 7) running extremely slow

  I've just installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate on my desktop PC. I installed IIS, Visual Studio 2008, registered ASP.NET, etc. I have this ASP.NET 3.5 website I'm working on running EXTREMELY slow on this new IIS. On STA and PROD servers (Windows 2003 Server) and on my old XP/IIS 5.1 everything runs smoothly. A page which usually takes 1-2 seconds to load is taking 8 seconds!!! I saw this post on IIS forum. It says something about Vista/7 not pooling connections (just to let you know, the website is running locally but it's connecting to a SQL Server 2005 hosted on a remote server). It seems that it takes a while to "start loading" the page... I mean, I click refresh and it stays for several seconds "Waiting for localhost"... Then when it gets response it loads the whole page normally... I don't have a clue how to force Win7/IIS7.5 to pool database connections. EDIT: I've created a new empty ASP.NET web application to see if the problems happens too. The answer is no, it responds fast as it should with an empty default page. Maybe is something related to the DB connection. I will do a further test. It should be a way to fix it... EDIT 2: Debugging the app I noticed that the delay occurs AFTER the execution of .NET code (Page_Load, etc)... so the delay seems to be somewhere when IIS serves the page to the browser.

• WPF: TreeViewItem bound to an ICommand

  Hi All, I am busy creating my first MVVM application in WPF. Basically the problem I am having is that I have a TreeView (System.Windows.Controls.TreeView) which I have placed on my WPF Window, I have decide that I will bind to a ReadOnlyCollection of CommandViewModel items, and these items consist of a DisplayString, Tag and a RelayCommand. Now in the XAML, I have my TreeView and I have successfully bound my ReadOnlyCollection to this. I can view this and everything looks fine in the UI. The issue now is that I need to bind the RelayCommand to the Command of the TreeViewItem, however from what I can see the TreeViewItem doesn't have a Command. Does this force me to do it in the IsSelected property or even in the Code behind TreeView_SelectedItemChanged method or is there a way to do this magically in WPF? • Is it OK to set "Cache-Control: public" when sending “304 Not Modified” for images stored in the dat

  After asking a question about sending “304 Not Modified” for images stored in the in the Google App Engine datastore, I now have a question about Cache-Control. My app now sends Last-Modified and Etag, but by default GAE alsto sends Cache-Control: no-cache. According to this page: The “no-cache” directive, according to the RFC, tells the browser that it should revalidate with the server before serving the page from the cache. [...] In practice, IE and Firefox have started treating the no-cache directive as if it instructs the browser not to even cache the page. As I DO want browsers to cache the image, I've added the following line to my code: self.response.headers['Cache-Control'] = "public" According to the same page as before: The “cache-control: public” directive [...] tells the browser and proxies [...] that the page may be cached. This is good for non-sensitive pages, as caching improves performance. The question is if this could be harmful to the application in some way? Would it be best to send Cache-Control: must-revalidate to "force" the browser to revalidate (I suppose that is the behavior that was originally the reason behind sending Cache-Control: no-cache) This directive insists that the browser must revalidate the page against the server before serving it from cache. Note that it implicitly lets the browser cache the page.

  After much struggling, I've figured out how to authenticate to my company's Active Directory using just 2 lines of code with the Domain, Username, and Password in .NET 2.0 (in C#): // set domain, username, password, and security parameters DirectoryEntry entry = new DirectoryEntry("LDAP://" + domain, username, password, AuthenticationTypes.Secure | AuthenticationTypes.SecureSocketsLayer); // force Bind to AD server to authenticate object obj = entry.NativeObject; If the 2nd line throws an exception, then the credentials and/or parameters were bad. (Specific reason can be found in the exception.) If no exception, then the credentials are good. Trying to do this in .NET 3.5 looks like it should be easy, but has me at a roadblock instead. Specifically, I've been working with this example: PrincipalContext domainContext = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain, domain); using (domainContext) { return domainContext.ValidateCredentials(UserName, Password); } Unfortunately, this doesn't work for me as I don't have both ContextOptions set to Sealed/Secure and SSL (like I did above in the .NET 2.0 code.) We tried the following to force the weblogic to load DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl from xerces i)we have added the following tag into weblogic.xml true ii)we have put latest versions of xalan in jre/lib/endorced folder. this didnt resolve our problem. ii) we have added entries in weblogic-application.xml webapp.encoding.default UTF-8 javax.jws. org.apache.xerces. org.apache.xerces.jaxp.* ii)Added the following entry in weblogic-application.xml <parser-factory> <saxparser-factory>org.apache.xerces.jaxp.SAXParserFactoryImpl</saxparser-factory> <document-builder-factory>org.apache.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl </document-builder-factory> org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl iii)Added jaxp.properties to load DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl from xerces to the jre/lib and started the server.In this case, the weblogic didnt start. iv)Then we started the server first and then copied the jaxp.properties file during the run time when server starts.But no success None of the above worked for us. I placed a breakpoint at the start of the onCreate() method but I discovered it didn't even reach there. Somehow, the application just couldn't be loaded in Android 2.2... but it works perfectly fine for all the previous Android versions. • UIImagePickerController in landscape on iPhone OS >= 3.2

  Here is the problem. I have to open the UIImagePickerController in landscape. At this phase I am doing the app for iPhone but it will be soon adjusted for iPad. The classical way to force the UIImagePickerController to open in landscape would be to use this solution. But this solution has a problem, specially for iPad, that is the line, [[UIDevice currentDevice] setOrientation:UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight]; because Apple rejects an application for doing that, as they don't want you to set an orientation, because if the user is holding the iPad on landscapeLeft the controller will appear upside down. Apple want you to use your paranormal powers and open the controller the right way for the user. The only problem is this: My controller is to appear when the application starts At this time, the orientation information is not yet available, because it takes a while for the device to discover its orientation; I've tried to get around this using the accelerometer to discover the orientation, but the accelerometer data is not yet available too when the app starts. I could make a routine to delay the application until the orientation is available, showing a black screen to the user in the mean time, or a beach ball, but I wonder if there's a more elegant way to do that! thanks.

• SGEN doesn't work after upgrading from VS2008 to VS2010

  I just recently upgraded a VS2008/.NET 3.5 SP1 project to VS2010 and .NET 4. I have a post-build event which calls SGEN to generate the XmlSerializers assembly. Whenever I try to run it I get the following error. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin\sgen.exe" /debug /force /verbose /c:"platform:x86" "C:\path\to\SomeAssembly.dll" Microsoft (R) Xml Serialization support utility [Microsoft (R) .NET Framework, Version 2.0.50727.3038] Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Error: An attempt was made to load an assembly with an incorrect format: c:\path\to\someassembly.dll. - Could not load file or assembly 'file:///c:\path\to\someassembly.dll' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded. If you would like more help, please type "sgen /?". I get the same error running SGEN from the command line, but I can't figure out what the problem is. Any ideas?

• MSBuild: building website using AspNetCompiler - adding references?

  Hi, I'm attempting to build a ASP.NET website using MSBuild - specifically the AspNetCompiler tag. I know that, for my project, I need to add some references. Within Visual Studio I have several references, one is a project reference and the others are some DLLS (AjaxControlToolkit etc). I'm happy not referencing the project and referencing the DLL instead - however I just can't work out how to add a reference. • Forcing UIInterfaceOrientation changes on iPhone

  I'm strugging with getting an iPhone application which requires just about every push or pop in the Nav Controller Stack to change orientation. Basically the first view is portrait, the second landscape the third portrait again (Yes I know this is less than ideal, but that's the design and I've got to implement it). Setting to link against 3.1.2 my reading of the linked articles above seems to indicate that if my portrait view pushes a view with - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { // Return YES for supported orientations return ((interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight) ); } Then then that view should appear rotated to landscape. What happens is it appears in its "broken" portrait form, then rotates correctly as the device is turned. If I pop the controller back to my portrait view (which has an appropriate shouldAutoRotate...) then that remains in broken landscape view until the device is returned to portrait orientation. I've also tried removing all the shouldautorotate messages, and instead forcing rotation by transforming the view. This kind of works, and I've figured out that by moving the status bar (which is actually hidden in my application) [UIApplication sharedApplication].statusBarOrientation = UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight; the keyboard will appear with the correct orientation when desired. The problem with this approach is that the status bar transform is weird and ugly when you don't have a status bar - a shadow looms over the page with each change. So. What am I missing. 1) Am I wrong in thinking that in 3.1.2 (or possibly earlier) shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation should provide the desired orientation simply by pushing controllers ? 2) Is there another way of getting keyboards to appear in the correct orientation. 3) Are the undocumented API calls the way to go (please no!)
