  I post this with much trepidation after my baptism by fire recently, and knowing that this question has been asked and answered already. My problem is that I cannot seem to remove start.funmoods as the default search engine when I type into the omnibox in Chrome - I have followed the instruction in the answer to the previous question on this topic. In particular: I deleted funmods using the control panel - add/remove programs Under wrench-tools-extensions funmods is not mentioned Under wrench-settings-manage search engines, there is nothing listed at all. Restarted chrome and rebooting have not helped.

• How to log Windows server share connections?

  Can anyone make a suggestion for the best way to log connections and disconnections from Windows workstations to a Windows Server 2003 file share? We're having some issues with workstations that have a drive mapped to a server that seem to work fine for awhile and then suddenly appear to get disconnected from the server (with files open). Needless to say this causes some data corruption and error messages. It would help me to troubleshoot the problem if we could somehow monitor and log the session connections and disconnections, to attempt to correlate the connectivity issues with what actions the user is taking at the time and what the server is doing. I just haven't been able to find a way to do this. Specifically I'm talking about the same information that is displayed in the Computer Management control panel applet in the "System Tools|Shared Folders|Sessions" page. Thanks!

• How to configure something like "Reflexive ACL" on OpenBSD?

  My U-Verse modem has something called "Reflexive ACL" described as Reflexive ACL: When IPv6 is enabled, you can enable Reflexive Access Control Lists to deny inbound IPv6 traffic unless this traffic results from returning outgoing packets (except as configured through firewall rules). This seems like a pretty good way to keep from having to maintain a firewall on each computer behind my router that gets handed an IPv6 address. It sounds about like a NAT, which for my small home network is all I want right now. Now my modem sucks as a router though, so I'm in the process of configuring an OpenBSD router to do that. I've got IPv6 supported and all that and my OpenBSD router will hand out IPv6 addresses by rtadvd. Now I want to keep people from having instant access to my local network through IPv6. How would I best do something like Reflexive ACL with pf in OpenBSD 5.0?

• Distributed website server redundancy

  Assume a website infrastructure is very complicated and is fully distributed (probably like most large web companies). Am I right in thinking that although there are all these extra web servers to handle multiple client requests, there is still a single "machine" whereby users must enter? I am guessing this machine will be the one physically associated to the IP address? I ask because I need to know whether, in places where distributed systems exist, there is still a single point of failure- usually the control node or, in this example, the machine connected to the public internet? Surely there cannot be two machines connected to the internet, as they would have to have different IP addresses? This "machine" may not be a server per se, but maybe it is a piece of cisco equipment. I just need to know whether, in the real world, these distributed systems still have a particular section where they depend on the integrity of one electronic device?

• How can I trace NTFS and Share Permissions to see why I can (or can't) write a file

  I'm trying to track down WHY I can write in a folder that, by my best estimation, I should not be able to write. The folder is shared with "Everyone" has "Full Control", with the files being more restrictive. My best guess is there's some sort of sub-group membership that's allowing me to write, but the nesting of groups that exists in our Active Directory is pretty extensive. Is there a tool, that will tell me which of the ACL entries allowed or disallowed my writing a file in a folder? The Effective Permissions dialog is marginally helpful, but what I need is something like a "NTFS ACL Trace Tool", if such a thing exists.

• Change default code page of Windows console to UTF-8

  Currently I'm running Windows 7 x64 and usually I want all console tools to work with UTF-8 rather than with default code page 850. Running chcp 65001 in the command prompt prior to use of any tools helps but is there any way to set is as default code page? Update: Changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage\OEMCP value to 65001 appear to make the system unable to boot in my case. Proposed change of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\Autorun to @chcp 65001>nul served just well for my purpose. (thanks to Ole_Brun)

• Client/Server game even in solo: any big problem?

  I'm making a game which have strong basic design based on multiplayer but also should provide a really interesting and self-sufficient solo game. A bit like a real-time strategy game. The events and actions taken shouldn't be as massive and immediate as in a FPS, so you can also think the networking like for an RTS. It's a PC game, targetting Windows, MacOSX and Linux (Ubuntu & Fedora). It's programmed in C++, using a variety of open source libraries, so I have great (potential) control over the performances. So far I always considered that just making the game work with two applications, client & server, even in solo mode was ok. However, as I'm in the process of starting the network code I'm having doubts about if it's a good idea. I'm not a specialist so I might be missing something in my analysis. I see these pros and cons: Pros: The game works only one way so if I fix a bug it should apply on all game modes, whatever the distance with the server is; Basic networking issues would be detected early, including behaviour with the protection softwares (firewall) installed (i am not specialist so this might be wrong); Cons: I suppose that even if it should be really fast enough, networking client and server on the same computer would still be slower than no networking and message passing in (one) process memory. Maybe debugging would be more difficult? I don't have experience in this case but so far I assume that debugging with Visual Studio allows me to debug multiple process so it shouldn't be really different. Also, remote debugging. My question is: is there a big disadvantage that I missed? Or maybe there are advantages that I missed and that should encourage me to just continue with only client-server game sessions?

  A user has lost the ability to attach files in mail. Drag and still drop works, but not toolbar Attach or Actions / Attach file. I have replaced Design template for mail . Backup and reinstalled Lotus. Using only the users notes.ini user.id & names.nsf. but still the function still does not work. Is there a registry key that may control this function or can it be a corrupt *.ini or *.id file?

  I'm trying to design a simple conversion framework based on these requirements: All developers should follow a predefined set of rules to convert from the source entity to the target entity Some overall policies should be able to be applied in a central place, without interference with developers' code Both the creation of converters and usage of converter classes should be easy To solve these problems in C# language, A thought came to my mind. I'm writing it here, though it doesn't compile at all. But let's assume that C# compiles this code: I'll create a generic interface called IConverter public interface IConverter<TSource, TTarget> where TSource : class, new() where TTarget : class, new() { TTarget Convert(TSource source); List<TTarget> Convert(List<TSource> sourceItems); } Developers would implement this interface to create converters. For example: public class PhoneToCommunicationChannelConverter : IConverter<Phone, CommunicationChannle> { public CommunicationChannel Convert(Phone phone) { // conversion logic } public List<CommunicationChannel> Convert(List<Phone> phones) { // conversion logic } } And to make the usage of this conversion class easier, imagine that we add static and this keywords to methods to turn them into Extension Methods, and use them this way: List<Phone> phones = GetPhones(); List<CommunicationChannel> channels = phones.Convert(); However, this doesn't even compile. With those requirements, I can think of some other designs, but they each lack an aspect. • Missing 16:10 resolutions with Nvidia drivers (Can't add resolutions)

  I have a laptop with a Nvidia 9650M GT and used the drivers that Seven brought me. It works fine but Metro 2033 tells me that I have to upgrade my drivers to play the game. So I did it. But since I did a clean install of the new Nvidia drivers, I just have 1440*900 or 4:3 resolutions. I usually played with 1280*800 or 1184*740 (for performance issue) With the "old" drivers I was able to create custom resolution (1184*740) in Nvidia control panel but now when I try it tells me that "my monitor cannot support this resolution". When I insist, it works but soon as I shut down my computer I have to recreate it.. Do anyone have a fix?

• Traffic shaping L2TP/IPsec VPN (via accounts not connection)

  I need to be able to control the amount of bandwidth a specific user account can use on a VPN connection. One account I want to be able to use the VPN with no restrictions and another account I want to limit to a reasonable amount of bandwidth (say 10GB or so a month). I'm aware that you can traffic shape individual connections but that does not quite solve the problem as the limited account can just disconnect and reconnect to get a new connection. I need to be able to limit bandwidth on a login basis for a given period of time (monthly limit). I'm really not that familiar with traffic shaping in general so any advice would be appreciated. • Can not join comp to the domain... greyed out

  I have an old WinXP Pro SP3 computer I need to join to the domain, simple right? not really. When I go to control panel - system - computer name and click on CHANGE ("rename this computer") everything is greyed out. I can not set it from workgroup to a domain. I am logged on locally as an admin. (Builtin account and one I created) I have checked local policy (gpedit.msc) on the comp, but it feels like a needle in the haystack. I could probably reload an image faster than trying to fix this...but I am curious so I post here to see if anyone knows of it/fix.   Following : Installing Team Foundation Server on a shared database instance We did use a shared database instance setup for TFS 2005, and that was not a good idea, because of the Reporting Service dependency. The reporting instance on the server gives error code 404. What works now Basic source code control. We're able to check in and out source code. What doesn't work : Everything else, including : Opening and creating new team projects. Build automation. Internal bug tracking. Goal setup Having a fully working TFS install, and keeping the history. 1) A full install of TFS 2005 on the same server, but within its own database and reporting instance. 2) Using another server might be an option, but it's really not prefered Downtime should be minimum, my colleagues needs to be able to work on the source Readings I've read the MSDN page about moving/restoring TFS 2005, but I'm still unsure about what to do. • HD Radeon 6950 cannot run multiple monitors

  I'm having troubles getting multiple monitors to run on my graphics card. I plug one via the hdmi, and one into the DVI (I have tried both available DVI ports). with one DVI port it does not even register the monitor, with the second one I go into the Catalyst Control Center and it gives me the option to swap between the HDMI and the DVI port. I guess since this is the flex edition I could just go get 2 DSP to HDMI converters, plug 2 monitors in through the available DSP, and than the 3rd one into the HDMI, but do you have any idea why it will not let me run one HDMI and one DVI?

  I have finished a simple 2D one-on-one indoor football Android game. The thing that it seemed so simple to me, a human being, turned out to be difficult for a computer: how to go around the opponent … At the moment the game logic of the computer player is that if it hits into the human player will step back few points on the pixel greed and then try again to go towards the ball. The problem is if the human player is in-between then the computer player will oscillate in one place, which does not look very nice and the human opponent can use this weakness to control the game. You can see this in the photo – at the moment the computer will go along the red line indefinitely. I tried few ideas but it proved not easy to do it when both the human player and the ball are constantly moving so at each step computer would change directions and “oscillate” again. Once when the computer player reaches the ball it will kick it with certain amount of random strength and direction towards the human’s goal. The question here is how to formulate the logic of going around the ever moving human opponent and how to translate it into the co-ordinate system and frame by frame animation… any suggestions welcome.

  printer 1 connected to the desktop printer 2 connected to the same desktop that desktop is connected via Cat 5 to a wireless router a notebook is connected to that same router via WiFi The desktop Control Panel has just been reconfigured to share printers. (I assume this means that the desktop will now allow a notebook coming through the router to be able to access the two printers that are presently hooked up via the desktop--am I correct? Is that what it means?) The desktop can still print to either printer. It is presently okay. This notebook/printer relationship is a new configuration. The notebook, however, can't print at all (yet it can access the internet just fine). Any suggestions for it to be able to access the printers and be able to print via the desktop via the router? • Windows 7 doesn't connect to mapped drives at start up.....

  We are testing Windows 7 (32bit version) and logon to a windows 2003 domain that runs a logon script whichs maps our drive letters. We have no control over the domain. Of our 7 test users, 5 continually recieve red X's on their network drives after they logon. Double clicking on them connects the drives, however, any aplpication that requires files on the fileserver will fail since it thinks it has no connection to the drive. We have tried several reg edits (Enable Linked connections, KeepConn), we have tried to find information in the event viewer to no avail. We have also looked at any differences in NIC driver versions (none). The other 2 computers that can connect without problem are local admins, but, if we logon to the 5 that have the problem with the local admin credentials we get the red x's as well??? This one is a real head scratcher......

• External monitor on old Dell 700m?

  Okay, linux noob. I installed 10.04 on an old Dell 700m in hopes of using it as a media center device. That seems to work great, except now it won't output to the external monitor. VGA cable works fine, TV recognizes other computers fine, it's the laptop that won't output. Turns out that the 700m, unlike every other computer out there, doesn't have a Fn hotkey to switch monitors. The only way to do it in Windows was to go through the Control Panel. In Ubuntu, though, the Monitor setup won't detect or recognize any monitors. The laptop display works fine, but I can't adjust or add anything. I did a little research and found suggestions for older Ubuntu builds involving the xorg.conf. I tried one out, in spite of my unfamiliarity, and it's screwed the whole display big time. I can fix that with a clean reinstall, that's no problem, but I'm cautious about editing xorg again. Any suggestions? Thank you!

• Setting up a domain with a dedicated server

  I have a dedicated server with a bunch of stuff on it already. Basically, I am accessing it now with the free domain I got when I purchased the server (http://example.com/directory, etc). I also have a second domain I want to use with a specific subdirectory (http://exampletwo.com/ should basically work as if I were under http://example.com/two, but it should use the exampletwo domain. I would assume I would change the A record of the second domain to the IP of the server, but how do I make it work with a subdirectory? I have full DNS control of the second domain but it is purchased on from a different registrar than the dedicated server. EDIT: It is a CentOS 5 server running Plesk/Virtuozoo.

  Setup: I have a samsung LCD TV that is connected via eth0 to a T41 Thinkpad running Ubuntu 10.10 which is wirelessly connected to the home router. I am trying to get Samsung's remote control app working on my iPad but the app won't allow me to put in an ip address and only discovers the tv if it's on the same subnet as the iPad (lame). So I need the laptop to route packets from eth0 to the wireless interface (wlan0), and I need about 3 ports on the wlan0 interface to be forwarded to the samsung tv. Hopefully all this makes sense. I've been messing around with iptables and samsung is now able to access internet via laptop wireless, but mapping from wlan0 back to the samsung tv is eluding me.

• XAMPP won't start Apache on Mac OS

  When I try starting Apache from the XAMPP control panel (Mac OSX Snow Leopard), I get the following error popup and Apache won't start: /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/apachectl: line 70: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Invalid argument (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 XAMPP was running perfectly 10 minutes earlier. I stopped Apache to add some .conf files and it failed on restart. I removed all the new .conf files (i.e. reverted it to how it was before) but now I get the above message. EDIT: I've checked AppMonitor and I see the "httpd" processes (one by _www nested within root). Just tried quitting these but they're auto-restarted on new process IDs and it didn't solve the problem.

• How to properly uninstall/reinstall Ubuntu One on Windows XP?

  I had previously installed an Ubuntu One client as a test on a Windows XP machine. Now I wanted to change the account for the client to a production one but had problems changing the email address so decided to do a reinstall. Ran uninstall. Downloaded ubuntuone-3.0.2-windows-installer.exe. It downloads, goes through the unpacking/install – strangely some of the messages say updating as if it was replacing something that was already there. I do not get the setup/signin screen. There is no ubuntu% processes running. The Program files/ubuntuone directory exists with data and dist folders. The U icon is on the desktop – pointing at ubuntuone/dist/ubuntuone-control-panel-qt.exe but this does not run. Ran uninstall again, deleted Program files/ubuntuone directory, removed any ubuntu entries for registry, rebooted. Downloaded install again - exactly the same as above. How can I uninstall Ubuntu One to get a clean reinstall? Or force the install to continue after downloading/unpacking?

  Does anyone know if it's possible to control the font size on videos played in the built-in iPhone video player? The subtitles (or "Closed Captions") that are there by default are rather small.
