    Well, day 2 of the MIX10 conference did not disappoint.  The keynote speakers introduced the preview release of IE9, which looks really cool and quick, and Visual Studio 2010 RC that is scheduled to RTM on April 12th.  It seemed to have a lot of improvements aimed at making developers more productive.  Here are the current links to these two offerings: Internet Explorer 9 – Platform Preview Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 – Release Candidate While both of these were interesting, the demos that really blew me away today centered around the work being done with The Open Data Protocol, or OData for short!  OData is a recommended standard being pushed by Microsoft that uses a REST based interface to interact with various types of data in a uniform manner.  Data producers then provide the data to consumer in either ATOM or JSON formats as requested by the client application.   • Master-Details with RadGridView for Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services RC2 and Entity Framework 4.0

    I have prepared a sample project with the Silverlight 4 version of RadGridView released yesterday. The sample project was created with Visual Studio 2010, WCF RIA Services RC 2 for Visual Studio 2010, and ADO.NET Entity Framework (.NET 4). I have decided to use the SalesOrderHeader and SalesOrderDetails tables from the Adventure Works Database, because they provide the perfect one-to-many relationship: I will not go over the steps for creating the ADO.NET Entity Data Model and the Domain Service Class. In case you are not familiar with them, you should start with Brad Abrams series of blog posts and read this blog after that. To enable the master-details relationship we need to modify two things. First of all we need to include the automatic retrieval of the child entities in the domain service class.     I want to use MSCOMM control in my MS Excel 2010 VBA. The control shall appear in Tools-> Additional Controls dialog box in VBE of MS Excel 2010. I am trying to register MSCOMM32.OCX on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine. However, as I try to register it using regsvr32 as shown in the command window below, I am getting shown error popup. What am I missing here? Why is this component not getting registered? Or this is not the correct way to include MSCOMM control in MS Excel VBA?   • Venezuela's Highly Inflationary Economy Means Changes to Financial Statements

    This is a bit of an esoteric topic, but given the number of U.S. Companies (particularly oil companies) that operate and have subsidiaries in Venezuela, I think it is worthy of an honorable mention. As you may or may not know, Venezuela's currency has had some changes over the years. In 2008, the Venezuelan Bolivar became the Bolivar Fuerte which dropped three zeros. So Bs.10,000 became Bs.F.10 and all their bills and coins were changed to reflect this. Then on Jan. 8, 2010, the government devalued the currency by 100%. The conversion from VEF to USD dropped from 2.15 to 4.30. (I always wanted to visit Venezuela; I guess it's time to book my vacation). The SEC recently labeled Venezuela a highly inflationary economy. This means that US companies with investments/subsidiaries in Venezuela will need to apply highly inflationary accounting rules starting on Jan. 1, 2010. In addition, companies need to make more detailed disclosures when the Venezuelan reported balances differ from the actual US dollar denominated balances. In a nut shell, if you formerly used translation, then starting Jan 1 of this year, you must now use remeasurement (or temporal method) to restate your Venezuelan entity's financial statements. See ASC topic 830, Foreign Currency Matters, which states that "[t]he financial statements of a foreign entity in a highly inflationary economy shall be remeasured as if the functional currency were the reporting currency." For you non-accountants that I haven't bored and are still reading at this point, the reason why the SEC is doing this is to ensure financial statements are presented as accurately as possible. Hyperinflationary economies have volatile currencies, such as Venezuela (it's not every day a currency devalues 100% overnight) which can distort financial statements if the local currency (Venezuelan Bolivar Fuerte) is used as the functional currency. To make financial statements more accurate, the reporting currency of the U.S. parent (US dollars) should be used as the functional currency. FASB.orgactually has a nice write-up on this.

  • VSDB to SSDT part 4 : Redistributable database deployment package with SqlPackage.exe

    The goal here is to use SSDT SqlPackage to deploy the output of a Visual Studio 2012 Database project… a bit in the same fashion that was detailed here : http://geekswithblogs.net/80n/archive/2012/09/12/vsdb-to-ssdt-part-3--command-line-deployment-with-sqlpackage.exe.aspx   The difference is we want to do it on an environment where Visual Studio 2012 and SSDT are not installed. This might be the case of your Production server.   Package structure So, to get started you need to create a folder named “DeploymentSSDTRedistributable”. This folder will have the following structure :         The dacpac and dll files are the outputs of your Visual Studio 2012 Database project. If your database project references another database project, you need to put their dacpac and dll here too, otherwise deployment will not work. The publish.xml file is the publish configuration suitable for your target environment. It holds connexion strings, SQLVARS parameters and deployment options. Review it carefully. The SqlDacRuntime folder (an arbitrary chosen name) will hold the SqlPackage executable and supporting libraries   Contents of the SqlDacRuntime folder Here is what you need to put in the SqlDacRuntime folder  :      You will be able to find these files in the following locations, on a machine with Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate installed : C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin : SqlPackage.exe Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql.dll  Microsoft.Data.Tools.Utilities.dll Microsoft.SqlServer.Dac.dll C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Microsoft.SqlServer.TransactSql.ScriptDom\v4.0_11.0.0.0__89845dcd8080cc91 Microsoft.SqlServer.TransactSql.ScriptDom.dll   Deploying   Now take your DeploymentSSDTRedistributable deployment package to your remote machine. The DeployReport task of SqlPackage.exe will help you do that. The following command will output an xml of the changes:   "SqlDacRuntime/SqlPackage.exe" /Action:DeployReport /SourceFile:./Our.Database.dacpac /Profile:./Release.publish.xml /OutputPath:./ChangesToDeploy.xml      You might get some warnings on Log and Data file like I did. You can ignore them. Also, the tool is warning about data loss when removing a column from a table. By default, the publish.xml options will prevent you from deploying when data loss is occuring (see the BlockOnPossibleDataLoss inside the publish.xml file). Before actual deployment, take time to carefully review the changes to be applied in the ChangesToDeploy.xml file.    When you are satisfied, you can deploy your changes with the following command : "SqlDacRuntime/SqlPackage.exe" /Action:Publish /SourceFile:./Our.Database.dacpac /Profile:./Release.publish.xml   Et voilà !  Your dacpac file has been deployed to your database.     Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/StuartBrierley/archive/2013/10/16/biztalk---removing-bam-activities-and-views-using-bm.exe.aspxOn the project I am currently working on, we are making quite extensive use of BAM within our growing number of BizTalk applications, all of which are being deployed and undeployed using the excellent Deployment Framework for BizTalk 5.0.Recently I had an issue where problems on the build server had left the target development servers in a state where the BAM activities and views for a particular application were not being removed by the undeploy process and unfortunately the definition in the solution had changed meaning that I could not easily recreate the file from source control.  To get around this I used the bm.exe application from the command line to manually remove the problem BAM artifacts - bm.exe can be found at the following path:C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010\TrackingC:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010\TrackingStep1 :Get the BAM Definition FileRun the following command to get the BAm definition file, containing the details of all the activities, views and alerts:bm.exe get-defxml -FileName:{Path and File Name Here}.xmlStep 2: Remove the BAM ArtifactsAt this stage I chose to manually remove each of my problem BAM activities and views using seperate command line calls.  By looking in the definition file I could see the names of the activities and views that I wanted to remove and then use the following commands to remove first the views and then the activities:bm.exe remove-view -name:{viewname}bm.exe remove-activity -name:{activityname}

    Day 2 of DevDays 2010 and again 5 interesting sessions at the World Forum in The Hague. The first session of the today in the big world forum theater was from Scott Hanselman, he gives a lap around .NET 4.0. In his way of presenting he talked about all kind of new features of .NET 4.0 like MEF, threading, parallel processing, changes and additions to the CLR and DLR, WPF and all new language features of .NET 4.0. After a small break it was ready for session 2 from Scott Allen about Tips, Tricks and Optimizations of LINQ. He talked about lazy and deferred executions, the difference between IQueryable and IEnumerable and the two flavors of LINQ syntax. The lunch was again very good prepared and delicious, but after that it was time for session 3 Web Vulnerabilities and Exploits from Alex Thissen. This was no normal session but more like a workshop, we decided what kind of subjects we discussed, the subjects where OWASP, XSS and other injections, validation, encoding. He gave some handy tips and tricks how to prevent such attacks. Session 4 was about the new features of C# 4.0 from Alex van Beek. He talked about Optional- en Named Parameters, Generic Co- en Contra Variance, Dynamic keyword and COM Interop features. He showed how to use them but also when not to use them. The last session of today and also the last session of DevDays 2010 was about WCF Best Practices from Gerben van Loon. He talked about 7 best practices that you must know when you are going to use WCF. With some quick demos he showed the problem and the solution for some common issues. It where two interesting days and next year i sure will be attending again.

The FCC recently announced their National Broadband Plan, which is an initiative to improve the Internet infrastructure in the United States and provide higher speeds to everyone. You’ve also undoubtedly heard the news about Google getting into the mix with their program to bring ultra high-speed fiber broadband to 50,000 users in select cities. While we wait for those programs to come into fruition, we thought it would be cool to check out what kinds of speeds you’re getting now. Test Your Internet Connection Speed There are several sites out there you can use to test your Internet speeds, but probably the best site is Speedtest.net. It’s easy to use, and allows you test download and upload speeds to and from various locations in the US and throughout the world.     I have a "generic" USB IR receiver I purchased off of Ebay to make my life a little easier with XBMC on my Ubuntu box. I am currently running 13.10 and have never tried nor have any knowledge of IR in Ubuntu. I know of lirc, and I know a lot of it is now included in the kernel. My understanding is that lirc in basic terms maps pulses from an remote control to functions - like keyboard or mouse clicks.     Hello, I am migrating some applications from Apache 1.3 to 2.2. We used to run some tests where attacker opens some HTTP connection to our server, and do nothing. Apache 1.3 would log the following 408 code, for example: 126.1.86.85 - - [01/Dec/2010:06:26:19 +0000] "-" 408 - "-" 0 126.1.86.85 - - [01/Dec/2010:06:26:19 +0000] "-" 408 - "-" 0 But with Apache 2.2, nothing is logged to the log file. I run the same test by using netcat to open the connection: $ nc IP_victim PORT_victim $ nc 10.42.37.3 80 I would like to have Apache 2.2 log the same 408 code to the log file, so that we would know of attempted DoS attack from the outside. Do I need any more configuration in Apache 2 to enable this? I have tried some different configurations such as LogLevel = Debug, Timeout 30, RequestReadTimeout header=10 body=30. Thanks.
